Greetings, I probably shouldn’t say anything about the weather because I will probably jinx it! But, one thing I do know, is that every day that it is this nice means we are one day closer to spring. As I write this, I am in Denver at the stock show. I had a fella tell me that if it would just stay like this ‘til April first then turn out nice, that would be great! Its 58 degrees, the

about it, ‘cause it sure didn’t look like a chuck of meat that would fit my liking.

Man, I was so wrong! I pulled it out of the freezer, threw it on the grill and smoked it for about 3 hours, then sped things up at 275 for 30 minutes, then to high gear 375 for another 30 minutes.

The timing here is my own concoction, with no adult supervision. I use my handy dandy meat thermometer to make sure I am on target. My wife usually doesn’t just go wild over my new found sun is shining with calm winds experiments but after convincing her to give it a try, even she was impressed. and the view out my motel window is second to none.

I sliced this great piece of meat so that The best piece of meat this we could get 4 meals out of it. We liked month comes from Rock River it so well that it only lasted 2 meals!

Butchers. Whenever I head to Rock River Butchers, please stock pile the extreme northwest part of me several sirloin cap roasts for the Iowa, I try to stop at Rock River Sorensen Family.

Butchers. A friend of mine, Mike Hibma, works there and is my guidNational Western Stock Show - I ance counselor on meat while I’m in his store. One of the things he sug- could tell you about all my experiences gested was a sirloin cap roast. I said ok, but questioned him pretty hard at the Stock Show but I’m going to take the lazy way out. Mostly because Heidi and Linda are on my back side about getting these comments sent to them to proof and get in the book. The pictures below are establishments that I, along with a whole host of other folks, ate at. The all are very good and all great dinning experiences. Thanks to all those establishments and all the folks that ate with me. These are NWSS memories second to none!

“Greetings” continued from page 4 place, but go hungry! Its all you can eat, and then some.

Next on the entertainment schedule was Toby Keith’s place. We had a blast in this place. The food was great and the atmosphere was awesome. We had folks in our group that even tried the mechanical bull, unsuccessfully I might add, but team players. That’s a story in itself. Toby Keith’s is a must if you are ever in Denver.

The Buckhorn Exchange is the oldest restaurant in Denver. I’m not sure what to think of this place. It reminds me of an old house redone to make a steakhouse. They serve kinda different food, too. They had rattlesnake, rocky mountain oysters, buffalo, elk, etc. For appetizers, we had the rocky mountain oysters. I hadn’t had those for ages and they were pretty good. Then for the main course, we had a humongous new york strip that 4 of us shared.

Pretty good eating! There is a lot of history here, on the walls and in the building, with good food as a kicker.

Last, but certainly not the least. When traveling with Ross and Sandy we must have some culture. When leaving Denver we slid up northwest to Boulder to the Celestial Seasoning Tea Factory and the to the Leaning Tree Art Museum. To me, it was almost culture shock, but it was very interesting. I really enjoyed the western art, and I did acquire some pretty high rent tea. Ask for the report.

Have You Ever Felt Like A Fish Out of Water?

I think everyone will be able to relate to this. Recently, our oldest two children decided to take up bow hunting. Therefore, we set out to purchase the equipment necessary to take part in this endeavor. The first bows we purchased were supposed to be the ones that would work for them all through their growing up years, and even into adulthood. Well, after attending our first shooting sports event through 4H, we found out that these bows were definitely not what we wanted. Next, we purchased compound bows from “the experts” only to find out that these were left handed bows, and both children are right handed. The “experts” did not pick up on this! Next, we purchased the bows they currently have, and now we are working on getting the correct arrows and broad heads. What a confusing process! Just like the show cattle business can be.

All this made me think back to when I started to purchase things for showing cattle. I recall all the money that I spent on things that I thought were “just what I needed,” only to find out that there was a better/cheaper product that did the same thing and got better results.

This is the reason we write the Cattle Chat Article for Livestock Plus, travel putting on McCullough Clinics, and produced our Showday and Showday Prep videos. We want to help everyone that is interested in showing cattle, but are like us and the bow hunting experience. You don’t know where to start to find out what to do and what equipment to purchase.

We have been very fortunate and blessed to be able to travel and put on our clinics all over the USA. We enjoy meeting and getting to know people that share the same interests we do. The wonderful people that touch our lives always overwhelm us. The friendships we have formed through these experiences, cannot be explained by words. This is why we wanted to take the opportunity to personally thank everyone who invited us to do a clinic or purchased a show calf from us. We are truly honored that God has brought you into our lives. We look forward to meeting more people throughout this upcoming year. Collegiate and 4-H/FFA Judging Contest to be held at the 2012 Iowa Beef Expo

Des Moines, IA- The Iowa State Fairgrounds Livestock Pavilion will be the site for one of the largest judging contests in the Midwest. The judging contest is scheduled to hold registration from 7:30 A.M. – 8:30 A.M. with the Judging contest beginning at 9:00 A.M. sharp February 12, 2012 opening day for the 2012 Iowa Beef Expo. The contest is open to Junior and Senior Collegiate and 4-H/FFA, teams where they will have the opportunity to test their skills. This judging contest is unique in the aspect that contestants will only evaluate classes of beef cattle. Traditional judging contests include the evaluation of beef, swine, and sheep.

We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the 2012 Iowa Beef Expo Livestock Judging Contest. We hope that your judging season is off to a great start as the spring season begins to unfold.

Entry fees are $75 per College Team and $20 per individual and $45 per 4-H/FFA teams and $15 per individual. This includes a lunch at no additional charge.

Larry & Carol Drake of Drake Simmental Named 2012 Iowa Seedstock Producer of the Year Larry and Carol Drake of Drake Simmental, Centerville, Iowa, have been named as Iowa’s Seedstock Producer of the Year. The coveted award, sponsored annually by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council, is being awarded to Drake Simmental on Monday, February 13, 2012 at the Expo Kick-Off Program; which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Bull Pen of the cattle barn at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. All friends of the Drake Family and the Iowa Beef Expo are invited to attend.

The Seedstock Producer of the Year is a coveted award among Iowa’s Purebred breeders. The purpose of the award is to honor outstanding cattle producers in the seedstock industry. Each Purebred Breed Association is given the opportunity to nominate one candidate for the award. Applications are reviewed by a Seedstock Committee, which gives careful consideration to producers programs in their entirety, including record keeping, industry participation and leadership, merchandising programs, selection criteria and herd improvement over time.

Sim-Angus cattle currently running 190 cows. Performance records have also been kept for 50 years and Drake Simmental has been members of the IBIA for 10 years and the American Simmental Association for 40 years.

Drake Simmental sells 35-40 bulls’ private treaty annually from their herd providing their customers with all the BW, 205 wt., Yearling wt., ADG on Test, WDA and EPD’s that they have available.

Drake Simmental has had production sales on the farm in the past but now sell mostly private treaty and in consignment sales.

Drake Simmental is proud to be a founding member and past president of the Hawkeye Simmental Inc. group. Larry and Carol have also been involved with their County Cattlemen’s association.

Drake Simmental has had the great fortune to receive awards such as: Premier Breeder Award at the National Western Stock Show in 2003, 2005 and 2006 along with two Top Sire Groups in the I.B.I.A. Bull Test.

In his own words here is a brief historical review of his seedstock operation: Larry grew up with Polled Herefords and by 1960 they were production testing their cattle. The did gain testing at home and put bulls in the then I.B.I.A. Test. By the late 60’s they were looking for a way to improve the milking of their cows – gave the Simmental Breed a try and quickly jumped weaning by 100 pounds.

As time passed we sold more Simmental and less Herefords and by 1980 they were all Simmental. In the early 90’s we went to black Simmental and in the 2000’s we added the Sim-Angus.

We’ve always raised cattle that fit the environment, they are never in a barn – they graze cornstalks in the fall and winter and consume much of their needs from feedstuff that would otherwise be wasted.

Every cow past two years of age calves in a 40 acre or larger field, they have to calve by themselves as well as take care of the calf, then breed back and do this every year. Their belief is if you breed that outstanding cow everything else is mostly taken care of.

The cattle business has been our life. We love the cattle, working to improve them, the wonderful people in the cattle business and the great young people we have been involved with. We have always believed in and did anything we could to help young people in the cattle business.

We believe that future of the cattleman and cattlewoman has never been better. The job requires more work than most jobs and thinks the monetary rewards will be excellent. To survive you must have a profit but the rewards of loving your cowboy life, friends, family, honesty, pride, working with family and just the joy of that new calf in the green grass of Spring exceeds all else. n

JUNIOR HEIFER AWARD PROGRAM This program is for heifers purchased at the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic Sales by Juniors.

The heifers will have to be shown at the Classic Junior Show (this class is open to out of state youth also). The heifers will be entered into the respective Junior National Show to be held in Nebraska. The Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic will require that the official Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic ear tag will still be in place at the Junior National Show.

The Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic will present the Junior Member that follows the program with $100 cash award. If the heifer wins her class at the Junior National Show the youth will receive an additional $100 Classic Cash Award (certificate towards any purchase at any of the 2013 Classic Sales). If the heifer is named a Junior National Champion the youth will receive $250 Classic Cash.

Whats On My Mind

By Toby Muller Well, hopefully as you are reading this, winter is still holding off as we keep inching closer to spring. Here in the Midwest, it seems our cattlemen have checked more things off of their list of things to do than ever before. It sure is nice to get to the point of feeling “almost” caught up. We’ve been no different here at Ultra Ova. Although we’ve run more cows through the chute this winter than the previous two together, we haven’t had to push snow and the recipient cows are about on autopilot.

With a little bit more of a “head above water feeling” we’ve started to give some attention to the legislative session at hand. It’s taken me a good share of my life to realize that the things they decide in those committee meetings have a big impact on the everyday lives of all of us.

As many of you may know, there has been a movement the past couple of years by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and Farm Bureau to pass legislation relating to ultrasound and embryo transfer technicians. At this point in time, there are different interpretations of what the existing Iowa law says, mainly because the law was written before ultrasound and embryo transfer were used. As you can imagine this leaves several technicians unsure of their long-term status as this topic gets debated.

This is not a fight against our local veterinarians, as some may think.

I have worked alongside and with many veterinarians to help them provide these services to their customers. This allows their customers to utilize the benefits of these specialized technologies without the huge

investment of time and money. This can be especially helpful to the single man practitioner. In my opinion, it takes at least 10,000 head of cattle a year to stay proficient which is not practical for most veterinarians and the few veterinarians that have made E.T. and ultrasound services a priority, know there is a shortage of good providers, technicians or veterinarians, and both have plenty to do themselves.

As cattlemen, there are other things that could be affected by this outcome as well. The proponents of shutting down non-veterinarian technicians claim that these procedures are too invasive and that E.T. requires the use of prescription drugs. First of all, any drug a client of mine may need comes from his own veterinarian and is administered by their own veterinarian or the producer, just as if he were synchronizing his cows for A.I. Let’s not forget about the custom heifer developments and custom feedlots who give shots to other people’s cattle every day.

Second, neither of these procedures is more invasive than A.I. or semen collection.

I’ll wind this down by asking you to contact your legislators and ask them to vote for embryo transfer and ultrasound technicians and let the free-market system do its job. This outcome could do much more than hamper the ability of producers to find quality embryo transfer and ultrasound services, it could be the start of still more regulations on livestock producers. With the low number of qualified and\or interested veterinarians, a low number of technicians, and a current record low cow population that is trying to grow and deal with tighter margins, it seems anti-American to allow anything else. - Toby n

Commentary

How to Freeze Brand Cattle

1-17-12 In every state west of Iowa, branding is an annual ritual that takes place on virtually every ranch in the spring just before the bulls are put out to pasture. In Iowa, only 4,000 brands are registered and worse yet, most are not used, resulting in a haven for cattle thieves. Nearby, a farmer was arrested in Southern Iowa, who has admitted to many thefts in the area spread over the past ten years.

If you protect your cattle by freeze branding, you greatly reduce the chances of being a victim. Thieves will look for an easier mark.

With $1,000 feeder calves and $2,000 heifers and cows, there is considerable more interest in freeze branding in areas east of where hot branding is done. Thus, this article is being reprinted once again.

Hot or freeze branding is simply the best way to prevent thieves from stealing your cattle or to permanently identify your cattle.

Since July 1, 1995, freeze brands have been a legal brand in Iowa.

Not only are these brands proof of ownership in a court of law, but livestock auctions and other cattle buyers will check ownership carefully if freeze branded cattle are presented to them for sale. Also, if you have cattle get out, everyone in the neighborhood will know where they belong. My neighbors would all know who to call if they see a cow with a freeze brand out. In addition, if you also put number brands on, each animal is easily identified for production testing purposes. I only replace lost ear tags when cattle go through the chute for routine veterinary work.

The big advantage of freeze branding is the brand is readable year round on black or red cattle. Good brands are easily seen from quite a distance and legible from over 50 feet. Cattlemen with white cattle have no choice but to hot brand, since freeze branding kills the pigment in the hair, turning it white. Some have suggested that holding the freeze brand on for a longer time will kill the hair and look like a hot brand, without the disadvantages of hot branding. I dislike hot brands. They are faster to apply, but I don't like it because I can’t stand the smell and hate the pain to the cattle. Not to mention, the hide is discounted after slaughter.

The only disadvantage to freeze branding is the amount of time it takes. Try as we may, it takes at least ten minutes for two of us to place my brand and three numbers on each animal. But at the same time, to hurry too much is a mistake, since the brands are likely to turn out bad. Do not try to apply two irons at once. Too many bad brands will be the result. On the other hand, we placed over 400 brands and numbers last year and they all are very legible. We follow the procedure as described here as closely as possible. Forty head in a day is the most we’ve ever done.

If you have a registered brand, all you need is freeze branding equipment and materials. If you do not, the place to start is by getting your own registered brand. If you live in Iowa, contact the State Livestock Brand Recorder at 515-281-8617 to request a registration pack be sent to you. Work with the Recorder to select your own unique brand for approval. The fee for first time registration is $25 and renewals are $25. Each is good for five years.

Once you have registered a brand, the next step is to get an iron with your brand and also a set of number brands if you wish to individually identify your cattle. Excellent brands for freeze branding are manufactured by L & H Mfg., Mandan, ND. They are made of copper alloy and come in various sizes. I like 4 inch by 9/16th inch thick, best. A set of numbers and a brand will cost around $200-250 depending on the size selected. My personal brand was made at a local machine shop from cold rolled steel and it works just as well as the copper alloy brands. We brand both bulls and heifers at about a year of age. Remember that the brand will grow until the animal is mature. The younger the age at which you brand, the larger the brand will be in older animals.

Equipment Needed:

1. A good head gate and squeeze chute is a must to hold the animal as still as possible while the brand is being applied. If possible, move the bottom of the squeeze in to keep cattle from going down. A breast plate in the chute helps keep the animal standing, too.

2. A brand and/or set of number brands as needed. A 6 and 9 are the same brand reversed.

3. Animal hair clippers with sheep head blades.

4. Animal hair clippers with the thin surgical blade (EA1-sur) made by the Stewart/Oster Co. Used with the regular top blade (83AU), it will clip real close. It is good to have two or even more sets of each type of blades on hand or more if doing a larger group. Blades will quit cutting in the blink of an eye and there seems to be a huge variation in how long they will last.

5. Container or two large enough to set all the brands on the bottom at one time for cooling. We have a 96 can plastic picnic container with a wooden cover with rectangular openings to slip the brands down into the ice and alcohol with each opening identified with the same number as the brand.

6. Mister bottles. The best bottles are the ones costing about $2, normally used for misting flowers and sold by garden supply shores.

Again, its best to have at least two or more on hand, because they wear out fairly rapidly. Walmart is one who carries the misters.

7. A large clock with a second hand to be used for timing of brand application.

8. A large styrofoam cooler to store the dry ice. The one we have was previously a 96 can cooler. I made a wooden lid with holes in it to put the brands down thru to the alcohol and dry ice Necessary Supplies: • Dry Ice - get at least a pound per head, two pounds would be better if it is going to be a hot, windy day-I like it in one or two inch slices, then place it in a plastic water softener sack and beat it up with a hammer. Leave in chunks larger than ice cubes.

• 99% Alcohol - do not even try to use 70% (the other 30% is water-it will turn to syrup)-get at least a gallon per 10 head, more is better. Store the excess for next year. I try to keep at least a years supply or more in stock all the time.

• Extra sharpened clipper blades.

• Diesel Fuel or WD40 to lubricate the clippers.

• Screwdriver to change blades.

• Funnel - to put alcohol back in bottles. Strain through a cloth.

• Heavy plastic bags and a hammer for breaking up the ice.

• Rice root brush and old towels for cleaning the brand location.

Freeze Branding Procedure: 1. Break up enough dry ice to cover the bottom of the container(s) with at least two inches of ice. Pour enough alcohol over the ice to cover the ice and the brands placed down in the ice. Add more ice and alcohol as needed during the day. As soon as one is done using a brand place it back in the ice and do not use it again until bubbling stops.

2. Restrain the animal in the chute by the neck and tighten the squeeze chute on the body as much as is possible.

3. Clip the hair in the area to be branded. In the winter or spring use a sheep head clipper first, then clean the area with a brush, then alcohol and a towel, followed by the other clipper with the surgical blade to get the hair as short as possible. Again clean the area with the brush, followed by alcohol and a towel to get the area absolutely clean.

4. Just before placing each and every brand, saturate the individual brand site with alcohol from the mister to provide liquid contact between the iron and the hide. This step is critical to obtaining a good brand because alcohol will evaporate quickly.

5. Apply the brand to the hide for 75 seconds, all the time spraying more alcohol on the brand with the mister every 10 seconds or so. This technique has done more to improve our brands than an other single thing we have changed in the thirty-five years we have been freeze branding. Watch the clock hanging beyond the chute to determine the elapsed time. Some have suggested that it is not necessary to hold the brand on for 75 seconds, but doing so will eliminate the possibility of any bad brands if other procedures are followed properly. “Freeze Brand” continued from page 106 will grow back, and your brands will be white hair. Others have tried holding the brand on less than 75 seconds, but they will all admit after trying less than 75 seconds, that 75 seconds works best.

6. I am always looking for ways to improve our freeze branding methods. The newest one is to use a level to put a level mark across the side of the bovine at the top of where we want to place the brand.

A Sharpie felt pen works good to mark the line. We then place the individual brands as straight up and down as best we can just below this line. Our brands look a lot neater this way. Anytime I come up with an improvement and I am satisfied it really works, it is posted to this article.

Notes and Observations: Animals will react somewhat less to the super cooled iron as opposed to a hot one, but they will still try to jump, usually about ten to fifteen seconds into branding. If the brand is knocked off its location during branding, just reapply and add an extra 5 seconds plus the time lost.

One will have a good idea if the brand is done properly if the hide area is frozen stiff. One can determine this by taping with your fingernail. It should feel like taping on a ice cube. It will take three to four weeks for the brand to show up nicely.

Alcohol will migrate through a styrofoam cooler, but not a plastic one, so I have gone to a 96-can Rubbermaid cooler. It will hold all the number brands, but not your herd brand. I have a smaller plastic cooler for the herd brand. You can’t believe how much alcohol will migrate into the styrofoam, the plastic cooler will pay for itself the first year you use it.

Make some arrangement where you put the irons back in the cooler each time in the same place, while you are using them for the sake of efficiency. I have a piece of half inch plywood with rectangular holes in it for each brand.

while branding. Also do not smoke because the alcohol is very flammable. Do not use a cattle prod in the work area.

I do not recommend using gasoline with the dry ice for a coolant, as it is even more flammable than alcohol. I also do not recommend antifreeze because it will be too syrupy to work well. Plus, I also do not recommend using liquid nitrogen as a coolant because it is 373 degrees below zero and will kill the hair under the brand and leave a gray line around the edge of the brand, which makes it a lot harder to read. It is even more dangerous to work with liquid nitrogen, because of the extreme cold.

The author of these instructions recommends you register a brand, get the necessary equipment, and start freeze branding. Not only will it deter thieves, but you will appreciate the convenience of permanent, easy to read identification.

Incidentally, both hot and cold brands are now an accepted replacement for tattoos on Registered Angus Cattle.

The most important thing, to get very readable brands, is simply to take the time to do it right. Rushing is the reason for most all failures.

If one will brand all their heifers each year, in a few years the whole herd will be branded. I have never personally branded older cattle, but those who have, tell me it works just as good as branding younger cattle.

But video surveillance indicated that raccoons and birds were regularly consuming feed out of the standard feeders as well. In one video, a single raccoon was able to dig out approximately 150 pounds of feed onto the ground in a single visit lasting just over an hour. In areas where there are wild hogs, they will empty a feeder in a few days. If one is having trouble with wild hogs, getting in touch with hunters who like to hunt or trap hogs could solve your problem.

The whole weather changing has been brutal here in Iowa! Love, love the 60 degree weather but then the sudden drop to 0 is actually painful!!

This leads me to my first story about Tucker out “trying” to ride his bike. He has a few trust issues with riding especially after the couple times I let go this summer.

Anyway, he was out riding in the beautiful weather and when I asked how it went he said with the most serious face, “Mom, I swerve all over like George Jones.” If I would have had a drink in my mouth it would have been sprayed all over. However, with my surprised face I asked, “I’m sorry what did you say?” Again completely serious, “I just can’t stop swerving all over like George Jones. Ya know like that song.” I guess I listen to Jason Aldean a little too much…wow! Thank goodness we haven’t gotten into why Mr. Jones used to swerve.

I have to tell ya, I have a fabulous girlfriend that makes tutus and tutu outfits with matching flowers for the hair. The other morning we were going to church and our pastor had told us to wear our favorite sports team. Of course, my brother and I planned out our 49ers outfits for our families. That morning Taylor informed me that she wanted to be a Niner princess. So she wore her red tutu (from Christmas Eve) and her big red flower in her hair. Topped off, of course, with a couple of strands of beads. I had to talk her down from the tiara. But I guess she puts her own spin on things!!!

Mommy & Me Flowers by Dena Crouch is the name of the company! She has a Facebook page and her phone number is 402-319-6744. Taylor even has a pink camouflage tutu that she wears when Tuck insists on wearing what he calls his army pants (camouflage)! Dena makes great gifts with super fun baby/toddler outfits, tutus, bloomers, headbands, blankets, burp cloths and even car seat covers!
