Change is everchanging, be it fashion, technology or lifestyle etc. There are three key steps involving change, Acknowledging the change, Actioning the change, mastering it. ow that South African Fashion Week is over, we finally have time to reflect on the whirlwind of fashion that presented itself to us over that very awe inspiring seven days. SAFW Spring/Summer 2014 promotes South Africa’s fashion talent from big name designers to up and coming emerging design talent. With official launch parties, off schedule events scattered across the city and after parties, SAFW brings a true fashion experience to all fashionistas. From the stunning prints presented by Yadah, mesmerizing head gear by Clive Rundle to the romantic punchy silhouettes by Casey Jeanne, the clothes that came down the runway this season prove that there’s a lot of capital – S Style in store for us next season. Fast scooping the title of South Africa’s leading emerging designer Casey Jeanne’s SS 2014 collection is based on the ‘golden era’ included luxury tailoring and evening wear. The elements that Casey integrates into her daily life have become the inspiration behind her collection – utter romanticism, the glistening dew of a fresh summer’s morning, and the beauty of soft and delicate fabrics. One of the best components of the collection designed by Clive Rundle was the meticulously distinctive head wear on the ramp show.

These enhanced the overall collection greatly in our opinion. It is most mesmerizing to see design talent that is mysterious but at the same time refreshingly unique. Clive Rundle’s inherent structuring of patterns can lead the translation in any direction – avantgarde , classical and contemporary. His label Clive by Clive Rundle is available in 7 stores nationally. Gert Johan Coetzee is a popular name in the fashion industry, his collection was hugely received on ramp. He drew his inspiration from two sources , the colour palette of soft winter fruits and the other inspiration from the more prominent issue of Breast cancer awareness and the associated Pink Ribbon. Larisa Terablanche , Durban designer has been consistent in the collections that she showcases, we have been actively following Durban designers and their showcases and Larisa Terablanche among a few others certainly stand out. From carefully thought out mood boards to her attention to detail. Inspired by Cherry Blossom trees , Larisa drew key inspiration from a poem titled Cherry Blossom Adrift – verses such as “ Pink petals passing, scents above so high, painted porcelain perfection, blossoms caress the sky “ The collection speaks soft chiffon layers reflecting the petals of a Cherry Blossom.

THE CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS

The city , the people , the lifestyle is so fast forward that almost everybody is headfast in their industries and at the forefront of fashion, glamour and innovation. New York City embodies style. It is here that fashion ideas take form and trends are defined. When we speak Fashion Week we instinctively are taken to New York, the top ranking designers like Marc Jacob, Michael Kors and Carolina Hererra. Fashion week in New York is the event that broadcasts cutting edge fashion to the rest of the world. It’s the place where ideas are showcased, Originality is celebrated and norms are challenged. Starting from the moment the first model steps on the runway until the last photo is snapped, New York fashion captures the attention of the fashion world.

Carolina Herrera

ometimes life seems hard there, the crowds, keeping up with the trend expenses, the 24 hour living and working lifestyle. Remember this city never sleeps and drinking coffee four times a day, every day, isn’t the exception, it’s the rule. The feeling of being surrounded by 8,337 million New Yorkers and being part of the crowd in Times Square on New Year’s Eve. The adrenaline rush of trying to catch a train on the subway and actually succeeding just before the door closes. This is the typical life of a New Yorker, yes sure they walk the streets with Kate Moss and Tina Fey and jog alongside the many fitness enthusiast celebrities in Central Park. It is the city that is always one step ahead of the game, going non-stop in its quest to dominate at world stage. The allure that “ if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere”, One has to remember that there are also many possibilities in this power metropolis where you can touch opportunity in the air as it floats and sparkles beneath the gaze of the Statue of Liberty.

David Tlale

New York City has indeed, earned its mark of respect through its disciplined, creative approach to its fashion industry. ‘The Big Apple’ has reclaimed the title of the Top Global Fashion Capital in the world. Paris, which also won the title of the Top Global Fashion Capital for Haute Couture, finished in the No. 2 spot overall. New York and Paris were separated by 0.05%, the closest in the 10-year history of the Global Language Monitor’s survey. ‘New York City has more than of 5,000 fashion industry show rooms, more than any other city in the world.’ 13

Pearl Naidoo went to the United States eleven years ago as a fresh young girl out of school with big dreams. She has now worked her way up to a highly-respected and successful fashion designer with an exquisite jewelry line, who gets to work alongside great artists that she used to idolize when she was a young girl. Pearl’s career has come full-circle, she is now an international businesswoman making her mark both here in South Africa and the United States. Growing up in South Africa, she never understood why she always felt that something was missing, she began to dream of her favorite things; Fashion and accessories. Pearl shares her story with us . . . Pearl Naidoo always took an interest in fashion, especially beautiful pieces of jewelry. What was missing was her creative freedom. She needed more liberty to truly express the beauty that she felt inside. At the tender age of 18, Pearl wanted to leave South Africa, she applied for entry into the USA and became an Au Pair. Fully aware of what challenges she would face, Pearl laid out a mental map of what she needed to accomplish. Determined to fulfill her dreams, she pushed forward in the Fashion Industry. Whilst working for one of the families, Pearl met celebrity Designer and Stylist Kythe Brewster. Mr. Brewster noticed Pearl’s talent, and knew that she could excel in the fashion industry. He later offered Pearl her first official job. While working as Mr. Brewster’s assistant she learnt the” ins and out’s” of fashion from the designers point of view. Her first project was with celebrity Tony Cohen, and she went on to work with other entertainers and high fashion models; including “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” Cynthia Bailey, Lucy Lui and Beyonce. After being overwhelmed by the brutal world and fast life of fashion at such a young age, Pearl decided to take a few brief pauses. However, each time she left fashion, she always felt compelled to return to it. “ I didn’t choose fashion, fashion chose me “. Great sacrifices and tough choices had to be made and she went on to live the typical life of a beginner in New York, waitressing at Blue Dog Café. In between shifts she would construct beautiful basic pieces of jewelry for her fellow waitresses as gifts. They would happily wear these during their shifts and that is how the brand Pearl Naidoo was born. Patrons would admire these and ask the waitresses where it was purchased. Pearls jewelry became fast in demand, she saw the opportunity to make extra money and was creating unique pieces and selling at the café. Since the official launch of the Pearl Naidoo Jewelry Collection, her designs have been featured in publications such as Fuzion Magazine, the Latino Show magazine, Vogue Italia, Fashion Avenue Magazine and I-Fashion Magazine. In February of 2013, during New York Couture Fashion Week, her DENKAY clothing line was launched, expanding and elevating the Pearl Naidoo brand to new heights. Inspired by her Indian roots and South African upbringing. The Pearl Naidoo Story has become a powerful enriched brand. The journey Pearl is on now, getting back to her native land of South Africa and developing her jewelry brand here. The majority of her business efforts are paired with a charitable causes, including She’s the First, Seeds of Peace, Step it up Africa, Glamour Girls in the City and Synch Now. 16

Interview with Pearl Naidoo. Date : 28th February 2014 Venue : Hashtag Durban We had the pleasure of meeting with Pearl Naidoo on her recent trip to South Africa, She returned after 11 years with now the desire to bring her brand along with its accomplishments here to South Africa. She has a pop up store at 75 Stamford Hill displaying most of her beautiful collections including her ready to wear clothing line. Let’s go to the beginning. How did you develop your brand as a whole? The thing with fashion is that you don’t get the big money until you “make it,” It’s all about the business, your vision and future plans. So I’m not just a designer, I’m also a businesswoman. Everything I do is for my brand. I have developed and grew this from the inception. Even if funds are low, you have to be head strong, there have been times where I had no money to pay the rent because I had to finish a project. And you do it, thinking that the project will bring in enough money for you to catch up with the bills you’re not paying. If the project flops, then you have to moonlight at a coffee shop for a while. That was me. How did the jewelry business take off to the next level? Renowned publicist Ashley Priest introduced my work to the fashion industry. Ashley was a fan of my work and helped me with public relations, which gave me a big boost. So, I started doing sponsorships, contributing to gift bags at fashion events and eventually by word of mouth Pearl Naidoo travelled. People knew me and they knew my work.

D NOT

SE ME”

PEARL NAIDOO

What made you choose Jewelry as the biggest component of your brand? It’s this simple, I can put 1000 pieces of jewelry on, but only 1 outfit. Jewelry is what I am known for, I like the feel of limitless style and interchanging looks that it can create. I launched Denkay clothing line to produce a sister brand. I’m selfish sometimes, when I am working on a project I like to put the entire look together from jewelry, clothes and shoes but I’m also very giving if I am growing I see that my friends and family is growing with me. What strong advise can you give our readers who aspire to you and your story? I just believe that you have to be persistent in everything that you do. Use age as your advantage and work the hardest you can, Even if it means going nights without sleep because you are working and planning big plans. You have to take risks. Some investments may fail, but one will hit big. Being talented isn’t enough. Someone with 20% talent and 80% business sense will be more successful than someone with 90% talent and no business sense.

Vodacom Durban July 2014

MOVIE STAR GLAM ‘‘The Big Screen”

Bar Refaeli

www.lipstickred.co.za

D

urban - The bright lights of showbiz are beckoning at this year’s Vodacom Durban July. Following the announcement of the 2014 fashion theme “The Big Screen” some of the country’s most iconic designers are gathering movie-themed fashion inspiration from all over the globe, and are predicting to fashionistas and racegoers that July 5 will be a day filled with movie magic and sophisticated glamour with Bollywood, Hollywood and Nollywood as the underlying themes. Popular Durban designer Kathrin Kidger envisions “The Big Screen” theme to be very much about an innate sense of glamour. “The three things that continuously shine through are Hollywood, Bollywood and Nollywood. This year we can expect to see garments that are inspired by film stars of the past and present,” said Kidger. “Bollywood is also trending right now and I expect to see a lot of woman in traditional dress”, she added. Durban designer Bianca Warren also forecasts the Hollywood trend running through the threads, “It’s about old school Hollywood glam. Style, sophistication and timeless elegant red carpet wear”, said Warren. Classic colours are key for the young designer and Warren suggests choosing formal long evening gowns in dark maroons champagnes, greys, navy and blacks. “Opulence, lux and lavish” sums up what established designer Casey Jeanne imagines when she thinks of “The Big Screen”. “Think exceptionally sophisticated with a focus on superior detailing and finishes”. Casey recommends racegoers invest in longer hems, dramatic silhouettes, intricate details, superior fabrics and of course, Hollywood glamour. But be wary not to take the theme too far, says Tiffany Prior, Fashion Programme Director of the Vodacom Durban July. The style guru warns not to come dressed as a movie character but to rather subtly interpret the theme. “Research and interpret what you love about a certain character, movie, or era of movies. It should then be very easy to dress appropriately for race day”, said Prior. “But the overall impression for raceday must remain posh and elegant”, Prior added.

“Opulence, lux and lavish” Casey Jeanne

The Big Screen is a fashion theme with endless options and luckily for designers and racegoers is wide open to the imagination. Dashing Durban designer Andre Martin says that, “Everyone of us has our favourite movies and we have probably all been inspired by an iconic character. You should think about being comfortable whilst still bringing out the movie star in you.” Whatever fashions come out to play at the greatest horseracing event in Africa fashionistas and racegoers can be assured it’ll be worthy of the big screen. Who can forget Jennifer Lopez at the 2000 Emmy Awards in the Versace palm-print sheer-silk chiffon green gown that clung to her curves. That was the most talked about garment and started a whole new trend. The brand is now headed by Donatella Versace into a more architectural look that is very futuristic and modern looking, “My inspiration is still rock and roll, but now its lady rock and roll. The look is more refined, and more glamorous.” says Versace. The stars Madonna, Demi Moore, Jessica Alba love Versace for its sexy, glamorous, over the top inspired clothing. A clear indication that this brand wears well across different age groups. Sita Hiralal understands the direction that this brand is taking internationally, so she was pleased to announce that her store ‘The Style Network ‘will provide a new home locally for the collection. The brand was showcased elaborately at an exclusive launch high tea at The Oyster Box. Sita stressed the attention to detail of the Versace collection. The brand is renowned for sophistication, high luxury and above all style. Handbags, shoes and clothing were on display for guests to view. Newly crowned Miss KZN Renalda Hoffman modeled the brands finest displays.

tyle starts with self-knowledge. You need to

understand who you are or who you want to be in order to develop a style you can feel confident wearing. Spend some time taking a look at yourself, your lifestyle, and your aspirations. What makes you unique? What aspects of yourself do you want to share with the world? Is it your romanticism, your quick wit, your rebellious streak? Once you know how you want to present yourself to the world, it is easy to create a wardrobe that reflects that image. Being stylish allows you to create a unique look and you can inject elements of the fashion trends into you your image. There are some universal elements to style that all women should follow. •

Select outfits that are appropriate for your age and the occasion.

Always go for a great fit. Make sure any clothes you wear are flattering to your shape. It is an inexpensive way of looking and feeling like a million dollars.

Know your colors. Some colors will make you glow while others will make you appear unhealthy and tired.

It is important to understand the area that forms a V shape from the tips of your shoul ders down the point between your bust. This is the area that always draws people’s attention first. Make sure the colors you use in this area complement your skin tone. This doesn’t mean that you are banned from wearing other colors. If you love a particular shade of green, for instance, but you know it is not your color, you can still wear it; just ensure it is not within the V Shape zone.

Finish your look with flattering makeup.

Who wants to style like an A-Lister? •

Choose accessories to complement your look. It doesn’t require much effort and time. Accessories are a great way to create an individual style and are also an inexpensive way to update your wardrobe season after season.

Finally, wear your style with confidence and poise. You sell your look, not the clothes. Cre ating your own style is incredibly liberating. True style evolves naturally.

Ultimately, style is a celebration of individuality and celebrates the fact that we are all different and unique. A woman who knows who she is and has the confidence to express it, can create a style that is fun-loving, optimistic, classy, quirky, athletic…the possibilities are endless

The New GLA “Always restless”.

BEAUTIFUL CARS We attended the event at the Mercedes Benz Umhlanga Lifestyle Centre which featured some South Africa’s top designers, such as David Tlale, who recently had his solo debut at the New York Fashion Week and Leigh Schubert, popular for her timeless but fresh and uncomplicated signature ladies wear, took to the runway in elegance and style. Their collection was appreciated by the crowd who were moved by the style, color and texturing of these creations.

“In A Class Of it’s Own”

A highlight of the event was the launch of the New Mercedes Benz GLA, a strikingly dynamic car which unites the style elements of a SUV with the sportiness of a coupé. With the GLA‘s optimum combination of practicality with off-road ability, makes it the perfect vehicle for today’s downsized, cleaned-and-greened family. Selvin Govender, Divisional Manager, said that the new Mercedes Benz GLA with its everyday practicality will fill customers with enthusiasm for the brand, and that this year’s talent was evidence that SA’s fashion industry is ever growing. Mercedes-Benz has always been renowned for being a brand of luxury and style, and this spectacular event hosted by local celebrity – Tumisho Masha, was executed with panache, befitting the world of Haute Couture 30

ight from the start, Shiloh King has understood the power of a makeover. From her modeling days to now facilitating a makeup training studio and a recognized brand in the industry. Seen here in true Hollywood panache, she has come a long way and takes our cover story.

Tell us about your brand? I’ve been working in the makeup industry for 17 years. I can proudly say that our service standards have excelled by far in terms of services offered , products and general brand expansion. To date I have had the privilege of national and international experience and brand exposure until I found my true calling implementing the need to teach my specialized gift to potential artists and the fashion conscious. Where do you get your inspiration for creating a particular desired look from? There are many factors to look at when deciding on a Bridal look i.e. personality of the client, theme of the event, the outfit she’s wearing for that particular function and most importantly, whether her unique features will suit the look she’s going for. What do you love most about makeup? The fact that it can transform a ‘plain jane’ into a glam fairy and make every women achieve her personal best. Metallics or Pastels. . . And why? Definitely metallic. If the target market is brides, a Bride has much to compete with, with all the ornate jewelry, and bridal wear. Pastels are fresh, young and very summery more in keeping with an afternoon garden themed do. www.lipstickred.co.za

“My fan brush, it’s my magic wand” What do you suggest is the bare essentials needed in a makeup bag to put together a strong work look and still add a bit of drama for an evening event? WOW blusher and eye shadow combo palettes (in cool and warm palettes) allows you to achieve nude day and glam evening looks. Add my fabulous Diamond Glo Shimmer to cheeks, a lavish dollop of WOW clear gloss (mixed with my shimmer) and VOILA - two looks with ease of application. Colours come on fast and stay on all day. Tried and trusted. What techniques do you specialize in? The practical aspect of training covers basic makeup application (evening out and correcting skin tone) contouring (corrective makeup through illusion) Various bridal eye looks (most popular/traditional/classic/ themed/nude) Tell us more about your training school. My training school was launched 10 years ago and targets potential artists, stylists and the fashion conscious individuals which include teenagers, housewives, brides and clients who want to maintain their special day look. We are the only school that offers ongoing experience even after students have successfully completed their assessments. Students / artists also have the option of working under my brand until they are confident enough to work in their own industry. If we had to pick an area to focus on it would be our eyes. . . What are your tips on perfecting our eye makeup? It’s all in the tools, products, technique, lighting, positioning of your face and practice makes perfect. I suggest the EYES-ONLY WORKSHOP that my training center offers. An intense one on one session teaching you all the tricks to fabulous eyes. How can we create this ‘ glowing skin ‘ look? There are 2 ways to achieve this look, The dewy luminous liquid foundation mixed with a little bronzer (gets oily and doesn’t last long, not practical for a bridal look or any look that needs staying power) Alternatively brushing on my famous Diamond Glo shimmer on cheekbones, forehead, chin, spray with fixing spray and the glow intensifies as the makeup sets in. A definite winner! 34

ALPHABETS BB Cream

VS CC Cream

When trying to decide between these two creams, start with deciding what type of coverage you require

www.lipstickred.co.za

” 43

BB CC

I

n the wake of this BB cream craze that stocked the shelves of almost all retail stores globally, we take a behind the scene look at how this Beauty Alphabetical craze originated and moved from BB to the newest CC hit.

Where did BB Cream originate: BB Cream was created more than half a century ago by German Doctor, Dr. Christine Schrammek. It was initially created to be used to help heal skin after skin peels as well as hide any scars and redness post peel treatment. It was later introduced in Asia with several big-name stars endorsing it in South Korea, consumers globally went wild for it What does it do: Defined as Blemish Balm a multi-tasking skin product that truly can be an all in 1 skin product. It’s said to be able to moisturize, provide sun protection, soothe skin, prime skin and give full coverage, dependent on the brand. But you may question isn’t this like a foundation? Not really, we say it’s more like a tinted moisturizer with more coverage and the amazing add on SPF. If you don’t like a heavy foundation but still want coverage, BB cream is for you. It can also be used as a concealer or highlighter, too! They differ from a foundation in that they come in a few prime shades such as light , medium , dark. In order to achieve your desired skin tone coverage you may have to mix this with a bit of your foundation. Newest add to the alphabet - CC CREAM What does it do: The question on every beauty conscience mind is . . . Are CC creams really any different from BB creams, or is it just a marketing tool to get you to commit cash on a totally irrelevant product? Factually, Yes CC creams are different from their predecessor and we find great relevance in this product. CC creams are lighter in texture and natural on the skin almost like you’re wearing nothing. They have more of a whipped, light, fluffy feel and finish. They focus more on actually improving skin tone (color correction), but they’re also supposedly more nurturing and suitable for oilier types thanks to the lighter texture. They are also similar to BB creams in that they provide coverage , sun protection and skin care benefits all in one tube and best of all they boast even more skin anti – aging properties. You can simply cover discoloration, pimples, age spots or sallow skin but it feels like you’re not wearing makeup, even though you’re correcting unevenness of the complexion.” Since the creams are buildable, you can layer on as much or as little pigment as you want.

44

When trying to decide between these two creams, start with deciding what type of coverage you require. If you’re looking for more of a natural look and feel happiest with a quick effortless make up routine that is great for everyday use across all age groups with the added benefit of SPF then walking down the BB cream aisle is best for you. But if have acne , dark spots and discoloration then CC creams will work best in your favour. Plus If you’re looking for more age-defying or antiwrinkle properties it’s best to choose the CC cream.

WHAT’S COOKING CHEF T.K? Former gardener turned Chef, Thokozani Mpungose believes that it was “determination and perseverance” that pulled him out of the crutches of poverty and gave him a chance to realise his dreams. This 32-year-old sous chef at Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani complex was raised in a shack in Durban and worked as a part-time domestic gardener though-out his childhood to pay for his school fees, books and uniforms. “I was raised by a single mother who worked tirelessly to provide food and shelter, I had to help secure my bright future”. At a young age Thokozani was inspired to change his life and understood that the journey and change will be up to him - “That was the turning point in my life and I told myself that I will take myself from zero to hero. It’s been a long and difficult journey for me but I always believe that anything is possible if you put your mind to it”. Mpungose explained he was in grade 11 when he made the decision to pursue a career in the hotel industry, “I loved to cook and was passionate to get into the industry, I often listened to people saying that this type of job was reserved for the girls, But I did not listen to them and persevered”. Mpungose eventually approached his employer and shared the story of his dream. “I had no idea that he was the executive sous chef at Elangeni hotel at the time, I spoke to him about my passion for food and my desire to change my life. A few weeks later I was employed as a casual worker at the hotel and this was the beginning of my new life. I moved from wearing old dirty clothes in the garden to crisp white chefs’ jackets which drove me to work harder and achieve success”. A year later he was permanently employed by the Tsogo Sun group despite the fact that he had no formal training. “I learnt by experience, I approached senior chefs and requested to be taught about hygiene and sanitation in hotel kitchens.

I had to grab this opportunity and show people I could do this well. Even though I worked at the back kitchens, I would still make the time to come out and interact with guests”. He always maintains the training he has been taught and follows rules strictly. The most important rule of management in the hotel industry being “Praise in public and criticize in private’’, He strongly believes in presenting the positive way of working together towards the same goal with his colleagues. Thokozani says that when climbing up the ladder it is very important to acknowledge those individuals that have helped you along the way, remain humble and always respectful. When asked what is his take on vegetarian meals, he simply said “Vegetarian choices are becoming so popular now, it’s a lifestyle choice. A very wise one. I understand that the world is going organic and people are making healthier choices in the hope of improving their health so I have decided to equip myself for this change. We have catered for this in our restaurant by providing a variety of wholesome vegetarian meals,I have been inspired by Tsogo Sun celebrity chef Benny Masekwameng, as well as head chefs in the hotel, Shaun Munro and Clinton Bonhomme who believed in me and my ability”. Thokozani specialises in the preparation of African cuisine with a western twist. When asked which is his favourite kitchen utensil, he boldly states “the wok, I use this for my Chinese stirfrys - My rule in the kitchen is to keep it simple. I don’t like to confuse guests and I believe that food must catch the eye and look appealing. There must also be balance in the look and the taste”.

LUXURY is attention to detail, originality, exclusivity and above all QUALITY

Noreen Sarkhot invited us into her luxury modern family home in Musgrave. She is an interior decorator by trade and had a huge influence with the design and layout of her beautiful home. 1. What were you looking to achieve when deciding on the design of your home? How did you find the balance between accommo dating architectural style and interior con cepts?. As a family we were looking for a comfortable modern family home. We tried to incorporate a lot of timeless design into the home to try and create a look that would wear well over years to come. We went for a modern look fused with a lot of classic pieces which we have collected over the years. The kitchen is very streamlined and has clean modern lines as I prefer to keep the palette clean and simple as it allows me to add whatever is on trend into the space. With the breathtaking views that we enjoy day and night as well as a perfect location, I think we can safely say that will continue to love this home for many years to come. 52

2. What inspired you to design this particular home? We had the idea to keep the flow of the interior of the home to complement with the aesthetics of the exterior of the complex. The decor that I have incorporated into my home is classic contemporary with a hint of organic. It is a home where you can throw just about anything into the space and it will work. 3. How did you go about furnishing this home? This has got to be the most difficult project I have ever embarked on, I guess when it is your own home, decisions don’t come easy. However, I had no problems sourcing soft furnishings as I work with a fantastic team of suppliers both locally as well as from Gauteng and Cape Town. Designing and planning the layout for my children’s room was very close to my heart. I have designed each room to suit the children’s personality. I love to scavenge in second hand shops for beautiful pieces of furniture which were once the beloved possessions of someone else before they were tossed. I love the idea that I can have a vision of my own for something which may be otherwise overlooked ,something which I can turn into a beautiful and totally unique piece that will take pride of place in my home. www.lipstickred.co.za

G

rowing long, beautiful and healthy hair is not an extremely difficult process. It does not require a mass of salon products or a handful of expensive vitamins. What it does take to grow, and keep, long hair in excellent condition is common sense, dedication and a bit of patience. If you make the commitment to closely adhere to the guide below, not only will you grow long hair easily and as fast as humanly possible, it will also be beautiful throughout the entire growing process and stay that way even at extreme lengths. Your ultimate goal is to encourage healthy hair growth. Remember, long damaged hair is never as pretty as shorter healthy hair and because healthy hair needs to be trimmed less often and doesn’t break as easily, the result is much faster growth overall. Always trim often, damage will move up from the ends or point of breakage and the only way to stop it in its tracks is to remove it as soon as it happens. Please be sure to use good tools to trim your hair, using anything else can actually result in more splitting in the long run. If your concern is maintaining your current length, trim a half inch every month. If you are actively growing your hair, trim it a half inch every three or four months, or at the very first sign of damage. Damaged hair doesn’t grow, it breaks and if you ignore, the damage will only get worse. www.lipstickred.co.za

Once you have progressed to the point where your hair is in really good condition, the time between whole-head trims can be extended even longer than six months without a trim. It is best to avoid using any heated appliances whenever possible. No blow drying, no curling irons, no hot rollers, and especially no flat irons or crimpers! If you absolutely must blow dry do so minimally, it is best to let your hair dry naturally for as long as possible and use the blow dryer just to blow dry your hair turned upside down for that added volume.. If you must use hot rollers and a flat iron , use ceramic plates and rollers but if you insist on using curling irons, flat irons or crimpers on a daily basis then sadly long healthy hair isn’t in your future. Chemical additives affect your hair you will be able to effectively choose the products that contain ingredients that are best for your hair type. Essential oils are a great hair booster when trying to grow your hair. We suggest mixing three drops of lavender oil, three drops of rosemary oil, and two drops each of thyme oil and cedarwood oil, along with some jojoba oil. All of this should go right onto your head and the mixture will enhance your hair and make it grow that much faster! 53
