Mike Sorensen ~ Sales Cell: 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Isn’t this weather kinda like a yo-yo? We have been in the most beautiful sunshine, dry roads, the streams and rivers are running, and ponds are filling, and then to the most miserable sleet, snow, and blowing snow. I guess we are in the Midwest it just ain’t always perfect, but wouldn’t be anywhere else. Don’t know any better. Dixie and I were on a run this last week for about 5 days, and on our last day and last sale of this trip we landed in Ottumwa, Iowa. We had some time to kill so we decided to have a mid afternoon lunch/ supper. We landed at Applebee’s. Neither one of us was really ready for a large meal, but those menus have a way of getting your eyes to outsmart your mind and stomach. I ordered the Bourbon Street Steak smothered in onions with little red potatoes, and Dixie ordered a hamburger and fries. In the menu it said my steak would be jazzed up with special Cajun seasoning which usually scares me a little, but I

GOMER BULLS For Sale Carl Newbrough 573-473-2544

was assured that it wasn’t too spicy. While waiting for our meal we had some pretty exotic drinks, Dixie had mango iced tea and I had strawberry iced tea, kind of a different drink, but pretty good. I could hear my meal coming from behind me, it was sizzling on a cast iron platter. It was deadly, that steak was plum deadly, the tators were great, and the onions set it off perfectly. Dixie ’s hamburger looked to be one of those really good ones that was handmade and grilled on a grill, not a preformed and microwaved slab of…. well, I better just quit before I say something not nice. I guess if you’re in Ottumwa, Iowa and need a pretty darn good meal, give the Applebee’s on the west side of town a try. Before you leave you gotta have a shooter and no its not a drink. They had what they call a chocolate mouse shooter which I devoured, and Dixie had a hot fudge sundae shooter. I’m guessing that these are not on anybody’s diet but they sure are good. Thanks to Kindra our waitress for dealing with all my questions and doing a great job. Applebee’s made a believer out of me. Hope everybody is having a great calving season. Travel safe. Keep our Veterans, Military folks and their families in your thoughts and prayers. God Bless!

P.S. NOTICE to our valued customers. We will be combining our May and June issues. If you have any questions please give one of our staff a call. Thanks for getting your May and June ads to us by April 15, 2013, and thanks again for advertising with us!

We invite your consideration of a bull that we feel has a much high impact potential as any young Simmental sire we have ever been involved with. Loaded Up is one of the most physically impressive bulls we have ever seen with major muscle shape, skeletal width, and overall mass. He combines that substance with incredible flexibility and perfect feet & legs. Werning Cattle Co. would like to thank Janssen Farms and Larry Simmons Farms for their $105,000 investment in 1/2 interest of Loaded Up.

To order Semen or to view Loaded Up in person contact any of the owners.

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things by Evan Rayl

A Hereford bull, named C Miles McKee 2103 ET, set a new price record on February 25th by selling for $600,000 at the Colyer Hereford Sale in Idaho. He was lead bull in Colyer’s Champion Pen at the 2013 National Western Show and Grand Champion at Fort Worth. The same report says the previous Guinness World Record was set back in 1981 when a Hereford bull sold for $301,000. Don’t know where this fits as far as records are concerned, but just four days later a third interest and no possession in an Angus bull named “Denver” sold for $340.000 at the Express Sale on March 1st. He was the lead bull in the Denver Champion Carload at the 2013 National Western Show. In addition, going back to 1984, the Angus bull “Hi Voltage” sold privately for $1.5 million to Robert Steele, Leatherstocking Farm, Easton, NY. Hi Voltage was Reserve Grand at the National Western as a calf and also as a yearling, then completed his career as a two year old by being the Grand Champion at the same show. Apparently, either Guinness didn’t keep records of such things back then or private sales don’t count. You cannot escape the responsbility of tomorrow by evading it today. A Southeast Iowa farmer has come up with the idea to feed his cows sawdust to help beat the high cost of cattle feed. Bob Batey, 85, of Mount Pleasant, says his 50 cows devour the sawdust mixture he feeds them. He got the idea back in the 1970s when he noticed cows eating sawdust that had washed into their pasture from a nearby paper mill, Batey said. He has discovered a way to treat and cook sawdust that results in a digestible feed that his cows seem to like. “Mixed with corn, vitamins, minerals and a few other ingredients, the mixture has a nutritional value equivalent to grass hay,” Batey said. His veterinarian Tara Wellman-Gerdes of West Point confirmed Batey’s cows are healthy. “They are a happy bunch of cows,” she said of the herd of Angus and Charolais cows, who are expecting calves in March and April. No man is good enough to govern another man without that other’s consent. A diesel refinery will be built in southwestern North Dakota, according to an announcement by Governor Jack Dairymple. MDU Resources and Indiana based Calumet Specialty Products Partners have formed a joint venture, Dakota Prairie Refining, to build and operate the refinery capable of processing 20,000 barrels of Bakken crude oil per day. The refinery’s design and engineering work are in the final stages and construction may begin as soon as this spring. The plant will be four miles west of Dickinson. This project will be built entirely by the private sector and will employ approximately 100 people. Cost of the plant will be between $280 and $300 million.

Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character give him power. A farmer has reported one of his cows has been shot and processed in his Lyon County, Kansas pasture. Thieves took the meat and head in the middle of the night. Kansas Livestock Assn. is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. Three Missouri men are charged with felony stealing after they misrepresented cattle they sold on Craig’s List. Two are in jail and the third is out on bail. A Texas man stole 61 head of cattle from his employer, sold them in a local sale barn where he also worked. Later he was found and arrested in Montana. Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association Special Ranger James Bond led the investigation. A northeast Kansas woman who said she embezzled $817,000 from the credit union where she worked to save the family farm has been sentenced to three years in prison and pay restitution. Not likely she’ll ever have money to repay. Her attorney said she was a conscientious employee for nearly 30 years before she and her husband filed for bankruptcy and had no money to feed their cattle. The probability that we may fail in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just. The coldest winter in decades is causing blizzards in northern China and threatens electric power supplies in the south where the government is not used to dealing with such freezing temperatures. About 180,000 cattle have died in the north while hundreds of emergency shelters have opened in southern China to help people who do not have adequate housing or heat to survive the extreme cold. The National Meteorological Center reiterated that southern China will be under heavier than normal snow, rain and freezing temperatures for the next several days, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency. Shelters equipped with quilts, coats, and food have opened in Hefei, capital of Anhui province. If you would win a man to your cause, first convince him that you are his sincere friend. All of the above quotes are from Abraham Lincoln, our 16th President. South Dakota Stockgrowers have joined several other groups and individuals in filing a motion to prevent the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in its efforts to stop the humane slaughter of unwanted and unusable horses at a New Mexico slaughtering facility. Valley Meats, Roswell, NM has been trying to open its slaughter facility since the last horse slaughter facility closed in 2007 when Congress banned the USDA from funding the federally required inspectors at the facilities. Funding has been restored and and Valley Meats has been trying to open its facilities ever since, but the USDA has refused to provide final inspection services for horse slaughter. Currently, unusable and unwanted horses are currently being transported long distances to Canada and Mexico. This has created a burden for producers as these animals have no market value, and are increasingly dying, starving or being abandoned at taxpayer expense. n

Important Information for Cow

- Will a Long, Difficult Delivery of a Calf Affect Rebreeding of the Cow? Herd Owners

In addition to being the greatest cause of baby calf mortality, calving difficulty markedly reduces reproductive performance during the next breeding season. Cattle suffering from calving difficulty have been reported (Brinks, et al. 1973) to have pregnancy rates decreased by 14 percent and those that did become pregnant to calve 13 days later at the next calving.

Results from a Montana study (Doornbos, et al., 1984) showed that heifers receiving assistance in early stage 2 of parturition returned to heat earlier in the post-calving period and had higher pregnancy rates than heifers receiving traditionally accepted obstetric assistance. In this study, heifers were either assisted about one hour after the fetal membranes (water bag) appeared (EARLY) or were assisted only if calving was not completed within two hours of the appearance of the water bag (LATE). Heifers that were allowed to endure a prolonged labor (LATE) had a 17 percent lower rate of cycling at the start of the next breeding season. In addition, the rebreeding percentage was 20 percent lower than the counterparts (EARLY) that were given assistance in the first hour of labor. First calf heifers should deliver the calf in about one hour. The starting time is the first appearance of the water bag and ends with complete delivery of the calf. Mature cowsthat have calved previously should proceed much faster and should deliver the calf in about a half hour. Always check to be certain that cervical dilation has been completed, before you start to pull the calf. If you are uncertain about whether cervical dilation has taken place or if the calf is in a deliverable position, call your veterinarian immediately. Prolonged deliveries of baby calves (in excess of 1.5 or 2 hours) often result in weakened calves and reduced rebreeding performance in young cows! Thanks to Glenn Selk, Emeritus Extension Animal Scientist, Oklahoma State University for this report. Note: You could have up to 37 percent of your heifers late or open at the end of the second breeding season, if you don’t help a heifer to calve within1 an hour of appearance of the water bag. ER n

Well, it’s a little bittersweet, we are back from the Ohio Beef Expo. Another great year, and even more great people/friends! Tucker came out with me this year and had a heck of time leaving when OBE was over! Maybe I should back up. On the trip out, Tucker and I were joined by Nicole Rathbun and Bailey Core. It was quite entertaining, starting with Nicole shoving all of our suitcases in the back and telling me to look away while she attempted to close the trunk with her entire body! A little nervous that the trunk would pop open at some point!! Nicole was kind enough to drive on the way out while I attempted to “work” but ended up either singing to loud music or making fun of Bailey and Tucker in the back playing on his LeapPad or discussing facts from one of Tucker’s science books. Nicole deemed the backseat the smart kids, and the front seat were the “fun” kids! We had a ball! During the sales and shows we had quite the assistance in distributing magazines by the Courtney Family. Traci, Mike, Austin & Alex all took arm loads of magazines up to the show ring and sale rings for us. Alex and Tucker became fast friends! Thank you so much! Also, thank you to Kiley Osborn for helping us Sunday getting the magazines out and helping us pack up! I wish I could name each and every one of you that stops by because each person/conversation means so much to us! What a great state and wonderful people! As always Sam Sutherly and the whole crew deserves a big thank you! Also, my girl, Steph Sindel, makes our stay entertaining to say the least! On a more serious note, I would like to ask everyone to take a moment to say a prayer for one of my dear friends, Estee (Walters)

Nenow. Estee and her family have had to deal with something we all dread, her five and half month old little girl, Alaina, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. It has metastasized to her bone marrow and bones in the skull. In a recent update Estee said that prayers are working!! I wish I could think of some awesome Bible verse to share, but I’m counting on the amazing livestock family that I have seen rally around those we care about to wrap your prayers around this family. I know I strongly believe in the power of prayer and they have a tough road ahead. In closing, keep our military past and present along with the direction of our nation in your prayers as well! “I think if I've learned anything about friendship, it's to hang in, stay connected, fight for them, and let them fight for you. Don't walk away, don't be distracted, don't be too busy or tired, don't take them for granted. Friends are part of the glue that holds life and faith together. Powerful stuff.” - Jon Katz
