December 2012

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I say it every year and I will say it again, the year has gone by so fast! It is Christmas again and the start of a new year is just around the corner. Let me thank all of you for making Livestock Plus such a success. It is you, our advertisers and readers, that make it happen every month. We owe our livelihood and the magazine’s success to you. My wish is that you find even greater success in the coming year, as well as those to come. Working together to accomplish a greater goal is fulfilling and satisfying work. I look forward to the new year and being part of such a positive experience. Even more importantly, I pray that as a nation we come together to stand for, protect and defend our freedoms that we have enjoyed for the past 236 years. It seems that our nation is at the edge of extreme change that appears to be going in a different direction than it’s founders had in mind. May we not be timid in our quest for truth, justice and integrity. God is in control. May we seek Him to help us come together in the face of adversity, to become stronger in spirit and resolve, to remain the free country we were created to be.

- Linda Luppen & Family

Greetings! I’d like to take this time to thank all the people that let us work with them on their events. It is very seldom in this day and age that I have the priviledge to work with so many great people - each with their own identity and beliefs - yet all striving for the same end result. We wish you a very happy holiday season. May your travels be safe, your friendships be strong, and the joy of the season be with you all! Thanks again!

- Raz

Hello from the road! I hope this finds you and yours in good health and spirits! I have been busy with many cattle shows, sales and other events all fall and it will only continue as fall turns to winter and winter to spring. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first full year here at Livestock Plus and want to thank all our customers for believing in me and helping me get to where I am. I will be all around the Midwest this winter so give me a shout. I will be more than happy to stop by and look through calves or even just chat! Also, be sure and look me up at the Iowa Beef Expo in February! Happy Holidays,

- Austin Brandt

Greetings! What a year 2012 has been! I think 2013 will be even better. I want to take a second and thank all of the producers we get to work with day in and day out. Working with great people like yourselves makes this job very enjoyable. These fall female sells are very strong and it looks like it is going to go right into bull season. If you are looking for a new herd bull or two, give us a shout and we will try and help you out in finding one. I hope everyone has a great holiday season and we will see you down the road! Best Regards,

- Dustin & Katie Carter

Some Fall Activities to Think About By Toby Muller

Fall is definitely my favorite time of year but I am a little concerned at how fast this summer went. Oh well, on with the cool nights and warm days and away with the hot-humid nights and the hotter and more humid days. One of the other reasons why I think I like the fall so much is that we’re doing a lot of different things this time of year. Not only does the weather transition so does our day to day activities. Here is a few things you might want to think about before you jump into the combine and put the cows on the back burner. Right now is the peak time in the Midwest to ultrasound cows. A lot of our spring cows were bred around 100 days ago which makes it an ideal time to have them fetal aged. Accuracy is very high and typically cull cow prices are still very good through early fall. If you typically precondition your calves, ultrasound your cows when you already have them sorted from the calves. Line up your veterinarian to precondition in the am and ultrasound the cows in the pm or vice versa. It will save time and stress on both you and the animals. Although we don’t typically do a lot of fall carcass ultrasound, now is the time if you need that information. Acceptable scanning age windows vary by breed, but 320 to 440 days is a good guideline to remember. If you have any questions

contact your breed association or scanning technician for more information about that or barn sheets, contemporary groups, EPD’s, or anything else. Finally, if you have any donor(s) picked out, hopefully they’re open and on a good mineral program. If you have yet to wean the calf off your donor you need to decide whether to do that before or after the flush. Under normal circumstances, it usually helps to get the calf weaned so it quits dragging her down. It’s amazing how much weight a young working cow can put on in just a couple weeks without a calf. Either way she will need a little supplement two to three weeks before the flushing protocol starts. The grass may still be there but its nutritional value this time of year is usually suspect. You should also think about the timing of the flush(s). We don’t normally like to flush cows anywhere close to the hot weather, but if you want to squeeze as many flushes out of your cow before you breed her back, it helps to have a plan. A common example could be a donor that you want to flush once and freeze embryos before you do a fresh flush for fall calves (I like to have 60 to 70 days rest between flushes). If you also want to get that donor bred back for a fall calf herself, the math could get even more complicated. Hopefully I gave you some things to think about. It’s a changing world out there and agriculture is no exception. With this one thing is for certain, as our margins continue to tighten in the cattle industry, we will be forced to become more efficient so look ahead and see what you can do to make your cattle operation more productive. n

Commentary

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things by Evan Rayl

Just last month, I reported in this column that a huge fertilizer plant was coming to Southeast Iowa. It is being built by Orascom Industries in Lee County and costing $1.4 Billion. Well it’s happening again only bigger and on the other corner of the state. This time its being built by CF Industries in Woodbury County with a price of $1.7 Billion. With higher corn prices and less expensive natural gas, fertilizer companies are expecting farmers to spread more fertilizer. It will take between 1500 and 2000 workers to build the latest facility over a two year span. In the meantime, 100 workers who will operate the plant will be in training. If these two plants were not being built, a good portion of the product would come from overseas. Read my lips, no new taxes. Just last spring, an 80 acre tract of farmground brought $20,000 per acre in Sioux County, Iowa. Just recently another 80 acre piece sold in the same county for $21,900 per acre. This land was located a little southwest of Boyden. It was reported to be flat land with a CSR of 84.1. The county average is 64.8. In the case of the earlier buyer, he reported that he needed more land for a place to spread manure from his livestock operation. The buyer of the second tract has not been reported at this time. I was on a tour to inspect livestock facilities in Sioux County during the time I wrote this column. Thirty years ago, I was in the construction business and built about 30 silos in the county. The increase in livestock facilities in the past 30 years is almost unbelievable. I can’t hardly believe the number of cornstalk bales they are using in cattle feeding operations. It is certainly the place to go to see varied cattle confinement setups. Equality begins with economic empowerment. “Meat is not the cause of obesity in America”, according to a statement made by Dr. Nehnet Oz on the TV program, “The View.” Dr. Oz is a cardiothoracic surgeon, author and television host as well as director of the Cardiovascular Institute and Complementary Medicine Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital. On the program, Barbara Walters asked Dr. Oz, for three pieces of health advice. He replied, “Cut out the white foods--white rice, white flour, white pasta. Eat real foods - foods that come out of the ground. If you eat them, you will stay thin. And you’ve got to cut out all the sugar, too.” Plus the Doctor says, “Red meat offers muscle-building, fat-burning protein power!”

Weakness and ambivalence lead to war. A New Mexico coyote hunting contest has drawn the ire of opponents nationwide, many of whom have signed an online petition demanding that the hunt be cancelled. Death threats have even been received by the owners of the gun store hosting the hunt. The coyote hunting contest was originally the idea of Calibers Gun Shop of Albuquerque, but pubic pressure caused the store to cancel their plans. This week, however, Mark Chavez, owner of Gunhawk Firearms in Los Lunas, N.M., will sponsor the contest to be held Nov 17-18. According to a report on a local television station, the online petition against Gunhawk Firearm’s coyote hunt drew nearly 7,000 signatures the first day. Comments on the petition and the store’s Facebook page range from support to death threats. “Some of them are perverse, some of them wanting to line up all the redneck’s and hunt them, some of them were wanting to kill us or wishing that we were dead telling us to burn in hell,” said store employee Josh Walters. Most of the people signing the petition don’t live in New Mexico. “I was raised on a cattle ranch and I know the importance of keeping the coyotes in check and keeping your herd strong,” said Chavez. “Losses in the last year reported in New Mexico included 5,500 sheep and 3,700 lambs, plus losses of beef cattle across the southwestern United States exceeded 220,000 head last year.” This is America...a brilliant diversity spread like stars, like a thousand points of light in a broad and peaceful day. Three people are now dead after Lawrence Jones, a 42-year-old employee at the Valley Protein Co., shot four workers and himself recently. Jones died after shooting himself in the head. One of his victims was dead at the scene and another died at the hospital. One is in critical condition and another is in stable condition. Jones had an extensive criminal history dating back to the 1990s and was a discharged parolee. The anchor in our world today is freedom, holding us steady in times of change, a symbol of hope to all the world. Backyard chickens has become the subject of considerable controversy in many cities, large and small, in the past couple of years. In some cities, homeowners already have the right to keep a small number of hens in their backyards, usually 8 or less in a small portable building that can easily be moved to fresh grass. There can be no roosters, no slaughtering, or selling of eggs. Homeowners with chickens will have to clean up the manure weekly. As one would guess, homeowners are strongly divided in regard to this issue. They only name things after you when you’re dead or really old. - all are quotes by George H. W. Bush, U. S. President Tallgrass Beef has been hit with a penalty to the tune of almost $403,000 by USDA’s Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration (GIPSA), the agency said in a news release. Sedan, Kansas based Tallgrass entered into a consent decision with the agency late last month. The civil penalty is for: 1) failing to pay, when due, the full purchase price of livestock. 2) Engaging in the business of a packer when its financial condition does not meet the requirements of the Packers and Stockyards Act, and 3) engaging in the business of a packer without maintaining a bond or bond equivalent. The amount of the penalty can be reduced dollar-for-dollar by restitution made by Tallgrass to its unpaid livestock suppliers, up to almost $353,000, in accordance with an agreement that was ratified by the parties. If Tallgrass fails to satisfy the terms of the understanding, the remaining civil penalty, for which restitution has not been made, will become due in full immediately, the agency said. n

Having the Right Attitude

11/12/12

You have purchased or selected your 4-H market or breeding project. Fed all the right feeds, groomed it countless hours, and now it is time to head to the shows. Preparation and presentation of your investment will make or break your chance to show a champion. With all the time and effort that your family team has put into this project, it is so important that you stay focused on what is at stake. In reality, only one is named “Grand Champion.” Maybe your project doesn’t stand a chance, but you still need to show and present it as though it will be the one the judge can’t turn down for the top prize. 4-H can be an important tool to teach our young people so many life lessons. For instance: How to win and lose with the right attitude and how to work on a team where you are an important player. When in the show ring, you probably never thought of the many other people you are representing. First of all there is your family, the people you purchased your animal from, the bull and cow it is out of, more importantly yourself, but most important God and your country. Consider the impression you are making on people at ringside. It could have an effect on a possible job you may want in the future. Someone that may be watching could have it in their mind to hire you one day. How well you work with others and the way you present yourself and your project will no doubt sway their decision, either way. 12:52 PM A professional attitude has a much larger impact then you might think. Remember to personally thank the judge, the sponsor of the prize you win, and the people who purchase your project. If you lost, don’t forget also to humble yourself and congratulate the person who won. All these things will help the way others think of you. So, at this year’s shows, think about the impression you may be leaving on so many others. Have fun and good luck to you all!
