Mike Sorensen ~ Sales Cell: 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings, All I can say is, we all need to be praying for rain. I went to my playpen (our acreage) this evening and decided to check the electric fence with my handy dandy little fence checker, and the ground was so hard I couldn’t get the little metal rod stuck in the ground. One other thing, I can tell you, my weeds are growing. Can anybody tell me why weeds don’t need water to grow and good grass and corn do? I had a dining experience the other night that just has to be documented. I was in Grand Island, Nebraska for the National Junior Charolais Show and just had to go to Uncle Ed’s Steak House. I have known Uncle Ed Sabatka for years. He is a great chef and master of feed rations and the cattle business in general. A very nice young lady, and my waitress for the evening, asked me what she could help me with. I asked her if she would let Uncle Ed know that an old, worn out cowboy/roadie, Mike Sorensen, was here and he would like to know what the best steak in the house was. I knew what his best steak would be

for me, anyway, a bone-in ribeye. He was out in a flash, and he said you know you will order the ribeye, you always do. Ed and I discussed just about everything from feeding cattle, to marketing cattle, and aging of beef. This guy is one smart dude when it comes to steaks. Ed is a perfectionist when it comes to selecting steaks for his steakhouse. They have to be properly aged (a story in itself). He prides himself in serving the Premium Reserve Angus Beef that he selects himself. Ed can season a steak to perfection, also. Words really can’t describe how good this steak was, plus you add that sweet potato and this old fat man was in pig heaven. Thanks Ed for the education, and the great food. To prove that I am not to far off, Ed was named 2009 Nebraska Beef Backer Restaurant of the Year and also 2009 National Independent Restaurant of the Year, and a host of other awards. To all you exhibitors heading to your county and state fairs good luck. Have a great time! Travel safe. PLEASE keep our service men and women in your thoughts and prayers!!!

SMART SENSATION the

The Smart Series, Made in the USA!

Brush™

by Sullivan’s

The Smart Sensation like no other. The advantage of the Smart Sensation is how it amplifies the volume of the hair as it lifts up from the hide without causing curls, kinks or matting that are often |associated with rice root or massage brushes. With the 129 precisely placed ball-tipped teeth, you can actually see the Smart Sensation brush create hair separation off the skin allowing air to flow deep into the hair base for added hair stimulation and hair growth. Healthy for hide and hair, the Smart Sensation gently massages the hide to stimulate blood flow that releases the natural oils from the skin to coat the hair and promote healthy hair growth. The Smart Sensation is similar to human vent hair brushes but has been designed with the proper size for show cattle and a more comfortable handle application. Cattle love the feel of the stimulating Smart Sensation!

Patent pending.

Commentary

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things

by Evan Rayl

Personally, I hope the weather changes and I look foolish for writing about what I have in the first four paragraphs of this column, but the weather we have had and the forecast for the next 10 days is causing me to go ahead. Frankly, I am hoping I am totally wrong. This has been a strange year. After a winter that almost wasn’t. February was the only month that even acted like winter and it seemed more like November. Then, the earliest spring in history with some corn planted in mid-March in a county just south of us. I’d like to find where some of it is and take a good look at it. Is it still way ahead? If it is, its almost to late for a rain to help it right now. Then it quit raining and our lawn turned brown and cracks in the ground showed up for a few weeks, followed by too much rain (some places 5 or 6 inches) that washed the ground terrible just after most of the corn was planted. It was followed by a few small rains, then it quit raining again and our lawn is brown again and the cracks in the ground are back. Now, every discussion starts with how hot it is with a bunch of 100 degree days strung together, some with humidity almost as high. Weathermen say the first 100 degree day this year is the first since 2006. I pray this discussion brings rain. When you discover that you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount. Symptoms of heat stress in cattle include slobbering, increased respiration rate, and an elevated head. I know some people have already lost some fat cattle with the heat, but if more extreme heat comes, make sure cattle have water and shade as close together as possible. Open doors so a breeze can come through if they are in a building. Feed cattle late in the day and/or make sure they can be in pasture at night. If sprinklers are used to mitigate heat, droplets should be large enough to soak the hide. Spraying a fine mist over cattle can serve to increase humidity and worsen the problem. If you want children to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders. - Abigail Van Buren With the shortage of moisture, pastures have quit growing so cattle will run out of feed. The longer cattle are short of feed, the lower their condition score will get. Perhaps, one should be thinking of culling bottom end cows or weaning calves early. Milk is an expensive way to feed calves. It will take less feed if cows and their calves are fed separately. My Purina Fieldman, Kevin Sothman, says he has been told by his brother who runs a feed store in Texas that, “ last year, most cow herd owners in Texas held onto their cows too long during the drought to the point where no one really wanted them.” he also said, “Northern buyers would have to stop along the way to feed, water, and rest the cows, otherwise they would die on the trip north.” Given the situation we are in this year, one needs to make a drought plan for their cows and review it every week it is still dry. If one hangs on too long, you will have almost nothing to sell. When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardy stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years. - Mark Twain When we have a shortage of water, cows need more to drink. With hot, humid weather they will drink as much as 12 percent of their body weight, which means a 1200 pound cow will require 216 pounds of water per day. This would amount to 27 gallons per day at a time when the water level in your ponds or wells is down. It is hard to realize two cows will split a 55 gallon barrel of water between them every day in hot summer weather. No wonder wells and ponds go dry.

You have a lifetime to work, but your children are only young once. Mega-giant farm supplier, Monsanto reported a 35 percent higher profit in its fiscal third quarter. The company also maintained its fullyear earnings forecast after boosting it in May. Monsanto earned $937 million, or $1.74 per share in the quarter ended in May. Revenue rose 17 percent to $4.22 billion. Sales of all seeds and traits rose, except vegetables seeds. Monsanto confirmed its profit forecast of $3.65 to $3.70 per share for the fiscal year. The company expects adjusted earnings to grow up to 25 percent for the fiscal year ending in August. Parents often talk about the younger generation as if they didn’t have anything to do with it. A new study provides evidence that eating beef everyday as part of a heart-healthy diet can reduce cholesterol levels. The “Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet” study, in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that diets including lean beef every day are as effective in lowering total and LDL “bad” cholesterol as the “gold standard” of heart-healthy diets. Funded by the Beef Checkoff and conducted at Pennsylvania State University the study evaluated adults with moderately elevated cholesterol levels, measuring the impact of diets including varying amounts of lean beef on total LDL cholesterol levels. Study participants experienced a 10 percent decrease in LDL cholesterol from the start of the study, while consuming diets containing either 4.0 or 5.4 ounces of lean beef daily. By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he’s wrong. - Charles Wadsworth The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) issued a statement in response to the Humane Society of the U. S.’s plans to file lawsuits against pork producers in three states over ammonia emissions that it contends should be reported to state and local emergency response agencies. “The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is still evaluating air emissions data gathered from livestock and poultry operations to develop a better understanding of emission rates, which vary considerably from farm to farm. This will allow the agency to better apply environmental laws to these complex biological systems,” NPPC said. “It is important to point out that HSUS is not alleging environmental harm but rather paperwork violations of EPA’s emissions reporting rule. Additionally it is worth noting that when the reporting rule went into effect in 2009 there was widespread confusion about it.” NPPC went on to call HSUS’s announcement a “scare tactic” aimed at undermining NPPC’s opposition to HSUS backed proposed legislation. The statement concluded, “In addition to not telling the truth about how hog farmers raise and care for their animals, HSUS is now lying about hog farmers‘ stewardship of the environment, which is exemplary. We also wonder why a so-called animal welfare group is sticking its nose in environmental issues.” Few things are more satisfying than seeing your own children raise teenagers of their own. Sizzler USA Franchise Inc. can recover damages from Cargill’s Excel Corp in the case of a little girl who died 12 years ago from E. Coli contamination after eating at a Milwaukee area restaurant, Wisconsin’s Supreme Court has ruled. The court upheld an appeals court’s decision in the case involving about 140 people who were sickened after eating food contaminated by E. Coli pathogens at two Sizzler Steak House restaurants in the Milwaukee area in the summer of 2000. Threeyear-old Brianna Kriefall died. Excel processed and distributed the contaminated meat that was the source of the E. Coli pathogens. The company’s role was confirmed by tests of sealed packages of its tri-tip beef that were shipped to Sizzler restaurants. “The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling in this 12 year old case is final and we must respect it.” Mike Martin, spokesman for Excel parent Cargill Inc., said. “All of the consumers who made claims were compensated over the past 12 years.” He said the company is committed to ensuring a safe food supply and uses advanced technologies throughout its plants. “Producing the safest foods possible is absolutely critical to the ongoing success of Cargill’s business,” Martin said. n

August 2012

I attended a cattle show recently. I sat back, watched and listened, and later came upon a scary revelation. I visited with a young girl that had a fair amount of success during her 4-H years. She revealed to me that when it came to fitting her 4-H calves, she had never been allowed to touch them. She had gone through the 4-H program, showed numerous calves throughout the years, and what had she learned? This made me think back about how I learned to fit when I was in 4-H. At our local show we had a grooming class that consisted of three age groups. We would put our blocking chutes in the show ring and then fit our calves in front of the judge. We were allowed 20 minutes to fit our animal. The judge would watch, evaluate each member, and ask questions to find out if the member had any idea why they did what they were doing, or if it was just what their parent or professional fitter had told them to do. The one that won would then advance on to compete at the next level (like the State Fair). This was the most educational thing that taught me how to fit, and I took pride in knowing that it was me, by myself, that had fit my calf! I would like to encourage each county to incorporate a class like this into your 4-H program! I really enjoyed it and I’m sure they will, too. If you have any further questions, call me. Tip to Remember: Be working the leg hair and training it while you are rinsing your cattle. This will make a huge difference in how well your legs will glue up when you get to the shows. Also spend time at home setting your animal up every time you are working with it. This will prove to be extremely beneficial when you are in the show ring and want to lead it into the setup position, so it is ready for the judge to look. If you have any questions feel free to call, Chuck McCullough 641-344-5566 Karen McCullough 641-344-5548 God Bless and have fun at the FAIRS!

Mark was born in Lafayette, Indiana on September 8, 1957, to Robert and June Pearson. Mark graduated from Naperville Central High School in Naperville, Illinois in 1975 and then continued his education at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, where he graduated in 1979. He majored in journalism and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Mark met his wife, Eden, at the University of Arizona in 1976 and they married in Phoenix in 1978. ey moved to Des Moines where Mark went to work in the farm department at WHO Radio. In 1980, Mark received the most coveted award in agricultural broadcasting, the DeKalb Oscar. He also worked as the Markets Editor for Successful Farming magazine and as Iowa's Assistant Secretary of Agriculture. In 1985, Mark was named Director of Agricultural Programming for Minnesota Public Radio's commercial farm network, a group of fifty stations in Minnesota and Iowa carrying farm markets and news. In 1986, Mark entered the United States Naval Reserves as a Military Intelligence Officer. He eventually attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In 1988, Mark returned to Iowa where he was employed by Southwestern Community College in Creston as the Director of Agricultural Planning and Development. is program was dedicated to creating income opportunities for southwest Iowa farmers. In addition to his work at SWCC, Mark enjoyed raising hogs at his farm in ayer. Beginning in 1991, Mark took the reins of Iowa Public Television's Market to Market program. Mark also hosted periodic specials on economic development, rural development, and farm policy for IPTV, as well as the station's annual coverage of the Iowa State Fair. In June of 1993, Mark opened an Edwards Jones office in Winterset, Iowa. Soon after, he returned to WHO Radio as the host of the daily noon farm program, the Big Show, which he broadcast from the basement of his Jones office. Mark and his family moved to a farm in East Peru, Iowa in 1995, where he built a diversified grain and livestock operation. roughout the years, Mark has been a popular speaker at thousands of farm, business, and financial meetings across the country. Mark had an uncommon ability to bridge the gap between rural and urban Americans. With his radio show, television show, brokerage office, and speaking career, Mark was truly a Renaissance man. He served the Winterset community as: chairman of the Madison County Covered Bridge Festival, creator of the Winterset Parks and Recreation swim team, Little League and soccer coach, member of American Legion Green Rogers Post 184, Lions, Rotary, Madison County Cattlemen, Madison County Pork Producers, and confirmation guide at the Winterset Presbyterian Church and Plymouth Congregational Church. However, above all else, Mark was a son, a husband, and a father, in addition to the radio and television personality beloved by Iowans. His family was the most important thing in his life and they were foremost in his heart. He cherished the accomplishments of his wife and children. Survivors include his wife Eden, his son Mike and daughter-in-law Heidi (Ramaeker), his daughters Katie, Betsy, and Ellie; his father Robert Pearson of Champaign, Illinois; father-in-law Tom Fridena of Scottsdale, Arizona; his sisters Kay (Dave) Haughey and Sarah (David) Garcia, and two nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, June Pearson, and his mother-in-law, Pat Fridena.

Muir Obituary :Layout 1 7/19/12 8:16 AM Page 1

Dwight “DoDo” Muir, husband, dad, granddad and friend to everyone that he approached. A man with a new joke every time you spoke to him and most could be used in a Sunday sermon. He was a man that appreciated all the little things in life and had a passion for the cattle and farming industries. Dwight was always in his height of glory when he could help with the family business, Muir Embroidery. He loved talking to people. A man that loved his wife, kids, grandkids and everybody else’s kids and knew most of them by name. Everyone that knew him will miss him, and especially the Livestock Plus Family. Dwight passed from this life doing what he loved working on the farm. I am sure “Suzie” is waiting for him with open arms.

Caldwell~Willoughby

“Join or Die” By Toby Muller Once in a while, I’ll call up my old man when I’m getting ready to make an important decision, for some advice, or at the very least, some thought-provoking conversation. For those of you that know my dad, you won’t be surprised to hear that sometimes he will turn this into a major debate. In fact, sometimes he can take the most innocent question or statement and argue both sides until he’s blue in the face. This is fine, as a man, his job is to fix the problem, give sound advice, or steer me down the right path even if I didn’t think I needed direction. In several of our latest “super-deep” conversations he’s ended with: Oh hell, I don’t know, you won’t accomplish anything if you listen to me, I’m gettin ”old and scary.” Now, I recently had a birthday, and I’ve decided that somewhere around 37 to 38 must be where this “scary” part starts to kick in. Just in the last year, I’ve added a direct generator hookup to the house, stashed some cash for emergencies, started locking the doors at night, and got my concealed weapons permit. I’ve also paid a lot closer attention to politics than my younger self ever could have imagined. A lot of this has been to keep close tabs on the embryo transfer and ultrasound wrestling match here in Iowa. The outcome of this issue has direct repercussions for me and the future of my business. Although the journey has been somewhat stressful and even painful, the silver lining has been all the experience I’ve gained learning what issues are affecting the cattle industry. This last month I attended the Iowa Cattlemen’s summer policy

meeting and participated in small group discussion that talked about what ICA’s policy should be on a lot of different topics. Some of the more pertinent topics mentions were: fuel tax implications, fence laws, ethanol policy, EPA issues, death tax, ET/ ultrasound issue, and dealing with animal rights groups attack on agriculture. The purpose of the meeting was to decide which issues should be the highest priority to the membership. Now, for the scary part. There were less than forty people attending the meeting and none of them were younger than me. I’m not sure what part of that statement scares me worse. We are all so busy, it seems like we overlook the big picture. If we don’t put forth the effort to protect the things that are important to us and our livelihood, who will? Power comes in numbers and our commodity groups are our only effective lobby groups. We, without a doubt, live in the best country in the world and a lot of that is due to the fact that our ancestors were willing to go to great lengths to gain freedom. The other reason it’s the best is because we haven’t had a lot of time to screw it up. We are still a fairly new country and as each generation gets a little more relaxed and maybe even a little lazier we begin to expect certain things. It’s a fact, most of our farm kids aren’t staying on the farm, and when their kids grow up, where do you think their priorities will be? It won’t be with food until we’ve regulated ourselves into 12$ hamburger or $10 pork. So I think that leads us to a famous quote that still holds true today “Join or die.” We have to figure out how to not only unite as commodity groups, but more importantly as one big agricultural unit. Uncertain times are ahead and sometimes it pays to be scary and prepare for the worst. - Toby
