MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES Cell: 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com
Greetings, You gotta really enjoy this Midwest weather, one day you hit 50 degrees then within a week, wind chills to 60 below. Guess we are getting closer to spring every day that goes by. My opening comments this month are going to be somewhat different. Dixie and I, along with Ross Butler and Sandy Kinzenbaugh, headed out on our usual run to the National Western Stock Show. Ross and Sandy along with Dixie, preplanned our first day and evening in Colorado to include a trip to Breckenridge. Now, most of you know that I have always said, “when National Western Stock Show is on, and I am in Denver, then that’s where I am going to be at, the Stock Show.” Ski slopes and lodges, shopping in the mountains, and playing in snow is not on my agenda. Well, maturity and forty years of marriage can change lots of things. They planned a five o’clock sleigh ride for an hour and a supper chaser. B&B Equipment:Layout 1 9/19/12 10:28 AM Page 1 Just let me tell you, weather can play a very important part of

sleigh riding in Colorado in January. All was good while we were sitting in the lodge waiting for departure. When we finally crawled on that sleigh, lots of blankets were awaiting us and heavy blankets, they were. About 3 minutes into the sleigh ride I figured out why there were so many blankets, then 20 minutes into it, I was kinda thinking it was time to be done. I guess, sitting in what seemed to be 10 degree weather for an hour with refreshing wind out of the north, off the snow covered mountains, with absolutely no wind break and no Carharts or insulated boots and a wife that seemed to be so cold that she didn’t even complain about it, we all really enjoyed it. I will say that if we were to do it again, I guarantee we will be more prepared. Now, on to the meal. The atmosphere of the lodge was great. The meal was just as good! I’m not sure what they officially called those little beef chunks, but they were deadly. Those along with the garlic-mashed potatoes and a warm lodge with a fireplace, we had a blast. After traveling around the mountains in Colorado, I really would like to say that I am really proud of good ol’ Iowa. We have straight roads. I think there were times going up in those mountains that I could see my own tail lights! That is one curvy road from Denver to Breckenridge. A great time was had by all! Just go prepared. Well, I am writing this as we are packing to leave Denver. The weather here is perfect and I hope its this way all the way home. As always keep our military in your thoughts and prayers. God Bless

Most beef producers will tell you “good help is hard to find”. While we tend to agree, we believe a good hired hand and a good herd bull have a lot in common… both get the job done! HCC bulls are designed to work as hard as your best hired hand to sire vigorous calves that weigh heavy and hang a value-added carcass. We encourage you to mark February 25 on your calendar and join us for our 6th Annual Angus Bull Sale.

NEWS RELEASE
Amstutz Named Commercial Cattle Maine-Anjou Parade & Sale Producer of the Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014 - Banquet, Annual Meeting & Fundraiser Auction at 6 p.m. in the Walnut Center, Iowa State Fairgrounds Year Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 - Parade at 9 a.m.
Sale at 2:30 p.m. AMES, IOWA – Aaron Amstutz is indicative of the new face of commercial cattle **Sires represented: SLC Sooner 101M, Hall’s Legacy producers in Iowa. Through the use of Plus, DCC Hard Drive and I-80!** production technology and modern cattle Hard Drive Legacy Plus I-80 facilities, this 34-year-old from Bloomfield earned this year’s Iowa Outstanding Commercial Cattle Producer Award. He received the award during the Iowa Cattle Industry Convention held Dec. 9-11 in Altoona. The award is jointly sponsored by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and the Iowa Beef Breeds Council. Amstutz uses both spring and fall calving in his farm operation in southeastern Davis County. The majority, about 275 cows and heifers, are in the spring calving herd; there are 100 head of fall calving These bulls sell! cows. “This allows us to spread out cash flow and make better use of our herd sires,” he said. Calves are early weaned, between 90 to 130 days of age. Once weaned, the calves are moved to a bedded monoslope building where they are fed a total mixed ration which is primarily forages harvested on the farm and corn co-product feeds. The monoslopes, which was built in 2010, has allowed the farm to shift to a weanThese heifers sell! to-finish facility. Once cattle hit the 850pound mark, the ration changes to corn, corn silage, and corn co-product feeds, and includes the use of feed additives that focus growth on muscle instead of fat. Sale Contact Amstutz Cattle, Inc. markets its fed Jim Opperman - 712.653.3032 cattle on either live weight or carcass NO TH & PHA CARRIERS ARE ALLOWED TO SELL weight basis, and Amstutz says the focus on adding muscle weight “has enabled me to increase profitability by selling heavier calves due to improved feed efficiency and performance.” Besides selling fed cattle from his calf crop, Amstutz said about 5% of his calf crop is sold as market weaned calves, and 20% are sold as replacement quality heifers, which is another way to add premium to the cattle sold from the farm. Amstutz credits the use of high quality bulls and artificial insemination that has improved his breeding stock and provides him with quality heifers for sale. The source for the farm’s herd bulls is Ellingson Angus of North Dakota. Amstutz says the bulls meet his needs for performance, carcass traits, good phenotype and maternal qualities in his cow herd. Amstutz is a graduate of Kirkwood Community College, and returned to the family farm in 2000. He bought a 75% interest in his father’s cow herd, which numbered 85 at the time. He bought another 36 cows in 2003, but since then has maintained a closed herd so he can take full advantage of his herd genetics. n

Eugene and Colleen Knop of Knop Angus Farm Named 2014 Iowa Seedstock Producer of the Year Eugene and Colleen Knop of Knop Angus Farm, Ida Grove, Iowa, have been named as Iowa’s Seedstock Producer of the Year. The coveted award, sponsored annually by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council, is being awarded to Eugene and Colleen Knop on Monday, February 10, 2014 at the Expo Kick-Off Program; which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Bull Pen of the cattle barn at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. All friends of the Knop family and the Iowa Beef Expo are invited to attend. The Seedstock Producer of the Year is a coveted award among Iowa’s Purebred breeders. The purpose of the award is to honor outstanding cattle producers in the seedstock industry. Each Purebred Breed Association is given the opportunity to nominate one candidate for the award. Applications are reviewed by a Seedstock Committee, which gives careful consideration to producers programs in their entirety, including record keeping, industry participation and leadership, merchandising programs, selection criteria and herd improvement over time. Knop Angus Farm has been in the Seedstock cattle business for 71 years raising Angus cattle currently running 50 cows. Performance
records have also been kept for 71 years and the Knops’ have been members of the American Angus Association for 55 years. Knop Angus Farm uses a variety of merchandising techniques; including private treaty, breed association sales, and production sales. In his own words here is a brief historical review of his seedstock operation: During the course of the past 71 years, Knop Angus Farm has grown and evolved into a powerful force in the Angus breed. Founded in 1941 by Gene and his three brothers, Fritz, Jute, and Herb. The foundation females were purchased from Elmer Johnson of Kiron, Iowa. Our late father Fred Knop entered the Angus enterprise in 1946 and set the tone that built the Knop “Performance Plus” breeding program into an Angus dynasty. Mr. Knop knew that if this herd were to reach our lofty goals set, we would need to use superior bulls either from our herd or someone else’s. At this time, we looked for two things; good size and show conformation. Dad liked the show ring and used it for customer contacts, and he also liked the color purple. Fred remained a part of the enterprise until retirement, at which time he sold his remaining herd to Eugene and Colleen. Eugene and Colleen continued to build the herd by purchasing high performing bulls in the 60’s it was O’Neill Jingo, who grew to be a “one ton” bull and laid the foundation for the next great cross. That great cross came after the purchase of the bull for the 70’s, Jetliner 707 of Conanga. Jetliner was the bull our father had always dreamed of owning. Jetliner was a ten time Champion or Res. Champion at major shows, he also made history when he was selected as the winner for two of the five categories measured at the Liberty Bell Sire Evaluation Contest; sponsored by the American Association. Their next great accomplishment came with the bull Mon Reposa King 2545. He earned various Champion and Res. Champion honors as well as a value aspect to the Knops’ breeding herd. In 1978 at the Sir William’s Angus Farm sale, Sir Williams Wampum was selected by the Knop’s to carry the program to the next level. The Wampum/Jetliner crosses made history at the Knop Angus Farm when KAF Sundown 2123 sold for $140,000.00 in their 1982 sale. He also produced KAF Rocky Gold, which had a record setting sale price of $30,000.00 at the 1984 Iowa Winter Beef Expo. The year of 1985 brought several changes to the Knop Angus Farm; the herd was reduced to a more manageable level. While the strength of the cow herd remained intact and the same principles will be adhered to, there was also talk of new tools and techniques to help better achieve their goals. Some of the most recent improvements to the herd have been the addition of the KAF Gold Strike, who sired KAF Solid Gold and KAF Rocky Gold, both record sellers and performance leaders. The latest addition to the herd was Knops Discovery 530-210 owned by Sheryl (daughter of Eugene and Colleen Knop) and her husband Mark Leonard, which topped the efficiency test over 109 bulls at the Purina Sponsored Test. This outlines our breeding program and how we have approached reaching our goals set 71 years ago. This has been a family adventure from day one. Many thanks to a great leader in my father, Fred Knop for setting such high standards. He loved the show ring and the excitement it created and the customer contact it afforded. The excitement of winning with a high performance bull made his day and also does mine. n

Times Square Billboard Calls Out HSUS for Misleading Public Submitted by Evan Rayl Released by The Center for Consumer Freedom As part of its ongoing campaign to expose the deceptive fundraising practices of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), HumaneWatch. org, a project of the Center for Consumer Freedom, launched a billboard in Times Square calling attention to a little-known fact: Despite its commercials and fundraising materials featuring sad-looking puppies and kittens, HSUS gives only one percent of its $120 million budget to support local pet shelters. The billboard is located in Times Square at Broadway and 46th Street. The ad features a picture of an angry-looking cat with the headline, “WTF? (Where’s The Funding?),” and goes on to explain, “The Humane Society of the United States only gives 1% of its budget to local pet shelters.” The ad concludes by prompting viewers, “Find Out About the Deception At: HumaneWatch.org.” The one percent figure was calculated after reviewing HSUS’s most recent Form 990 tax return from 2012 and is included as part of HumaneWatch.org’s fourth annual report, “Not Your Local Humane Society.” The full report breaks down all HSUS contributions to local pet shelters on a state-by-state basis dating back to 2009. Unfortunately for shelter pets, the one percent total is no anomaly – it’s the norm. “The Humane Society of the United States is making money by manipulating Americans, reeling in pet lovers with pictures of sad-looking puppies only to then funnel their donations to a radical agenda,” said Will Coggin, CCF’s senior research analyst. “Instead of spending its money where it is most desperately needed – saving lives at local shelters – in 2012 HSUS spent $50 million on fundraising expenses alone, bankrolled PETA-style propaganda campaigns, maintained a huge staff of lawyers and lobbyists, and rewarded its top brass with bloated salaries and benefits.” Coggin concluded, “HSUS has $200 million in assets. Pet shelters are struggling day in and day out to help save the lives of pets, but it appears HSUS has other priorities. Animal lovers should demand better from this selftitled ‘humane society,’ and give to their local pet shelter instead.” n

Sometimes, I think that cattle are right in the center of the political dart board. A group of scientists have suggested in a new study that meat should be taxed to prompt people to eat less of it and thereby aid in reducing emissions contributed by livestock, according to a report by The Guardian. The study, published in the journal; Natural Climate Change, proposes that methane emissions be reduced by raising meat prices through a tax or emissions trading scheme. Emissions from livestock make up some 14.5 percent of all human-related greenhouse gases, according to the United Nations. The body estimates that percentage could be cut by nearly a third through better farming practices. Nowhere, does the report mention that a large percentage of the feed consumed by beef is only consumable by ruminants.

All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother. The National Finals Rodeo is planning to leave Las Vegas for Florida after 29 years, moving an event that brings in nearly $100 million to the local economy. This is about the same financial effect as the National Western Stock Show brings to Denver. Las Vegas officials say they plan to launch a competing rodeo series and finals, if the deal goes through. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association board voted 6-3 to turn down Sin City’s offer in favor of an agreement with Florida’s Osceola County, located south of Orlando. At the same time, the Osceola County Commissioners voted 5-0 to accept a memorandum of understanding that allows 90 days to close the deal. The new agreement moves the event in 1915 to the Amway Center, home of the Orlando Magic. County commissioners plan to build a new, 24,000 seat arena to be ready for the event by the fall of 2016. In addition, the deal would include $16 million annually for prize money, as well as revenue sharing. Rodeo officials point out the decision is not yet final. Looks like a bidding war is about to start. And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years. The Peterson Brothers from Kansas have proven to be much more than a one hit wonders with several more song parody videos. The farm brothers hit the spotlight a year ago when they changed the lyrics on music group LMFAO’s song, “I’m sexy and I Know it” to “I’m Farming “Little Bit” continued on page 104

regarded bakery located at the junction of I-90 and Hwy 287, leading into Three Forks, home of the three rivers that join to start the Missouri River. He has the right to criticize who has the heart to help. A December 23rd fire at the Cargill beef processing plant near Dodge City, Kansas caused only minor delays to the company’s production schedule. The plant resumed operations on December 26th and was back to full production the next day. The fire was in a section of the roof near the cattle harvest area. Company officials think an exhaust malfunction could have started the fire, but the cause officially remains under investigation. According to Cargill’s website, the Dodge City plant is the largest fresh beef production facility in Kansas. The plant employs more than 2,700 people. Cargill announced last summer it was investing $48 million to install a new order distribution system capable of holding about 155,000 boxes. This will increase boxed beef capacity at the plant by 130,000 boxes. The system is expect to be fully operational by spring 2015. I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live by the light that I have. I must stand with anybody that stands right and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong.
“Little Bit” continued from page 102 and I Grow It.” In this past year, they put together several more videos appearing on YouTube where they were very popular. They have had nine million views so far. The Peterson’s say they are creating the videos to help bridge the gap between rural and urban, producer and consumer. Good for them. I don’t know if they have had any marriage proposals yet. Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing. Three life-sized horse sculptures were stolen from a group of 39 displayed on a hill in southwest Montana, but they have now been found on a nearby ranch by a local landowner with very little damage. The local rancher, who asked that his name be withheld, refused the $3,000 reward money. Sculptor Jim Dolan said recovery of the horses was a relief. It took him 15 months to construct the herd valued at $50,000. The sculptures were originally installed on Wheat Montana Farms property in September as a gift to the people of Montana. The sheriff said he was having the stolen sculptures repaired and will reinstall them in their original location. Currently there are no suspects in the theft and the case is still being investigated. Incidentally, Wheat Montana is a highly

In further Kansas packing plant news, Creekstone Farms Premium Beef LLC announced recently that it will expand its operations in Arkansas City, Kansas. The beef processing company, which has been based in Arkansas City for over 10 years, currently employs 720 and anticipates hiring an additional 300 workers during the next five years. The company plans to replace areas of the existing building damaged by a recent fire. An additional 71,000 square foot building will include a new refrigerated fabrication floor area, packaging, combo cooler storage, refrigerated truck docks, processing support and equipment rooms, inspection and production offices, and employee welfare spaces. Creekstone is a major supplier of quality beef to Japan. I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crises. The great point is to bring them the real facts. Again, all quotes are by our 16th President Further down the food chain, three horse packing plants in New Mexico, Missouri, and Iowa have been granted the right to start operations by a federal appeals court ruling. It is doubtful that any of the three will actually try to open their plant for operation given that the Humane Society of the United States and other groups have a lawsuit filed against each plant and could also refile for another injunction to prevent operation as well. This is a dreadfully sad situation given there is no useful place to dispose of old or injured horses and realize even a small return for the owners investment. Meanwhile, French people will pay a premium for horse meat. The biggest loser of all, is the U.S. Government (that is you and I), who has close to 40,000 wild horses confined to lots and fed hay at our expense (a little over 5 dollars/day each), while another similar size group of horses is running wild on government lands. n

I have to give a shout out to my Uncle Jerry Sorensen for making THE most incredible smoked pork tenderloin I have ever experienced. It was seasoned perfectly and makes my mouth water a little just thinking about it! The comment was made that it had the perfect smoke ring as well, so kudos to my Uncle! Also, I have to give my Aunt Mary credit for her warm crab dip in the fresh bread bowl and the many, many cookies and candies she brings us each year! Yep, I gained an easy 5-10 pounds!!! It’s just soooo good! Well, Tuck had a pretty eventful day working with pigs and he hasn’t stopped talking about watching the birth of several babies. He described to me, in detail, about the after birth and that he helped check to see if there were any more left to come out. He has also determined that after he finishes college, he will be living in Greenfield, raising pigs and flying every Sunday to San Francisco to PLAY for the 49ers. Oh, and he would be sure to get me a ticket too, so I could watch every game. It’s so hard not to giggle at his larger than life plans, but he is so serious. I pointed out that maybe if he was playing professional football, we could get someone to watch the pigs during the season and he could actually practice all week with his team, plus, I was thinking I would get two houses out of the deal! Tuck laughed but he liked that idea. What really made me laugh, though, and probably my favorite part of his plan, was that he would just hire Papa
(my father) to take care of the pigs while we are gone because he would trust Papa to do a good job. I’m sure Dad would love that idea! I hope everyone has had a great start to 2014 and I look forward to seeing everyone this month at the Iowa Beef Expo, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic, and Illinois Beef Expo! Don’t worry Stephanie Sindel I didn’t forget :) … and coming up in March, the Ohio Beef Expo! Wishing everyone many BLESSINGS and please keep our military and their families in your every day prayers! Heidi Sorensen • 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com I had to share this cartoon I got from my friend, Shawn Varner’s, Facebook timeline because it made me laugh out loud!!!
