Why use yardley Bulls

1. Yardley bulls have eye appeal and conformation to sire calves that will top the market, and performance and growth to push down the scales. Feeders want Yardley sired calves because of their eye appeal and gainability 2. Their heifer calves will be the best cows that you have ever owned. 3. These bulls are grown in big lots where they get plenty of exercise. Wintered mostly on hay so they can live on grass, many buyers tell us they like our bulls because they, “don’t have to pamper them.” Performance comes from their ability to convert forage, not from an excess of grain. 4. Our focus has always been on our maternal traits and cow families. We have AI’d for 50 years selecting the best bulls we can find. Selection emphasis is placed on fleshing ability and performance to excel on the range, in the pasture and feedlot, with eye appeal to be competitive in the show ring. 5. Our cattle have natural fleshing ability to stay fat on grass. Our cows take care of themselves wintering on desert winter range without any hay and calve unassisted on their own.

MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings, Iowa weather doesn’t change much, it’s unpredictable all the time, 50 degrees to 20 below. Heck of a swing and I prefer the up side of that swing. I’m writing this on the way home from the National Western Stock Show, on I-80, at 83 miles an hour and yes Dixie is driving, with only minor road rage. It always amazes me that you can follow a car driving the speed limit or under the speed limit and can’t pass for 20 plus miles, pass ‘em and run seven to eight miles and hour over and they are so close they could take off your license plate. Road rage at its best! My report comes from the National Western Club / National Western Stock Show. “The Livestock Marketeers” banquet. I along with Austin Brandt, Cody Crum, and Randy Rasby attended the annual Livestock Marketeers Banquet. Congrats to Mark Smith and Tim Lacky on getting inducted into the Marketeers Hall of Fame. Also, special thanks to Stewart

Wilson and Harding and Harding Livestock Insurance for their sponsorship and to all the folks that make this event possible. First on our agenda was indulging in a few adult beverages, socializing, and reminiscing with the folks you don’t see often and meeting new folks in our business. Then there was the banquet part of the evening. We had steak that was prepared to a perfection, cheesy potatoes that were deadly, green beans, and lemon pie. The meal was made to suit all of us country boys. The program consisted of roasting the inductees, Guy Peverley, Neal Orth, Sonny Booth, and Doug Paul. We pretty much figured out everything that these inductees had done both good and bad their whole life and explained in their own words. Believe me, the adult beverages made the humor even more humorous. It’s kind of like Vegas, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, and what happens in the Livestock Marketeers Banquet, stays in the Livestock Marketeers group. Thanks to everyone for a great time! We look forward to seeing all of you at “The Iowa Beef Expo,” “The Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic,” and “The Illinois Beef Expo.” Please help our country’s leaders solve the world’s problems, and please pray for our military and their families. God Bless

P.S. I would like to thank all the folks that had a part in nominating me for Friend of the Iowa Winter Beef Expo. It’s a tremendous honor for my family and me.

NEWS RELEASE

KEEGAN BAILEY IOWA FOUNDATION HEIFER PROGRAM 2018 WINNER SELECTED Contributed by Norma Bolton for IBBC Heifer Project selection team. Ms. Keegan Bailey, daughter of Larry and Kelsey Bailey, of Creston, Iowa has been chosen as the 2018 recipient of three bred heifers awarded by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. Initiated in an attempt to help young Iowans begin foundation beef herds, this is the eighth year of the Iowa Foundation Heifer Program. Keegan was chosen from a group of extremely well qualified applicants. She is a 7th grader at St Malachy Middle School in Creston, IA. Keegan lives with her 2 younger sisters and parents on a farm near Creston. She is an active member of the Highland Highlights 4-H Club, showing both market and breeding beef projects. Keegan is a member of the Union County Youth Beef Team and has participated at state, regional and national Simmental shows and events. Her recommendations describe her as an excellent student with leadership qualities who is willing to accept responsibilities in her school, community and church. She is an outgoing, enthusiastic young lady who selected Simmentals as her breed of choice and is excited to begin her duties as the new owner of three Simmental heifers. Those heifers were purchased from Van Aernam Simmentals (the Van Aernam Family of Exira, IA) by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. At the end of 5 years, when she graduates from high school, Ms. Bailey will help further fund the project by contributing $6,000. Keegan and her family will be present on Monday night, February 12th, at the IA Beef Expo Annual Kick-off Party where she will be hon-

A note from Heidi.... Dad didn’t really like the idea that I wanted to run this article that was included in the Iowa Beef Expo magazine, “Friend of the Iowa Beef Expo,” because he is part owner of the magazine. However, being the slightly stubborn daughter that I am, I insisted! I think my siblings would agree, our Dad deserves this honor! He may have driven us slightly crazy growing up in the show barn, with his constant pushing to always put in a little more time. We can never forget his especially encouraging phrase, “are you stimulating hair follicles!” His passion for the cattle industry does not compare to anyone else I know! He’s a pretty incredible Dad and we couldn’t be more proud to publish this story! Love you Dad! ~ Heidi, Bubba & Mandi

NEWS RELEASE

Mike Sorensen 2018 Friend of the Iowa Beef Expo by Kellie Carolan Mike Sorensen is a familiar face at the Iowa Beef Expo. He has seen the beef expo from a variety of seats throughout its history and being a part of its success, he has been selected as the 2018 Friend of the Iowa Beef Expo. Mike Sorensen Family (MSF) Cattle Hereford cattle have been a staple of the Sorensen family for many years. Ray Sorensen, Mike’s dad, started with Hereford commercial cows and fed many Hereford influenced cattle, which was typical of the Iowa cattle production in those days. As the boys, Mike and Jerry, and sister, Lori, got into 4-H, they started winning the rate of gains at the local county fair. In 1966, the Sorensen family had top four calves in the rate of gain class. Then 1967, they earned the top five places plus sixth and ninth place at the county fair. It was about this time, the family made the addition of purebred Herefords to the operation. Both boys, showed at the numerous open class fairs around the state.

Livestock Plus Inc.

As the continental breeds were coming in to the states in the 1970s and Mike ‘slipped off’ the Hereford train for a few years. He decided to crossbreed the Herefords to raise club calves. He soon realized that his cow herd needed the maternal genetics of the Hereford and Angus, so back to the Herefords he went! After Ray and Eileen had sold their cows, the kids suggested over the Thanksgiving meal that they slow down, find something they enjoy and travel a bit. Fast forward to Christmas dinner, Ray proudly proclaimed that he and Eileen had taken everyone’s advice. He told the family that they had purchased 10 Hereford heifers to enjoy and that they would ‘travel’ to the back of the farm once a day to look at them! Mike Sorensen Family cattle pride themselves on maintaining an excellent line-up of proven genetics with a strong maternal focus. They sell cattle and genetics at the Iowa Beef Expo, on an annual online sale and privately off the farm. The Sorensen family Mike and his wife, Dixie, have been married 46 years and have three grown children plus seven grandchildren. You can tell in any conversation with Mike or Dixie that their family, especially those grandchildren, are their pride and joy! Their oldest daughter, Heidi Rohrig, is involved in sales for Livestock Plus. She helps acquire ads and keeps producers on their toes with deadline reminders. Along with her husband, Matt, and three kids, Tucker, Taylor and Treva, actively raise and promote swine raised on their farm near Orient. Their son, Ray, most commonly known as ‘Bubba’, is the famed Freedom Rock painter. He started painting the original Freedom Rock in May of 1999 and it has grown to a 99 Iowa County project plus a 50 states project. His wife, Maria, works fulltime keeping the business side of Bubba’s painting in order. They have two kids, Independence and Michael Ray. Their youngest daughter, Mandi Eisbach, is assistant manager for HIM and medical coder for the Adair County Memorial Hospital. Her husband, Brian, is banker, loan office and financial advisor for the FNB bank in Greenfield. They have two

COMMENTARY

How I See It by Austin Brandt

Where did the month of January go? I currently am sitting in my hotel room in Denver anxiously awaiting the weather to get a little better and start the trip home! I’m not sure which one I look forward to more…. Getting to go to Denver or getting to go home from Denver after two weeks? Regardless of which one is correct, the National Western was a great time, as always! From the great cattle to the even better people, I truly enjoyed talking with old friends and customers as well as meeting many new people. Oh and the food….. I’m kinda interested which meal from Denver is featured in the front of this issue because I was with Mike for a few good ones! Now, with the NWSS under our belts, it is time to move on to the bulk of sale season and to the Iowa Beef Expo. Speaking of the IBE, I encourage you all to join us for not only the shows and sales but especially on kickoff night when the Friend of the Expo award will be given. This years winner is someone who has taught me a lot of what I know about in this industry and has been a true mentor and second Dad to me….. Congrats Mike! I can’t think of anyone else who deserves this award as much you! We’ll see ya down the road! Austin

Iowa Salers Assn.

kids Isabelle and Maxwell. The Livestock Plus Mike is most notably known to cattle producers young and old through the Livestock Plus. He got his start in purebred livestock promotion when he was part of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Convention tradeshow in downtown Des Moines. He was working the Iowa Salers booth and next door was the booth for the Midwest Marketer. In those days convention ran several days and over the course of that time, Mike visited with Lori Schooley about how the Midwest Marketer needed a purebred livestock section. Shortly thereafter, Mike started work for the Midwest Marketer, creating and growing the newly added position. After a couple years, Mike felt there was a need for a glossy magazine for the purebred folks. Mike set out to make his vision a reality. In two week time, the first Livestock Plus rolled off the printer. It was eight pages long with two pages of paid advertising. It circulated to about 800 producers. The second month the publication grew to 16 pages with almost half of them being paid advertising and the circulation grew to over 2,000 producers. It was after the third magazine at 24 pages in length the Livestock Plus out grew the local printer and they haven’t looked back since! The current publication is 80 plus pages each month and is mailed to more than 16,000 mailboxes that have requested the publication. Today, the Livestock Plus is a partnership effort with the Allen family from Minnesota and employs several staff that along with Mike, pack their bags and crisscrosses the country talking cattle and helping make sales happen. The five day run of purebred sales at the Iowa Beef Expo takes a team and Mike, as well as his staff, are key players from start to finish. Salers and the Iowa Beef Breeds Council When Mike’s kids started showing, his dad purchased two Salers heifers from Loren Scott for Heidi and Bubba to show. Both excelled in the show ring, made great cows and landed Mike on both the Iowa Salers Board and on the Iowa Beef Breeds Council as the Salers representative. Additionally, in 1996, he served as the organization’s president for two years. When asked about the Iowa Beef Expo, Mike is quick to say, “Everyone that has been as part of the board or staff should take great pride in the Iowa Beef Expo. It has always been the focus of the organization (Iowa Beef Breeds Council) to keep the expo growing and plan for its future. Everyone in the country looks to Iowa and tries to copy what we have accomplished.” Congratulations Over the years, Mike has logged many miles working for the cattle industry. He credits a ‘special bride’ that is willing put up with long hours, days and sometimes weeks away from home and lots of phone calls. In recent years, Dixie has gotten to travel a bit more and they ‘see the country’ even if it is in the middle of the night! Mike, your fellow purebred breeders and the Iowa Beef Industry Council would like to thank you and your family for all the hours you have devoted to our industry and specifically the Iowa Beef Expo. Congratulations on being the 2018 Friend of the Iowa Beef Expo. n

RILEY BROTHERS ANGUS strives every day to produce industry desirable cattle that fit the needs of our country’s cattle producers and beef consumers. Cattle have become a passion of ours and we make it a challenge to create our next generation of herd sires for the future. Building a respected reputation for our cattle is equally important to us as the friendships we have developed. While cattle mean the world to us, we recognize that without the opportunity to share them with our friends, our efforts would be pointless. Please join us for our annual bull sale on February 17, 2018.

The National Western Stock Show is one of my favorite times of the year. Not only due to it being the “daddy of them all” in regards to cow shows, but there is just something about the city of Denver that puts me in a good mood. This year especially because of the wonderful weather God blessed us with while we were there! I’m sure many of you were like me and came home to some bitter cold. It was great to see so many of you and get the chance to catch up. I sure felt like there was quite the buzz out there this year. I mean every sale I saw there was hardly a seat to be found! And not to mention the shows. If you wanted a good seat, you better have gotten there early and plan on staying until the end. I am still not sure how I managed to make the trip without buying anything…oh wait, yes I do, because my wife didn’t get to tag along this year. As many of you older and supposedly wiser men would tell me, “it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than it is permission.” Well that may very well be true but my wife was not the happiest of campers that she didn’t get to make the trip this year so I figured I was in enough trouble as it was! I hope to see some of you at the upcoming sales or expos over the next month. If you are able to join us at the Iowa Beef Expo this year be sure to congratulate our ring leader, Mike Sorensen on his recognition of being named the “2018 Friend of the Iowa Beef Expo.” As most of you already know, Mike is one of a kind and as good as they come. It’s an honor to be able to work alongside and learn from one of the best in the business! Congratulations, Mike! God Bless, Cody

The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association bull and heifer evaluation program serves the needs of both the cattle seedstock producers and producers with commercial cow-calf herds. The program, which has been in place since 1985, provides seedstock producers comparison and bench marking information. The cow-calf producer benefits include access to superior genetics for their herd to enhance their bottom line. Bulls and heifers must meet strict selection criteria to be eligible for one of three ICA sales. The bulls are evaluated for carcass merit, reproductive soundness, structural correctness, disposition and growth. The top 75% of the evaluated bulls and heifers in each breed that meet the criteria earn ICA’s ‘Symbol of Excellence’ and are sold at the sales.

“We’re not just trying to fill people’s heads with new knowledge – it’s more about lighting a fire,” said Jared Decker, an Extension beef geneticist at Mizzou. “We’re focused on helping farmers and ranchers understand the technology, but, more than that, to trust the technology and identify ways they can use it. We want to educate producers and help them take that next leap.” The multi-disciplinary grant is in partnership with the MU College of Veterinary Medicine. NCARG will have a big focus on continuing education for veterinarians, including educational and training opportunities for veterinary students, graduate students, farmers, ranchers and allied industry professionals. “This center again underscores the collaborative environment between schools and programs that exist at Mizzou to advance training for veterinary and animal science students, and research that benefits Missouri stakeholders,” said College of Veterinary Medicine Interim Dean Carolyn Henry, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Oncology). The idea for a center of this type has been discussed amongst faculty in the Division of Animal Sciences for the past few years. David Patterson and Mike Smith, both professors of reproductive physiology, have taught numerous full-day sessions at American Veterinary Medical Association meetings. With all of the programs in place at MU, Patterson and Smith had many discussions on ways to share that research with not only Missouri, but on a national level. “Our reproductive and genomic research is so closely tied – and both are great strengths within our division,” Patterson said. “A center of this nature is the logical next step for our division. With beef cattle, there is so much technology that could help operations. We want to help transfer that technology to industry participants at all levels.”

COMMENTARY

The Road Ahead in February for Cattle by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade We reminded you folks in the Livestock Plus Inc. family of subscribers in last month’s articlethat the Federal Reserve raised rates once again and yet Gold and Silver took off and the Dollar sold off anyway. This was ‘big stuff’ and extremely important to Livestock Producers around this powerful new economic United States that Mr. Trump and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross are doing such a good job for. Trump and team have fueled a powerful optimism that our country does not have to apologize to the rest of the world every other day, but instead this country is flexing our business might and strong economic data to keep beef exports steady to up and to continue to put American interests first and thereby benefit the hard working family ranches here in the U.S. Why ‘big stuff’ you might ask? Inflation is what were are talking about here. You’ll see in the charts down below that Crude Oil, Ground Beef, Choice Brisket, and Gold have broken out on the upside and inflation is probably here and with Walmart raising wages that the stage is set for much more inflation. This is a very good thing for Cattlemen and like-kind beef producers in the short and middle term, even if it is likely dangerous 10 years out since the purchasing power of our Dollars would be diminished greatly by the inflation. Some analysts have wisely reminded us all that if China starts eating more beef in their affluence in an always growing population that demand for American beef would be outrageous. The bottom line is that it has been many years since we have had meaningful inflation and it clearly looks like this new year of 2018 will be the year of inflation. Therefore, if Cattle producers can reasonably expect inflation and thus higher prices for just about everything from beef to cotton to gasoline then producers should power on ahead with plans of expansion on the ranch level to increase herds via acquisition or home grown low weights from birth, having every confidence that the higher prices can drive revenue higher for the small and large Cattle-beef producer. The stock market has soared beyond just about everyone’s expec-

132

Livestock Plus Inc.

tations since President Trump won and most everyone’s 401K plans are powering up and now the US Dollar is going south with the blessings of our own Federal Reserve and other Central Bankers around the world and already taken out the lows of this last year. Look for the US Dollar to drop for most of this new year and for Cattle prices to pleasantly surprise you. Expand your borders and swing for the fence to take advantage of American leadership in many areas of commerce domestically and overseas. If you are a bona-fide livestock producer and would like to receive on a complimentary basis for 45 days my daily and weekend ‘Livestock Report’ that includes Fat and Feeder Cattle Valuations, and Lean Hog valuations, as well as Beef and Pork cutout valuations from my office here at Fox Group [clearing through RJ Obrien] here at the Chicago Board of Trade then please call Ms. Michelle White at 312.756.0931 and let her know. And remember, hedging livestock with Chicago Board Cattle or Hog futures or the purchase and sale of grain, energy or financial future or option contracts still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt, or any other holdings they might have. Always consult with your most trusted advisors before taking on risk, whether the intent is hedging or not. n

SAV Blackcap May 3175

Pictured as a wet 2-yr-old this cow is quickly establishing herself as one of the best donors to walk our pastures. This granddaughter of the al-time highest income producing cow in the angus breed SAV Blackcap May 4136 is laying down a track record of her own. Her first son to sell was our 3rd high seller in the 2016 sale and has been used in many commercial as well as some registered herds in the northern U.S.

These 1682 cattle are some of the best you will find, with 1682 semen in such high demand & limited supply, we feel these flush brothers hold as much value from a semen sales standpoint as any calf around.

Starting out with a modest 70 lb. bw & recording a 205 of 920 lbs. This calf poses real world fleshing ability in a correct made package. He is the most powerful of his 4 flushmate brothers but what will truly sell you on this mating is when you see his sisters. They are simply outstanding. We feel the combination of this mating will be a genetic platform that you can make daughters to retain that are truly profit driven cattle.

So, this month I wanted to write about the most influential person in my life, I like to joke that he drives me to drink often times right in the middle of the month (deadline for LPI) but I couldn’t imagine my life without him... my dad. Many of you know Mike Sorensen as a friend, a ringman, or as the heart and soul of this magazine. I wanted to share a couple stories from my childhood and also from my siblings, Ray “Bubba” Sorensen and Mandi (Sorensen) Eisbach. Most of my very favorite memories were at my grandparents, Ray and Eileen Sorensen. Our show cattle were at our grandparents farm and believe me, we used that to our benefit. Many times in the summer Dad would drop us off in the morning to rinse and walk before it got too hot. Every time Dad would say, “You do not need to go in the house and bother your Grandma.” Literally every single time we would take turns watching to see when Dad left the driveway, and Grandma would be waiting at the door! It was so exciting, getting snacks and timing it so we could be back in the barn before Dad got back. Bubba’s comments... “I have great memories of shows all over the Midwest, especially the Iowa Beef Expo every year. We were always trying to stay warm while “stimulating hair follicles” and waiting for Dad to leave so we could go back to goofing off or trying to get to the warm side of the barn to talk Dad into buying us something from Muir’s. I wouldn’t trade all the years of freezing temps, getting drug all over while breaking the cattle to lead, and the tough breaks that come with showing, for anything... thanks Dad, for the experience, you’re a true friend of the entire livestock community.” Mandi’s comments... “I didn’t show cattle as long as Heidi and Bubba, but I still have many fond memories. I have always admired dad’s knowledge and dedication to the cattle industry. As an example, it’s this same dedication he had ensuring the safety of his semen tanks, and their contents, as we drove down the road to our next destination. Keep in mind, my seatbelt was being used to secure the semen tanks while I, a little girl at the time, sat unsecured next to it! Years later, I’m still trying to explain to my kids what Papa had seatbelted in the backseat of his truck. Fun times Dad!” No matter our childhood memories, one thing is always a constant, our father’s commitment to our family and an industry that has given us such lasting, incredible memories. Dad, I’m grateful for long hours in the barn, and with you. You are an inspiration to your grandchildren and children. Congratulations again on being named the “Friend of the Iowa Beef Expo.” We all think it’s well deserved. Please continue to keep our nation and our military in your prayers. Travel safe to all the expos this month, and I can’t wait to catch up with many of you at the Iowa Beef Expo! Heidi Sorensen Rohrig • 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com www.livestockplusinc.com
