MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings, What a weather yo-yo. Not sure how the rest of you take it, but this ol’ boy has trouble with 40 degrees on one day and then -16 degrees the next. I just got off the phone with Doug Giles from Millbrook, New York, and we think we have problems in the Midwest; this poor guy has frozen water lines and waste deep snow. Those folks in the eastern part of this country have my sympathies. The one thing we do have to look forward to is that every day that passes, we are one day closer to spring. The old saying, you can’t teach an old dog a new trick, comes into play for the nutrition part of this month’s article. As you all know, I have spent a long week in Des Moines at the Iowa Winter Beef Expo. When people ask me where to eat during the Beef Expo it’s a pretty easy answered question, “The Big Steer” in Altoona. It’s one of my favorite places to eat. The first night, I along with Dalton Lundy, Greg & Eileen Miller, Roger Allen, Larry Martin and Randi Kocher (and missing Cindy Martin) landed at “The Big Steer.” I have grown very fond of the filet that they prepare. It’s usually tender, juicy, and seasoned to a perfection. This trip was no exception. It was just as great as I remembered. I did have a slight problem, though. I think I ate there every night that I was at the expo last year and not once did they tell me that they had anything better than the best au gratin potatoes I have ever eaten. Well, after I ordered my usual, 6 oz. filet, au gratin potatoes, potato soup, and an adult beverage, they came back with our meals and with someone else’s sweet potatoe casserole. My comment to our waitress was, no one told me about those sweet taters. I had to reorder and get some of those sweet taters! Darn I like sweet potatoes and these were covered with marshmallows and looked deadly. Now we have found perfection at “The Big Steer.” What a great night with friends and business associates.

GOMER BULLS

READY TO GO Sidewinders

On to night two of the beef expo. Guess what, “The Big Steer” was on our radar screen again, with new dinner guests to eat with. This time I ate with our new employee Bruce Kiesewetter and Mike Wells from Wishing Well Angus. Guess what this ol’ boy ordered? Yep you are correct, 6 oz Filet, sweet potato casserole, potato soup, and an adult beverage. How can you beat that perfect menu? I think Bruce and Mike were just as impressed as I was. With this place you just don’t get a bad meal. Day three, new dinner guest, Ross Butler and I had to go to a simulated banquet with what I call short snacks, little meatballs, chicken wings, and roughage (pickles, radishes, celery, etc.) So not full and close to, you guessed it, “The Big Steer”, here we come. Within just a few minutes it seemed like the folks at that simulated banquet we were at were all at “The Big Steer” with us. This time I had a menu change. After eating my snacks, I just didn’t think I could make my perfect menu fit, so I ended up just having a cup of potato soup and sweet potato casserole for my dessert. Sad to say, this was my last night at the Iowa Winter Beef Expo so, Big Steer, see ya next year and hopefully several times between now and then. Get ready Kearney, Nebraska here I come. The Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic is next on my tour schedule. I only hope that I can find a food place to match Iowa. We have lots of sales coming up so if any of our staff can help you in finding what you are looking for, let us know. I want to welcome our new staff members Bruce Kiesewetter, and Brian Mericle. As always please keep our military and their families in your thoughts and prayers. God Bless

Fetal Programming and Effects on Cow Nutrition Submitted by Evan Rayl Originally published in the SDSU Agricultural Experiment Station 2013 Annual Report. BROOKINGS, S.D. - Can changes to a cow’s energy intake during the second trimester enhance the quality of beef her offspring will produce? What effect might it have on the reproductive ability of the cow’s offspring? Those are questions a team of SDSU researchers are studying. Known as fetal programming, this concept suggests that during development of the fetus important biological parameters can be manipulated and these alterations can carry through to maturity. While fetal programming has been studied in human health, it’s a relatively new area of research in the beef industry, explains SDSU associate professor of animal science Amanda Blair. With more than $411,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the South Dakota Beef Industry Council, Blair and her colleagues began a four-year project in 2010 to determine how limiting a cow’s energy intake during the second trimester affected her calf. Blair says, “We focus primarily on the second trimester because that’s when the bulk of the muscle development [of the fetus] occurs.” She worked with SDSU Extension meat specialist Keith Underwood, feedlot nutritionist Robbie Pritchard, and geneticists Michael Gonda from SDSU and James Reecy, director of Iowa State University’s Office of Biotechnology. Three doctoral students have also been involved in the project. Former SDSU Ruminant nutritionist Aimee Wertz-Lutz is involved with the project as well. By better understanding fetal programming, the researchers hope to eventually enhance the quality and quantity of beef. The team divided 151 cows at the Cottonwood Range and Livestock Field Station near Philip, S.D., into two groups. All cows were bred in June 2010 and the groups were managed the same until the second trimester. During that 90-day period, one group was fed a “positive” energy diet to maintain an average body condition score of five, meaning the cows maintained their weight or gained slightly. The second group was fed less energy - a “negative” energy

Protein was held constant, so the only variable was energy, Blair explains. In the third trimester, the cows were then given the same rations. “We didn’t want to be extreme,” Blair explains. “We wanted to mimic what could normally happen in a production setting. Losing one-half to one body condition score during the winter is traditionally OK.” Then producers usually increase the nutritional levels in the third trimester. The calves were born in April and May 2011, weaned in October and brought to the SDSU feedlot. In spring of 2012, twenty-four head were harvested at the SDSU Meat Lab and analyzed for changes in gene expression. The remaining steers and heifers were processed at Tyson Foods in Dakota City, Neb., where carcass data and meat quality attributes were recorded. Overall, the study showed that “altering maternal energy during mid-gestation impacts the fat deposition of the offspring,” Blair explains. The calves from cows in the negative energy group had a more favorable distribution of carcass fat. “They had an increase in marbling relative to back fat,” Blair noted. “From a beef production standpoint, that’s exciting.” But, she cautions, “We don’t know what would happen long-term with the females.” A University of Nebraska study suggests that these females will be negatively affected as breeding stock. The yield grade of the offspring from the negative energy cows who cost less to feed - also was improved, Blair says. This measure looks at carcass weight, back fat, percentage of kidney, pelvic and heart fat and ribeye area. Meat tenderness and color were unaffected by the maternal diets. Though this looks good to cattle producers, Blair isn’t ready to issue any recommendations. “We have a lot to learn,” she says, particularly when it comes to breeding stock. She explains fat is very important to reproduction, both the age at which the animals reach puberty and their fertility. Next, Blair and fellow SDSU researchers will investigate the effects of reducing protein intake during mid- and late-gestation. The project has received funding from the South Dakota Beef Industry Council, and will be done in collaboration with University of Nebraska reproductive physiologist Rick Funston. “These types of studies allow us to look at the whole beef system from conception to consumption,” Blair says. Only when researchers know more about the mechanisms and what’s changing will they be able to advise producers on using fetal programming as a management tool. n

COMMENTARY

Developing Heifers Takes Close Attention to Details To Turn a Profit by Evan Rayl

He Sells!

This winter, developing heifers for resale is drawing considerable attention from a number of producers, but for it to be profitable, attention to details will likely be the difference between profit and loss. For example, consider this “biggie.” What percent of the heifers will settle during breeding season? Among many questions, this one alone could be the difference between profit and loss. Some of many other questions might be the following: Are good quality heifers available to buy? Able to buy at a reasonable price at the right time? Able to sell at a good price at the right time? What will be the percentage death loss? What is the budget for treatment of illness? Will treated heifers later be marketable? Will some of the heifers get too big or too small? Do all the heifers have good dispositions? Will some of the heifers have small pelvic measurements? How much extra feed will be needed so heifers will look good to sell? Were the heifers born in first 21 days of the calving period? Is there enough labor available to properly manage? What will the cost of labor be? Number and the cost of calving ease bulls? Space & care for bulls in the off season? Market for bulls when they are too big to breed heifers? Is the potential milking ability of the heifers too low or too high? Is there adequate pasture, lot space and housing for the heifers? Is there capital available for

while writing this article. For example, a health and vaccination program would be necessary. Of course, the basis of heifer development comes from the premise that developing heifers for any herd should be an operation that is handled separate from the rest of the cow herd. Doing so becomes a problem when the number of heifers retained is for a small herd and could be handled better in a larger group. For example, how can one justify the purchase of a heifer bull when the number of heifers retained is less than 10? Years ago, 10 or 12 was about all a yearling bull could handle, but just yesterday, I sold a yearling bull where my neighbors plan to run him with 24 heifers. ONE Light Birth Weights: 90 per cent of our bulls are suitable for heifers. TWO Rapid Growth: The heaviest yearling bull ever raised here was 1661 pounds. The heaviest yearling bull ever used here was GC Weightlifter 823, who still holds the test station record at 1710 pounds from 20 years ago! THREE High Quality Carcasses: Customer had 38 of 41 fed cattle make CAB. Many customers regularly sell over 70% CAB finished cattle. We have used the high accuracy Stouffer Ultrasound System for 25 years. FOUR Feed Efficiency: Three bull crops averaged 4.25 pounds of feed per pound of gain (over 150 bulls). The two top bulls only needed 2.64 and 2.76 pounds of feed per pound of gain. FIVE Convenience Traits: GOOD STRUCTURE VERY DOCILE FLESHING ABILITY GOOD FEET & LEGS CLEAN SHEATHS LONGEVITY DAUGHTERS WITH GOOD UDDERS AND “JUST RIGHT” MILKING ABILITY

SIX Show Ring Confirmation: The last bull shown was 2nd in class to the Grand Champion in Denver. The next to last heifer shown was 2nd in class to a $80,000 heifer in Denver The very last heifer ever shown won many Iowa Summer shows. She would have won more, but she was 10 years ahead of her time. The dam of Black Canyon. Dear Progressive Cattlemen: For the past 66 years I have been breeding Registered Angus Cattle for the producer who wants to make a profit in this business. For the past 39 years, we have been recording birth, weaning, and yearling weights. For the past 25 years, we have been taking ultrasound measurements, and for the past 4 years, we have been recording feed efficiency data on an official test. We have now tested over 200 bulls. The bulls, RAF KCC Over Achiever 106 (only 2.76# of feed needed per # of gain) and CSG Contact 2E (only 2.64# of feed needed per # of gain) are herd sires here, who have come out of these tests. ~ Evan Rayl

Todd Hixon 307-9761-2973 COMMENTARY

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things by Evan Rayl

Just last month, I reported the National Finals Rodeo was planning to leave Las Vegas for Florida after 29 years in its present location. At that time the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Board of Directors voted 6-3 to leave. But since then, the boards of the Las Vegas Events Board of Trustees and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Board of Directors have voted unanimous and announced that they have reached an agreement to keep the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas through 2024 with the new agreement beginning following the 2014 Wrangler NFR. Per the agreement, LVE would; guarantee $16.5 million annually in purse and sponsorship for the Wrangler NFR. From 2015-19, the contestant purse will be $10 million, while stock contractors will receive $3 million annually. The National weather forecast is predicting a very limited water supply for the area west of the Continental Divide and California Governor Brown has declared a Drought State of Emergency with concerns about the supply of drinking water. This means farmers will have no water for irrigation. California generally gets a lot of rain in the flat areas and lots of snow in higher elevations in the winter. In the summer, they are totally dependent on irrigation, so farmers will not be able to plant crops, unless more moisture comes quickly. Meanwhile, here in southwest Iowa, we have had very little snow this winter, following severe moisture shortages the past two summers. In addition, we have cracks in the ground running both ways about every 20 feet. Most people can get at least part of the palm of their hand down in them. Local plumbers report they have someone with a broken water line from freezing every day. These broken lines are caused by, but never surface because of the large cracks. The only solution is to replace large sections of the water line. All this is aggravated by the extreme low rainfall the past two years and this winter, plus the low temperatures and continual high winds we are having this winter. At least twice, we’ve had winds in the 70 miles per hour range. One of those times, I was in a building that was replaced after a tornado about 12 years ago. I was sure glad that we put in extra bracing when we rebuilt it. It still made plenty of creaking noises anyway. It has been my experience that folks who have no vices, have very few virtues. The Canadian XL Pipeline Final Environmental Impact Statement is due in the coming weeks. Canadian leaders are in Washington to build relations with U.S. leaders and to press for support of the job-creating pipeline project. The $7 billion, 1,700 mile, high-tech Keystone XL pipeline will transport 830,000 barrels a day of oil, including 100,000 barrels of light sweet Bakken crude from North Dakota to U.S. refineries. The pipeline will take 500 trucks a day off western North Dakota roads, improving public safety and reducing wear and tear on the states infrastructure. Additionally, the pipeline is expected to create 42,000 jobs in the construction phase. However, some of my Nebraska friends point out that even with changes in the route of the pipeline, some of the line still goes thru the Oglala Aquifer. Even a small leak in that area of the pipeline would pollute the entire Aquifer and ruin its usefulness for years. It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.

You can not escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.

Have you noticed I’ve been on an Abraham Lincoln quote kick lately?

The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) Board of Directors have announced the hire of Twig Marston, PhD., of Norfolk, NE as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the national association. Marston assumed the leadership role on January 20th. Marston was born and raised on a diversified ranch outfit in Kansas where his family raised both commercial and purebred cattle. He earned an animal science degree at Kansas State U., his masters in animal breeding and genetics at K-State, and his doctorate at Oklahoma State U. in ruminant nutrition. Marston worked as a senior beef

Have you read about all the John Deere retail store mergers lately. They seem to be happening in lots of places. In central Iowa, we have one company that is operating in fifteen locations, plus they have two powersports dealerships. I am wondering what the reason is? Could it be to build dealerships too strong to fail. Or could it be to make it hard for buyers to shop around? Or to hold down the volume of parts needed to be kept on hand? I know a local dealership with a half dozen stores has a man that moves parts around among the stores on a regular route at least five or six days a week. n

FYI

Calving Season - Time to Evaluate Udder Soundness Submitted by Evan Rayl Thanks to the Gelbvieh News for use of this report.

Cow-calf producers should consider udder soundness as an economically relevant trait translating to the life or death of a newborn calf. The simple process of taking udder scores will improve overall udder soundness in your cow herd. For the beef cow, udder quality and soundness usually get lumped in a category called convenience traits, along with others including temperament and feed and leg soundness. While all of these traits have the potential for economic impact to a cow’s productivity, at calving time poor udder quality may translate to life and death of a newborn calf. Calves that have a difficult time nursing and do not receive adequate colostrum may, at worse, not survive and at best have a higher incidence of scours and decreased immunity levels. Ultimately performance is affected which translates into reduced pounds at weaning and reduced profitability of the cow overall. The impact on performance, on top of the labor costs that can be occurred managing those cows that need help getting a calf to nurse should be considered as additional incentive to include this process in your calving rituals. Udder scoring at calving is a tool that, while more widespread in the dairy industry, has been shown to improve udder quality in beef females. Research has shown that udder quality is moderately heritable. Which means that over time improvement can be made with selection for this trait.

The Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) adopted an udder scoring system which provides a tool for both commercial and seedstock producers to score both teat size and suspension on a scale of 1 - 9 with a 9 being ideal. Scoring cows within 24-48 hours of calving is the recommended time for evaluating these females. Where do the most problems commonly lie? Canadian research shows that cows with more desirable teat scores had calves that nursed sooner after birth. Larger teat circumference usually caused more problems than teat length. Short to medium length teats are preferred over long teats. Oversized teats that did not get milked out had a higher incidence of mastitis. Udder suspension is equally important to udder soundness. Udders that are well attached are less susceptible to injury than the very pendulous poorly attached udders. As well, udders with poor suspension are more susceptible to contamination from fecal material or mud. Pigmentation is not a factor in the udder scoring system, however should be a consideration for cow-calf producers. A darker pigmented udder will be protected from sunburn or reflection of sunlight from snow. One other tool that can be used in sire selection for the udder soundness component is the American Gelbvieh Association’s stayability EPD. While many factors are included in this EPD, udder soundness can be attributed to a female’s ability to still be in the herd at age six. Sires with higher stayability can be assumed to have average or better udder quality. It can be said that cows with poor udders are definitely not convenient when it comes to calving in the cold days of late January and February. As such an evaluation of udder soundness throughout the cow herd may prove to be a sound practice to help insure less calving and calf survival challenges in the future. n

From the Tailgate, I would like to thank Mike and his family for giving me this new opportunity and somewhat of a career change in the beef industry. I am honored to help producers market their programs in Livestock Plus. I have a great passion for the beef industry. I would also like to thank those of you that are taking the time from your busy day to read this article. As we all know, from the tailgate of the old truck and a cold beverage of your choice, us cowboys and cowgirls can solve most anything, if we could only get our government to sit on that tailgate, enough said. I hope that with this very long and cold winter you have been able to find a day and a warm spot in between thawing out drinkers and helping the newborns. The trip to Denver this year was as successful as any, only because of my traveling partners Pat Burns and Brother Dan. Pat and I soon found out that we only had to ask the smart phone of Dan’s to get the answer. HA HA! Now with that spirit of fellowship in mind it was nice to get together with those people I call my very good friends. Unfortunately, I only get to see them one or two times a year. Then there were the cattle we saw in the yards as well as on the Hill. It was very refreshing to see the high quality of cattle and the different breeds that are still thriving. I believe that this is what makes our beef industry so good in that we can have those different breeds and opinions about cattle and we are able to produce a very high quality end product that will keep this industry on track. As we are getting closer to AI’ing those cows or trying to find a herd bull to make the next great and profitable calf crop, remember that the purebred side of the industry offers us the best and time tested genetics, no matter how many defects the scientists find. As always, if anyone at LPI can assist you in merchandising your livestock just call. Thank you for your time, Bruce Z_Layout 1 8/20/13 11:43 AM Page 1 Diamond

Well this month’s article is a little different in that I want to update everyone on the status of my friend, Estee (Walter) Nenow’s, little girl, Alaina. Last year in March, many of us were dumbstruck when Estee posted the news that Alaina had a tumor and a rare form of childhood cancer at six months old. I remember it so vividly because I was at the Ohio Beef Expo. I had to ask Tuck to watch the booth for a second as I ran to the bathroom to compose myself. My heart was breaking for them. I couldn’t stop the tears. Estee is such a strong, courageous, beautiful woman and let me add that she has four other beautiful children along with Alaina. I just couldn’t get my mind around what she must be feeling or thinking. Tucker was a bit confused by my tears and I tried to explain it. Together, we decided PRAYER would be the best thing we could do. Now, fast forward to February 2014! Here is what Estee posted, “Alaina’s scans once again showed no evidence of B&B Equipment:Layout 1 9/19/12 10:28 AM Page 1 disease. The doctor is still

amazed by her - her energy, happiness, advanced developmental skills, and no side effects thus far. We are so blessed. Now we are waiting for the results of her tests from Mayo tomorrow. If those results are good, we will repeat a test in three months and if those are acceptable, she will not have another MRI until August. That suits this mother just fine.” We couldn’t be happier for you Estee and FAMILY! You all continue to amaze us and now I have happy tears!!!! I realize there are many people dealing with childhood cancer and Estee’s family is just close to my heart. So when they ask for that cancer donation please remember God’s little blessings! I have no idea who wrote this but I love it! They know me in a way no one ever has They open me to things I never knew existed. They drive me to insanity and push me to my depths They are the beat of my heart, the pulse of my veins, and the energy in my soul.
