It’s certainly a celebration for the Southern Alberta Round Up Group, which they will, but within their own limits of humility. This certainly positions the “Round Up” as one of the longest running consecutive fall Simmental sales ever! For the 25th Annual Sale, we introduced the “Round Up Gals” whom were touted and proved to be an elite end of the Group’s elegant female division to compliment the very successful bull sale included. For the 30th Annual Sale, this description still defines them perfectly! As mentioned, the “Round Up” Bull Sale has become an excellent event for both the registered and commercial breeder alike to source their next herdsire(s). Highly screened Black, Red and Fleckvieh Simmental Bulls have built a solid reputation within the industry backed by people of great character with realistic viewpoints and goal. 30 Years of History in the Making.... Southern Alberta Round Up We would like to present a Brief History and the evolution of the (Calgary) Southern Alberta Simmental Round Up Group Sale. December 9, 1994 the Calgary Simmental Round Up group had their initial Sale at the Calgary Exhibition Grounds. Initial consignors included Berjian Enterprises (Nick Berjian); Vernon Properties; JB Livestock; Parkhill Ranches; Sim-Roc Simmentals and Okofleck Simmentals (Ted Shacklady and Brian Miller). The Round Up Sale has continued for 30 years serving producers primarily in Western Canada with high quality Fleckvieh (Full and 100%) Simmental breeding bulls. The efficiency and adaptability of this genetic pool has greatly enhanced the performance of the Western Canada beef herds. In 1997 Transcon Livestock Corp, owned and managed by Rodney James became our sales management and has continued (now managed by Jay Good) to provide an excellent service to our sale group. They have greatly assisted us in striving to serve our customers with respect, honesty and integrity. Although the sale site moved from the Calgary Exhibition Grounds to Highwood livestock Auction and eventually to Auctioneers Inc. at Stavely we have strived to provide a convenient service to the cattle community of Southern Alberta and a venue for additional Simmental breeders to join us. Examples include Three Point Livestock, WHR Simmentals and Scott Land and Cattle. Outback Cattle Co. is dispersing this fall. MAVV Farms started his own sale in 2022. The Calgary Simmental Round Up Group sale became the Southern Alberta Simmental Round Up Group sale for our 16th Annual Sale in December 2009. Although our sale was known as a source for high quality efficient and effective producing bulls we have also marketed quality females to meet the needs of our customers. Our sale moved to Foothills Auctioneers Inc for the 22nd Annual Southern Alberta Simmental Round Up Group sale on December 15, 2015. Our 25th Annual Southern Alberta Simmental Round Up Group sale provided us with the opportunity to feature the Round Up Gals in 2018. This division has continued for the 30th Annual sale on December 12, 2023. There will be 18 high quality Fleckvieh females and 24 quality meat producing Fleckvieh and 7 strong meaty Black and Red Simmental bulls for the beef cattle producers. All the consignors to the Southern Alberta Simmental Round Up Group Sale would like to thank all our customers who have supported our programs and purchased our cattle over the last 30 years. Our Fleckvieh offering has been influenced by the BEL tattoo of Berjian Enterprises. The Fleckvieh genetics have influenced the development of Western Canadian beef herds. Attention to quality and performance genetics has enabled Okofleck to provide a source of quality bulls for our beef producing customers for 30 years.

With my brother Jeff dispersing his portion of the herd by private treaty to Madge Simmentals this past September, it has certainly been a year of change for our family. For the past 23 years, Jeff has been a great partner in our family’s cow herd and I look back at his involvement with many fond memories and an immense sense of gratitude. We will continue to work together closely on our family farm, just in different ways.

Specific to the bred females we have on offer for your consideration, long-established cow families continue to be the foundation we build from. Ease of management and the polled gene are qualities we remain diligent to incorporate. We hope our offering of 8 bred females, including the final 5 from Jeff ’s herd, bring a little something for everyone. 6 of our 8 sale heifers are polled and we trust they will develop into cows who will pull their own weight and add some genetic diversity in their new breeding programs. The sale heifers are prepared in a 20-acre pasture where they get the best hay we have and about 5 to 6 lbs. per day of ration. We want these heifers to have some bloom by December while still protecting their reproductive soundness to help ensure their best days are still ahead. The Round-Up Sale continues to be an event that believes in hospitality and camaraderie. This is topped off with a great pre-sale meal serving some of the best prime rib you’ll find. Polled. 100% Fleckvieh Leading off our section of the “Round-Up Gals” is perhaps the favorite from our 2022 heifer calf crop, Fortuna’s Row is a smooth polled Alamo daughter. She has a beautiful, broody skull, comes with the paint color and pigmentation desired by many, boasts easy fleshing characteristics on a sound skeletal structure and is dropping a perfect udder. With a horned sire and horned maternal grand sire, genetically, she brings a valuable outcross to the polled gene pool. Her pedigree is further strengthened with our consistent and long-lived “Freya” line of females anchoring her pedigree. Here is a future donor candidate we would truly prefer to be keeping at home. 100% Fleckvieh. In terms of sheer power and presence, here is a real standout. If I could draw an outline of the type of female we strive to produce, Friedel would mirror a close reflection. MAVV Alamo 84G did an excellent job while at work in our pastures and so did DFM Ranchland 37A, her maternal grand sire. At one time we had over 20 Ranchland daughters at work in our pastures and they were easy for pasture tourists to pick out. Another member of the Fashionista cow family, longevity and some extra style become part of the genetic equation and this heifer is heavy in calf to Active Winsome. Polled. 100% Fleckvieh It’s no secret that incorporating the polled gene continues to be part of our breeding mission and this means sampling different polled sires to diversify our gene pool. Belle Fleur is sired by ROD Shamrock 10G, a homozygous polled sire born and bred in “La belle province.” Her dam, Keato Brooklyn 2B, is now the second oldest cow in our herd and much admired for her consistent production which includes being the dam of the lead off lot in last year’s sale selling to DJ Farms in Ontario. We appreciate this female for her moderate frame, pigmentation, heavy hair coat, and the promise of a near perfect udder with fully pigmented teats. The icing on the cake is service to the relatively exclusive, homozygous polled and calving ease-based sire FSS Polled Hendrix; a sire who has already put a few chapters in his book north and south of the border.

Homozygous Polled. 100% Fleckvieh. Here is another female we consider a highlight among our sale offering. Amelia is homozygous polled and brings forward a fresh genetic combination to the polled gene pool through JNR Cashmere and FSS Maximus. Cashmere has done a stand-up job for the good folks at Lone Stone Farms and Maximus brings great numbers to the table with his influence becoming even more prevalent as his sons and grandsons see continued use. Amelia is also a maternal sister to JB CDN Stag’s Leap 2064, a former herd sire for us now roaming the pastures of eastern Alberta at Madge Simmentals. With her homozygous polled head, excellent hair coat and pear-shape, Amelia has the potential to become a strong cornerstone for the development of some new and exciting polled bloodlines. Simmental Bulls
On behalf of Scott Land & Cattle and JLD Simmentals we welcome you to the 2023 Southern Alberta Round Up Sale.
Our operation is located just east of Arrowwood Alberta and consists of 150 commercial cows and 35 purebred Simmental cows as well as 2200 acres of crop land. Through AI and Embryo transfer work we are able to utilize some of the best genetics in the industry. Our bull calves graze in the buffalo hills grassland area which is a great place to watch them develop and turn into great herdsires. The bulls calves are raised along side their dams without creep until late august where they then go onto a high oat and high roughage ration to ensure these bulls grow and develop to their maximum potential and will continue to perform for years to come. TERMS - The terms of the sale are cash, cheque, e-transfer, or wire and are due at the time of sale, unless other arrangements have been made between buyer and seller prior to the sale. Transcon reserves the right to charge interest at a rate of 2.5% per month on overdue accounts. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. Transcon Livestock Corp. reserves the right to require a certified cheque as settlement before releasing any sale cattle. Should any purchaser fail to settle for their purchase Transcon Livestock Corp. reserves full power to resell the animal to the best advantage either publicly or privately, without further notice.Any loss arising from such resale together with keep and all other expenses shall be payable by the defaulter.Transcon Livestock Corp and/or the Auctioneer shall have the right to refuse bids from anyone who has a previous record of default in payment or who has not made proper credit clearance prior to the sale with the owner or Sale Managers. BID - No private sales will be allowed except as otherwise provided for in the terms and conditions. No by-bidding will be permitted. SALES TAXES – Applicable sales taxes will be charged on semen, embryos, and trucking fees (if listed), respective to the home province of the buyer, not the seller.
