ORVILLE WRIGHT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OVERVIEW The front classroom wing, the administration building, and a portion of the second classroom wing were all constructed in 1948. The remaining five classrooms in the wing were added at a later date. One additional standalone classroom building was added in 1954, while the remaining existing buildings on campus today are portable classrooms. The portable classrooms, which line the east and west boundaries of the site were added over a number of years beginning in the late 1980’s. The site is bordered to the north by Monterey Avenue, to the east by the Family Learning Center and community center on Empire Avenue, to the south by a city park, and on the west by Thrasher Avenue, which is an unpaved alley. The bus zone at Orville Wright occurs along the curb in front of the school, and there is no designated student drop off area, since many of the students live in the surrounding neighborhood and walk to school. The fenced staff parking lot is located between the Family Learning Center and the multi-purpose building, while the Learning Center has its own small parking lot. The biggest concerns at this campus is a single, secure front entry. The administration offices are located deep within the central building and staff cannot see who enters the front door, which gives direct access onto all parts of campus. Many students also enter through the secondary entrance at the multi-purpose building, located further from the offices, for breakfast before school begins. The multi-purpose space does have a stage, although the space is too small for the current student population as it was designed for the smaller student enrollment from the 1940’s. The campus serves three lunch periods with additional kindergarten lunches. Overall, the campus is well taken care of and the student gardens between the classroom wings are thriving.

CONDITION ASSESSMENT

64

The main office is centrally located within a hallway and between the two classroom wings, yet the staff has no visual connection to public visitors on campus.

The multi-purpose space at Orville Wright is housed in a permanent building and contains a stage and staff offices, yet it is undersized for the current student enrollment.

The campus is well tended, as shown here in the student gardens located between the original classroom wings.

The staff parking lot is undersized, but the staff appreciate the fact that it is safe because it is located between two buildings - the multi-purpose building and the Family Learning Center.

Many portable classrooms line both the east and west boundaries of the site, far from the central campus’ amenities.

MULTI-PURPOSE BUILDING & SITE IMPROVEMENTS

Phase 1 begins with a new double loaded classroom building. The increased classroom capacity allows for the removal of the portable classrooms on the western edge of the site. New block security walls will be erected along Thrasher Alley on the west, and between the residential neighbors and campus to the east.

A new secured staff parking lot with driveway access along Monterey Avenue takes the place of the western portable classrooms. A small parking lot is added in front of the kindergarten classrooms, with designated parking for CDP and kindergarten parents as well as campus visitors. Buses will continue to pick up and drop off along the curb in front of the school. A new multi-purpose building caps the original classroom wings and opens to an outdoor covered eating area.

MODERNIZATION The final phase calls for the modernization and reconfiguration of the existing buildings. The existing computer lab, library, and resource room will be reconfigured to house an expanded administration area. The remaining six portables can be used as interim housing as needed during the modernization, and removed when necessary.

PROPOSED SITE PLAN MONTEREY AVENUE

EMPIRE AVENUE

THRASHER ALLEY

OVERVIEW The master plan at Orville Wright adds two new buildings to the campus, one housing the multi-purpose space and one housing classrooms. The entrance to the new classroom wing aligns with the existing building’s entrance and exit, while the classrooms open along the interior corridor running east and west. The administration offices move to the front of the school and the existing multi-purpose space is reconfigured to house a library, computer lab, and a small music classroom on the stage. The multi-purpose placement is ideal for students arriving for breakfast and acts as an anchor at the end of the classroom wing quad. The multi-purpose opens to the outdoor amphitheater, which is centered on the quad. An outdoor covered dining area is located between the multi-purpose, new classroom building and the hardcourts. A secured staff and campus volunteer parking lot with driveway access off Monterey Avenue is located on the western edge of the site. Visitors, CDP and kindergarten parents can use the small designated lot on the northwest corner of the site. An expanded CDP/kindergarten playground is located directly south of the kindergarten classrooms. Additional site improvements include a soccer field, running track, and two playgrounds - one for the lower grades and one for the upper grades. Shade structures and covered eating areas are shown as dashed in the quad and over playgrounds. Areas for future growth are shown dashed in blue.
