A Not e Fr o m...

February is the month of love and romance; and we have an abundance of it flowing through Issue 102. We start by talking to renowned florist, Ronny Colbie (p.15), who discusses his loves and loathes and shares a tale of giving himself third degree burns live on television. We then spend time with the incredibly charming matchmaker and television love guru, Paul C. Brunson (p.22), who discusses his own love story with wife Jill and offers insight for those looking to find their perfect match.

For those looking forward to their wedding day, The Face Planner shows how best to prepare your skin when counting down to the big event (p.39) and we also talk to Red Carpet Cars about how they can get you to the church on time in style (p.57). This month’s shoot is Mappin & Webb’s new Luxury Collection (p.30), a one-of-a-kind, specially curated range of unique jewellery showcasing the most precious stones with the greatest carat weight and intricate designs to date.

The love-in continues as our resident matchmaker illustrates 5 signs that show you’re in the right relationship (p.46) and from a night under the stars in the Maldives to a Norwegian foodie-focused city stay, our Travel Insider shares his romantic break ideas (p.63).

Also this issue, we showcase seriously good Sunday Roasts in the North West (p.20), get snow ready with Comar Originals (p.28) and our resident fitness expert explains why classes are a great way to reconnect with your body and mind (p.41). We also shine a spotlight on The Yacht in Chester (p.55), trial the Maserati MC20 Cielo (p.73) and take a close look at a modern barn conversion named the ‘Best Private Residential Interior Design’ in the UK (p.83).

There is so much to enjoy in this edition, so please dim the lights, light a candle, get cosy, and enjoy our love and romance issue.

My life ...

How would you describe yourself?

Always rushing around and working the hardest to bring the joy of flowers to my customers and VIP clients. From expert advice to large scale events, to everyday bouquets, being a perfectionist doesn’t come easy.

Where is home? And work?

Home throughout the week and where I work is Balham London. A cosy corner of South West London, filled of dog parks, city coffee shops and local parks where I find myself each morning walking the dogs with a coffee in hand. On the weekends or whenever my partner and I can escape the big smoke we are at our home away from home in the Cotswolds. Our village is tucked between Daylesford Farm and Soho Farmhouse, the perfect place to entertain our city slicker friends and enjoy the best bits of the countryside.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

When I was younger, I wanted to be in fashion. Prior to my career in floristry, I spent time in Paris with a very infamous fashion designer. With him, I quickly learnt the industry was too fickle for me. I was nineteen when I fell in love with a florist, and though our relationship had ended my love for floristry flourished. Working with flowers means I work alongside so many other creatives who appreciate flowers as much as I do. From interior designers, fashion events, and set designers, wherever you look flowers are in situ, understated, yet impeccable and fill me with so much inspiration.

What or who inspires you?

My mother raised my brother and I to take pride in where we lived and how our homes represent a part of our personalities and creative preferences. Today I feel so blessed to work with many clients that have such beautiful homes and interiors. Walking into some of

these spaces, my mind flickers around the room, thinking of how one of my floral designs can elevate a space further, to complement, enhance, not overpower and dominate. Of course, my garden is a huge inspiration for me too, the fragrance of the French roses and peonies, a real naturalness of an English garden.

What was the last gift you gave someone?

This Christmas after partnering with both Jo Malone and Ralph Lauren, it followed that everyone around me were given the gift of their fragrances. My personal favourite is Ralph Lauren’s ‘California Dreaming’, which I gave the entire collection to my partner Steve. My mother and friends were given ‘Orange Bitters’, my favourite scent in the Jo Malone range at Christmas.

Tell us a secret/fun fact?

In December, I was filming a segment on ‘This Morning’ and gave myself a third-degree burn on live television without anyone knowing. Not sure how I managed as I was in agony, I guess I can thank my stage mother for that!

Your mastermind subject?

Horticulture is the obvious one, but I love a good music category. I listen to music 80% of my day and have memorised more lyrics than anyone I’ve ever met.

What’s been your biggest life lesson?

I think my biggest life lesson is learning to surround myself with people who uplift me and not allow myself to get bogged down by people and situations I have no power to control. I’ve learnt everyone in life has a different perspective and I can’t judge the steps they’ve walked, the decisions they make or their reactions. I’ve learnt that the only one who has the power over myself is me, so I focus on that and enjoy being my own best friend and learning new lessons each and every day.

Seriously Good Sunday Roasts

It’s undeniable that the Sunday roast is a beloved staple of British tradition, so we have listed our favourite roasts to try in the North West

Hawksmoor, Liverpool

As the new kid in the city, Hawksmoor has plenty of established competition but has more than staked their claim as the best roast in Liverpool. Their British-reared beef rump is full of flavour and cooked to a rosy medium-rare – first over charcoal, then in the oven. It’s paired with fluffy potatoes roasted in beef dripping, greens, carrots, garlic cloves and sweet roasted shallots, plus lashings of bone marrow and onion gravy. When booking, please keep in mind their caveat: ‘We can’t guarantee roasts will be available after 5pm’. thehawksmoor.com

Upstairs at the Grill, Chester

If you like your Sunday lunches big and bold, Upstairs at the Grill’s iconic Sunday Lunch service is back with a bang. Head Chef Ben Rutherford works closely with selected farmers and butchers each week to seek out the very best aged, unique and limited cuts. Matched up with a giant Yorkshire and all the trimmings, this little corner of Watergate street is the perfect spot to drink, dine and rejoice. upstairsatthegrill.co.uk

Ducie Street Warehouse, Manchester

Let’s start with the very best…Manchester’s Ducie Street Warehouse has been named the best Sunday Roast in the UK by acclaimed platform, Rate Good Roasts. Now in its fifth year, the annual ranking of 100 roast dinners is based on a whole host of factors including quality of gravy, Yorkshire puddings, service and value.

Headed by Executive Chef Scott Munro, Sunday with Sides features a mouth-watering menu of classic roasts. All served with proper roast potatoes, giant Yorkshire pudding, seasonal vegetables and bottomless gravy, the roast menu includes dry-aged local shorthorn beef sirloin; W.H. Frost premium chicken breast; Rosemary roasted leg of lamb; and a weekly special for Vegan roast. And for those who can get indecisive with their roast option, Something For Everyone includes a slice of all the meat roasts.

Performing beyond the classic roasts and its trimmings, the restaurant also has an exclusive menu dedicated to Cauliflower Cheese that includes Bacon frazzles cauliflower cheese; Totally vegan cauliflower cheese; Four cheese cauliflower cheese and more.

Paul, what is your love story?

Some people say our meeting was romantic; some people say I was being a thug. We met in school and at the time Jill (my wife) was dating one of my friends. I gave him my car in college, and I loaned him $20 and I knew he would take that and leave campus and hang out with some other people. So, when he took my car and $20, I went and knocked on her door and started talking to her. We started as friends and grew into best friends and grew into two people that romantically loved each other.

You become a matchmaker after your wedding – what led you down this path?

Before I entered the world of matchmaking, I had a career in finance in investment banking. Then in the evenings, I ran a non-profit that helped underserved kids, that we tutored. They came from impoverished households and one of the questions asked to enter the programme was, “how many

parents live in the household?”. Out of all of our kids, not one had both parents (living at home). Most were living with just their mother, or grandmother and there was very little male representation in their household. The councillors at the camp would joke with me and say “Paul you look so concerned about this, why don’t you just start hooking up all the moms? You need to matchmake the moms”. At first, it was a joke, but that led me to think that we are tutoring these kids, but fundamentality there is something missing in their household. That’s what led me down the path. A year later I came up with the idea to become a matchmaker.

22
Feature | The CHESHIRE Magazine
Craig Hough sits under the learning tree of internationally acclaimed TV matchmaker and entrepreneur Paul C. Brunson

This led you to work with the Queen of US Media Oprah Winfrey, who said you were “much more than a matchmaker”. How was your time working with her?

It’s interesting, I call her Oprah, but when you work with her you call her “Miss Winfrey”. She changed my life. There were two big ways she changed my life; one was just by working with her. By working with Oprah, she legitimises you as she says she only works with the best in the world. That legitimised me and helped grow my professional brand so that I’m appreciative of. Secondly, just observing her and how she interacted was a training ground. I worked with her for 3 years, so I was able to see how she interacted, and I wrote an article called 20 things I learned working for two billionaires, and I chronicle so many of the lessons I was able to observe from her. Things I still use to this day.

You and your family moved over to London to film Married at First Sight and Celebs Go Dating, how do you find the UK and attention around the shows?

I’m in South London, Dulwich, I love London. My wife loves it; my sons love it. When we moved over,

we did an entire loop around the UK. We did Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland, across to Scotland, right up to the Highlands. I think Manchester is one of the best cities in the world, period. It’s super diverse, the food is incredible and so many innovations came out of Manchester.

When we walk down the street people stop all the time and psychologically it’s affirming because its people saying, “I appreciate your work. I see what you’re doing. And what I love most is when people say, “Hey Paul, I really listen to your words on the show” or they say, “you’ve helped me somehow”, so for me, it’s all love. When Married at First Sight is on, we are stopped all the time and I appreciate it.

Speaking of Married at First Sight, on an episode during the last series you said, “interests mean nothing in terms of compatibility – what means everything is values.” What kind of conversations should new couples be having on values before committing to a relationship?

Values are your rules to life. That’s how you have decided to live your life. Interests come from the values. For example, my wife and I are creatives. A value is creativity. She likes 80’s rock music and I like hip-hop. We don’t like the same music, so we don’t have the same interest when it comes to that, but we are grounded in our love of creativity. I appreciate that she appreciated that music. So, values are the rulebook to life.

To your question, if you’re dating, find out where your partner spends their free time and their free

23

money, so their extra time and their extra money. On a Sunday, when they are not working, what do they do with their time? Where do they spend their money? Because wherever you spend your time and money, that is what you value.

After so many years working in the industry, what is it that you still love about it that keeps you motivated?

Every day we have had success stories. Let’s look at Married at First Sight. People look at it and say, “oh it’s entertainment” but it’s the most successful dating franchise in the world. Two series ago we had a 75% success rate. Last series we had a 25% success rate, which is still higher than any dating app. We already have Married at First Sight babies. The science works. And that’s just the show. Outside of the show, countless people may say, “Paul you said something on Celebs Go Dating that my husband and I used and saved our marriage.” It’s countless, that’s what really drives me.

With many people living in the big cities using apps as a way of fast fashion dating, meeting many potential partners, with no long term relationship in sight. What guidance would you offer?

The first is to get incredibly clear about the type of relationship you want to have because that wasn’t a thing 20 years ago. There was basically marriage, or you could be single. But now, you can be not married, in a committed, non-monogamous

relationship, or you could be in a married, polyamorous relationship, or you could be in a committed, monogamous relationship but not married. There are so many different options, so get clear about what you want. The most important thing to be clear about is; are you interested in “short-term dating” (or in the evolutionary psychology world we call it “short term mating”) or are you interested in long-term dating (mating). The reason why is that your strategies become completely different depending on which route, you’re going.

You have to come up with a plan. People are intentional about their career and their work-out regime, but how intentional are they really about their love life? Most people are not. Most people get on a dating app and that’s all they do. So, the second piece of advice is to become intentional through a plan. The best plan is to be on 2 or 3 dating apps, but you also want to involve your friends to help matchmake and also look to work. Work has the highest success rate when it comes to marriages remaining together. If you look at 100 people that get married on a dating app and 100 people that get married through meeting a spouse at work, the work relationships are going to last longer and be more successful. There’s science behind it. Typically, people we work with share our values and are in the same socio-economic category and geography as us, so there are many reasons why.

The thing I would say, in terms of people getting intentional is to spend more time on what

24

you actually like about the person versus what you don’t like about the person. It’s using an open mindset versus a closed mindset. Most people when they go out on dates - because they have so many dates – don’t put a lot of emphasis and value in the date. They are like, “It’s not even a date, we’re gonna have drinks. Later this week I’m gonna meet 5 more people, so you don’t really mean much to me. I don’t like the way you hold your glass, it looks crazy, you must be crazy”. Instead, they should train their mind to think about the 2 or 3 things that they really like about the person and focus on that.

Any tips for couples who are hitting the 7 year itch to help revive their relationship?

You tend to see a high percentage of divorces or separations in couples who have been together 5 – 7 years, and once you get beyond the 7 there’s actually another bump at 10. After you’re past the 10 years, it’s usually smoother sailing. But the key is; the best time to work on your marriage is before you get married. A lot of what I think the “7 Year Itch” is, is people realising they are not with the right partner. The key is to be very confident on the front end, that you’re with the right partner, by doing the work, knowing your values, having the vision etc. But if you get to that point where you feel you may not be with the right partner, this is where

therapy comes into play, and you should spend more time together. Most spouses spend less time with their partner than anyone else in their life. They spend more time with their work colleagues than they do with their actual spouses. So, therapy, spending intentional time with your spouse understanding that relationships are bids and you have to continually put in a bid for love. It’s not like you are 7 years into your relationship and you don’t have to continue to say “I love you” anymore or continue to show appreciation. You have to do that every day constantly, back and forth. And sometimes, you need to put 5 bids in before you get the bid back.

What makes a successful relationship in your eyes?

All couples and individuals need to define what success is. That’s very important. And not to compare. I always say, “compare leads to despair”. And that’s a big problem at Married at First Sight, and the reason we have the dinner parties. Because everyone walks in and start comparing their relationship with someone else. You don’t want to compare what your “success is” to someone else; you have to define it for yourself.

Inevitably, what will drive success, is intentional time, and that is in every aspect of our lives. If you want to become incredible at rugby, it means intentional time and practising. My 8 year loves to edit, he is a YouTuber and edits and has become really good because of intentional time he has spent editing. So, everything in life requires intentional effort and time, and your relationship is no different.

AS K THE E XPE R T

HOW ARE YOU BEST TO PREPARE YOUR SKIN WHEN COUNTING DOWN TO A BIG EVENT? HOW FAR OUT SHOULD YOU START THINKING ABOUT A SKINCARE PLAN?

I have learnt that patience is a virtue when it comes to skincare results. Too often, we try products for a week at a time hoping to see results instantly, but the truth is many skincare ingredients need months of consistent use to have a real effect.

No matter what some products claim, everything your skin needs to glow can’t be found in one product either. That is why I created The Face Planner, an effective and curated set of ingredients and products designed to be used for three months when counting down to a big event whether that is a wedding, milestone birthday, red carpet moment or any other event where you want to look and feel your best.

You need to start by thinking about your skin cell turnover – which on average is 30 days however this can slow down with age, hormones and stress. Your skin cell turnover is the time it takes skin cells from the bottom layers of your skin to be sloughed away and start revealing new skin cells from underneath. This is when you would start to notice results from the products that you’ve been using, as these new skin cells are the ones that have been nourished by the new ingredients.

High quality ingredients are key and should work together – all of The Face Planner products and ingredients have been formulated to balance and enhance one another. For that coveted glow, your skin needs a combination of deeply hydrating and nourishing ingredients, natural exfoliants, antioxidants and active ingredients.

HIGH QUALITY INGREDIENTS

You’ll find both low-molecular weight and high-molecular hyaluronic acid in our serum which simply means your skin will be plumped on the outer layer and hydrated at a deeper level too. Our toner includes natural exfoliants, glycolic acid and lactic acid, to gently slough away dead skin cells and prepare your skin to better absorb the other products in your plan. Ceramides and peptides are used throughout our formulas at varying levels, to support your skin barrier and encourage the production of collagen and elastin. Vitamin C and niacinamide are antioxidant ingredients used to help protect your skin against environmental aggressors like UV and pollution. When using our combination of products, you might start to see some improvement in your skin after one month, but you really need to give your skin a few cycles before you start seeing visible results. That’s why I recommend using The Face Planner products for at least three months before a big event, and if you are a real planner you could start six months out for even better results!

I find classes are a great way to reconnect with your own body and mind and the perfect way to meet like minded people. Being part of a community is really uplifting and gives you another incentive to join in. There are lots of amazing options to choose from, here are a few of my favourites I think you should try

High Intensity classes are great to get the blood pumping. They come in all shapes and sizes and can be achieved from beginners onwards. Pay attention to your own body and the advice of your instructors. It is absolutely essential when starting any new activity, you are physically ok to participate before jumping in at the deep end.

Indoor cycling like Spin and Cyclo burn more calories than any other class. Most classes are between 30-40 minutes and an average calorie burn of 400 calories in just 30 mins. It is a brilliant, short sharp calorie burn that I love.

together is when the real magic happens, and the zen 10 minutes in the hammock after a full body workout is pure bliss.

I absolutely love Boot Camp style classes, they are fast paced, energetic and really give you that endorphin buzz. There are so many options to choose from such as Barrys Bootcamp and Inferno, which all employ HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) with short, sharp bursts of 100% effort interjected with active recovery sets.

Body Pump - this is by far the best class for getting lean. Designed by Les Mills fitness professionals their Body Pump is incredible. Afterwards, you get that lovely burn feeling without being superbly sweaty and walk out with the knowledge that you have worked pretty much every muscle group in one class!

Both Pilates and Reformer Pilates are forms of movement that are incredible for working out and recovery post injury. Designed to help lighten the load on your spine, Pilates also improves your posture flexibility and core strength. Reformer Pilates takes the mat exercises onto a specially designed machine based on a system of pulleys and springs that vary the tension and intensity of the workout, giving you the ability to increase the tension as your confidence grows.

Meditation and Yoga Retreat Days are both available at The Farm Club set in 300 acres of beautiful Cheshire countryside. Utilising the stunning surroundings, this family run venue encourages you to drop out of the stimuli from daily busy lives and drop into the stimuli of nature within a community of like minded people. I really feel that engaging in exercise, retreats and meditation as part of a wider group is a huge motivator and a great stress reliever.

Another fabulous extension of an established form of exercising is Trapeze Yoga which utilises the wonders of gravity to give you deeper stretches, develop strength and encourage flexibility. Enjoy being guided through a fluid series of dynamic postures using your breath to connect mind and body, creating strength, balance and harmony throughout. Learning

Muve - muvelive.com is a unique video streaming service which has been designed specifically for fitness classes and personal training. The virtual studio creates an immersive online fitness experience with everything from music streaming and on screen stopwatches to simple scheduling and payment tools, making online fitness hassle free.

WORDS:

Alex Mellor-Brook ,

Dating and Relationship Coach, Co-founder at Select Personal Introductions

Nobody wants to waste their time -so how do we know if we’re investing in a relationship that’s good for us, that’s going to stand the test of time, that’s full of growth and challenge, fun and mutual respect? Here are 5 key features of all strong relationships:

Making Joint Decisions

This is not a romcom scenario of going on a first date and finding out that you both love aquarium visits or ice hockey. Those moments are great when they happen, but no indicator of a long-term successful partnership. Making joint decisions is about the negotiations that daily life requires: who’s going to cook on an evening when you’ve both had a tough day, how do you divide Christmas between your two families, when to start telling people that you’re committed to each other? The ability to negotiate these decisions is a real indicator of relationship rightness.

Supporting Each Other

Whether it’s a cup of tea when you need it, your partner standing up for you in a family argument or helping them with a task you find boring, the willingness of two people to provide, and receive, support is a clear sign of the rightness of a relationship that’s growing.

You Can Agree To Disagree

The true measure of a relationship is what happens when we fight. Strong, healthy relationships aren’t necessarily based on agreeing, but on robust disagreeing. Allowing others to be themselves, to have ideas and opinions different to our own, isn’t just respectful; it shows that we have confidence in our own views, without having to convert others to them. Couples who can find a way to accept each other without slavishly agreeing on everything have a much better chance of coping with the challenges that life will throw at them. There may even be an evolutionary benefit to this: just as we choose people with DNA very different to our own to avoid inbreeding, we may also benefit from partners with different ideas to our own, because that gives a couple twice the chance of being right - as long as one half is willing to accept they might be wrong!

Maintaining Balance

Couples with great long-lasting stories generally have outside interests. Why? Because encouraging each other to enjoy what they love gives their relationship

new oxygen. Conversely, becoming over-reliant on each other can lead to a sense of being stifled. Building independence as well as interdependence increases self-confidence and self-esteem.

Having Downtime Together

This is perhaps the key factor in determining if you’re in the right relationship. Being able to relax and enjoy each other’s company is one of the greatest pleasures that a harmonious partnership can bring us - and it’s one of those things we can’t force or fake. If you’re asking yourself if your relationship is right for you, an honest response to how much you enjoy being with your partner when there’s nothing going on might provide the answer.

MEET THE CHEF: GARETH JONES

Head Chef at Bread Street Kitchen & Bar Liverpool

What’s your first food related memory? The smell of roast chicken coming from my Nana’s coal fire oven.

When did you know you wanted to be a chef? When I first stepped foot in a professional kitchen, Crabwall Manor, I knew it was for me.

Where were you trained, and how did you find your training?

My real training began at Crabwall Manor in Chester, I loved every minute as everything was so new and there was so much to learn.

What do you love most about your job? Being able to be creative and designing dishes for our guests can enjoy.

Describe your style in three words. Simple. Seasonal. Tasty.

What’s your favourite dish to create? I love working with fresh pasta, such as making tortellini or ravioli. I find it really relaxing and calming.

Where do you draw your creative inspiration from? I always try to draw inspiration from the seasons and the incredible produce we have in the North West of England.

What four ingredients are necessary in your kitchen? Sea salt, British virgin rapeseed oil, good quality stock and thyme.

What are you most proud of in your career? Having the opportunity to work for some amazing chefs; Mike Truelove, Simon Radley, Simon Rogan and now Gordon Ramsay.

Who is your biggest supporter?

I have an amazingly supportive wife Claire and family around me but I would say my son Rhys is my biggest supporter.

What would you want to have as your last meal? Spaghetti bolognese and garlic bread.

Are there any foods you just don’t like? I would like to think I will try anything but tinned mushy peas, I just can’t understand…

What do you think is the most challenging ingredient to work with?

Fish in general is tough, it takes great skill to prepare and then cook.

Do you do the cooking at home?

I love cooking at home when I get chance, I have a smoker and enjoy smoking ribs, wings and anything I can.

What advice would you offer to an aspiring chef? Don’t rush, learn in the best environment you can and soak everything up.

Red Carpet Cars offer a luxury VIP chauffeur experience throughout Cheshire and the North West

The company was created back in 2016 by Mike Arthur, who saw a gap in the market to provide a very high quality service in terms of cars and chauffeurs for weddings and VIP events

We talked to Michael Price who works in Operations and is a Head Chauffeur at the company about the company’s beginnings. Michael shared, “The premise behind the idea of Red Carpet Cars was that our service ethos was to treat each client like a red carpet VIP and that is how the brand started to develop. As reputation spread about the service, we found more and more clients coming to us to secure our services, mostly for weddings but also for VIP events and funerals as well. Today, we are proud to have built a strong client base with many satisfied clients and testimonials, and in late 2022 we took the opportunity to update our brand, introduce new gifts and plans for our wedding clients, and we refocused our VIP services to be even better.”

The Fleet

The company has two flagship vehicles that Michael believes accurately represent what Red Carpet Cars stands for as a chauffeur company.

Mike said, “The Rolls Royce Phantom is at the apex of car luxury and continues to be associated with the highest marque of vehicle on the road today. The exterior is commanding and head-turning, and the interior is the epitome of indulgence. Red Carpet Cars also have the Bentley Flying Spur; the identity of this car is unmistakable and never fails to impress clients and wedding guests alike. With a sumptuous interior and custom updated exterior, the Bentley stands apart but also twins nicely with the Rolls Royce Phantom.”

He added, “as part of a wider car company group, we also have access to some of the most beautiful and iconic cars in the world, so while our workhorse fleet remains as 2, our flexibility to accommodate additional vehicle requirements is always there.”

Service That Goes

The Extra Mile

Confidentiality of clients is always foremost in the minds of the team at Red Carpet Cars; however, with anonymity, Michael offered a heart-warming chauffeur journey that he looks back on fondly.

He shared, “One wedding we had the pleasure of providing our chauffeur service for was for a bride whose parents had recently passed and therefore could not be there at her wedding. While it wasn’t initially part of the plan for the day, the bride asked if we could stop at the cemetery where her parents were laid to rest to allow her to spend a few moments alone in reflection. It was very emotional, and we were only too pleased to make this happen for her. We provide our cars for up to 4 hours, so no rushing, no timekeeping by us, just a focus on the bride and groom and wedding party for that one special day in their lives.”

Naples has so much to offer, especially for art lovers looking for something authentic, bold and soulful and is one of the best cities in Italy for contemporary art (think: pop art, arte povera, conceptual art, and photography. Some 2023 highlights include:

Naples and Paris Art Exchange

T he Tr a vel Insi d er

Romance can be many things to many people; however, few can resist the allure of an escape for two. So, whether your idea of quality time revolves around culture, adventure, the beach, or something in-between, I have a few ideas to get you started.

Few spots on earth are more romantic than the Maldives. One of my favourite resorts is Milaidhoo, which I would describe as a small island with a big heart. Your escape could begin with a couples’ spa treatment or a night under the stars on a remote sandbank. Beach and overwater villas are butlerserviced with private pools, and you may spot manta rays in the bay between May and October. inspiringtravel.co.uk

From the ‘big five’ to the bluest ocean, little compares to a safari and beach break for two. I love how our experts at Rainbow (rainbowtours.co.uk) know the most unforgettable camps, where you don’t even have to leave your pool or bed to see wildlife sauntering past. Post safari, you can hop over to the Indian Ocean to wind down on a white-sand beach.

With shorter flights allowing for more quality time together, Europe shouldn’t be overlooked for a couple’s break. Named European Region of Gastronomy in 2022, Trondheim in Norway is perfect if you’re looking for a foodie-focused city. Regent (regent-holidays.co.uk) has recently picked the Britannia Hotel as the city’s best spot to stay, where Michelin-starred meals and handcrafted Hästens beds create the perfect base. Alternatively, up the romance factor by staying in the City of Love itself. If you like the sound of combining

Parisian sights with an iconic sporting event, why not plan an extra-special stay with a day at the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe races? Our Spectate Travel Specialists offer VIP experiences for an incredible trip.

H ist o ric C ha r m in the h eart of Kens i n g to n

Once the home of Victorian aristocrat William Alexander, 100 Queen’s Gate Hotel has now been transformed into a luxury 5 star haven, visited by Kate Kinsella

Location

Nestled in the heart of London’s ever-evolving Brompton Design District, 100 Queen’s Gate hotel offers a calming sanctuary away from the bustling streets of Kensington.

There really isn’t anything this intriguing part of London doesn’t offer. Want to gaze at the latest exhibition of hidden Tibetan treasures or judge the fashion archives of old Hollywood? Head to the Victoria & Albert Museum. Curious about the discoveries of the hidden corners of the world? The Natural History Museum will certainly have what you are looking for. In in the mood for something to keep that sweet tooth satisfied? visit one of the charming bakeries on the famous Old Brompton Road. All that you could need is conveniently within walking distance of the stylish 100 Queen’s Gate hotel.

Rooms

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that this charming 18th Century Townhouse is home to an impressive 228 rooms and suites. A kind member of the hotel team proudly informs me that no two rooms are the same and every category has been carefully

designed to offer a unique experience to each guest.

I have to say, something that this hotel is particularly skilled in is ensuring you do not feel like one of many guests and actually offers an experience that feels exclusive to very few. A sign of a well operated hotel in my book.

My abode for the night was in one of the ‘Superior Queen’ rooms. I felt for a solo traveller and a one-night stay, this charming little room accommodated me well. The mix of traditional and contemporary interior design has been well thought out and although a starting category, you certainly don’t feel you are missing out on the 5 star touches like the fancy coffee machine, fluffy slippers and of course, the all-important luxury bedding.

Facilities

The team at 100 Queen’s Gate Hotel understand the importance of home away from home amenities including a space for wellbeing and exercise, meeting rooms for those all-important negotiations and a relaxing and picturesque library lounge to recharge the social batteries in.

There is no denying the time and creative skill that has gone into the aesthetics of this property. The design team have truly created a boutique masterpiece throughout the entirety of the hotel.

Another special touch is the option to take one of the hotel's bicycles out for a spin. If you are lucky enough

to get one of London’s crisp and sunny days, be sure to ask the front desk to take one out and head off to explore one of the many parks the city has to offer.

Not forgetting the tempting dining options this hotel has to offer, where you can enjoy a delicious and hearty meal at the Belgian inspired W/A Kensington or opt for a cocktail and some small plates to share at ESQ bar.

True to English tradition, the hotel also offers a wonderful afternoon tea experience in Botanica. This was my favourite space in the hotel given its dreamy aesthetic. Dressed with Cherry Blossom and bright white shutters as well as delicate mirrors and turquoise velvet furnishings. A truly special part of the hotel to experience.

My Experience

After many years of working in the luxury travel industry, you can become quite critical of what a ‘5 star’ property really means and question how many hotels that are given this rating actually live up to their star rating in reality. For me, I felt what stands out the most about the 100 Queen’s Gate Hotel is the people who work tirelessly to deliver personal and quality service to their guests.

The staff make the vision of a ‘home away from home’ come to life through the caring way they interact with their guests. Leaving the stuffy and rigid old-fashioned rules of 5 star service behind and replacing them with a fresh and guest centred service environment. When you are a resident of the country’s capital, you can quickly forget all that your home city has to offer. Staying at 100 Queen’s Gate Hotel reminded me of how lucky I am to have access to the treasures of the city at my fingertips and for that, I am very grateful.

Personal Highlight

For me, my evening in the in-house W/A Kensington restaurant made my stay. As I walked towards the open doors of the restaurant, I was greeted by a friendly waitress who gave me a choice of tables for me

to choose from depending on what would make me feel most comfortable.

I quickly spot one of my favourite dishes on the list of starters. Mozzarella’s more indulgent better half, Burrata. Next, I do what I am particularly skilled in which is going over and over the mains as if it is the last meal I will ever be allowed to enjoy. I soon get tired of dissecting each dish and settle for the Salmon accompanied by seasonal vegetables, I then worry unnecessarily that what I have ordered is in danger of being ‘too healthy’ and panic order some chunky truffle and parmesan chips at the last minute. The lovely waitress did a grand job of assuring me my addition was absolutely vital to the enjoyment of my meal.

Each course is clearly made with care, the Burrata presented with juicy cherry tomatoes and grapefruit segments. The salmon has a deliciously crispy skin and juicy melt-in-the-mouth texture, the truffle chips are generously coated with truffle and parmesan.

Next, the lovely waitress convinces me that it would be regrettable to leave the restaurant without at least trying one of the desserts. In all honesty, it took all of a second to get me to agree and I order a selection of small chocolate covered sweet treats. Also made with culinary magic to my delight.

After sharing my shame with the giggling waitress, I head down to take a peek at the ever-so-chic Esq Bar. Everything feels so calm and tranquil, light Saturday night music can be heard in the background and everyone looks as if they are floating on a cloud of relaxation, curled up in the cosiness the space has to offer. I politely decline the charming barman’s offer of a nightcap and head up to my room ready for a good night’s sleep. hilton.com

When you think of Porsche off-roaders, you think of the Cayenne or the Macan. But the 911? Not so much. Yet it’s the 911 that has competed in rallying, and to remind everyone just how brilliant the old Porsches were, the German brand has launched a new off-road version of its latest-generation 911. Dubbed the 911 Dakar, the car is based on the existing 473bhp, all-wheel-drive Carrera 4S model, but it sits 50mm higher and can be raised by another 30mm. Add in all-terrain tyres and a roof rack, and you’ve got the ultimate adventure sports car. The catch? Just 2,500 will be built.

RALLY RAGE

Forget the Urus SUV; the Huracan Sterrato is the off-road Lamborghini we’ve all been waiting for

The idea of an off-road Lamborghini has been around for some time. First there was the ill-fated LM002 –a kind of Italian Hummer – and then there was the far more successful Urus. But it seems Lamborghini’s designers couldn’t sit back and relax while the factory churned out 4x4s for willing customers. Instead, they took the off-road Lamborghini concept to new extremes with this: the Huracan Sterrato.

Under the skin, it’s essentially a Huracan like any other. There’s a 5.2-litre V10 engine behind the seats, and the power goes to all four wheels. It has much the same body, too, albeit with some off-road cladding to toughen it up a little.

The real difference is in the ride height. The Sterrato sits 44mm higher than the standard Huracan EVO, while the wheels are further apart.

Keeping you up to date with all the latest motoring and technology news

The car also has underbody panels to protect it from flying gravel and there’s fresh electronic tech to help drivers control the car on loose surfaces.

Inside, customers will find four-point racing harnesses and carbon bi-shell sports seats, as well as aluminium floor panels. It’s designed to feel like a rally car, but we’ll have to wait and see whether it manages that in the metal. The first cars are expected to go into production sometime this year. THE CAR FORMERLY KNOWN AS…

The car once simply known as the Audi e-tron is now the Audi Q8 e-tron, but the German has done more than just change the badge on the back. For 2023, Audi has given the Q8 e-tron better aerodynamics and an optimised battery, which means you can go further on a charge. Up to 343 miles, in fact. Audi is also offering faster charging and a slightly revised rear motor, but the line-up is essentially the same as before. Customers can still choose between two body shapes – the standard SUV is joined by the more coupe-like Sportback – and there’s three different motor options. All three offer all-wheel drive, but the most powerful SQ8 e-tron models get a third motor for added performance. Q8 e-tron, from £67,800, audi.co.uk

TO BE BESIDE THE SEA

The year 1993 was special for all manner of reasons, but buried among those many reasons was the Mini Convertible. As the early ‘90s turned to the mid-90s, the first convertible Mini was revealed to the world. And now Mini is celebrating the anniversary with a special version of the modern Mini Convertible. Dubbed the Seaside Edition, it’s based on the Cooper S model and comes adorned with decals and eye-catching Caribbean Aqua exterior paint. Power comes from a 2.0-litre petrol engine, which produces a total of 176bhp Mini Seaside, from £34,500, mini.co.uk

Maserati has hit gold with its new MC20 supercar, but will the open-top Cielo version make the Ferrari rival better or worse? James Fossdyke went to find out

There are some things you just can’t do. We’re all well aware of the rules surrounding murder and shoplifting, but more minor indiscretions can still provoke outrage. You wouldn’t wear jeans at a wedding, for example, and you certainly won’t be wearing a football shirt at a golf club any time soon.

Another faux pas is publicly humiliating your most popular workmates – a move that’s more or less guaranteed to make you a pariah in the office. For years, that social no-no has left Italian car maker Maserati fighting its rivals with one hand tied behind its back. When Ferrari is your sister company, you can’t go around making the Prancing Horse look silly. But now Maserati is under new ownership, and divorce from Ferrari was part of the deal. All of which means the Italian manufacturer is free to do what it wants when it wants. And that means showing Ferrari who is really in charge.

To do that, the company launched the MC20 supercar, a two-seat coupe with a stellar 3.0-litre V6 engine positioned just behind the driver for optimum weight distribution. With 621bhp, it was capable of more than 200mph, and it could accelerate just as quickly as Ferrari’s latest creation: the 818bhp Ferrari 296 GTB. The MC20 coupe was, and still is, epic. It’s fast, it’s light on its feet and the interior manages to be cool and modern without feeling pared back. Best of all, it looks absolutely fantastic. From the roofline to the exhaust exits halfway up the rear bumper, it’s a fabulous piece of automotive design, and one that’s well worthy of its place alongside the 296 GTB.

But that gave Maserati a problem when it wanted to build the inevitable open-top version. Dubbed

the Cielo, which means ‘sky’, it has an electrically folding solid roof with a glass panel, which is great for letting the light in, but a bit tricky to fold and stow when you want the wind in your hair.

So Maserati went back to the drawing board and tweaked the entire rear end of the car, raising the rear deck to accommodate the roof and fitting an electric folding mechanism, as well as some buttresses behind the head rests. As a result, the MC20 Cielo has lost the see-through panel over the engine, but that’s the only sacrifice you’ll make. Although it’s slightly different, the Cielo is no less beautiful than the coupe – at least not with the roof lowered – and it gains the glass sunroof, as well as a retractable rear window. And despite the fact Maserati has made no changes at all to the sonorous V6 engine, the heavier Cielo is still just as fast as the coupe.

The sprint from 0-62mph still takes less than three seconds, and the top speed is still over 200mph. And it’s equally fast in corners. Normally, cutting away the roof would make a supercar softer and floppier than its hard-top sibling, but Maserati has managed to keep the two cars closer than most in terms of rigidity. That means the Cielo is every bit as sharp to drive, with light, fast, and precise steering, as well as huge amounts of grip. As with the coupe, all the power goes to the rear wheels, so it will misbehave if provoked, but the whole car feels natural and easy to control despite its potency. It’s comfortable, too. Okay, you won’t mistake it for a Rolls-Royce, but in its softest setting it’s more than comfy enough for a long motorway drive.

And that isn’t the only great thing about the Cielo. Because of the new retractable rear window, visibility is infinitely improved (because there is some), and you get better access to the sound of the engine, even when the roof is up. No matter what the weather is doing outside, you can always drop that window to hear the glorious Italian engine, which has so much character Maserati gave it a name: Nettuno. In the coupe, it sounds stellar from the outside, but muffled inside, whereas the Cielo gives you full access to its vocal range at all times.

What’s more, the glass roof panel sheds some light on the stunning interior, with its beautifully

sculpted seats and clean dashboard. The build quality is largely brilliant, save for a few buttons on the steering wheel, and even the technology is good. The touchscreen is a massive improvement on what’s gone before in Maserati products, and though the satellite navigation appears to be stolen from a Peugeot, it works reasonably well. That’s all good news, because Maserati has hidden numerous functions in the touchscreen to achieve that clean design. Even the roof switch is in there, as is a control to change the opacity of the glass roof, giving you some privacy when you want it. But the best bit is the rear-view mirror, or should that be the rear-view camera? Because visibility is still limited, Maserati has fitted a camera on the bumper, and its view is displayed on the rear-view mirror, giving

you a clear view of the road behind. It takes some getting used to, and if you don’t like it you can switch to a conventional mirror with the flick of a switch, but bear with it, because it’s a very useful gizmo.

Of course, much of the MC20 Cielo’s brilliance is shared with the considerably cheaper MC20 coupe, but choosing the convertible version feels like a bit of a no-brainer. With the roof up, you get the same awesome performance and handling, as well as marginally better visibility, while taking the roof off gets you closer to the noise of that howling V6 engine. Yes, a Ferrari 296 is arguably a better car, but the MC20 runs it so close the argument is irrelevant. But the clincher is not the looks or the speed or the roof. It’s the rarity and the way it makes you stand out. Ferrari is making some brilliant cars these days, and there’s something glorious about the badge, but they can feel a bit… unimaginative. It’s like supporting Real Madrid or drinking Champagne. It’s just as much fun (if not more so) to watch Macclesfield FC and drink Cremant de Loire, but it makes you more interesting. The same goes for the Maserati.

Design by UBER share the creative process behind their conversion, awarded ‘The Best Private Residential Interior Design in the UK’ at the highly prestigious International Property Awards

THE BRIEF

In light of Design by UBER’s recent award win, we caught up with the MD, Simon Evans who immediately saw potential to take this property on as his own personal project. “My vision was to remodel this modest Grade II listed former barn with a dated interior and turn it into a remarkable home fitted with super-luxurious touches at every turn whilst nurturing the full period character of the property.” Simon explains his bold idea; a complete reconfiguration to better incorporate the scenic hill-top views, (by creating a glass ‘box’ kitchen extension) whilst modernising and fully realising the period potential. The upper floors were to be fully rethought to better accommodate a modern family in a characterful living environment.

EMBRACING THE CHARACTER & IMPLEMENTING A BRAND-NEW LAYOUT

One issue they came across was the first floor room layout, as it was in an awkward configuration and didn’t make for easy modern living. They also knew that the old structure of the building would potentially restrict or even make certain desirable materials like marbles impossible to be incorporated into the designs due to the risk of the weight involved.

“To overcome this obstacle we came up with a solution of building an internal steel framework

Homes and Interiors 83
Feature
The CHESHIRE Magazine | Home

which allowed all the original beams and character features to be fully displayed without continuing to act as a load-bearing structure. This left the outer walls to be a full character facade internally and externally.” Simon. With regards to the upper floor layout, it needed to be rethought entirely to make better use of the space. They achieved this by sacrificing the multiple smaller rooms for fewer, larger en-suite bedrooms. They also utilised the existing roof space which became a separate upstairs lounging area for each en-suite bedroom.

SCENIC KITCHEN RELOCATION

Another stumbling block they came across was the planning permission for the new glass kitchen extension and garage conversion. The kitchen was originally located at the far end of the property in a dark and small space, where there was very little natural light as well as low hanging ceilings which ultimately made the space appear smaller. The vision was to make the kitchen the heart of the home and relocate it towards the other end of the house where it would be positioned in a new vaulted extension. It would be connected to the original part of the house by a glass link which

84

now gives it a spectacular vantage point to take in the wonderful wildlife that roams through the idyllic Cheshire countryside as well views across the River Dane. A charcuterie was also incorporated in the divide space between the two-glass entrance ‘tunnels’ to the main original house which adds a unique yet impressive element to the space.

CLIENT FEEDBACK

“There aren’t many properties that command such an elevated position within their own land which in turn provides a wonderful lifestyle.

It was obvious to me that I needed to do everything I could to capture that view within the design of the home” Simon, the MD of Design by UBER was absolutely thrilled with the finished result. It is not only a very considered layout crammed with clever interior ideas, but it was also designed using his years of knowledge within this industry. This home has now been recognised by the highly prestigious International Property Awards for having ‘The Best Private Residential Interior Design’ in not only Cheshire but it also went on to win for the whole of the UK.

A truly outstanding double award win for Design by UBER on this project. It just highlights that every aspect of this property and the attention to detail hasn’t gone unnoticed by an esteemed industry-judged panel. designbyuber.com

Disconnect to reconnect à Deux this spring at the Cotswold’s chicest bolthole

Hunker down and explore the English countryside this spring at Bergman Design House’s one-bedroom private cottage in Chipping Norton. Bergman Design House, the award-winning studio founded by Marie Soliman and Albin Berglund, is delighted to present The Lund Collection, the Cotswolds’ chicest bolthole. The one-bedroom residence, which opened in Spring 2022, is perfectly positioned between Chipping Norton and Great Tew and offers the ultimate January escape for couples, friends and solo travellers alike.

“There’s nowhere better to reset, relax and set those New Year intentions than in our beautiful British bolthole” said Albin Berglund, the Swedishborn co-founder of Bergman Design House. “The name ‘Lund Collection’ stems from my surname and means ‘green pastures’ in Swedish – which couldn’t be more apt for describing this countryside oasis. Marie and I wanted to channel the Swedish concept of ‘Hygge’ with a warming, nature-inspired colour palette that brings the outside in, soft and tactile textures and of course, an open roaring fire. Here, guests will swap the sounds of city traffic for tweeting birds and tranquil nature and feel the weight of the world lift from their shoulders as they cross the cottage threshold.”

Disconnect to Reconnect

The Lund Collection is the ultimate base for a New Year’s reset, offering a variety of relaxing and mindful activities which have been personally curated by Marie and Albin and can be organised for guests during their stay. Walks in nature, organic farm tours and tastings and bird-watching are just some of the treats available, while co-founders Marie and Albin are always on hand to provide a personal touch. Guests can even opt for a total digital detox, with all tech and Wi-Fi removed from the property ahead of their arrival, and a lockable box in which to safely store their phones during the stay!

“One of my favourite elements of The Lund Collection, which is the first residence to be designed, owned and operated by Bergman Design House, is the personal service we offer, meaning that no two stays are ever the same” explained Marie Soliman. “We provide personal recommendations to all of our guests – whether that’s a special romantic lunch at mine and Albin’s favourite local gastro pub, The Wild Rabbit, a day of retail therapy and indulgence at Bicester Village with your best friend, or soaking up some culture solo at Blenheim Palace, there’s so much to explore around The Lund.”

For those wishing to rustle up their own winter feast and bake a berry crumble or two, Broadway

Market and Daylesford Farm are just moments away and provide the freshest, organic produce from local farmers. Ramblers in search of the most scenic spots to observe frost-covered forests and the season’s first snowdrops will be in heaven, with a variety of rewarding walking routes surrounding the cottage, including the nearby grounds of the beautiful Sudeley Castle and gardens, a favourite of Albin and Marie.

The Lund Collection is exquisitely decorated by the husband-and-wife design duo and features a carefully-curated collection of original artwork and vintage treasures alongside new bespoke furniture from the studio’s Black Berg Collection.

From 17th century Chinese ceramics and an 18th century marriage armoire turned showstopping drinks cabinet to a modern and luxurious deep-soaking bathtub, design lovers will marvel at the wonders on display.

A veritable treasure trove of original artwork, the cottage features works from artists including Amir Fallah, Damien Elwes, Christabel Forbes, Cece Philips and John Swannel, alongside valuable antiques sourced from around the world.

Design Details

Inspired by the beauty of the Cotswolds, the property features a colour palette that reflects all four seasons, from the vibrant green of Summer to the russetoranges of Autumn. In combination with the work of some of the most distinguished furniture and textile artisans in the UK, including Timothy Oulton,

Upholstory, Robert Kime, Tori Murphy and de Le Cuona, the result is nothing short of spectacular.

The Lund Collection is Bergman Design House’s foray into a new line of luxury individual accommodations in the UK, providing the utmost privacy while offering the ultimate guest experience. Featuring a fully stocked bar, hand-curated welcome hamper and a state-of-the-art Swedish Moccamaster coffee machine, guests will arrive, immediately relax and feel at home.

Creating and designing the property has been a passion project for Marie and Albin, and they hope it will be a sanctuary for guests seeking zen and an escape in the countryside. “We fell in love with this cottage and the absolutely stunning countryside. We are so thrilled to share it with our guests. It is intended to be a sanctuary for all who visit - we want our guests to come here and truly switch off, connect with nature and feel at home,” said Marie. thelundcollection.com
