A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things by Evan Rayl Youth organizations in America provide an important opportunity for young folks in this country to gain skills in citizenship, leadership, and responsibility. Some of the best known in the U.S.A. are Boy and Girl Scouts, 4-H, and Future Farmers of America (FFA), all with both boys and girls as members. 4-H has approximately 6.5 million members. Scouting has approximately 6.0 million members. FFA has fewer members (about 600,000) than the other two groups, primarily, because they are part of high school programs mostly in rural schools so young people are members of FFA for fewer years. All three groups can point toward numerous individuals who have been important leaders in America. As an example, for every 100 scouts, 4 will become Eagle Scouts, 3 will become pastors, and 65% will become college and university graduates. Plus, 26 of the first 29 astronauts in NASA’s program were Eagle scouts. The point I’m trying to make here, is that if your children or grandchildren are getting about old enough to be in one of the organizations mentioned above and you want to be real proud of your children when you are a senior citizen, it would be smart on your part if you got your children or grandchildren enrolled in one of these great organizations. Then, follow up by supporting their involvement in the activities of the organization. Opportunity---it may just knock once. Recently, 500 pound feeder steers have been in the area of $3.00 per pound. This reminds me of recent years when the corn market was in the 7 to 8 dollar range and producers were trying to do all they could to get a bigger crop. Now that it is cattle’s turn, producers need to do every thing they can to keep cattle healthy and gaining well. For example, never in history has it paid so well to creep feed and never in history has death loss been so costly. Least of all, we don’t need a big snow storm, such as the early snow storm in the Dakota’s last year. A few years ago, we had an early snow that if one could have flatted it out, would not have been much more than a quarter inch, but the wind blew 70 mph and the snow all ended up in the ditches. Our cows were in the cornstalks at the time and they were down behind a hill and below a terrace. They were in a good place except two of them that wondered away from the herd. We couldn’t find them anyplace. Finally, when melting came in the spring, I finally found them. There had been some melting and the water had run down the ditch about an eighth of a mile below the terrace. Where the water running down the ditch had melted the snow in the bottom of the ditch, there were eight legs showing below the snow. If I had any idea the wind was going to blow so much, I would have driven the cows into a lot, up by the buildings. This was not a big loss as snowstorms go, but it was

Especially, if the whole herd would have wondered down to the ditch. Opportunities are never lost - someone will take the ones you miss. Iowa State University will study the use of concrete for taller wind turbines. The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded the ISU Engineering College $1 million to study how high-strength concrete can be used to build taller wind turbine towers; a development that Sri Sritharan, the leader of the College of Engineering’s Wind Energy Initative, describes as something that will revolutionize the industry. Wind turbines are currently built using 80-meter steel towers but Srithiran says concrete towers can reach higher, providing energy companies with access to faster and steadier winds above 100 meters. He says they also increase the amount of time turbines are productive and can be produced and transported for less cost. Sritharan and former graduate student Grant Schmitz (with civil and masters engineering degrees) tested full-size tower segments last year with positive results. The tower technology, known as Hexcrete, uses precast and easily transportable components to build hexagon-shaped towers. Current steel towers can only be 14 feet in diameter and clear going under interstate bridges, which in turn limits their height. With the possible exception of the equator, everything begins somewhere. With cattle prices so high, farmers and ranchers are on the lookout for cattle thieves. In drought states like Texas and Oklahoma, the cost of feed got so high ranchers were forced to sell most of their stock. Now with feed prices back down this fall, ranchers are looking to rebuild their herds. A ranch, one hour south of Tulsa, Oklahoma, reported 19 head missing, which is just a few of the 1000 head on the ranch. Half of the missing cattle were branded and law enforcement located the ones with brands. The 31 year old woman selling them at an auction in Southern Oklahoma was caught and has since been sentenced to two years in jail. In another case, a young man stole cattle to pay his girlfriends rent. Reminds me of of a local thief, who said “My wife spent money and I had to get it back in the bank.” The sign on the door of opportunity says “push!” Winter didn’t have to come like it did this year. I never did hear how much the temperature dropped between one day and the next. On top of the quick drop in temperature, the cold is staying around a lot longer than the first spell usually lasts. The only good thing was there wasn’t much snow with this first cold spell, but the forecasters are saying there will be more coming. Anyway, I want to wish you and your family a safe and happy Christmas. I especially want to wish our troops overseas in harms way a safe Christmas. Pray for them every chance you get. Wars are stupid, but there isn’t much we can do about that. But we can’t let the bad guys have their way. n

FYI

The Start of a New Era of Cattle Improvement - Cattle Performance Testing

by Gerald Schmidt and Evan Rayl, Iowa State Ag Students & Roommates

Published in the “Iowa Agriculturalist”, the campus ag magazine in 1957. “Production Testing” is the new way to put more profit into your beef herd. Beef cattle breeders and producers now have available greatly improved methods for improvement in the production ability and efficiency of their cattle. It pays off with bigger, higher quality calves and puts more money in the farmers pocket. Announcement of a beef testing program for Iowa farmers has been made recently by R. M. McWillians, Iowa State College Animal Husbandman, in a publication AH-743 “Keep Production Records-Improve beef Cattle in Iowa.” McWilliams says, “The purpose of this program is to help the farmer select replacements from the top producers and cull poor producers from the herd, with the long run purpose of increasing the average gaining ability of the cattle. The first step was the discovery that efficiency in the use of feed and the ability to gain at the rapid or slow-rate is highly heritable. The second step was the discovery that the ability of a bull to sire fast efficiently gaining calves could be fairly well measured by his own record under controlled feeding conditions. These fundamentals, together with continued use of selection for acceptable beef conformation and for milking and “mothering” ability in the cows form the basis for an effective beef cattle production testing program. “Fundamentally,” said McWilliams, “My program is simply a matter of measuring performance of individual animals by keeping systematic records. The program fits commercial and purebred herds alike.” In its briefest form it involves: 1. Taking the weaning weights of calves. 2. Culling the poorest cows. 3. Selecting the best replacement females. 4. Using production tested bulls. McWilliams contends that keeping of records and closer attention to the cow herd and individuals within the herd will result in increased breeding efficiency, increased calf crop percentage, and increased breeding efficiency, increased calf crop percentage, and increased general health and well-being of the herd. “Production testing follows the same old selection principles, however, it is recognized that it takes more of an experienced eye in selecting herd replacements, “ he says. This is how McWilliams explains his program: By selecting replacements from the fastest gaining stock with the best type and conformation, the farmer is able to improve the carcass quality and meatiness of slaughter cattle. Slaughter and carcass grades are determined by conformation, finish and quality with conformation an important factor in the purchase or sales prices of both slaughter and feeder cattle. Research indicates that conformation and rates of gain in beef cattle are independently inherited. Therefore, rapid-gaining individuals can be found in all grades of cattle and slow and inefficientgaining cattle within the same grades. However, because of the relationship of body conformation to carcass grid, both conformation and rate of gain must be given nearly equal consideration in a sound beef cattle production testing program. A good characteristic of profitable beef cattle is the ability to grow and gain rapidly, either on grass or in the feedlot. Cattle that make rapid gains are usually relatively efficient in the use of feed. Large individual differences in gain have been noted with experimental cattle in farm feedlots. A considerable part of this difference is due to heredity. Heritability of gain has been found to be

16

relatively high. Experience would indicate that a farmer can not, through visual observation alone, be at all accurate in the selection of fast -gaining cattle. The easiest solution is to keep weight records because they provide information that can be obtained in no other way. The milking ability of the dam has more influence than any one one factor on the weaning weight of her calf. This character is heritable. Research indicates that the influence of inheritance on weaning weights is about 30%. Heavy milkers regularly produce heavy calves. Seventy per cent of the weaning weight of calves is the result of environmental conditions such as quality and quantity of feed, disease in the herd, temperature, climate, and good or bad management by the farmer. A cow need not be kept just because her calf has a high weaning weight. Calves must be sound and have good body conformation as well. The length of the productive life of the cow greatly influences overhead costs. This along with a high per cent calf crop is one of the most important factors in a profitable breeding operation. The bull plays a more important part than the female in increasing the ability in the herd, because he sires many calves while a cow produces only one calf per year. Much of the potential improvement will be lost if the bull Is selected on body type and conformation alone, with no attention given to his production record. Commercial cowmen will find it advantageous to purchase bulls of acceptable type whose production records are above average. Generally, it is recommended that calves be weaned as near to 190 days as possible to make accurate use of the table of age adjustment factors available from Iowa State College. Weaning calves at this age will give a more accurate picture of the cow’s productive ability than if calves are weaned and weighed at an older age after they access to supplementary feeds. Calves from young cows will not gain as fast nor will they be as heavy at weaning time as calves from older cows. Therefore to make the best comparison between cows, it is necessary to adjust to the age of the mother. Research also indicates that bull calves will gain more rapidly and will be heavier at weaning time than steer calves. Similarly steer calves will be heavier than heifer calves at weaning time. This information indicates that a more accurate comparison between cows is obtained if some adjustment for the sex of the calf is made. Fortunately, production testing records for beef cattle may be simple and done without much trouble, depending on the objectives of the individual cattlemen. McWilliams believes the following items are essential in keeping production testing records on any farm regardless, whether the farmer is interested in purebred or commercial production. 1. Identify the cows. Tattoo, ear tag, neck chains or brand will do. 2 Keep a record of calving dates. 3. Weigh calves at weaning time, which should be as near to 190 days as possible. 4. And at the same time score caves on weaning weights and body type and conformation. Record gains after weaning. This applies mainly to purebred breeders who sell bulls and heifers, however it can be also used by the commercial man to obtain further information on replacement heifers. A farmer who has put all of these points into practice is E. A. Plager of Grundy Center, Iowa. Plager has production tested and has kept permanent records on 100 cows for the last two years. His 1956 records show that calves from the top one-third producing cows in the herd averaged about 100 pounds more per head at weaning than did calves from the low one-third producers. The range of the producing ability between the top cow and the poorest producing cow was much greater than this. Plager also checked the siring ability of his three herd bulls. Calves from two bulls had similar weight gains, but offspring of the third bull averaged 55 pounds lighter at weaning time. Plager feeds out all of his own calves. Feeding records on his

1955 calf crop indicated that the two bulls who sired the calves that were heaviest at weaning time, also sired the fastest gaining calves in the feedlot. Rate of gain records from the feeding period have provided an added check on performance of the bulls. ”Using these production records, Plager will be able to select his future herd sires and replacement heifers, and to cull poor producers now in the herd,” says McWilliams.” Mc Williams summarizes his program by saying, “Production testing has done away with the old guessing game the farmer plays each year as he selects replacements for his beef herd Still better, it’s inexpensive, effective and goes a long way toward determining the chance for profit from the farmer’s beef herd.” Dr. L. N. Hazel, professor of Animal Husbandry has this to say about the Beef Cattle Production Testing Program. “This new tool of production testing offers the same opportunities in beef cattle production as the production testing methods which have been applied so efficiently in dairy cattle and poultry breeding and more recently in swine” He further says, Beef Cattle breeders will not only feel the necessity of adopting these new practices, but will actually come to like them as they become familiar with them and recognize that their selections are more exact and accurate and breeding improvement is greater with their use.” n

COMMENTARY

Cattleman’s Connection “Going Forward” by Kevin Sothman

Recently, I attended the National Angus Convention in Kansas City. They had several very good speakers on the agenda and the overall theme was “Going Forward.” One of the speakers cautioned everyone to not sit back and become complacent - after all, Angus is the largest cattle registry in the world. He went on to say we have three different ways to approach problems. One is the traditional, “what we’ve always done in the past.” Two is conventional, “what worked last time.” The third is innovational, “what might work” thinking outside the box. Depending on the situation, all three can be a good way to solve a problem. The obstacle comes when the traditionalist won’t let the innovative try some new ways of doing things. Because of my upbringing, I tend to fall into the innovative category. Don’t get me wrong, I like my traditions - Christmas, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, apple pie and so on, but when we get stuck doing things the way we’ve always done them, there’s no way to make improvements. What could the definition of insanity be? “Doing something the same way you always have but expecting a different outcome.” To stay ahead of the competition you have to be innovative! Sometimes that means seeing a problem before it becomes one. What about your cattle operation? Are you trying some innovative things or are you doing things because, “That’s the way I’ve always done it?” As I’m out meeting people and I hear the last statement, I ask them, “are you still farming the way your father did?” To which I usually get an embarrassed or a deer in the headlights look. It also tells me about their operation. If they continue to do things the way they always have, they’ll soon be left behind and will no longer be competitive. What about your business? What have you done different in the past year, or even the last five years? On one of the panels at the Angus Convention, there was an eighty year old rancher who, ten years ago, implemented a plan to change his genetics. He started AI’ing his cows, retaining ownership into the feedlot and selling on the grid. He made the statement that he’s made improvement over the last ten years but he’s still not where he wants to be. I only hope I’ll be as innovative as he is when I’m EIGHTY YEARS OLD! Maybe that will depend on if I’m still around! One thing I’ve learned in my life is that to make innovative ideas work, it’s best to get input from other innovative people, then sit down and put together a plan. I have a refrigerator magnet that says “Impossible is just an opinion.” Don’t let the conventionalist and traditionalist deter you from thinking outside the box. As you may know by now, my father had a saying for everything. One of his sayings was, “either you’re going forward or you’re going backwards. You can never stay in one place.” What about you? Is your business going forward or backwards? If you have questions our family email address is sothman8@netins.net. Or give me a call 402-658-4877. n
