This is one of the best purebred Simmental bulls I have ever seen. I am 82 years old and have seen as many bulls as anyone in the country. I am one of the fussiest bull buyers in America and a bull has to be about perfect for me to buy him. This fancy bull is so deep ribbed, square hipped, full of muscle and red meat. He is big topped, wide based, clean fronted, and clean sheathed. He is very sound on his feet and legs and carries himself well. He has a topnotch set of EPD’s and is a HERD BULL SUPREME. Out of a 1st calf heifer and the great WS Step Up X27. We paid $52,000, he’s one bull that was worth it!

MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings Isn’t this weather great? And yes, I know, some of you are in need of moisture, and we are hoping and praying that you get it before the full fledged crop season is here. I darn sure don’t want to jinx the good weather, but I can remember getting snow the first part of April, we’ll hope not this year. I am going to go off on a little different twist to a food article this month. I happened to be home for a couple of days, and one of my kids decided that if it was going to be this nice, it was time for ol’ Mike to put together our first official “Wiener Fest” for 2015. Let me explain a “Wiener Fest.” It is what happens when one of my kids decides it’s time for a family get together and then they con me into grilling up a quick supper. Quick means wieners on the grill (hot dogs to normal people) and thus “Wiener Fest.” My daughters, daughterin-law, and wife usually prepare something to go with the wieners to make it look like a real supper. Since the first wiener fest of 2015 was the brainchild of Mandi and Dixie, they had to take the

brunt of providing special sides. My request was apple crisp with whipped cream, potato chips and a tomato beer. Everything worked except the whipped cream, they said I had to have ice cream instead. The jury is still out on that, I like cool whip. It’s kinda heartwarming to see everybody in the family just chilling, visiting, and solving the world’s problems. I really enjoy the grandkids playing in the yard and every one of them trying and a few succeeding to climb the tree in my front yard. They also have that chalk that they draw on the driveway with. At one point, I had my daughter-in-law laying on the driveway and grandkids tracing around her. It almost looked like a crime scene with a few Iowa State Cyclone logos mixed in. A great time was had by all, and even though it wasn’t a steak, this ol’ grandpa and grandma enjoyed every minute of it. I’m hoping for lots more “Wiener Fests” this summer. It seems like I have been on the road for a month straight. Sales are going great, I love visiting with old friends and meeting new ones. I look forward to seeing you down the road. As always, PLEASE keep our military and their families in your thoughts and prayers. God Bless America!

FYI

Hawkeye Breeders Service

“Service with Integrity” by Carrie Horman

“Service with Integrity” is the motto that David Jensen’s grandfather set in 1962 and is the motto Hawkeye Breeders Service, Inc. still follows today. David and Brandy Jensen, third generation owners of Hawkeye Breeders Service, Inc. are forever grateful to David’s grandparents, Lloyd and Doris Jungmann, and parents, Carl and Gloria Jensen, for building a reputable business and the opportunity to continue operating the family business. Hawkeye Breeders Service Inc. was started after Lloyd Jungmann got frustrated while working with the Iowa Breeder’s Cooperative when the technology of freezing bovine semen was being developed. He tried to convince them that freezing was the way to move towards. He wrote his “I quit” letter, and left it lying on the desk, little did Doris know that he did not want to send it just yet and put the letter in the mail. From that point, Hawkeye Breeders Services, Inc. was started in central Des Moines in a two-stall garage. Lloyd started by traveling to customer’s farms to collect from their bulls. He brought the samples back to his lab in Des Moines to process until the logistics of the job got too far to travel. In the early 1980’s, Lloyd was approached by the Brown Swiss Association to export semen to Switzerland. He had a vision for what this opportunity could do for his business and the industry. It was an opportunity that he could not pass up. He knew, in order to be able to export bull semen internationally; he would need a location that would allow him to spread out to meet export regulations. In 1982, Lloyd built his first facility. It was south of the current facility outside of Adel, Iowa with two barns and an isolation barn in the form of an old grain bin. Over the years, the business has grown to what it is today with over 20 barns for housing bulls. Hawkeye Breeders Service, Inc. is the largest bull custom-collection facility in the United States while exporting semen to all over the world except China due to strict regulations. The Jensen family has stayed with just working with the cattle because of rules, regulations, protocols, health restrictions and disease control and also the ability to specialize to cater to their customers. David Jensen’s grandfather and father had the philosophy that they wanted to do one thing great verses several things good. There are several things that separate Hawkeye Breeders Service, but only two things really stand out in David Jensen’s mind; the ability to export semen all over the world and the fact that they do not own any bulls, they are strictly a service provider to their customers. They have been in the business a long time with long-standing history in the business. They are committed to the industry while have created a family atmosphere with their customers and employees. With having the ability to export both dairy and beef semen internationally, along comes several challenges the Jensen family must face. The regulations from not only the U.S., but the other countries they are exporting to have strict regulations of semen coming into their country and are a constant battle. “Technology in the U.S. is huge and in uprising countries, everyone wants the U.S. genetics. This helps keep our business thriving, but also keeps us on our toes with the current restrictions that we must follow,” says David.

20

Livestock Plus Inc.

When asked, “What do you enjoy the most about the business,” David and Brandy both say they love working with families as their customers and their employees as one big family. Their customers and employees are the reason Hawkeye Breeders Service has been in business so long and what will continue to keep the business going. “Our customers and employees are a fantastic group to work with and we wouldn’t be anywhere without them,” Brandy said. “We love our customers and love our employees.” David and Brandy would like to express their honor to Livestock Plus, Inc. for the opportunity of this article in this month’s issue. They want to thank Mike Sorenson along with his family and crew for their passion and dedication to the livestock industry. David and Brandy invite everyone to come out for a tour of their facility and the opportunity to get to know about your operation. They are excited to learn about how they can help you grow your business and see it succeed. Look up Hawkeye Breeders Service, Inc. on their website, hawkeyebreeders.com or call the office 515.993.4711. The Jensen’s along with their family and employees thank you for all the years of continuous support. David & Brandy Jensen, Owners/Operators and Travis Snyder, Head Herdsman n

The Barn That Built Me by Jennifer Carrico

Editor’s note: Reprinted with permission from High Plains Journal.

Miranda Lambert sings “The House that Built Me.” I love that song about how she wants to go in the house she grew up in to find her roots again. I am lucky enough to be able to go into the barn that built me every day to be reminded of my agricultural roots. The barn on my family farm is probably my favorite place in all the world. I’ve learned so much in that old wooden barn. I often just sit and wonder when my ancestors built that work of art if they stopped to think about what it would mean to future generations. My great grandfather used the barn for housing dairy cows that were milked twice a day by hand to provide milk, butter and other goodies for the family. They also had draft horses, Belgians, which were used in the field to help plow the ground, make hay and harvest crops. In the center of the barn is a hay mow. While we use the bale-avator to get small square bales into the barn, they used the pulley system, which has remnants hanging above. I’ve spent many times just sitting on the hay thinking about whatever is on my mind. It’s my getaway and a place with so many memories as well as a place where I’m at peace with the world. That hay mow also served as a playground when I was growing up. We often played war or superheroes, and the rope that hangs was our escape route, jumping from the straw pile to the hay pile. It was also a shooting range with the BB gun to shoot down sparrows with barn cats awaiting our kill. Those were the same barn cats who liked to play hide and seek with us in the haystack when it came to their kittens. I became quite the seeker and always loved playing with the little furballs. That’s something my children love to do as well. Besides the fun times, our hay mow was a place of work and as I grew up—making hay and straw was always one of the many summer jobs. Before I was strong enough to lift the bales, I would push them off the pile to whomever was working on the hay rack, sending it in the barn to be stacked. I always enjoyed the treat of riding the last bale into the barn. My least favorite job was always scooping manure. When I was little, I had to use the 4-tong pitchfork, but when I was strong enough, I graduated to the 12-tong fork, which I still prefer to use. The cattle have always been a key part of the barn that built me. Spring is my favorite time of year; watching new calves enter the world. And then summer is a great time too, when I would work on show calves. That continued into fall, and then it was time to wean calves and select the show calves for the coming year. The barn was always a good

30

place to get in from the winter weather. I am glad to be able to pass these memories and farming skills on to my children, who do many of the same jobs as I have for most of my life. What did all this teach me? I learned how to work hard, because that’s what farmers do. From the very first of my ancestors to work in that barn, to my children who are the sixth generation of my family to be raised on the farm, we all have been taught what it takes to raise animals and families on the farm. Work ethic, job completion, honesty, integrity, appreciation of life, compassion, respect, dependability and responsibility are just some of the characteristics that come to mind when thinking of being raised on a farm. These are the characteristics employers look for when hiring, that coaches admire in their athletes and that I appreciate in friendships. I am blessed to say my children are the sixth generation in my family to be raised on our farm and in that barn. They are learning many of the same skills that have been passed down from generation to generation. It’s a legacy. It’s the barn that built me. Start with the End Goal in Mind: Show cattle nutrition is all about results

Whether you’re just getting started with show cattle or you’ve been showing for years, you know how important it is to have a nutrition program that will help make your animals look their best. You want an animal to look great throughout the year, but even more important, is being at their best at a future date – show day. For heifers, there might be multiple target show dates, and for steers there may only be one, but regardless of how many dates you’re targeting, your animal’s nutrition program needs to be developed with the end goal in mind. “We need to be thinking about the results we want,” says Dr. Chad Zehnder, cattle consultant with Purina Animal Nutrition. “What does the steer weigh currently? What do we want him to weigh on show day? With heifers it’s not much different, but you may have multiple target dates to keep in mind.”

Two-step approach Zehnder recommends a two-step approach for developing a nutrition program: STEP 1: Determine the nutrition the animal has been receiving. Whether the animal is purchased or home raised, you need to know exactly what they’ve been getting and how much they were getting to smoothly transition those cattle to a more individualized show nutrition program. If cattle haven’t been on much feed, or if they’re newly weaned, you can transition them to a sound starter program for 21-28 days, prior to starting them on their show feed program. STEP 2: Determine the end goal and build them up to a feeding program to match. “This is where building a program gets more individualized. Not every animal is going to have the same program,” says Zehnder. “For instance, a steer in good condition, on the heavier side, might need 2 pounds of gain per day. But, a smaller, lighter steer might need a program with higher energy to gain 3 pounds per day.”

36

Another factor to consider is how much time you have until the show. A targeted show date in early summer means you’ll have less time to get your animal in the right condition versus a show in late summer, so you’ll need to adjust the daily intake and roughage level to reflect the amount of time you have to put condition on the animal.

Building a balanced, consistent program Any show nutrition program should include a balanced feed with adequate amounts of protein, energy, and fiber or roughage. It’s also key to make sure that the animal has an adequate amount of mineral and vitamin supplementation, and that nutrients are from quality sources. Zehnder emphasizes the importance of highly palatable feeds and access to clean, fresh water. “We need to be able to keep cattle on feed consistently whether that’s at home or at the show. You can have the best feeding program in the world, but if your animals won’t eat it, it’s not doing you any good,” says Zehnder. “Palatability is a must have in a nutrition program.” Honor® Show Chow® Ambassador Kirk Stierwalt agrees. “Good cattle deserve good feed,” says Stierwalt. “You have to get ahold of the most consistent product you can when it comes to nutrition. Any time your animal goes off feed or isn’t getting adequate nutrients is a step in the wrong direction. A consistent, palatable product will help you get the results you need.” “We also can’t underestimate the importance of water. Water drives intake, especially in the summer months, so we need to make sure calves have access to clean, fresh water,” adds Zehnder.

Avoid taking drastic measures While a feeding program can be developed on paper, it is of critical importance to monitor the appearance of your animal on a regular basis.

Livestock Plus Inc.

April 2015

“Condition and weight should be monitored at least monthly when you’re more than 3 months away from the show, and as you close in on your show date we need to be monitoring appearance and weights on a bi-weekly or weekly basis,” says Zehnder. “We need to know how much those animals are actually gaining,” says Zehnder. “Monitoring monthly or even more frequently, we can adjust their feed program accordingly without having to take drastic measures.” It takes approximately 45-60 days for nutrition to make a true change in appearance on an animal according to Zehnder. He adds that if you’re trying to make a change in less than 30 days, it will be a struggle. “An animal may need more rib shape, or maybe a little more fat, and you need to dig into the toolbox of products out there to get an animal what it needs,” adds Stierwalt. “There are very few instances where everything goes according to plan with weight gain, so we need to constantly monitor and adjust for optimal results.”

Re-evaluating your program Zehnder encourages cattle exhibitors to evaluate their show nutrition program regularly, especially if you’re not seeing the results you want in the show ring. “Sometimes we need to ask ourselves if what we’re doing is actually working,” says Zehnder. “What are you currently feeding? Why are you feeding it? Has it been working? What could you change?” “We sometimes do things because ‘that’s the way we’ve always done it’. But there are times, especially when you’re not seeing results, when it’s important to reevaluate.” No matter what your end goal is, a balanced nutrition program is a key ingredient for success. Creating or re-evaluating a program can be intimidating, but the potential end results in the show ring may be well worth your while. ........................................................ FYI

Nichols Cryo-Genetics, Inc. “Living the Dream”

by Carrie Horman IOWA, where there are ‘Fields of Opportunities’ and where a young couple had a dream. Their legacy mentor also had a dream to pass his empire business onto a young married couple who shared the same dream and passion. Jay and Dani Steenhoek are no strangers to the cattle industry and their special ability of collecting and producing proven quality bovine semen. Jay and Dani are the owners of Nichols Cryo Genetics, Inc. now located in Maxwell, Iowa. This couple is “Just Living the Dream” a quote taken from the late Marvin Nichols. Marvin Nichols was not only a renowned cattleman, but looked up to by many within the cattle industry. While Jay was in college at Iowa State University earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Studies, he did his internship with Marvin and soon after graduation went to work full-time at Nichols Cryo Genetics, Ankeny, Iowa, as the Herdsman. In a short period of time, the friendship grew strong and the mentoring that Marvin had given to Jay would be treasured memories for years to come. The Steenhoek’s met in 2004 at the Iowa State Fair while enjoying an evening at the infamous Stockman’s Inn. They married in the fall of 2005 and were then approached by Marvin and Janet Nichols a week later about the purchase of the Nichols’ beloved business. An on-site bovine semen collection facility located on the Nichols farmstead. Taking them up on the offer, after talking it over with each other, family and friends, Jay and Dani decided to jump in with both feet. They both knew what was important to them and that was keeping the Nichols Cryo Genetics, Inc. name and the legacy of Marvin and Janet’s reputation of producing proven quality semen and a home of contented bulls. There are many opportunities that get handed to you in a lifetime and Jay and Dani felt this was a special one that they needed to take and RISK everything they had or should say didn’t have. Nichols Cryo Genetics Inc., as a whole, is able to accept change and adapt to the many different trends, demands and changes the cattle industry has endured. Jay and Dani purchased land outside of Maxwell, Iowa. They built a new facility and have expanded their business, keeping in mind what their customers would want and what would be the safest for their employees and bulls. They are extremely excited and

proud of the new facility they have built together. They cordially invite any and all who want to tour the new facility. Nichols Cryo Genetics, Inc. or NCG provides custom on-site semen collection, analysis, storage and shipping of quality bovine semen. NCG is a member of the NAAB and is CSS certified. NCG personnel can offer the very best in comfort, care and quality of your herd sire and provides exceptional customer service with superior quality semen. This is accomplished by their ability to oversee each step of the process to ensure the utmost in quality semen your sire can produce. “The growth NCG is experiencing has been worth all the challenges” says Jay. “We have experienced some growing pains, but we wouldn’t trade it for anything.” Jay and Dani are horrible about “just shutting off” after business hours. They do not work on regular business hours, its 24/7 in this industry. If someone is dropping off a bull at 3am they are answering the phone and out there to help unload. Some of their best discussions are over a morning shuffle of getting their children, Chesney and Coy, going in the morning, on the weekends, or at night after the kids are in bed. While it’s great that we can run our business 24/7 if need be, they still know their priorities. The Steenhoek’s say they do not live a life of glamour; they are very down to earth people, who are raising their family on the passion they share and that is Proven Quality Semen and taking care of their customer’s bulls. Their customers are valued each and every one. Their knowledgeable staff value and share that same passion along with superior customer service. It is the cornerstone to their family-owned business. Jay and Dani would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of their past, present and future clients. They would also like to thank The Sorensen Family and staff for their dedication to the industry and for this opportunity of being featured in this month’s Livestock Plus Inc. Feel free to look them up on their website nicholscryogenetics. com or call 515.967.5311. The Steenhoek’s along with their staff can’t thank everyone enough for all of your support. Performance READ BELOW HOW. • Sullivan’s TURBO America’s #1 Livestock Fan • Nothing matches the Turbo for Air POWER! The Turbo pushes air 5,560 feet per minute at an incredible 1,740 RPMs and an industry leading 8,453 CFM’s. This is 22% faster and harder than the other livestock fans. Keeping your livestock cool depends on providing a push of high velocity air power to your animal.

Dominant Dominant Motor Motor Performance Performance

• The Dominant Motor Performance ... We have over-engineered the Turbo motor for added performance. The premium Nidec-Emerson 1/2 HP sealed ball bearing motor features a very important component, a 10% larger internal stator and rotor ‘stack’ for more horse power than standard 1/2 HP motors. This extra ‘stack’ powers it to run faster than any other livestock fan that we know of. As an added benefit, the Turbo motor runs 11% cooler than competitors 1/2 HP motors, this allows cooler air output from the Turbo.

First, I want to ask all of you with “funny” kid stories to please submit them to me! I have to say I enjoy looking at this world through kids’ eyes. So, as long as they are pretty “G” rated I would absolutely love to share them. I may even have some cool LPI swag for the best submissions!!! Before my kid stories, I want to thank my friend, Jennifer Carrico, for making this cool print for us! She is so darn talented in her writing and with her photography. This print is incredibly special to us because it is of our babies here at Rohrig Yorks & Show Pigs and wowza does the quote speak to us! This last month Tucker got to attend his first Stag at the Williamson Legion Hall and their main course was Rocky Mountain Oysters! You’ll have to ask him about the details but all I know is I got a snapchat of a tooth in one of those lovely delicacies! Eeeek!!! Now he asks constantly when the next one will be and it won’t be for a few months! Taylor, I think, completely surprised her pediatrician by chattering non-stop about checking heat with the boar and the fact that her Valentine wasn’t in heat but Beulah was in heat because she was sitting on her back. Now picture that with her talking in her little Minnie Mouse voice and 100 mph! Her doctor’s eyes got big and he looked to me! Wow, I didn’t know which part to shushhh her on! We had to explain that she was talking about their show pigs from last spring and he started laughing and didn’t stop laughing while walking out the door. I have to say I am so absolutely proud of all of our “FARM KIDS!” I know it startles people, but they are learning so very much from an industry that feeds the world and that is just awesome! Again, send me those “funny kid stories” I know y’all have them! I also want to remind people to submit your cool pictures for our PHOTOGRAPHY contest on the website!!! www.livestockplusinc.com Prizes will be happening! Keep our nation and our military in your prayers always! Travel safe and let us know if we can assist you with any advertising or finding anything in particular! REMEMBER, we will be starting the Show Calf Producer maps this next issue!
