Ready 2 Rumble was admired by many of those who are admired in the business in Denver and the Iowa Beef Expo. It is hard to build them this stout and keep them this sound and athletic on the move. Maine-Anjou breeders and Club Calf enthusiasts are planning on utilizing this 5/8 Maine Anjou to maximize profits. Ready 2 Rumble is a truly unique individual from a powerful Kirk Forsythe Donor. He has quickly become one of our most popular bulls in the Lautner Farms Lineup!

Greetings, It sure has been typical Iowa weather, colder than heck one day, spring like weather the next day, and then a mild blizzard the next day. As I write this, it sounds like we could be in the path of a big one in southern Iowa. I sure hope that the weather man is completely wrong this time because last I heard it was a 12 plus inch prediction. I guess we will take what comes and deal with it as always. I have a really good story, with a really sad ending. Approximately 25 miles from my house sits a really cool, huge log cabin restaurant called “The Naughty Pine.” I’m not sure why, but we just haven’t eaten there much. In fact, this would be the second time in my life that I have darkened the door. Maybe it’s just too close to home and when I get close I figure I just as well head on home. Anyway, I happened to be in Creston for a sale and an old friend of mine, Wendell Sollars, showed up and basically told me he was going to take me out for a steak. After checking in with Dixie, and getting the okay to go out for supper

without her, I agreed to let him buy me a steak. As most of you know, that was not a hard sell. Austin Brandt was also told he would be going with us. Arriving a pinch early, like around 5:30, we ordered an adult beverage and Austin insisted that we order onion rings for an appetizer. His comment was that they were deadly, and they were, but we didn’t need enough for a party of twenty. Basically, I was full of onion rings by the time I got my meal, but no we couldn’t quit with that, we had to fill up real full. I ordered a Certified Angus Bacon Wrapped Filet. I don’t care what breed it was because it was just flat out a good one. I also added some buttered steamed broccoli for the healthy side of this meal (or as close to health as that evening got). This place has atmosphere, plus Wendell and I had a great time reminiscing over old times. Austin learned lots, not sure any of it was good but he learned lots. This is a place you can just sit, sip, visit, and relax. The worst part of this story is that this place is going to shut the doors for good on March 30, 2013. This will be a very sad day for Creston and Union County Iowa. I ‘m betting Dixie and I will be heading to Creston for the last meal at The Naughty Pine before March 30. As I finish this up for the month, I am between the Iowa Winter Beef Expo and Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. To find out the results of these two programs go to www.livestockplusinc.com and click one of those events. As always if we can help you find the next great one give one of us a call. Please keep our service folks and their families in your prayers! GOD BLESS!!

was up 2 percent at 5.4 million head when analysts expected a small decline. The other news is that all cattle and calves in the United States the first of the year, 2013 totaled 89.3 head, 2 percent below a year ago and the lowest January 1st inventory since 1952. Of course, cattle numbers at this time are totally dependent on the weather. If it doesn’t rain some of the replacement heifers will end up in feedlots and cow numbers will fall again. Cattle prices are very favorable, but it doesn’t make any difference without moisture. Besides, other factors indicate fewer cattle the next couple of years. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 38.5 million are down 2 percent from a year ago, the lowest number since 1941. The 2012 calf crop as estimated at 34.3 million head, down 3 percent from a year ago, the smallest calf crop since 1949. It is exciting to see beef heifers as a percent of the total beef cow herd at a nearly 20-year high. If these percentages continue it would increase the beef supply that is currently so short. With the current beef shortage, producers have offset production declines by bringing heavier cattle to market. These heavier weights need to continue and even increase with the expected calf crops in 2013 and 2014. It’s always too early to quit. - Norman Vincent Peale

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things by Evan Rayl
Oklahoma State University has just announced a new website to give producers a comprehensive site to obtain up to date beef information for cattlemen and feeders. You can go to it by entering www.beefextension.com. It is a collaborative effort between the animal science and agricultural economics departments of the University. Iowa State University has a similar and much longer operating website you can go to www.iowabeefcenter.org with similar, yet varied information to assist with knowledge about similar subjects. Check both of these out. They have lots of useful information for cattlemen, much of which deals with current problems facing producers. Cultivate your character and your reputation will take care of itself. The new USDA beef cattle report is giving a slight hint of the cattle herd expansion. The number of beef replacement heifers

Most of us watched the Super Bowl and we all remember the thirty-some minute delay after half time when half the lights in the Super-dome went out, just after the 108 yard punt return by the Ravens. But do you remember the commercial just before the game started that highlighted the deceptive fund raising practices of the Humane Society of the U.S? The ad explained that only one penny of every dollar raised by HSUS actually goes toward the support of animal shelters. “Paw-Thetic,” was the catch-phrase. HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle responded on his blog that he thought the ad was a waste of cash. I think any effort to educate consumers about the fact that HSUS has consistently received a D grade for its lack of honestly and integrity in using donated funds to actually help animals was well worth it. Instead, HSUS is an animal rights organization focused on abolishing animal agriculture and eliminating meat, dairy, and eggs from the dinner table. Hopefully, viewers who saw the commercial followed up by checking out HumaneWatch.org and will think twice before donating to HSUS in the future. The eyes see only what the mind is able to comprehend. Sweden’s board of agriculture is recommending a tax aimed at reducing meat consumption, according to news reports. The Swedish board said voluntary actions by consumer and firms are probably not enough to each environmental and climate goals, and a meat tax at EU level could be the solution. “Regulation, environment taxes and subsidies can lead in the right direction. But it’s crucial that this is at an international level. Or else we risk moving the production somewhere else where the tax burden is lower, not where the production is sustainable,” according to what the Swedish Board of Agriculture spokeswoman said. Swedish meat consumption has increased by a third in the past 30 years and is higher than average for the European Union. With thinking like this, don’t expect me to be spending any time in Sweden! n

Living the Dream!
Our family was able to exhibit in Denver this past January, and it was such a great experience to be a part of something so legendary. This wasn’t our first time, but is was our first to have display bulls, and it was so wonderful to have all four of our children with us. While I was walking through the yards one day, I ran into a young lady from Canada and I greeted her, and asked her how her day was, she replied, “ Living The Drawing by CJ Brown Dream!” That comment instantly warped me back to my teen years and how I dreamed of someday showing and being part of this magical show. Wandering around the Yards and on the Hill, I was in awe of the quality of the great animals that were all gathered there. In every breed, you have to admire how they have been bred to exemplify the great strengths of their breed. Thinking back on my 4H days, my greatest threat was my neighbors who raised Registered Horned Herefords and we raised Registered Maine-Anjou cattle. Often their boys and I would go back and forth, defending our breeds, and discussing why our breed was so much better than the other. Our long bus ride provided us much time to discuss the subject. Later on in my twenties, I spent lots of time showing their Herefords, and gained a total respect for their choice in breeding these great cattle. I believe those boys came around, and decided that Maines were also a great breed. Although, we would still give each other a lot of digs about the other breed, we all gained a respect for other breeds. The show in Canada which was comparable to Denver was Agribition in Regina, SK. and if you ever have the opportunity to go and watch or display at this show, I will assure you, you will not be disappointed. I was very fortunate to be able to show for many great breeders in Canada. Whether it was a Galloway, Hereford, Maine , Tarentais, Charolais, Simmental, or any of the other great breeds, I can honestly say that I was privileged to show them. They all had great attributes in their own respect. Through these experiences, I was able to study and see what the breed

weaknesses were also. That is what any great producer needs to do to help the breed move forward. Not to be blind to the problems, but to breed to correct the problems. These big shows provide the perfect opportunity to see what is working, and what is not. The ride home from Denver was very long but it made me sit back and smile at the enthusiasum that this show has inspired a stir in my family. The conversation of plans being made and dreams being dreamed, what bulls they wanted to use and how to do things differently. Right from the young age of 4 year old Drew, to the old age of 18, Erin, a good time was had, a lot was learned, and they were ready to go back tomorrow, if they could. We made it home from Denver, Madison and Drew went straight to the toy box and started playing farm and County Fair, with the bulls they had to display... Tooo cute! We are so blessed to do what we do! Chuck and Karen McCullough, McCullough Fitting Clinics. If you have any questions feel free to call, Chuck McCullough 641-344-5566, Karen McCullough 641344-5548.

His grand dam also had a BR 9/94. • Up N Coming has an amazing amount of thickness and depth of rib, yet still has a great phenotypical look. Not all calving ease sires can say that!

Ohio Cattlemen’s Assn. Youth Raise $13,000 and Counting to Benefit Make-A-Wish® (SPRINGFIELD, OH) — The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association BEST Program for youth ages 8-21 years, along with generous donors, raised more than $13,000, surpassing the $8,000 goal, to benefit local youth through Make-A-Wish. Fifty youth led their decorated show calves before a panel of judges at the BEST Celebrity Showdown at the Clark County Cattle Battle on February 8, 2013, in Springfield, Ohio. The showdown kicked off with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Honorary Wish Child Alexis. Judging the show were NFL players and Ohio natives Justin Boren, offensive lineman for the Denver Broncos; Jim Cordle, offensive lineman for the New York Giants; and former OSU Buckeye linebacker, Zach Boren. Participants were encouraged to dress up their calves for the judges who had never attended a cattle show. The winner was awarded a special Seth Rogers Memorial Trophy, in memory of a local young man who was granted a wish and enjoyed working with cattle alongside his family. Through donations from family, friends, the community and members of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association, youth participating in the Celebrity Showdown nearly doubled the goal in money raised to help grant the wishes of local children battling life-threatening medical conditions. “We are excited to partner with the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association and are honored to be chosen as the charitable recipient this year for the BEST program,” said Development Officer Cathy DeLuca. “It is inspiring to see children in the community join together to help bring smiles to the faces of local Wish Children.” Incentive prizes will be awarded to the top fundraisers at the OCA BEST Program Banquet on May 11, 2013. Donations to Make-A-Wish are still being accepted until the awards banquet. All sponsors will be recognized at the banquet, and those donating more than $100 will receive special recognition. To donate, contact Stephanie Sindel, BEST Coordinator, at ssindel@ohiobeef.org or call 614-873-6736. The BEST Program would like to recognize its sponsoring partners for their support of Ohio’s youth: Bob Evans Farms, Farm Credit Mid-America, Green Oak Farms, Eby Trailer, the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, Burroughs Frazier Farms and Weaver Livestock. To learn more about the BEST Program, visit www.ohiocattle. org. For more information about Make-A-Wish®, please visit www. makeawishohio.org, call (877)206-9474 or Like Us on Facebook at mawohkyin.n

Paul Harvey Celebrates “The Farmer” by Evan Rayl
During the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl football game, while the winner of the game was far from settled, a two minute commercial played. It was sponsored by Dodge pickup truck, but the word “Dodge” was never heard, but a new Dodge pickup was on the screen for just a few moments. Next a familar voice is heard from a recording by Paul Harvey. While he was reading the text below, a very nice series of agricultural pictures was shown. So God Made a Farmer And on the eighth day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, “I need a caretaker.” So God made a farmer. God said, “I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, milk cows, work all day in the field, milk cows again, eat supper, then go to town and stay past midnight at a meeting of the school board.” So God made a farmer.

God said, “I need somebody willing to sit up all night with a newborn colt and watch it die, then dry his eyes and say, ’Maybe next year.’ I need somebody who can shape an ax handle from an ash tree, shoe a horse with hunk of car tire, who can make a harness out hay wire, feed sacks and shoe scraps. Who, during planting time and harvest season will finish his 40-hour week by Tuesday noon and then, paining from tractor

back, put in another 72 hours.” So God made the farmer. God said, “I need somebody strong enough to clear trees and heave bales, yet gentle enough to wean lambs and wean pigs and tend the pinkcomb pullets, who will stop his mower for an hour to splint the leg of a meadowlark.” It had to be somebody who’d plow deep and straight and not cut corners. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed, and brake, and disk, and plow, and plant, and tie the fleece and strain the milk. Somebody who’d bale a family together with the soft, strong bonds of sharing, who would laugh, and then sigh and then reply with smiling eyes when his son says that he wants to spend his life doing what Dad does. “So God made a farmer.” While the text is somewhat aged, as you will understand later, the principles brought forth still apply today. Once again a new Dodge truck appears briefly, but no sound. Then the commercial was over. Back to the football game. Paul Harvey died in 2009. He delivered this text at the Future Farmers of America National Convention in 1978. The text was orginally published as “a letter to the editor” in 1940. Thanks Dodge, all farmers and ranchers should thank you too. An extremely classy piece of work honoring people who work with the soil & livestock, as well as FFA. n

Thoughts About the Drought by Evan Rayl
A report from the National Climate Assessment recently released tells us we are experiencing global warming at a rate eight
times more than normal. While many buy into these reports, others do not. Actually, there are about as many experts on one side of this issue as there are on the other. Not to mention how all the rest of us feel. I have a chart in my office that shows the major drought periods from the time weather records have been kept until now. The chart shows small maps of each year during this period, showing the areas of drought each year. There are four three year periods of drought during these 126 years. They are: 1901-1903, 1934-1936, 1987-1989, and 2011-2013, if our

weather remains dry this year. These cycles of drought have not exactly been on a regular basis, but have alternated from 20 to 33 years for each cycle. With only four cycles to compare and if the variation in them means anything, I do not know, but I find it interesting. At least there are approximate cycles. I am told that farmers in far northern areas of the U. S. and even southern Canada raised good corn crops this past summer. If that continues for the next few years, I will buy into global warming. But if we have a normal summer this year or next, I don’t think so. Just yesterday, I had a good visit with a gentleman who managed a feed store in western Texas for the past several years, where they have experienced extreme drought the past two years. He quit that job last fall when he reached retirement age. He told me about the history of his several different customers and how they approached the situation when no rain came for the past two years. Those who are riding the situation out the best are those who cut their operations back first. Those folks got the best prices for their stock and most currently have little or no debt and no stock on hand. Those who were forced out of their operations bought too much high priced feed, kept their stock too long, and took low prices for thin stock in the end. He said it was just a guess on the part of those who are setting best right now. He said they played it safe, which turned out to be the right way to go, as things turned out right in that case, but at the same time they could have been totally wrong, if conditions were the opposite. We discussed registered breeders maintaining their genetic base. We decided those folks could maintain their base by keeping 6-12 cows and buy high priced feed to keep them or ship them to an area where the conditions are better and let others care for them on a short term basis. What farmers should do in the Midwest this year is a $64,000 question. Right now, cattle are high, feed is high, some wells have gone dry and some ponds are dry, and we have had very little rain. Just this week, second in February, we are getting some rain, but we need a lot more. Those who have rural water are better off than those who don’t, but even they will need rain before this spring for their grass and crops. While crop prices are high, they might be higher with a poor crop. Rental cost and crop expenses are very high, too. No two farmer’s situation is exactly the same. Good luck to everyone in the months ahead! n

Well, this last month my baby turned four and I have to say I’m not happy! I like having both of them at the ages where Mom is still cool and they really genuinely love everything about me. I think Tucker has been telling Taylor that she is getting too big because the night before her birthday she got tears in her eyes and asked if I would still be able to carry her the next day. Just love that it still matters! Needless to say, the next day the first thing she did was rush up to me to see if I could carry her. I may have teased her for a moment and pretended I couldn’t and she said, “I knew I grew so much last night!” It was funny but I did pick her up and got a huge sigh of relief and a great snuggle!! Iowa Beef Expo was great as always!!! Mindy and her entire crew do such a fantastic job! I know there are so many little details we all forget and take for granted! Joe Sweeney thank you for all the help throughout the week, I told you I’m not tech saavy! I know Dad always has some awesome food story that literally makes you hungry but, my best all week was definitely Pizza Hut. Thank you to everyone who stopped to chat, we appreciate your time! I also wanted to thank Mike and Kim Ehrsam again for the trips up and back to Greenfield each day of the first part of the week. You guys are great even though you threaten me with the sleeping pics! For some reason that car ride back makes Taylor and I extremely sleepy! I am so looking forward to the OHIO Beef Expo coming up March 15-17th! www.ohiobeefexpo.com Wishing all the exhibitors and consignors lots of luck! See you soon, Steph! Again, this year I am clerking during this session at the Capitol for Representative Brian Moore from Eastern Iowa. Taylor and I stopped in to drop something off and got a picture with a few of the representatives on the agriculture committee. In the picture is Representative Grassley, Representative Moore, me, Representative Steve Olson and Taylor in the chair. Not present is Representative Josh Byrnes. I hope you all notice the swine and boar goat ads in the magazine this month! We are hoping to expand on those areas as well as sheep. Please feel free to give us a call if you are interested in advertising rates! Keep our military and their families as well as our nation in your prayers. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. ~Winston Churchill Go Niners!! Heidi Sorensen • 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com
