MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com
Greetings, Where did the summer go? Seems like Dixie and I have been on a run ever since we declared we were on vacation, and we never left on vacation. Yes, I know my English teachers and Justin Stout will give me crap over that last statement. It seems I have spent more time at Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield and Mercy Hospital in Des Moines than most of the doctors in those towns. I think we are all out of the hospital now and doing well. I want to personally and publically thank, the doctors, the nursing staff, the EMT staff, and all the way to the cleaning staff of the Adair County Memorial Hospital. These folks have gone above and beyond for my family and we appreciate it. It is great to have this kind of compassion for patients and their families in our community. God bless our local hospital!! My food review this month came on an invite to look at one of the Freedom Rocks that my son painted in Sully Iowa, Jasper County. While he was painting in Sully, Bubba said, “Dad, you have to come eat at this little café across from the rock.” He went on to say that these people make everything themselves. The bread, potatoes, pies, etc. Can you tell what generation my son grew up in? What really amazed me is when he said that they use real potatoes. When I grew up, that was the only option. Well, as usual in my family, we got a late start on the trip. So we called to see if these folks would stay open until mid afternoon when we could get there. Luckily, they agreed to do that. I really wanted to try some of the items on the menu, but being late, I didn’t want to make them create something from scratch. So, I just had the special of Swiss steak, real potatoes, and a veggie. Let’s just say I could eat at the Coffee Cup Café every day. I will be back to order off the menu. Last, and certainly not least, the pie. As Bubba would say it, “This is real pie, they made it from scratch.” As I ate a Reese’s peanut butter cup piece of pie, with real merangue (and
4
there is a difference) on top, the owner told me the crust was made with real lard that they get from the locker and then rendered. Robin & Darin Morrant, are the owners and the people that make the real food at the Coffee Cup Café. They do a great job. It comes highly recommended from this ol’ fluffy guy and the Freedom Rock Artist. Here are some of the reviews that the Coffee Cup Café has received. • Road Food by Michael and Jane Stern: Featuring our pie • National Public Radio: Pies to Try • KCCI Channel 8: Home Cooked Meals and Pies • WOI Channel 5: Pie-Making Dream Team • Lance Armstrong: Makes a visit for coconut cream pie during RAGBRAI 2006 • Bicycling Magazine: January 2007 - A feature on our pies • Des Moines Register: Identified as one of their “100 Places to Eat Before You Die” • 500 Best Places to Eat Before It’s Too Late, by Michael and Jane Stern • KCCI Channel 8: Cruisin’ for Comfort Food • Featured in Our Iowa Magazine • USA Today: Top 10 Places in the US for Pie • Seriouseats.com: Best Pancakes in the USA • KCCI Channel 8: Voted Best Breakfast in Iowa and now, • Livestock Plus “The publication for Cowboys and Kids, ”Best real food” It is a great place to eat and visit while on the “OFFICIAL” “Freedom Rock Tour”. Good things are happening in the "Greetings" continued on page 34

Now that we are past the 4th of July, many farm folks are worried it will stop raining like it did last year. We had good rains until July, last year, then it didn’t rain again the rest of the year. As a result, crop yields were poor, pasture was short, and winter feed was scarce. My farming partner, Kevin Sothman says his father always said, “If it rains on Easter, it will rain for 7 Sundays afterward.” I’ve been keeping track this year. So far, its rained eleven “weekends” since Easter. I hope it keeps it up. The strength of a nation derives from the integrity of the home. Elsewhere in this Livestock Plus you will read about an experiment where feed efficient heifers later became feed efficient cows. This test involved 511 females in a five year trial at the University of Illinois. Borderline heifers were eliminated, cutting the number to 366. It showed that most low intake heifers became low intake cows, most middle intake heifers became middle intake cows, and most high intake heifers became high intake cows. In a much smaller test (54 bulls) at the Warner Bull Test Station with our feed efficient bull, Over Achiever (2.76 pounds of feed per pound of gain), involving two of his maternal brothers and 9 of his sons, all but two were in the top 24 for a 70 day test. Don’t think those two got the memo. It looks like feed efficient tests will have a fairly high accuracy. Geneticists are saying the accuracy will be about .40 to .45. They also point out only a couple other genetic measures are this high. Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.
COMMENTARY
A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things by Evan Rayl
When Mike arranged for almost a two month break between Livestock Plus issues this summer, I don’t believe he had any idea how much time he and I were going to be spending, hanging around hospitals this summer. I will leave it to Mike to relate how much time he was at hospitals with immediate family members. At this point everything is going well with the Sorensen family and I sure hope it stays that way. In our family, Shirley was having an acid problem with her digestive system because the flap at the bottom of her esophagus wasn’t working well. Plus, she had Barrett Cells around the bottom of the esophagus which are likely to turn into cancer, if acid and bile keep coming up. Along the way, Mayo doctors ordered a number of tests, over several months time, to make sure they were headed the right direction. Finally, an extremely talented surgeon operating through five openings an inch long performed what he called a “text book” surgery. Then two nurses (one a female & one a male) each solved serious problems for Shirley in the days after surgery. Thanks to everyone involved with her surgery at Mayo. Their surgeons have operated on Shirley and I four times now. It is certainly the place to go if you question what the local hospitals can do for you. She is recovering from this surgery quite well. Then, by the time you will have read this, Dr. Johnson at Wolfe Clinic will perform a cornea transplant on Shirley’s left eye. Her vision has deteriorated in both eyes the past few months, enough to restrict her driving. We are hoping this surgery goes as well as the other one.

Heredity is a splendid phenomenon that relieves us of responsibility for our shortcomings.
This year, the freeze brands we have done, turned out better than ever before. We only changed one thing. In the container we use to put the brands in while branding, instead of putting two inches of ice and 2 inches of 99% alcohol in the bottom of the container, we increased the depth of dry ice and 99% alcohol to a strong 3 inches. Why did we do this? We accidentally broke up too much ice! This allowed us to bury the brands deeper into the ice and alcohol while they were not actually being used. Most everywhere there was at least and inch of ice and alcohol over the top of the brands. It must have kept the brands colder because the brands are really good. Another change we are thinking of making this coming year, we will try discontinuing spraying a mist of alcohol on the brand every 10 seconds while it is being held on. This should eliminate run-down marks from extra alcohol where there are closed circles on the brands. Plus the colder irons should give us a good edge on the brands, without spraying the mist. Families break up when people take hints you don’t intend and miss hints you do intend. This was the 40th year that we have freeze branded our cattle. Its been several years and we have made several changes in the way we freeze brand. Since the last printing of the article “Freeze Branding Cattle,” I have made changes to it. The article will run in next months issue of Livestock Plus, so be sure to check it out. Keep your eyes wide open before marriage, half shut afterwards. Big news in the Embryo Transfer World. ntrexon, a leader in synthetic biology has acquired Trans Ova Genetics, Sioux Center, IA, a provider of bovine reproductive technologies. Trans Ova will continue under the current management team headed by Dr. David Faber. The past five years, Trans Ova has doubled in size. Trans Ova will receive $60 million in cash, $30 million in Intrexon stock, and $20 million in deferred payments. Last year, Trans Ova generated income of $63.3 million and a net income of $4.87 million. These numbers make me wonder if Intrexon is going to want to double volume again in the next five years and ramp up capacity to take care of retail stores by the end of the year. n

Fetal Programming may Have Lifelong Effects on Cattle
begins. Before a calf even hits the ground, that animal may be predestined for a lifetime of greatness or mediocrity, thanks to a phenomenon called “fetal programming.” Though there are environmental and nutritional factors that will play a role in that animal’s life, by birth, much of a calf’s lifetime health and performance potential already are determined. And that’s not just thanks to the genetics it inherited from both sire and dam. A lot has to do with the dam’s nutrition during pregnancy, too. Fetal programming, or the impact of fetal development on long-term performance, was initially explored in human medicine. Now, animal science researchers are learning more about the lifelong effects on cattle that can be traced back to their fetal development. Because 75 percent of fetal growth in calves occurs during the last two months of gestation, it once was thought that reduced maternal nutrition earlier in pregnancy was not harmful to the fetus. But consider that, in the first three months after conception, the following are developed in the fetus: • Muscle fibers • Limbs • Ovaries and testicles • The rumen, reticulum and omasum • Critical organs including the pancreas, liver, lungs, brain and kidneys.1 As gestation progresses, all of these organs continue to grow and develop, with some being completely formed prior to birth. For example, muscle fibers do not increase in number after birth2 – whatever muscle growth potential a calf has already is decided before it takes its first meal. And the sites for intramuscular fat accumulation and marbling formation also are created during fetal development. If dams are undernourished, organ development of the fetus will take precedence over skeletal muscle development. So, while muscle is one of the most critical factors in economical cattle production, it is the first thing to suffer if maternal nutrition is compromised. That’s why a steady plane of nutrition for dams throughout pregnancy is so important. Can you imagine a human medical doctor advising a pregnant woman to steadily lose weight throughout her pregnancy? Yet that’s exactly what we often do with our pregnant beef cows. A growing body of research is starting to show that there are no “doovers” in fetal development. Among recent findings in studies looking at fetal programming and development are: • Steers from cows nutritionally restricted during gestation had reduced body weight and carcass weight at 30 months of age compared to steers from cows fed on a steady plane of nutrition.3 • Marbling scores decreased in steers from under-nourished dams compared to those from dams that were fed 100 percent of NRC

Cattle, the new $8 corn of agriculture!!
This is a tagline I’ve been using for almost a year now. The above article on “Sustained® Nutrition” has created a buzz in the cattle nutrition world. I am fortunate to be a seedstock producer myself and I work for a research-based nutrition company, Purina Animal Nutrition LLC. That allows me to work with customers who are adapting this technology to their operations all across the Upper Midwest. Why are producers utilizing Purina’s Sustained® Nutrition products in Iowa? There are less pasture acres with higher rent costs, therefore, there is the need for increased stocking rates and better utilization of the existing forage base. Consider that in the last 2 years of drought maximizing your full performance and profit potential can be a challenge, but you see the need to maximize your cattle’s full genetic potential. Our producers utilizing their “year round” Sustained® Nutrition programs are telling me that they running more cow units on less acres (in some cases cheaper than renting more pasture), experiencing low total annual cow supplementation costs and have heavier weaning weights. Those same early adopters tell me that reproductively, they can measure better conception rates, increased BCS of cows which should help with longevity and performance of future replacements. In a nutshell, truly maximizing the full genetic potential of their cattle operations is their goal. by John Maday, Managing Editor, Drovers Cattle Network High feed costs in recent years have driven growing interest in feed efficiency in cattle and the potential for genetic selection to improve efficiency. At the same time, advancements in technology have allowed more accurate measurement of individual feed intake, providing a means for comparing feed efficiency among groups of cattle. However, while these systems collect individual intake data on cattle in confinement, measures of intake and efficiency in pasture cattle remain elusive. Current tests typically rely on systems such as Grow Safe bunks, which use radio-frequency readers on feedbunks to capture the identification of each animal as it feeds, linked with scales under each bunk to record the actual amount of feed each animal consumes. Combined with regular measurements of animal weights, this provides data for calculating measures of feed efficiency such as feed-to-gain ratio, residual feed intake (RFI) or residual gain. During the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Conference last week, University of Illinois animal scientist Dan Shike, PhD, explained that feed efficiency is relatively easy to measure in cattle that are gaining weight, such as young bulls, heifers or feedlot steers. In mature cows though, most intake energy goes to maintenance and other functions such as gestation and lactation, rather than weight gain. Feed efficiency still varies though, with some cows requiring more or less feed intake, relative to mature weight, to function and maintain body condition, than other cows. More efficient cows can better maintain body condition and fertility, particularly in limited-feed range environments, compared with cows with higher maintenance requirements. So, while researchers have measured intake and efficiency in growing heifers, and found considerable variability, questions remain as to how efficiency at that stage translates to efficiency as mature cows. To pursue that question, Shike and his team conducted a five-year trial, beginning with 511 Angus and Simmental-Angus crossbred heifers. They initially measured individual intake in the heifers using a Grow Safe system, and identified low-, medium- and high-efficiency groups based on RFI. The selected 366 replacement heifers from the original group and put them into a typical cow-calf production system. Following calving, they brought the two-year-old females back into the Grow Safe system for 14-day tests at 60 days and 240 days post-partum, feeding them a ration that mimicked forage in a grazing setting. They found the animals that were in the low-intake group as heifers continued to have lower intake compared to the medium and high groups as two-year-olds. At the same time, they also found no significant differences in breed-back rates or calf weaning weights. Calf birth weights were slightly lower in the low-intake females, as was the average age of the heifer at calving. The researchers concluded that in this trial, feed efficiency in heifers translated to feed efficiency in mature cows, and had little effect on reproductive efficiency. This work, Shike says, could help researchers incorporate more accurate EPDs for feed efficiency into selection indices. ■

ONE Light Birth Weights: 90 per cent of our bulls are suitable for heifers. TWO Rapid Growth: The heaviest yearling bull ever raised here was 1661 pounds. The heaviest yearling bull ever used here was GC Weightlifter 823, who still holds the test station record at 1710 pounds from 20 years ago! THREE High Quality Carcasses: Customer had 38 of 41 fed cattle make CAB. Many customers regularly sell over 70% CAB finished cattle. We have used the high accuracy Stouffer Ultrasound System for 25 years. FOUR Feed Efficiency: Three bull crops averaged 4.25 pounds of feed per pound of gain (over 150 bulls). The two top bulls only needed 2.64 and 2.76 pounds of feed per pound of gain. FIVE Convenience Traits: GOOD STRUCTURE VERY DOCILE FLESHING ABILITY GOOD FEET & LEGS CLEAN SHEATHS LONGEVITY DAUGHTERS WITH GOOD UDDERS AND “JUST RIGHT” MILKING ABILITY SIX Show Ring Confirmation: The last bull shown was 2nd in class to the Grand Champion in Denver. The next to last heifer shown was 2nd in class to a $80,000 heifer in Denver The very last heifer ever shown won many Iowa Summer shows. She would have won more, but she was 10 years ahead of her time. The dam of Black Canyon. Dear Progressive Cattlemen: For the past 66 years I have been breeding Registered Angus Cattle for the producer who wants to make a profit in this business. For the past 39 years, we have been recording birth, weaning, and yearling weights. For the past 25 years, we have been taking ultrasound measurements, and for the past 4 years, we have been recording feed efficiency data on an official test. We have now tested over 200 bulls. The bulls, RAF KCC Over Achiever 106 (only 2.76# of feed needed per # of gain) and CSG Contact 2E (only 2.64# of feed needed per # of gain) are herd sires here, who have come out of these tests. ~ Evan Rayl

Cattleman’s Connection
“Never in My Wildest Dreams” by Kevin Sothman
We’re moved, but I wouldn’t say we’re settled. We’re still remodeling and unpacking. I can’t believe how much stuff a person accumulates over time! Well, what does everyone think about the cattle market? Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would see cattle bringing this kind of money!
I like to follow the video auctions on calves that are sold for fall delivery. Last month, on Superior’s Corn-Belt Classic there were several lots of calves from the Montana area for November delivery. Seven to seven hundred fifty pounders sold in the $2.15 range. That adds up to over $1,500 per head! Plus trucking to the feedlot increases the cost even more! As you know, my day job is selling feed. I’ve been sharing a grid with my customers. It shows the cost of gain based on the cost per ton of the feed and its conversion rate. I know most of us just look at the price per ton. But how well it’s converted plays a bigger part in what the cost of gain will be than price per ton—and cost of gain controls profit or loss. At current feed costs, the spread between the price per pound for calves and the cost of gain is wider than I have ever seen in my life! I’ve been telling producers it looks like a no brainer to creep feed and background our calves this year. Creep feed is meant to be a supplement to milk and grass—not a replacement to it. The ingredients you feed are what’s important. Some companies say calves need fiber in their diet. My response is - what are they standing in? If you have grass, they have all the fiber they need at a much cheaper cost! Studies show that we need to get energy into calves at an early age to increase marbling. The best way to do that is to get a high energy low fiber supplement to them now. The other statement I hear is if you want to increase marbling just feed them longer. That’s old school advice and it’s costly. The longer you feed a calf, the poorer its conversion rate becomes. Along with this comes higher cost of gain, plus more back and seam fat are added—which reduces yield grades from a possible two or three down to a four or five—reducing value and increasing costs even more! The farming industry has changed completely from when I was a kid! There’s new technology and improved ways to farm to improve production and control costs. We in the cattle industry need to do the same—use the new technology and improved ways to improve our production and control costs! ■

From the Tailgate, It has been one of those years of weather that we have to ask the question, what is next? The cold winter, wet spring and now a summer of wondering if I will ever have three or four days in a row to get my hay up. It is amazing to see that the farmers, ranchers, and all around livestock producers can weather the storms and keep on going. I know, by now, everyone’s 4-H and FFA kids have been to a number of spring shows, state field days, or their jr. national breed show. Now it is county fair time and as the summer winds down, off to the state fair. So you ask yourself, is the hard work that the kids do with the help of us parents worth it? I can only say what I say to my sons. Just because you may or may not get the blue ribbon or the champion at the end of the day, the work you have done is worth it. I know that it is hard to understand that if you don’t win your class or have a champion ribbon to bring home you didn’t get paid for your efforts. The only answer I have for that is that if you continue to work hard we all will have our day on top. If that means learning to be responsible for feeding and caring for animals, working with other people
who have a different ideas then yours or just knowing at the end of the day you gave everything you had, then in my mind, you are a WINNER. As I talk about hard work, respect for others, and 100% effort into everything you do every day, it brings me to what I really wanted to say in this month’s letter. The cattle world lost a gentleman that I had the utmost respect for, Mr. Robert Weaver of Weaver Angus Farms, Peoria IL. Early this July at the good old age of 90, Bob Weaver moved on to a better place. It is hard for me to write in words what Bob meant to me. I didn’t know much about Bob other than he was the owner of Weaver Angus Farms until I started to work with his show cattle in the mid to late 1980’s. As I got to know Bob, it wasn’t hard to see why he was so successful at everything he did. He was one of those guys that didn’t know a stranger. Every time you would talk to him, he was very interested in you. He also was one that gave 100% to everything he did, win or lose. With that, it was an honor to know Bob Weaver. If I only become half the gentlemen he was, I will have made it to the top. As always, it was good to see and talk to everyone in my travels this past two months. If anyone at LPI can help you with marketing your livestock, just call. Thank you for your time! Bruce

The summer seems to have flown by, but it has definitely been eventful. The most recent event in our lives is also the most exciting. The kids and I recently accepted a marriage proposal from Matt Rohrig. Matt is a thoughtful, kind and loving man and has introduced us to one of his loves...pigs. Tucker and Taylor have spent this spring and summer showing pigs across the state and I have become a show mom. We are blessed to have this man in our lives and look forward to introducing him to all of you. The Corndog Kickoff is one of those events in the summer that my entire family enjoys immensely!! It is an Iowa State Fair food grazing party to benefit fairground renovations. We all have our favorites and this year as soon as we walked in Tucker was OFF “grazing” in a frenzy and we were told we are just too slow! Cup of cookies, pork chop on a stick, snow cones, cotton candy, roast beef sundae, and the list keeps going! At the end of the auction there are fireworks and the Skyglide ride!! The kids look forward to it every year and now it holds an even more special meaning because after all of the festivities Matt popped the question!! As we were leaving the fairgrounds Tuck says “Wow, Matt, what are you going to do next year at Corndog Kickoff?” Guess it will be hard to top!! So, I have a place for you to stop and eat if you are in Southwest Iowa looking at cattle. Kramer’s Café in Orient, Iowa, has amazing burgers, even more amazing pork loins and mine and Tucker’s favorite the pepperjack cheeseballs!!! It’s just down the main street, ya can’ t miss it. Becky and Brad Kramer are the owners and you may even get to play with Miss Aubrey, their little girl that my kids just adore. Tucker requested that he have his birthday party at Kramer’s because he loves it that much. Stop in and tell ‘em Livestock Plus sent ya! The kiddos were very involved this year in the Iowa Swine Jackpot Series. What an outstanding group of people!! They were all very kind to my kids, welcomed them and made us feel like we had always been a part of their group. The kids worked on their gilts, learning how to feed, wash and sometimes nap with their girls! The families involved in the ISJS are pretty amazing. It didn’t matter who won, everyone was supportive! Tucker and I talked the other day how important the cattle and swine industries are to our family, how much we learn from them and how they truly feel like family. I would have to say my favorite was when Mom and Dad came down to Osceola to watch the kids show. It was driving Dad absolutely crazy that we weren’t getting the gilts ready an hour before show time! I have to mention my friend, Bob Brown, from Outlaw’s BBQ. I wrote about them in spring 2013 when I was at the Super 7 Pig Sale in Marshalltown. Wow, their baked beans, I swear, could be a meal alone. I can not forget to mention the pork loin that is moist and
perfect! We got to experience Outlaw’s BBQ again at the Grand Finale Swine Jackpot Show in Ames, Iowa. Bob kinda spoils me, even when they run out of something. So, a big “thank you” to Bob, Kyle and all who assisted in a great meal! I wish everyone luck at the county and state fairs!! Please keep our military in your hearts and prayers.
