Commentary

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things by Evan Rayl

At the risk of getting into further trouble, I am going to comment further on something I wrote last month about the XL Pipeline in Nebraska. I said, “I was in favor of moving the pipeline out around the Ogallala Aquifer in Nebraska, but with the new route in place there is no good reason to hold construction up any longer.” That statement was wrong. Turns out the wrong map was used to determine the outline of the Aquifer and the current pipeline route goes across the corner of the Aquifer in the northeast part of Nebraska. If there was a leak in this area, the entire area of the Aquifer extending clear to the west and the south would be polluted and this wonderful high quality water source would be ruined for years. The Ogallala Aquifer is the largest and most useful ground water source in North America. Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I’ll spend the first four sharpening the axe. Last spring on the 2nd of May, a late spring snow storm killed thousands of baby calves in Iowa and Northern Missouri. Far more calves were born at this time this year than usual because of the extreme drought the previous summer which delayed many cows from settling earlier. Then on the 4th of October, an early huge snow storm killed thousands of cattle in western South Dakota and surrounding areas. The death toll in both areas in terms of numbers and dollars was huge, but South Dakota’s was worse. We lost only calves. On the other hand, sometimes it doesn’t take but very little snow to cause death loss. A few years ago, we had an unpredicted very small snow storm accompanied by 70 mile an hour winds where all the snow blew into the ditches. After the storm, I was missing two cows, but couldn’t find them anyplace. My cows had found a good spot behind a terrace below a hill, which was just about the best place they could have been, short of coming up to our farmstead and going into the calving barn. That’s exactly where they would have been had the weather service warned producers there might have be high winds. Apparently, those two cows wondered away from the rest of the herd and went downwind into a ditch about an eighth of a mile away and six feet deep. When spring came water running down the ditch exposed the lower part of the legs of those two cows hanging out the bottom of the snowdrift that was bridged across the ditch. I’m not complaining, I was so lucky only two cows ventured away from the rest of the herd.

nearly 30,000 head kill capacity each, there is surplus beef kill capacity to slaughter any stock ready to kill in the meantime. Creekstone officials said they had enough meat in cold storage to handle orders until the plant could again be operational by the middle of October. Employees at the plant will receive regular pay until they can come back to work. Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle. All quotes are by Abe Lincoln again this month Shirley, my bride of 53 years and I would like to wish all the readers of Livestock Plus a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope it is such that all your family can get together during this season. Shirley and I are lucky, all three of our children live within 70 miles of us. The only thing is, they live closer to each other, so we only get to have Christmas at our house every fourth year. I’ve already bought my Christmas present, the ear corn cutter I was looking for in this column a couple of months ago. Thanks for your help, Brian. I’ll report more about this next month along with a picture. I’m taking it to the machine shop for minor repairs today. In the meantime, say a prayer for those folks who are in the armed services and can’t get home for Christmas. God, please keep them safe. n

Don’t interfere with anything in the Constitution, that must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties. This was never reported back when it happened. Somehow, the company apparently managed to keep it out of the trade papers. Most likely a bearing started the blaze. A fire stopped production at the Creekstone Farms Premium beef packing plant at Arkansas City, Kansas the 26th of September. The main product conveyor caught fire, shutting the plant down for an undetermined length of time. The plant processes approximately 1,000 head of high quality Black Angus cattle each operating day. Because each of the country’s largest beef processors, Cargill Inc., Tyson Foods, and JBS USA have

Showmanship

If we were to sum up in one word what showmanship is, it would be marketing. In order to market a product, you need to know every possible thing there is to know about that product. You have to be willing to realize the strengths, so you can expand on them, and then you have to be aware of the weaknesses, so you can correct or reduce the problems. showmanship - the ability to present something in an attractive manner. Showmen aim to display goods with tact in order to sell an object or a show. Companies producing drama and entertainment claim that displaying fairness is necessary. The skill of making an artistic performance distinctive, effective and appealing to an audience. We believe that showmanship begins at home. The amount of time you spend working with your animals will pay off in the show ring. Some things that you can do to improve your chances of doing wel are: At Home: Tie your calf with its head high in the show position for at least 3-5 hours a day. If you consider the amount of time that it takes to fit your calf and show it, then if you have the opportunity to be asked to come back for the championship, it will be at least 4-5 hours that this calf will have to be in position. If your calf is not accustomed to standing this long, then coming to the championship class, it will be lazy and want to lay down. It’s top will be sagging and its head will be hard to keep high enough to look its best. Next, while you are working with your calf at home, set it’s feet and encourage it to stand in the set up position. When you get to the show ring, it will walk into the show position and stand locked in. Practice using the show stick and walking your calf in the show stance. Have someone help you determine how you need to set the feet so your animal looks the best. Then have your helper take the halter so you can take a look for yourself, from the judges point of view. Always, always, always, lead your animals with their head high to get them to look the way you want them to. Whether you are going to the wash stall, or back to your stall, practice makes perfect. Watch someone lead your calf with the show halter on to determine what speed you need your animal to walk. This will allow you the opportunity to size the show halter and give them a feel for it. Play music in your barn so they are not startled by loud speakers and thus won’t get startled at the first show. While at the show: As soon as you step off the trailer, people start evaluating your calf and your program. If you have someone else set up your stall, wash, feed, clip, fit, and just generally take care of everything for you, people will know who does the work with the animal. While you are at the show you are marketing your calf. You will likely go into the ring one or two times, but don’t forget that there are many people in the barns that may want to buy the animal you are show-

20

Livestock Plus Inc.

ing, or if it is a bull, someone may want to buy semen someday. WIth his in mind, you need to have them clipped and looking good the duration of the show. Exercise is so important for your animal. It will keep them from getting stiff, will help their appetite, and will help them to be in control in the show ring. Show day, get up early. This will give you the time you need to get your animal washed, dried, fed, and lay down to relax a bit before the show. Watch a class before you enter into the show ring so that you can see how the judge is working the ring. This will also clue you in so so you know what to do when you get into the ring. Also, you will know who the judge is and who to pay attention to when you walk into the ring. First impressions are huge! Really, every class is showmanship. You always Cody and Miss Maine Aim Sue want to pay attention Grand Ch. Spring Heifer calf of the Open & to where you are Jr. Maine Anjou Show: American Royal 2013, going, your calf, and Grand Champion Heifer Calf at Aksarben 2013 the judge as much as safely possible. Make eye contact with the judge as much as possible. Answer questions while looking the judge in the eye. Speak clearly and confidently. Be prepared to answer questions, like birthdate, breeding, how many pounds of feed is your calf eating (not how many gallons or scoops), and what kind of feed you are feeding and what is the weight or rate of gain of your steer. Leave space when walking around the ring so that your animal can move out properly. Leave space when setting your calf behind or next to another. A good rule is a length of a show stick. Dress professionally and not in a distractive way. You are there to show the calf not yourself. Act professionally; after all, it is only one person’s opinion in the ring, but there are hundreds watching you outside the ring. Have respect for the judge. Show to win! If you go into the ring with the attitude that you are going to get beat, chances are you are going to. Enter into the ring with the attitude that you are going to win, that way you will try your hardest. If you have done the work and your homework, then you will have the much needed confidence it takes to be successful! DO YOUR BEST AND LET GOD DO THE REST! Have A Merry Christmas and A Prosperous New Year! See you on the show road, Chuck and Karen McCullough, McCullough Fitting Clinics If you have any questions feel free to call, Chuck McCullough 641-344-5566, Karen McCullough 641-344-5548.

News Release

IA Cattlemen Joining Together to Raise Funds for South Dakota Ranchers Impacted by October Snow Storm AMES, IOWA – Iowa cattle producers are being challenged to join together and raise funds for the South Dakota ranchers who lost cattle and infrastructure during the untimely blizzards that hit the western part of that state in early October. Current government estimates are that 20,000 to 30,000 cattle died in the storm. The challenge began with the Shelby County Cattlemen’s Association. In a letter to other Iowa cattlemen’s groups, the group said “The damage from that storm to the whole of the cattle industry will be long-lived. Our local county cattlemen’s organization here in Shelby County has decided to make a

donation to the relief efforts for the South Dakota producers. We have decided to donate the value of one bred heifer. While that may seem significant, we recognize that it is small in scope compared to the losses those producers have gone through. “We would like to challenge the rest of the Iowa county cattlemen’s organizations to join us in making a donation to help out our neighbors, be it the value of a bred heifer or a feeder calf, or any amount that can be donated.” The collection of Iowa donations from cattle producers is being coordinated by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. The foundation is working with the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association and will send 100% of the Iowa dollars to the South Dakota Rancher Relief Fund. “Our county cattlemen’s organizations are strong, and when we lock arms together, we can get things done,” said Tim Graeve, president of the Shelby County group. Donations will culminate during the Iowa Cattle Industry Convention in Altoona, Dec. 9-11. Payments from individuals, businesses and county groups should be made out to the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation with a notation that the money is for the South Dakota ranchers. Those donations can be mailed to Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation, 2055 Ironwood Ct., Ames, IA 50014. You can call ICF with questions and donations at 515296-2266. n
