It’s Not the End ... It’s the Beginning. We’re not getting out of this business we love. Not at all. Rather, we’re changing our focus from production to promotion and marketing of these same cattle. Increased demands of family plus time and travel in our other show cattle-related businesses have necessitated this change of course. Cows like these deserve more attention than our current schedule allows so we’re selling them all in order to allow others to maximize their potential. We’re turning them loose but we’re looking forward to working with their new owners and marketing their progeny through The Chosen Few and our other, proven channels. PRODUCTS WE BELIEVE IN
They work heads and tails above the competition. As you all know we work with some great companies on developing products that will improve the way we fit, clip, and show cattle. So we thought that we would share with everyone what we feel are superior products. This month’s focus is on Livestock Plus, Inc. magazine. Livestock Plus, Inc. is owned and operated by the Sorensen family from Greenfeild, IA. They work hard to deliver the best magazine that covers all aspects of the livestock industry from coast

to coast. Whether you’re a purebred rancher, a club calf producer, an exhibitor, a hog, chicken or sheep farmer, equipment dealer, service provider, big or small business, Livestock Plus Inc. will connect you to the most influential and active industry members. It will bring you the latest news, sales, and crucial directory information. Add to that, they have the largest FREE and REQUESTED subscription direct mail circulation in the industry. Livestock Plus Inc. is the fastest way to get noticed. In 2004 Chuck and I were asked to manage a bred heifer sale for Charlie Swaim, in Bloomfeild, IA. We started to research our options of what we were going to do for a catalog. Our criteria for our campaign was that we wanted a magazine that generated the biggest and best mailing list, for a catalog and advertising. We were looking for “the most bang for the buck” as it were. As we did our research, we learned that Livestock Plus is circulated to 15,000 people across the United States, while others go to only a third as many people. The fact that it is a free subscription to everyone who requests it, made us realize that it was definitely the one we wanted to work with. Not only was it going to more people, but those people are choosing to subscribe and read this magazine. The clear choice was Livestock Plus Inc. When preparing the catalog, they were easy to work with and the design was professional, and budget friendly. Through this experience, we formed a close friendship with Mike and his daughter Heidi. It was refreshing to work with real people, that uphold the same standards as we do, and love the livestock industry as much as we do. We began to write the Cattle Chat article in every issue since 2007. They have given us the opportunity, to pass on our knowledge, to others through Cattle Chat and also by advertising the McCullough Fitting Clinics each month. We are so thankful to work with the Sorensen family, and hope that you, too, will see the advantage of working with the Livestock Plus Inc. for all your advertising needs.

Commentary
Nebraska Pipeline Fight Continues by Evan Rayl
Back in 2005, the TransCanada Corp. proposed building the Keystone Pipeline from the Athabasca Oil Sands in northeastern Alberta, Canada to refineries in Illinois and Oklahoma, and further to the U.S. gulf Coast. In September of 2007, the National Energy Board of Canada approved the construction of the Canadian section of the pipeline, including converting a portion of TransCanada’s Canadian Mainline gas pipeline to crude oil pipeline. In March of 2008, the U.S. Department of State issued a Presidential Permit authoring the construction. maintenance and operation of facilities at the U.S and Canada border. It took TransCanada more than two years to acquire all the necessary state and federal permits for the pipeline. Construction took another two years and the pipeline became operational in June 2010. This project went from northeastern Alberta down to an existing unused pipeline that went east to a point just southwest of Winnipeg, then mostly straight south across the Dakota’s and Nebraska to Steele City, Nebraska. Then the Keystone XL extension was proposed in 2008. The application was filed in the beginning of 2009 and the National Energy Board of Canada started hearings in September 2009. It was approved by the National Energy Board in March of 2010. The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission granted a permit in February of 2010. At this point the project started to run into problems because the second project did not follow the route of the first project The second project followed the first down to the existing pipeline that went east, but at the western end of the existing eastern pipeline, it went on a southeastern route down to Baker, Montana and just by the southwest corner of North Dakota and on approximately the same southeastern route all the way to Steele City, Nebraska. At this point one pipeline continues on to the refineries in Wood River and Patoka, Illinois. The second to a refinery in Cushing, Oklahoma, with plans to extend the line on to Port Arthur and Houston, Texas. Problem with the second route is two fold: 1) TransCanada plans to use a lighter gauge pipe for the second pipeline and 2) the diagonal route goes right over the middle of the Ogallala Aquifer. The public does not know why the plan is to use lighter pipe for the second pipeline. But at the same time, most residents of Nebraska agree that they do not want a pipeline going thru their state above the Ogallala Aquifer. The Ogallala Aquifer is a vast yet shallow underground water table aquifer located beneath the Great Plains, including the Sand Hills. While the Aquifer is in parts of eight states, about half of it is in Nebraska. It is under approximately 90 percent of the state. Most of the area where there is no aquifer is along the Missouri River route in the northeast part of the state and a triangular area in the southeast corner of Nebraska. 27 percent of the irrigated land in the United States overlies this aquifer system, which yields about 30 percent of the nation’s ground water used for irrigation. In addition, the aquifer system provides drinking water to 82 percent of the people who live within the aquifer boundary. In regard to the two problems listed in the previous paragraph, it is possible but not likely the steel for the second pipeline is higher qual-

ity steel and thus stronger which would mean it would be less likely to fail. But if the steel is stronger, what about the welds between sections? How can the welds be better if the pipe is thinner? The pipeline sections are 36 inches inside diameter and 100 feet long. The Keystone pipeline is 2,147 miles long. It can carry up to 590,000 barrels per day. It cost $5 billion dollars. The Keystone XL would be 1,980 miles long (167 miles shorter). It would carry up to 510,000 barrels per day. It is projected to cost $7 billion. Total capacity of the two pipelines would be 1.1 million barrels per day. If both were completed they would provide 5 percent of current U.S. petroleum consumption needs and represent 9 percent of U.S. petroleum imports. Looking at the diagonal route of the pipeline there are only two possible changes that would make Nebraska residents happy. One would be for Keystone XL pipeline to follow the route of the first Keystone pipeline, in other words, “go around.” Going around would mean 167 miles more pipeline with more pumping equipment and operating expense. The second possibility would be to place a 42 inch or 48 inch pipe outside the 36 inch pipeline, in other words, give the the pipeline a “double hull” to protect it from a spill. This is the common method to prevent leaks in sea going vessels. To place a second pipe over the first would also be expensive. Protecting the aquifer would require approximately 300 miles (285 miles in Nebraska and 15 miles in South Dakota) of double piping to cover the distance that the pipeline goes over the Ogallala Aquifer. In addition, there would need to be a method to check for leaks from the inner pipeline into the outer one every so often. I doubt if the TransCanada Corp. would like either of these plans. But on the other hand, the Ogallala Aquifer is an extremely valuable and pristine water source. It isn’t hard to figure what Nebraska would be like without the Aquifer, its production would be about the same as South Dakota. Lets do a quick comparison: South Dakota raises 43.8% as much corn as Nebraska, 60% as much soybeans, 91% as many cows and calves, and feeds 26% as many cattle. This does a good job telling what the Aquifer does for Nebraska. It obviously adds billions of dollars to Nebraska’s total production. See Nebraska Governor Heineman’s comments later in this editorial. While pipeline executives say the their pipeline is perfectly safe, Nebraska's are quick to point the Exxon oil spill on July 4th, 2011 in the Yellowstone River near Laurel, Montana. One thousand barrels leaked before pressure was shut off and the leak contained. The Yellowstone River is the U.S.A.s longest unrestricted river at 692 miles. It drains into the Missouri River just above Lake Sakakawea. Above Billings the river flows thru Yellowstone Park feeding and draining Yellowstone Lake and goes over both Upper and Lower Yellowstone Falls. The Yellowstone is one of the best fly-fishing rivers in the West. Exxon has a refinery nearby in Billings. Because the decision to allow or not to allow the pipeline involves a foreign country, Canada, President Obama is supposed to make the decision on the pipeline. He plans to push the decision off on to the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He apparently doesn’t want to make the decision himself because he is running for President. Word is the President might put off the decision until after the Presidential Election next year. Nebraska State Senators have submitting a bills to regulate oil pipelines and the legislature has recently been in special session. Governor Heinemann has sent a letter to the President and the Secretary of State urging they deny the federal permit. He said, “Cash receipts from farm products contribute over $17 billion to Nebraska’s economy annually. I am concerned that the proposed pipeline will have potentially detrimental effects on this valuable natural resource and Nebraska’s economy.” Opponents point out, “TransCanada has bullied landowners with eminent-domain threats to obtain right-of-way agreements”. Still others mention the existing TransCanada pipeline has had 14 leaks in only its first year of operation. They also say there would only be 40 permanent jobs in Nebraska. I personally think TransCanada should go with one of the two options I suggested, even though either of them would cost more to construct. The longer this debate goes on, the more upset parties will be along the pipeline and the more it will cost to build. There is nothing wrong with “DOING ONE OF THE TWO OPTIONS,” I suggrested. n

Greetings, In my infamous wisdom, I neglected to announce my newest grandchild in the last issue. Independence June Sorensen was born October 1, 2011. Proud parents are my son, Ray “Bubba”, and daughter-in-law, Maria Sorensen. Indie had a rough start but she's going strong now! We are very proud to have her in the Sorensen family. Welcome, Indie!! It's hard to believe that it is the end of the year. anksgiving is just days away as I write this, and Christmas is just around the corner, where did 2011 go? It’s been a great year here at Livestock Plus, and we want to express our appreciation for your friendship and business. I have a short, but awesome, food report for the month. As I traveled east the other day, hungry enough to eat the steering wheel, I called my old buddy, Mike Meyers, in Williamsburg, Iowa. I was attempting to get a “to go” meal. My request was a small portion of cubed steak, seasoned and deep fat fried with a few bacon-wrapped shrimp. Meyers knows no such thing as “small” or “few.” I’m guessing that 16 oz. would summarize the amount of steak, and I never counted, but I’m guessing 10-12 bacon wrapped shrimp. Almost enough to founder a normal person. I’m also sure this would be classified a “heart attack to-go,” but it was great. I just have to live on the edge. Great job Mike! I hope I can sit and visit next time through. Next, on the way to the next sale, I had the pleasure of stopping at another one of my top-end food stores, Tappa’s Steak House in Davenport, Iowa. No use breaking my traditional order at Tappa’s. I had an 8 oz. fillet with drowned shrimp in butter garlic sauce, and topped it off with a loaded sweet potato with brown sugar, butter and cinnamon. is is a weight watcher special - that is watching the weight go on! Great job Cliff and Jan, had a blast! e Sorensen Family, along with the Livestock Plus crew, would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Please keep our service folks in your thoughts and prayers over the holiday season. Safe Travels!!!!

Well, in 2011 we have made a few changes to Livestock Plus and I hope y’all were pleased. I am very blessed that I get to talk to the people that I truly enjoy and call it “work.” I know I speak for all of us at Livestock Plus when I say that we enjoy and cherish the friendships that we make and appreciate your continued business! My kids and I have been trying something new this month at bedtime. Tucker informed me that we really haven’t been reading the Bible enough and Taylor just isn’t understanding God. So we got the children’s Bible out and every night after we are done reading we each say something for which we are thankful. e first night we did this Tucker and I both said we were thankful for family and our pets, etc. en we looked at Taylor and asked her what she was thankful for and she responds without hesitation, “Yaya.” (Her Aunt Maria taught her that Yaya means Grandma in Greek.) Tucker looked at me and says, “Really?? Yaya,..that’s it? What about us?” Oh well, we all went to bed and the next night Tucker was really playing it up and saying all the things he was thankful for and when it came to Taylor again she says, “Yaya and Papa.” Tucker is just irritated now and, boy, can she tell it! So now every night she’ll add another person but it is never Tucker or myself. She just grins! Not sure where that awnry streak comes from but I’m leaning toward my dad (aka Papa). Merry Christmas to all and I look forward to working with you in 2012! Hope you all have a very blessed holiday season! Please remember to take a moment to remember our military past and present. A very dear friend of mine posted this recently and it hit home for me… Life is God’s gift to you. e way you live your life is your gift to God. Make it a fantastic one! ~Leo Buscaglia

Happy holidays from Southwest Nebraska! 2011 was a busy and exciting year for us! We added a new member to our little family in March – a Saint Bernard puppy named “Walt” - he isn’t so much a “puppy” anymore, but he still likes to think he’s a lap dog! We got married August 6th, in Imperial, Neb. So far, we still can’t agree on “good cattle,” - I like clubbies and he likes commercial - but married life is treating us well! As Christmas and New Year’s approach, we wish you safe travels and remind you to enjoy time together with your friends and family. I really enjoyed and appreciated working with you all throughout the last year. Between ads, fliers and sale catalogs, I was able to add some great design pieces to my portfolio! I look forward to helping your meet your marketing and advertising goals in 2012! Hope you all have a great spring calving season!

Greetings! I’d like to take this time to thank all the people that let us work with them on their events. It is very seldom in this day and age that I have the priviledge to work with so many great people - each with their own identity and beliefs - yet all striving for the same end result. We wish you a very happy holiday season. May your travels be safe, your friendships be strong, and the joy of the season be with you all! anks again!

Happy Holidays! So quickly we have come upon another holiday season! I thoroughly enjoy working with all of you as the years go by. I am blessed to be able to go to work and enjoy every day of it. Granted, a little stress is endured at certain points during the year, but I figure it helps keep things in perspective! As days give way to months and months give way to years, there is always one constant that we can be sure of, we are blessed by the love of a God so encompassing and gracious, no words can adequately describe its presence. Christmas comes and we are reminded, in a big way, of this blessing. e New Year ahead is yet another year of great opportunities and also happens to be an election year. Many questions come to our minds about our personal futures as well as the future of this nation. We all must educate ourselves and get involved in choosing the leader we think is best for our nation's future. It is our responsibility and our duty to have a voice in who leads this great nation with the liberties that we are so fortunate to enjoy. Let us take comfort knowing that God is in control and there are greater things to come, no matter what the outcome turns out to be. Most importantly, may we remember the Christmas blessing during our darkest hours, in our happiest moments, and even in what seem to be the mundane every day tasks we set about completing. May we go about all that we set out to accomplish, do to the glory of God! May God continue to bless you this holiday season and in the year to come!

If you are heading to Denver or the Iowa Beef Expo be sure to look me up! I am always ready to talk about, look through or merchandise good cattle! ank you for making a living with agriculture and thank you for letting us be apart of it! Happy Holidays to You and Yours!!!

Greetings! Where did the year go? It seems like I was just writing this annual letter yesterday for last year’s Holiday magazine. I am sure I am not the only one that would say this, but it seems like time is just flying bye. ey always said if you work at a job that you love, you won’t work a day in your life. I guess I haven’t worked a day yet! In this part of the country we have experienced some interesting weather. Cold and lots of snow this winter led into an over abundance of rain this spring and then, all of the sudden, this summer someone found the faucet and turned it completely off. All in all, it sounds like folks had a great fall weather wise and were able to get crops out at all time fast pace and the crops were very dry. I have heard mixed signals on what this winter holds in store for us. No matter what weather patterns we have in store for us one thing is for sure, we are having a very hot market trends. With calf prices at an all time high, it looks like we are in for a good bull sale season. Last spring we saw tremendous prices and I feel that we should continue to see these in 2012. It looks like the herd bull prospects I have seen are going to be better than last year. If you are looking for a good herd bull give us a call and we would be glad to help you find that next great one. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season as you travel around and eat all of the tasty food that comes about this time of year. In the agriculture community we have a lot to be thankful this year. Travel safe and Happy Holidays,

this year the Choice/Select spread was briefly inverted. But increasing demand for Choice beef has flipped the spread to near-record levels, $17 to $18 per 100 pounds for Low Choice over Select. Low Choice gives Wal-Mart an excellent supply of a quality product that is in high demand. Expect Wal-Mart to capture a higher percent of the beef market shortly. The next step up Certified Angus Beef (Medium Choice) is going even higher, as compared to Select with a $20 to $23 per hundred premium. Corporate consolidation in the grocery and meatpacking industries was the primary topic of concern recently when representatives and members of meatpacking employee unions met in Omaha to discuss issues affecting their members. As retailers and grocery chains have become larger and more powerful, Wal-Mart for example, they’ve been able to dictate lower prices paid for proteins, including beef, pork, and poultry. These lower prices paid by retailers to meat producers trickle down to workers in the form of reduced wages and harsher work conditions. The National Grocers Association, which represents the grocery chains says that it is actively engaged with the Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department on competition issues They encourage local and regional chains to merge so they can compete with the national chains. They also oppose mergers that don’t help consumers or give companies purchasing power over suppliers. Men bond by insulting one another, but they don’t really mean it.
