Mike Sorensen ~ Sales Cell: 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com
Greetings, Well, much to my dismay, summer vacation is over and its time to go back to work. I can say that Dixie and I had a great vacation and a really good summer. I got one of my bucket lists out of the way; I made it to Washington D.C., saw the monuments, the walls, lots of history, Arlington, Gettysburg, and a whole bunch of stuff that I would like to go back and take more time to see. I think if you want to see everything and do everything you should allow for at least one week in D.C. We had a great host while on vacation in Virginia, Joe Boddicker, and he was gracious enough to let Dixie and I and Ross Butler and Sandy stay in his home. He also acted as our tour guide in Washington D.C., Virginia, and West Virginia. One day Joe had to go to work so we all ventured out on our own and that is where the food story starts. Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, what a place! We headed down what I would call the main street. Let me tell you, when they made these streets they weren’t allowing for anything bigger than a Model T. It was a neat little town. The Coach House Grill and Bar is the place. This picture is the back entrance. The back entrance was really pretty cool with birds, ground squirrels, and tables just set randomly between trees with a cobblestone floor that just followed the lay of the land. You actually had to be kind of careful walking on the uneven terrain. It would have been a great place for a few totties, dinner, and to relax but of course the clouds in the sky that day

looked like we needed to be inside. The inside of this place was kind of unique also as there were three floors. We ate on the top floor, the one that you walked out onto main street from. It was basically like a remodeled boarding house. On to the food, as most of you know I’m not a big sandwich fan, but when we have no choice a fluffy guy like me needs food so you do what you have to do. A Black N’ Bleu Steakhouse Burger is what I came up with. Again, as most of you know I am not a big cheese fan. This burger came covered in bleu cheese, onion, and pickle all on top of what seemed to be about a half-pound burger between a homemade bun. This burger was one of those handmade burgers, you know the kind that you use to get at about every bar in the country, that the juice and grease would squeeze out every time you took a bite. Well, you take a burger this size, slap on Bleu Cheese, slice of onion, and a hand full of pickles, add a little ketchup and a fluffy guy with a hunger pain going on, it spells messy. I got around it all and it was deadly, in fact, I would really like to have another one as I write this. Anyway, I did get out of there with most of the food either in my belly or on the platter they served it on. This was probably the best sandwich I have ever eaten. The sad part of it is, I’m pretty sure that none of you or even I will ever get back to this place in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. This was a great one. I’m not sure how summer got by me; I guess maybe I must have had a good time. Our County Fair is starting today and State Fair is around the corner. We wish all you exhibitors good luck with your fair projects. Please travel safe. Please don’t forget a prayer for our service folks that are still fighting for our freedoms.

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things by Evan Rayl
Finally, the proposed New Mexico horse slaughterhouse has been cleared on all the government regulations and is about to become reality. Valley Meat was held up by first one government regulation and then another, but now it has cleared all the roadblocks and will start to operate shortly. At the time Valley Meat was released to operate, another plant at Sigourney, Iowa was announced, and yet another location in Missouri was mentioned without the town being announced. Meanwhile, the West is over run with wild horses with 36,000 running free and 36,000 being kept in corrals and fed at our expense. In addition, the whole country is over run with way too many old and worthless horses under private ownership. At least these horses will have some value now with overseas markets (mainly France) available. Perhaps the thousands of horses currently being poorly cared for, could be replaced by beef cows where there is an extreme shortage with cow numbers at the same low level as clear back in 1952. This affair has been politics at its very worst.
our lives, its just remarkable what these people have done.” Cowboy Logic: “Most people spend money they don’t have to buy things they don’t need just to impress people they don’t like.” One of the major criticisms of the current USDA Quality Grade System is the relative inconsistency among the various grades---the variability resulting from human error by USDA graders. However, new camera technology removes subjectivity, and minimizes the potential for variability. To prove that perspective, the National Cattlemen’s Association recently commissioned a checkoff-funded study to investigate the relationships between consumer perception and marbling scores as determined by a camera-based system. The research was led by Daryl Tatum, Colorado State University professor of animal science. A chart showing increasing positive experience among the seven top quality grades with the following percentages:15-29-62-82-88-99-98. Tatum explains that, “Results of this recent study suggest that camera-based marbling scores very effectively categorize A-maturity beef carcasses according to differences in strip loin tenderness, flavor, and juiciness, and provide strong support for USDA’s recent implementation of camera-assisted quality grading. The transition to camera-assisted quality grading modernizes the 85-year-old beef grading system and improves the consistency and accuracy of quality grade determination.” Fortunately, women have a major flaw - they love Cowboys. Russia is currently the world’s largest cattle importer with an annual cost of $3 billion. The largest herd in the country has 60,000 cows. Their goal is to import enough cows from foreign countries, mainly the USA, to become beef independent. However, at the present time, U.S. Cattle are banned in the country because Russia doesn’t like our use of the feed additive ratopamine. So I assume they are buying cows from places like Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina to increase their numbers these days. They certainly picked a good time to increase numbers, when the USA is decreasing its cattle population. If only we’d stop trying to be happy, we could have a pretty good time.
Cowboy Logic: “Few women admit their age. Few men act theirs.” Speaking of rules, if you have a rig to haul livestock and it’s gross weight loaded is over 26,000 pounds and you travel over 150 miles from your place as-the-crow-flies, you need a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). Iowa seems to leading the midwest in enforcing this new rule, called MAP-21. It is a federal rule now and it will be coming to your state in due time. These are the phone numbers for a few nearby states where you can find out the rules for your state: Nebraska, 402-471-0105; Wisconsin, 608-267-9762; South Dakota, 605-773-4578; Illinois, 217-782-6629. The government seems to want to turn livestock owners into truckers. The longer I live, the more beautiful life becomes. Frank Lloyd Wright Make-A-Wish helped a young leukemia patient, do what he wanted, become a farmer. Joe Joe Charles, diagnosed with cancer at two and now five, has spent more than 120 days in hospitals receiving chemo, surgeries, and radiation. Joe Joe was granted his wish by the town of Waterloo, Illinois. He spent a day planting and fertilizing fields, gathering chicken eggs, holding baby pigs, and fishing. He was given a complete cowboy makeover, along with his twin brother. The boys got to ride in a stage coach in a parade, with students lining the streets and signs to the boys hanging on every corner and business sign. The exciting fact was the Charles family is from Kansas City, but the Waterloo community adopted Joe Joe and his family to make one special little boy’s dreams come true. Thomas Charles, Joe Joe’s dad said, “When a community who has no idea who you are and because they fell in love with a little child’s dream rolls out the red carpet and welcomes us in like the’ve known us all

With the purchase of Smithfield, China is now the World’s largest pork processor. In an interview with Chairman Wan Long, Chief Executive at Shuanghui, the world’s newest meat behemoth, temporarily shoving aside Brazil’s JBS, he said, “Our goal is to be the biggest in China, and the leading meat supplier in the World.” But being the largest pork supplier won’t get the job done. One needs to be in beef and chicken as well. China doesn’t have the resources to raise cattle on a large scale. In the chicken industry, China is has the most chickens in the world, but they also have a huge bird flu problem as well, which stifles exports. It is interesting to note, nearly half the Smithfield company is owned by American companies such as Goldman Sachs and New Horizon Capital, plus CDH Investments, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund. Continental Grain, owners of 6% of Smithfield quickly sold their shares for $32.88, under the $34 offered by Shuanghui, apparently to get out with out crediting the buyers. Charles Grassley, Republican Senator from Iowa said, “No one can deny the unsafe tactics used by some Chinese food companies. And to have a Chinese food company controlling a major U.S. meat supplier, without shareholder accountability, is a bit concerning.” n

News Release
Putney Announces Retirement from Blue Ribbon Foundation John Putney, Executive Director of The Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation since its beginning in 1993, has announced his retirement effective March 2014. The Foundation has generated more than $95 million for improvements to the Fairgrounds facilities during its 20 years. Putney will remain on staff to transition his duties to Peter Cownie who will join the Foundation August 1. “I have been honored and grateful for the opportunity to help renovate and preserve this great institution for generations to come,” Putney said. “I am extremely happy that Peter Cownie has been selected as the new Executive Director of the Blue Ribbon Foundation.” Putney, a native of Gladbrook and an Iowa State University alum, has been an avid participant in the Iowa State Fair for many years as an exhibitor, President of the Sale of Champions, and Beef Superintendent. However, his greatest legacy will be spearheading the campaign to renovate and restore the historic Iowa State Fairgrounds. His efforts have culminated in the renovation and construction of 30 Fairgrounds facilities, ranging from wiring and roofing to the complete reconstruction of the Varied Industries Building and the construction of the Jacobson Exhibition Center.

Cooler Keeping 101
Some people may think that the traditional way of growing hair is a lot of work, and it would be much easier if they only had a cooler. Although a cooler may promote more hair growth, it doesn’t mean it is any less work. Showing cattle and being competitive is a lot of work, it doesn’t matter how you look at it. If you want to do well, you will have to work hard! Cody and our family have some tips on keeping cattle in a cooler. We know they work well and we will share them with you. It is essential to get up and have the cattle in the cooler before it gets very hot outside, so when the sun comes up, that is usually a key indicator that it is starting to warm up outside. It is time to head to the barn! 1. Get the cattle in the wash room and blow them out. 2. Wash them at least once to twice a week with soap, but everyday rinse with ICE cold water from a deep freeze with the use of a sump pump to draw the water out. 3. Blow the calf out until it is 3/4 dry in the cool room. 4. Brush, brush, brush! Spend at least 30 minutes brushing each calf and training the hair. We like to condition the hair with clean sheen mixed with hair stimulant and a little rag oil. Blow the calf the rest of the way dry and then use the roto brush on the leg and back hair. Only use the roto brush on dry hair. 5. This is a good time to work on showing the calf and setting them up. Work with the show stick and get them accustomed to

The Foundation began with the goal of raising money for the Fairgrounds’ deteriorating facilities. Along the way, Putney’s successful fundraising efforts have changed the face of the Fairgrounds. Projects like the Varied Industries Building built in 1911 and completely reconstructed from 2000-2002, set the new standard for Fairgrounds facilities. The fully-enclosed multi-use facility became the catalyst for numerous projects including the state-of-the-art Jacobson Exhibition Center and re-development of the southwest portion of the Fairgrounds. Iowa State Fair CEO/Manager Gary Slater said, “John Putney’s work not only renovated and constructed buildings; it also spurred new interest in the Fairgrounds as a rental facility and re-established the Iowa State Fair as one of the world’s must-see events.” Cownie joins the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation from Junior Achievement of Central Iowa where he served as President. He led the Des Moines nonprofit organization and its fundraising efforts for 5 1/2 years. In 2008, Cownie was elected to his first term in the Iowa House of Representatives and has since won re-election to his third term representing District 42 which includes portions of Polk and Warren Counties. The Des Moines native looks forward to his new role, “I want to thank John Putney for the unprecedented work he has done for the historic Iowa State Fairgrounds and the people of Iowa. His legacy leaves an indelible mark on the Fairgrounds for future generations of Fairgoers to enjoy, and I look forward to continuing his work.” The graduate of Dowling High School in West Des Moines and the University of Virginia received his Masters in Public Administration from Drake University. Cownie also volunteers and serves his community in numerous ways and chairs several foundations and boards. He and his wife Mary have one son. n standing still with their head up, like in class. 6. Feed grain and let the calf go. 7. Around noon come back and pull feed pans and fog calves with freezer water. Brush for 20 minutes each and blow them out. 8. Around 4:00 pm back into the wash room, rinse with freezer water and blow 3/4 dry in cooler. Condition the hair at least 3 times a week, with something like Mane and Tail. 9. Brush 30 minutes and blow the rest of the way dry. Roto brush the legs and back once they are all the way dry. Leave cattle stand with their heads tied up. 10. 7:00 pm come back to untie and feed grain. 11. It depends on the temp outside to when you turn out calves, we usually wait until 10:30 pm, spray them lightly with the clean sheen mixture, then turn them out dry, you may want to use a little fly spray also. 12. Make sure all pens are clean, wash room, and all manure lies. Spray with Sciezyme by FlexTran to neutralize the ammonia smell. Take out the wheelbarrow and dump it as far as possible away from the barn. This will detour flies from gathering and breeding in the barn. As it gets close to show day (about a week or more), start to turn your cooler temperature up to get them prepared to face the real world. Keep track of their weight once a week if they are a steer and adjust their feed ration to apply more or less gain to be on track for your target date. It is important to prepare them to come out, so they don’t go off feed and get sick. If you have a heifer this is important so she doesn’t abort her calf, if she is bred. We hope this will help you. Remember, this is just what we believe to work for us and our program. It also works for a few other very successful operations. Give it a try, it may work for you! We love to hear feed back and gather information to share with others, if you would like to share your opinion with us you can email or call! I hope everyone has been enjoying summer! It’s going way too fast because my baby will be starting school this year, so I’ve got mixed feelings! I’ll miss having my sidekick, big time! The other day someone asked her if she was excited to start school and she told them she wasn’t going. I was a bit surprised and asked her why. Taylor said, “Well Tucker said if I start school you won’t carry me any more!” We’ve had to have a few reassuring discussions and a couple with Tucker on his informational talks with his sister! In June, Shorthorn Junior Nationals were held in Des Moines, Iowa. Nate and Jenny Studer asked me to assist in judging the junior sales contest. Oh my gosh, I am so glad I did! Nicole Rathbun and myself had the Prospector II kids (ages 10-12). We were so impressed with these kids. to say the least! The Shorthorn breed should be very proud of their up and coming young producers. Heck, I was ready to buy a couple of heifers! A few of the teams brought us little gifts that tied into their presentations! It was so impressive and we just had a ball! Nicole’s sister, Corinn Berry, was our time keeper and we joked that we had a judge, judging the judges! I always have a lot of fun when I am with the Rathbun sisters! Here in the photo is one of the Indiana teams with Miller Smith, parents Neal & Jennifer Smith, and Aidan Raab, parents Kim and Robbie Raab. These boys brought us sashes and crowns so we would feel like royalty! Yep, they nailed that one with Nicole and I, we hated to take off the crowns when it was over! Hopefully everyone is state fair ready! We’ve got a crazy busy next few months with shows and sales! Let us know if there is anything in particular you are looking for this fall. Also, don’t hesitate to give one of our representatives a call if we can assist you in advertising that upcoming sale! I always close by asking everyone to “thank a veteran” and this time in addition I really liked this quote:
