MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings, Can you believe that Thanksgiving is only 5 weeks away? Today I think it was like 70 degrees and wind near perfect. Now if it would just stay this way ‘til mid April 2015 and then straighten up and be nice for spring we would be in great shape. This month will be food from afar, “Rio Sabinas” FreshMex Bar & Grill in Belgrade, Montana. The cover of their menu reads: “Infusing the Flavors of the West through the Grill.” It was my pleasure to be dinning with Dale & Nancy Venhuizen of Churchill Cattle Co. and Joe Rickabaugh of the American Hereford Association. Rio Sabinas is one of those places that not only would you probably never find, but if you did, you would ask where to find a steak house instead! Dale & Nancy highly recommended this place, though and Dale says this is one of Nancy’s favorites. I say Nancy knows what she is talking about. The southwestern baby back ribs were deadly. I mean, fall off the bone deadly. They also served rice and some kind of baked

2014 North Carolina State Fair GRAND CHAMPION came from last year's sale!

beans with my ribs. So, ol’ country boy Mike dumped the beans in the rice and had me some rice-n-beans that were delicious. The atmosphere in this place was pretty cool. TV’s were on, a live musician was doing his thing, and Nancy told me that Evil Knievel’s son waits tables there. I didn’t get to meet him, but he was there that night. If you ever make it to Belgrade, Montana, ask for directions to Rio Sabinas and just enjoy. Thanks Dale, Nancy, and Joe for a great time looking at cattle and dining. Next, I had a call from Phil Rottman from Fremont, Michigan. He asked if I would come look at his bull calves after the Ridgeview sale. When you have been on the road as long as I had and you have an imaginary view of home and the feel of your own bed, there is something about driving an hour out of your way to look at cattle that just seems not so smart. Well, wrong again. It was a great stop and watch Livestock Plus for their up coming sale in 2015. The best part of this stop was when, Chris, Phil’s wife asked if Ted Stanley, my driver for this trip, and I would take time to eat with them or did she have to make a meal to go. Well, with me being in a hurry, I asked for it to go. (yes, I know, pretty disrespectful of me, my apologies to Chris). I think I made a mistake again. We got in the car and I opened up my supper to find homemade apple crisp, barbecued beef sandwich, and chips. My mistake in this deal was that if we would have stayed and ate supper at their place, I think maybe I could have had seconds of that apple crisp. I’m a big fan of apple crisp, if made correctly. I’m guessing you are getting it by now, Chris could be the apple crisp queen. It was flat deadly. The proper amount of crispy, just a little tart, but a lot of sweet, and the apples "Greetings" continued on pg 20

COMMENTARY

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things

Food Prize symposium. They were to lead discussions about the deadly diseases’ impact on their countries. In addition, the President of Sierra Leone was supposed to attend the event in Des Moines, but due to the Ebola outbreak he did not leave his West African nation. However, he did participate in the conference and deliver a keynote address via satellite hook-up.

by Evan Rayl

For years, Flint Hills ranchers burned the grass in their pastures during the last part of April. But for many years, the city of Wichita and other smaller towns have narrowly avoided federal air quality sanctions that could cost the city and towns and their residents tens of millions of dollars, annually. However, new research announced by Kansas State University - done mostly by a scientist named Gene Towne - might give Wichita, and other cities down wind from the Flint Hills, a break. Ranchers in the Flint Hills view with suspicion any attempt by city or federal officials to curb their annual grassland burns. If not for the burns, the Flint Hills would become a woodland of cedar forest nearly impenetrable and useless for livestock grazing. Towne tried burning all times of the year, including the favored last two weeks of April and found no difference in the results. The standard for results was 32 pounds of gain on yearling cattle per acre. The only restriction would be that all ranchers could not set fires the same time of the year. Habits a hundred years old are hard to break!!! It kills you to see them grow up. But, I guess it would kill you quicker, if they didn’t. Annually, for the last ten and possibly the last fifteen years, I have attended the Iowa State Fair 4-H Beef of Merit Show. It is easy to attend because I am there at the Livestock Show Ring to attend the Angus Cattle Show earlier in the day. It is late in the afternoon; after the 4-H Heifer Show that is on the other side of the ring from the Angus Show. Both of those shows draw huge crowds, especially the 4-H Heifer Show. As soon as the heifer show is over and pictures of the top five are taken, almost everyone leaves the building, except a few grandparents of the kids in the steer show and me. I did manage to talk a couple of Angus breeders into watching the carcass show once, but I’ve never seen them show up again. First, the High Cutability Grid classes are shown, then the High Quality Grid classes were shown. Both shows had over 40 steers. The next day, the calves went to the packing plant. The winner of the High Cutability Grid class got docked at the packing plant because the steer weighed over 900# dressed. About a month after the shows, you can study the data on every steer on the internet by typing in “4-H Beef of Merit 201_ Iowa State Fair.” This is a real educational event. See you there next year. Too often we give chidren answers to remember rather than problems to solve. African ag leaders were expected to discuss the Ebola threat to food security at the World Food Meeting in Des Moines just a few days ago. The Ebola virus is sweeping through three West African countries and taking thousands of lives there, plus now threating those countries’ economies and food supplies. Agriculture leaders from Liberia and Sierra Leone were scheduled to be at the World

Don’t worry that children never listen to you, worry that they are always watching you. After the droughts of recent years, forecasters thought it would take several years to rebuild subsoil moisture. They’ve got to be wrong, at least, in most of Iowa. It is nice for cattlemen to not be short on pasture and hay. Higher weaning weights along with the higher prices is also good for cattlemen. Unfortunately, the price of corn and beans are below the cost of production. Those who have storage space can wait for higher prices, unless they need cash. As usual, some smaller operators may decide to get out or be forced out of farming. The number of people living in rural Iowa gets smaller every year. If I had my child to raise all over again, I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later. I’d finger-paint more and point the finger less. I woud do less correcting and more connecting. I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes. I’d take more hikes and fly more kites. I’d stop playing serious and seriously play. I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars. I’d do more hugging and less tugging. - Diane Loomans “River Transportation looks to be the biggest bottleneck for shipment of corn and beans this crop year” according to Walter Kemmsies, speaking at the Oilseed and Grain Traade Summit recently in New Orleans.. “For years, the grain industry has geen urging the government to invest in repairing and upgrading the waterways system particularly the locks and dams that control the movement of barges up and down the Mississippi River. Currently, the river system is operating at capacity.” In June, President Obama signed the Water Resources, Reform and Development Act, but construction is yet to start. “In addition, the highway system has not been upgraded and is not in good shape. Receiving the best report is the railroads who have been doing the most to improve operations and capacity. The railroads have put more money into the system than the highway or river guys have. When looking at it coldly and analytically it is hard to yell at the railroads for anything. They have put money to work.” ■ "Greetings" continued from pg 4

were perfect. If nothing else I may go back for another visit on the hope of more apple crisp. Thanks Phil & Chris. Ted and I had a good time looking at a great set of cattle and a big thank you for supper!! Thanksgiving is around the corner and we hope that you have a blessed Thanksgiving and you can spend some valuable time with family and friends. Please keep our military in your thoughts and prayers over the holidays. God Bless,

submitted by Evan Rayl

A federal district judge in Colorado has dismissed a lawsuit filed by seedstock producer Leachman Cattle of Colorado against the American Summental Association that alleged patent infringement for a calculator providing economic value on commercial calves. Judge R. Brooke Jackson, district judge for Colorado dismissed the case on August 29th after determining the court had no personal jurisdiction over the ASA as it related to the plaintiffs‘ claims. “Few if any factual allegations have been made that would support a finding that ASA’s actions to place in or were purposefully aimed at the state of Colorado,” Jackson wrote. “The court cannot therefore assert personal jurisdiction over ASA in connection to these federal claims.” Leachman, owned by Lee Leachman of Wellington, Colorado and Verified Beef, the Bozeman, Montana-based license for Leachman’s patented calculator filed the suit April 11 against ASA in Colorado’s federal court. The Simmental Association, like Verified Beef, is headquartered in Bozeman. Leachman and Verified Beef alleged the ASA had committed a trade secret misappropriation, and interfered with prospective business relations, when it began duplicating Leachman and Verified Beef’s method for assessing value on a group of calves. Leachman’s calculator method was granted a patent in February 2014. The plaintiffs argued that in discussions before the patent was granted’ the ASA entered confidentiality agreements not to use the calculator for any competitive purposes. The ASA disputes the confidentiality agreement claim and defended its development of a competing calculating profit method saying the technology to do so was developed within the public domain--not exclusively by Leachman and Verified Beef. The lawsuit stirred discussion among breed associations at this year’s Beef Improvement Federation and led to a proposed resolution from the National Association of Animal Breeders opposing Leachman’s patent for “publicly available and widely utilized technologies.” Jackson dismissed the lawsuit without prejudice, meaning the plaintiffs can file the action again. Thanks to the staff of Progressive Cattleman for use of this report. ■

Classic Female Sale - Stillwater, OK Money Makin’ Mommas Sale - Ames, IA December 27 Bruhn Angus Farm Incredible Female Sale - Dunlap, IA From the Tailgate, I hope this issue finds you in the heart of the harvest season. I bid you a good one as well as a safe one. I found myself with a very good set of traveling partners this past month, Pat Burns of Burns Angus and George Swenka of Double G Angus. We found our way to the southeast part of South Dakota on this trip. The almost five hundred miles we traveled to get to our stop gave us plenty of time to work through all the problems of the world, as well as the recent changes at the America Angus Assoc., but we won’t get into that. We wound up in Mitchell South Dakota for the start of a state tour. Now I would like to say a big congrats to the South Dakota Angus Assoc.; the breeders and the tour committee for hosting one of the best tours I have had the pleasure to attend. The different types of cattle and management styles was great to see. As I travel around the country whether it is to make a herd visit, work a sale, attend a show or a tour, I keep finding not only good livestock no matter what breed it is, I continue to find even better people. So, if you find yourself in the southeast part of South Dakota, make sure you stop to see some very good Angus folks. They have hospitality running out the pasture gates for you. The trip, as far as weather, was great the first day, but the morning of the second day was not the best for looking at cattle. To the credit of the tour goers, we got off the buses and looked at what we could. That’s cattlemen for you! This trip was also nice as I was able to meet new cattle people like the Dikoff’s from Onaka, SD as well as old friends like Gegg Butman of Cottonwood Angus at Pipestone, MN and Tracy Pedrettie of Mill Coulee Angus in WI. So as I come to a close this month, it means all in my book that I not only found really good cattle, but started some great relationships with the people behind those animals. As always, it was good to see and talk to everyone in my travels this past month. If anyone at LPI can help you with the marketing or finding the one, just call. Thank you for your time! - Bruce

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Fall! I tell ya, I love football season, except when my son blames me solely for the 49ers loss to the Bears. Evidently, him going to bed on that fateful Sunday night is the one and only reason the 9ers lost! He has a funny superstition about holding his special Frank Gore football cards during the game! His newest addition to his list of superstitions is holding Charlie, the cat, hostage for the duration of the game. Thank you to Jennifer Carrico and Klayton Bremer for the Gore cards! Listening to the kids’ conversations in the car is complete entertainment, who needs the radio! Taylor asks, “What does being in heat mean?” Tucker responds, “Well, its when the girls will HAVE to find a boy!” What made me laugh is that she was completely satisfied with that answer. One of my other favorites is when we were on our way to help Matt castrate baby pigs and Tucker says, “Tay, do you remember where you put your “ball bucket”? ” If you can’t tell, Taylor’s self appointed job is to collect all the testicles. The cats get quite the gourmet meal on those days! Oh, what comes out of farm kids’ mouths! Matt and I hold our breath during those children’s ser-
