1. Yardley Bulls have eye appeal and conformation to sire calves that will top the market with performance and growth to push down the scales. Feeders want Yardley sired calves because of their eye appeal and gainability 2. Their heifer calves will be the best cows that you have ever owned. 3. These bulls are grown in big lots where they get plenty of excercise. They winter mostly on hay so they can live on grass. Many buyers tell us they like our bulls because they, “don’t have to pamper them.” Performance comes from their ability to convert forage. 4. Our focus has always been on our maternal traits and cow families. We have AI’d for 52 years selecting the best bulls we can find, it shows in these bulls. They are solid footed, big topped, stout, and good looking. Selection emphasis is placed on fleshing ability and performance to excel on the range, in the pasture, and feedlot. 5. Our cattle have natural fleshing ability to stay fat on grass. Our cows take care of themselves wintering on desert winter range without any hay and calve unassisted.

MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mikelpi@yahoo.com
Greetings, I spoke too soon in my greetings last month. December took a turn for the worse, but I guess if you are from Iowa; get ready, you have a fiftyfifty shot of crap weather. Let’s hope January and February will turn out nice. Well folks, as of now, Dixie and I are Covid-19 survivors. I could go into a long drawn out description of my experiences, but they are boring, and no one wants to hear more Covid crap. One nice thing that I got from it was some sympathy from our kids, let’s just say sympathy from a distance. We also had lots of offers to help, but didn’t want to come visit, imagine that. I have been looking for good food stories and not really coming up with new stuff. Well, Covid came through for us in the food department. Obviously, at the start of covid we had no appetite, but I soon started getting sort of hungry. All three of my kids and their families did their part at keeping us fed. First, Heidi and Mat. Their contribution to our recovery efforts was ham balls, cheesy potatoes and cookies. Matt is the ultimate cook with pork and his grill. Those ham balls were deadly good. I made one mistake when they asked how many we wanted, I only said a couple. I should have said a couple dozen! They did end up bringing three ham balls (about a pound a piece) and they didn’t last six hours. Then, Heidi prepared the best cheesy potatoes. I asked for a couple helpings, again a mistake! Always round up by two or three times, they can be reheated. I’m not much of a cheese person but these cheesy potatoes hit the spot perfectly with the ham balls. The nutritional push from this family was sure welcomed. Homemade cookies completed the meal. Next, I have heard my son say several times that his wife Maria (Runt to me) makes the meanest roast ever. It’s hard
to beat my mom’s roast and potatoes but Runt came as close as anybody has. As we talked on the phone, they asked if they could bring us anything. My kids should never ask that question, I get scolded by my wife for saying sure. I said have Runt make me a roast. She did it. She has this recipe that makes a sauce that will make you bark at the moon. I will find out what all she does to it, its deadly. Then, because she knows I like potatoes, she threw some of them in and cooked ‘em in that sauce with the roast it was unbelievable. Once again, that didn’t last long. It was an awesome roast and potatoes. Then, Runt’s kicker was deviled eggs. Deviled eggs do not last long at this place. We eat them like there will never be another one made, almost till we founder. Runt also chases all this with a special popcorn that is candied up with powdered sugar, M&M’s, and pretzels. I just sit and eat it ‘till it is gone. Again, thanks for the nutritional uplifting Because of the timing of our covid experience, our Christmas was put off a few days. Seems no one wanted to visit us on Christmas with Covid. Our Christmas all started on New Year’s Eve with one family coming at a time, just because Dixie and I were out of energy and wanted to have a little slower pace. Last, but certainly not least, Mandi’s family contribution to the sick and unhealthy was breakfast. They were up early and ready to go and she said she would bring a breakfast casserole on their day for Christmas. She has been

NEWS RELEASE
Sarabeth Decious IOWA FOUNDATION HEIFER PROGRAM 2021 WINNER SELECTED Contributed by Norma Bolton for IBBC Heifer Project selection team Sarabeth Decious, daughter of Peter and Kelly Decious, of Tracy, Iowa has been chosen as the 2021 recipient of three registered Simmental heifers awarded by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. Initiated in an attempt to help young Iowans begin foundation beef herds, this is the eleventh year of the Iowa Foundation Heifer Program. Sarabeth was chosen from a group of very well qualified

her parents and her older sisters, Taylor and Raegan, on a farm near Tracy. She is currently serving as team captain of the Marion County Livestock Quiz Bowl Team. Sarabeth is a member of the Iowa Junior Beef Breeds Association, the American Jr Hereford Association and the American Junior Chianina Association. She has participated at local, regional and national events. Her recommendations describe her as a student with leadership qualities whose work ethic and aptitude are very obvious in her responsibilities at school, community and church. She is a competitive, hard-working, enthusiastic young lady, with a positive attitude. She has a passion for the cattle business and has chosen Simmentals as her breed of choice. She is excited to begin her duties as the new owner of three Simmental heifers. The heifers were purchased from VanAernam Simmentals (Gale and Andy VanAernam, Exira, IA) by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. At the end of 5 years, when she graduates from high school, Sarabeth will help further fund the project by contributing $6000. Sarabeth and her family will be honored at the grand finale of the evening at the IA Beef Expo Annual Kick-off Party by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council as a future seed stock producer. Awards are also presented to the Friend of IA Beef Expo, Purebred Seed Stock Producer of the year and (L to R) Gale Van Aernam; Commercial Seed Stock Bernie Bolton; IBBC Seedstock Rep., Producer of the year. Sarabeth and Andy Van Aernam. The potential of the cattle industry today is strong. Beef has always been the preferred protein source. Exports continue to grow around the world. There is something for everyone from the commercial to the purebred breeder at the Iowa Beef Expo. It is an event not to be missed. n

"Greetings" continued from pg 4
INFO@ORIGEN-BEEF.COM
doing this for several years and this ol’ boy kind of looks forward to it. The ingredients: shredded potatoes, eggs, a pound of bacon. I’m guessing if I was to make it I would add some onion and possibly some Baldrige seasoning, but nevertheless, it was awesome, and I ate it like it was my job and enjoyed it. Then for those that didn’t do casserole, she brought homemade cinnamon rolls. While I was consuming some casserole, the cinnamon rolls seemed to disappear, and fast! I was kind of looking for a cinnamon roll chaser, didn’t happen. Mandi’s extra kicker is dessert and it was Caramel Chex mix. You want to talk about a true old favorite, you cannot walk by Caramel Chex mix without a handful. All in all, we had as good of a late Christmas as we could. We had lots of nutrition and at a little slower pace. Looking forward to Christmas 2021. This closing is hard. I pray to our good Lord; Please can you help us get through this Covid pandemic, violence, and unrest in our world. I pray for all our first responders, our police, our fire fighters, and please fix the corruption in our capitol. Thank you to our military and their families for their support. Lord be with us. God Bless America

These fancy Angus females are all bred to some of the most elite sires in the country such as Wall Street, Home Town, Allied, Enhance, and Schiefelbein Showman (our record setting $125,000 bull). They are due to start calving early this spring. ✦ ✦ ✦ This year we are selling a truly unique donor prospect Frosty Elba 19. This easy fleshing daughter of Acclaim is incredibly thick, exceptionally deep, and has tons of rib. Her full brother was the $27,000 Schiefelbein Endgame 99 who sold to Genex. Her dam is a second generation donor and stems from our most prolific and genetically powerful cow family. She sells bred to GAR Home Town.

COMMENTARY
Lefty’s Logic by Eric Lee
This past weekend, Luke and I were walking through replacement heifers and decided to get a handful in and wash and clip them. A couple of these heifers were some of our favorite calves from this past fall. They were just maybe greener or slower maturing than those that sold. Several had not been touched in over 60 days. They were yak haired and had that grime right down to the hide. It took some substantial Gordon Leader: (402) 388-4949 elbow grease to get them clean. It was like that first time you clip out Mark Leader: (605) 660-1933 70 – 2 Year Old Bulls a baby and finally get to see what’s under all that shag. The good 25 – Yearling Bulls 55368 Hwy 12 • Crofton, NE thing about it is we were dealing with heifers that have been broke and know how to stand. There was no dodging random kicks or trying not to gouge as they randomly blow their top. It really is like starting with a blank canvas. It always amazes me how much a heifer can change in a matter of an hour. It really helps get me excited for Selling by Live Auction at the Ranch the calves that are getting ready 2 Miles East of Crofton on Highway 12 to hit the ground. Every year you hope your calf crop is better than or Bid Online at DVAuction.com the last. If these coming calves can be better than the heifers we just washed and clipped it will (712) 464-7407 be a very exciting year! Vince Collison, DVM I am also very excited to work into spring sale season. Jane Collison, DVM With crop carryover coming in lower than expected and Tim Collison, DVM rallying prices on the board, I am optimistic this will be reflected in our spring sales. Please do not hesitate to contact BOVINE EMBRYO me or any of the LPI family with any of your bull buying or TRANSFER SERVICES selling needs. As always thank you and God bless. Cow Contentment is a Good Thing by Kris Ringwall, Beef Specialist, NDSU Extension Service Access to the proper feed, good water and a reasonable space that has wind protection will keep a cow content. Although the feel of spring actually is not in the air, the ending of winter is starting to be noticed. The air occasionally has some warmth, and those springlike snows are popping up here and there. What really is important is that the anticipation of spring brings the anticipation of new life. Along with new life comes that feeling of renewed energy and the desire to restart and keep everything going for another year. Life is good. It may not be easy, but it is good. At this time of year, the cows are calving or very pregnant, so the feeling of contentment is very prevalent within the cow herd. If one never has experienced the pleasure of walking among a herd of very pregnant cows, ewes or other ruminants, there is a palpable feeling of contentment, a pleasurable waiting moment. This is where that sixth sense of true animal husbandry is at its best. One knows the cows and the cows know you. Some would argue that a cow is pregnant or not, so simply open the gate to the proper pen. However, there are very obvious levels of pregnancy, at least from a male perspective. Early on, at least to the naked male eye, it is difficult to visually determine which cow is pregnant. In fact, even those who excel at palpation must admit that occasionally a pregnant

cow slips by. For those who depend on more visual methods, such as ultrasound, a very spry calf could be hiding out in the vast outreaches of an extended uterus to try to avoid detection. As time moves on and the cows approach their due date, the third trimester starts to have a very large impact on the cow. Depending on several factors, most cows handle pregnancy well. Access to the proper feed, good water and a reasonable space that has wind protection will keep a cow content. Then there are those more difficult moments when a cow is not content because something is wrong. In a recent conversation with the ranch manager at the Dickinson Research Extension Center, he noted that two cows had slipped their calves. There is nothing more frustrating than to be feeding a set of cows when an unsightly lump of out- of-place material catches your eye. At first, not much notice is made, but as one gets closer, the lump of material soon takes on the image of a premature calf that is frozen to the ground with no mother in sight. The cow simply left, leaving behind a hairless, alien-looking thing that one knows was a developing calf. However, life goes on and the area is cleaned up to the extent possible. Unfortunately, the cow will show up open in the spring and be sold. However, for now, she will slip back into the herd to be hidden by all the other increasingly pregnant cows that are chewing their morning cud contently. Some would say the cow should be sorted off and separated, while some never have tried to find a cow that has walked away from a calf and dissolved into the mass called a cow herd. The identification of a recently calved cow is nearly impossible. Of course, if the cow was sick, running a fever and off feed, she may stand out, but for the most part, the occasional aborted or even early calves simply are dropped and left. Perhaps the cow looked back but there is no guarantee. In reality, there really isn’t much we can do because cows sometimes abort. However, keeping the abortion rate low is critical. For those producers who use the North Dakota State University Extension Service’s CHAPS management program, the precalving death loss (abortions) is at 0.68 percent. The number is kept low by having excellent prebreeding vaccination programs, good health protocols within the herd, and quickly removing and cleaning up aborted calves and membranes. However, cows still abort. The causes generally are environmental or the calf was deformed for some unknown reason. Always keep in mind that consulting with the herd veterinarian is critical for monitoring potential causes and herd follow-up care. Prevention also includes handling the cows carefully by moving them only when needed, vaccinating for scours with care, not rushing anything and really trying to stay on top of ice or other environmental issues, such as hills and steep slopes that may cause a cow to slip. The prognosis for a cow down on the ice is dismal at best, and putting cows in hip slings is challenging. Again, last but not least is nutrition. Now is a good time to re-evaluate your nutritional plans with your nutritionist. The calf competes directly for space in the cow, so feed quality is important. May you find all your ear tags. n

You will find that there is truly a difference in the type of bulls we use in our program. We breed cattle based on how they perform in the real world and are maternally focused and profit driven. We pay close attention to each cow family and how they perform against one another. We structure our breeding program off balance, use multiple-trait selection, and understand the importance of having the right type of cow that thrives in a forage-based environment.

THE Land Guy
January 2021
Stay up to date with the latest market trends in farmland.
David Whitaker • Broker/Auctioneer
Farmers National Company • www.FarmersNational.com • (515) 460-8585 • DWhitaker@FarmersNational.com 2020 Farmland market went out on a high note. Last year we saw just shy of 800 (72,974 acres) auctions in Iowa. The statewide average at auction for all ground was $7,096/acre ($101/CSR). High Quality ground averaged $9,467/acre, Medium quality ground averaged $5,903 acre and low-quality ground averaged $4,057/acre. 2021 looks to be starting even stronger. There is low inventory of land on the market and as such supply and demand will warrant higher land prices. There are still buyers that are trying to lock in low interest rates, swap ground utilizing the 1031 exchange and buyers are looking for a 2.5 – 3% rate of return on their money. Crops have rallied to a level we haven’t seen since 2014. If you have been thinking of selling… now would be the time. Happy New Year from “The Land Guy”!
The Land Guy
Results from the 92 Sales (8,733 acres) this last month have the average for the state at $8,832 ($119/CSR), high quality ground at $10,162/acre, and medium quality ground averaging $7,860/acre. Low quality ground is averaging $4,733/acre.

The Road Ahead for Cattle Markets by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade
The Federal Reserve has been saying for over 2 years that they want more inflation and they would manage monetary policy to achieve same. Corn and Beans have launched into the stratosphere and Diesel and Crude are at 44-week highs. Bitcoin has gone from 4000 to 43000 in short order. Gold has run and proved Alan Greenspan to be wise on ‘gold-buying advice’ a few years ago. It is now early February and Biden and Kamala are in charge with Schumer and Pelosi to do their bidding and hand out trillions of dollars of money in exchange for who knows what from ordinary citizens who accept the money. Throw all these ingredients into a big pot and boil it and you have gourmet ‘Stagflation Soup’, meaning stagnant economic growth with rampant inflation. Now go back and remember good ol’ Sam Elliott’s powerful voice-over the last year or so when he says ‘Beef, it’s what’s for dinner’. Conclusion? If Corn and Diesel and Crude and Copper and Bitcoin are at 44 month to multi-year highs and winter is here to drive carcass weights down and finally that USDA Choice Beef markets are fire-sale then why wouldn’t risk taking Grandma’s invest in Cattle ranches or the Fat Cattle on the Board with requisite risk management? Exactly. If you ascribe to the theory that the trillions of dollars of debt that Bush, Obama and Trump and now Biden have piled up will have to be inflated away then you may want to sit down with your banker and see about hitting the sale barn hard and buying the lower weights to finish and grid out early spring. Remember the staggering high prices of beef at Krogers and Jewel-Osco last year not long after the pandemic hit? Who’s to say the Chuck, Round and Brisket and Flank does not go right back up there and even higher?
Got milk? Of course you do. Got cattle? Probably not. Heard the old saying in the north that high vorn makes high fats? Look, Packers are clever fellows. They of all people know that once funds pile into Cattle futures like funds have done so in corn and soybean futures that it could be lights out. Consider buying April Fat Cattle 25 to 50 loads at a time and own the March 112 Puts for an airbag to help manage some of the risk of loss in Cattle. Questions? Talk with us. Call Michelle White @ 312-756-0931 here at the Board of Trade building where our cattle hedging office is and she’ll get some more information out to you. Again, hedging of your Cattle operations is usually best achieved by forward contracts and the use of the Board livestock instruments in Chicago. Education is key and so we encourage you to reach out to us at the Board in Chicago and ask for available information that can be shared with you via your iPhone or iPad. If you are already a bona-fide livestock producer you can probably think of many times over the years that you wish you had used airbags to hedge your hedge on your Cattle on the dirt or simply taken the hedges’ off. If you would like to get a new perspective on livestock hedging by integrating USDA wholesale beef pricing and Dressed Steer cash models and you would like to receive on a complimentary basis for two full months by email both ‘Daily and Weekend ‘Livestock Reports’ that includes Fat and Feeder Cattle Valuations, and respective beef cutout valuations then call Michelle White at call her at 312.756.0931 and share your email address with her in confidence to receive the Advisory by email. And remember, hedging livestock with Chicago Board Cattle futures still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt. n

Hats Off by Austin Sorensen
I don’t know about anyone else but, January/February to me just screams calving season! We are flying right into the month of February and I thought this month it would be fun to talk a bit about some little things that my family has found handy when calving cows. One thing that I think is easy to overlook is facilites. Now, don’t think I mean you need a high dollar set up because you truly don’t but, I think there are three things that are important when setting up your calving facility. Clean, dry, and functional. Clean is a huge thing in our barn. We try to keep a 10” lime pack for a floor and then deep bed over the top with corn stalks. This helps prevent a lot of issues like navel ill. Dry is another big one. To me, that goes back to the clean aspect again. If you can keep your barn or calving lot dry, those babies will be off to a lot better start. Last, but not least is functional. If you can make a calving facility so that it is relatively easy to clean out, rebed, and pen cows, suddenly calving season is a lot more fun! The next best tip I ever received as a young man for calving was to have patience. If you see the water bag present, then you need to give that cow/heifer time to dilate and have that calf. Granted, this is assuming presentation is correct. With heifers, if everything looks correct when that water bag presents, I like to give them an hour to an hour and a half. On cows, I usually like to wait 45 minutes to an hour. If possible, it is best to stay back and not interrupt them during this time. (Barn cameras are a savior for this.) If you do have issues beyond this time period, then you probably need to get the female in and check. For this, we like to have palpation sleeves, lube, stainless steel chains, disinfectant, and a calf jack. If you do need to assist at this point, it all comes down to comfort level in how far you are willing to go. Hopefully everyone works with as good of vets as we do and feels comfortable making that call if necessary as well! These are just a few little tips and tricks we use during calving. Although I don’t feel as if I have even scratched the surface on this topic, hopefully you can take something away from it! This month my hat goes off to you “all night cow checkers.” I hope your calving season is off to a smooth start and continues on that way! God Bless, Austin Sorensen

COMMENTARY
Van Aernam’s View by Andy Van Aernam
I’ve never been a hunter or a trapper but for some reason Clayton has decided that he is going to try to get cast on the next series of Mountain Men on the Discovery channel. I’ve avoided letting his sister join dance with the excuse that organized dance is the only activity your daughter can participate in that is more costly than showing livestock. In listening to my comrades that haven’t been able to dodge that bullet, I firmly believe that to be true. But let me tell ya, setting up a professional multi-species fur trapper ain’t exactly free either… But hey, it beats the hell out of having him sit in his room and play Fortnight or whatever other mind-numbing video game far too many of his peers are into. And occasionally, he even takes his little sister. So, it gets her out of the house and qualifies as a team building exercise for the staff around here! He had devised a plan to make it rich trapping coyote, beaver, and raccoon. He’d thoroughly researched it on the YouTube and there was no way it wasn’t a sure thing. I am a sucker for the adventures of my kids so off to the local trapping supply outlet we go. The owner read me like Mike Sorenson at a show heifer sale and knew he had an overly proud dad on the line. Roughly $500 or so more than I planned to spend later we have a vast array of foot traps, conibears, snares and little jars of potions that range in fragrance from black licorice to the most vile combination of rotten unimaginable that you can picture. I warn you, know which you are opening before you take too big of whiff. New trapping trinkets in tow we hopped in the old Suzuki Samurai and headed into the wilds of the creeks and 14 trees in the neighborhood that haven’t been bulldozed to plant another 3 rows of corn and began our quest to rid Audubon Township of vermin. We not so skillfully set traps and snares and smeared gag reflex inducing pastes into holes in the ground and under rocks and onto trees. Then we waited and checked... and waited and checked... and waited some more and checked some more. Patience is a virtue, and dad’s time is free… It’s easy for me to get caught up in the fact that the list of chores to be done is endless. The amount of time that needs put into sale cattle and show heifers is never enough. But I tell you, it has been a great deal of fun. The look of pride on Clayton’s face when he caught that first beaver was priceless. The pride his sister had when she told her mom “I didn’t even cry!” and watching Clayton bring my widowed father-in-law, Frank, along on a lot of his adventures is therapeutic on a lot of different levels. The catch is up to 18 coons, 11 opossum, 6 skunks, 3 farm cats, 2 beaver, and the angriest badger you’ve ever seen in your life. The work will never be done. But their childhood won’t last forever. Go join them on their adventures. Help them live their childhoods to the fullest. I promise you won’t regret it. n

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION
Join the Herd Wow! Who would have guessed that the year 2020 would become extremely trying and uncertain at times. I know a number of you would agree, that the end of 2020 seemed to not be a reality. One reality is the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association can boast numerous successes in 2020. All efforts would not be possible without your continued support, through membership. The 2021 membership year started in October, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t still “Join the Herd”. Being a member of an organization like the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is about joining and committing to something bigger than the cattle in your pens at home. Joining the Herd is about supporting, providing feedback, and fighting to help our industry improve on a daily basis. Your staff and membership team at ICA are here to work for you. Much of the work that has happened over the past year has been over
the phone or on a virtual platform. As we look forward to what this year’s banquet season and county board meetings could look like, please contact your membership team to see how we can help. Banquet season is upon us again and looks to be a bit challenging. There is some definite uncertainty about what counties should do and can do this winter season. Much of this decision comes down to the comfort level of your board, your county public health team, and the Governor of Iowa. If you are looking for a way to contact your local public health agency please use the link https://bit.ly/3miXoeJ. Here you will find all of the public health agencies in the state of Iowa, and they should be able to help you with decisions related to having the public in your event. We know many county organizations have already made the decision to cancel or postpone, but that doesn’t mean
you can’t still carry on your traditions. Banquets are a time of celebration with friends and fellow cattlemen and women. Memberships are sold, scholarships might be given out, and friends catch up on the trials and tribulations of 2020. Some of these things can still be done, just in different ways. Membership calls, facebook posts, online fundraising, and many other things can be utilized to help keep your 2021 activities moving. One tradition that won’t change is the importance of your membership investment and how it’s used to advance Iowa’s beef business. By “Joining the Herd,” your membership is the driving force behind our continual commitment to work on behalf of all of YOU. If you have questions about ICA, how to join or become involved, reach out to one of our membership coordinators or call ICA at 515-296-2266.

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION
ICA Events Every year the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association hosts a variety of low cost, educational, advocacy and leadership focused events for our members. With each event we host there are a couple common goals: • Bring topics in front of our members that need awareness and in turn can help improve their operation. • Inform producers on ways the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is advocating for them on the state and national levels. • Provide additional value to your ICA membership. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear an update from the Iowa Beef Industry Council and how they are utilizing checkoff dollars to promote beef. Throughout the forums, attendees will be able to network with trade show vendors and sponsors. So mark your calendar for our upcoming Cattle Producer Forums. While the goal is to be face-to-face, we will be evaluating the COVID environment closer to the event
date and may change to virtual format. In the event that we aren’t able to host in person, look out for further updates.

ICA welcomes 26 to YCLP The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is pleased to announce the 2021 Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program (YCLP) class. This class represents each sector of the beef cattle industry, with a variety of professional and educational expertise. Together, they share a common passion for the beef cattle industry and the legacy that transcends generations.
ABOUT YCLP:
The goal of YCLP is to develop future leaders of Iowa’s cattle industry. The program provides an opportunity for participants to learn the structure and function of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. Participants undergo training and educational seminars to enhance their communications skills, strengthen their awareness of the legislative process, and diversify their knowledge of the Iowa and U.S. beef cattle industries. The 2021 YCLP class will also lead recruitment efforts for www.iacattlemen.org
Iowa’s premier fed beef competition, the ICA Carcass Challenge. This unique networking opportunity provides support for educational and leadership activities for Iowa cattlemen across the state.

Dearest Heavenly Father, Bring peace to our hearts Lord God. We know that we live in a world of sin, but sometimes it’s hard to watch the effects of that sin on our families and our nation. So we turn to you to ask for your guidance and your peace to fill our hearts and minds. We pray for our government, that they might seek to do your will and try to represent everyone in the country to the best of their ability. We pray for our families, that you protect them from sickness and keep them strong mentally as well. We pray for our farms and businesses, that we might prosper and make a difference in the lives of those around us. Finally, we pray for the faith to trust you in the good times and the bad. Remind us that nothing in all creation can separate us from your love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Give us the courage to share God’s love with others and help those in need whenever we have the opportunity. Thank you for always being there for us so that we might be a blessing to others. Amen. Hello Winter! As much as I love the beautiful white snow for Christmas, it sure adds that extra level of challenge when it comes to doing chores. Right now, our farrowing house is full and we even ventured into another breed this year at Rohrig Yorks & Show Pigs ...DUROCS! The baby pig pictures get me every time! The other night I saw a video my friend, Sondra Brancel of Next Generation Genetics, posted of her son, Bryce, and his bull calf, Bolt. It showed pics ranging over a few years. I’m not sure if anyone else has those soul deep connections with animals like I do, but this video had me in tears. It brought back all those old memories of all my show heifers, and even the last few years of the kids’ show pigs. These kids and animals grow up way too fast! If you get a chance to watch the video of Bryce and Bolt on Facebook, it illustrates such an incredible bond! I wish every kid had the opportunity to experience that kind of love and have the opportunities Bryce & Bolt got together. Thank you again Sondra for sharing!! We are definitely keeping busy at the Rohrig House! Tucker has been practicing the FFA Creed every moment possible, studying for finals and playing basketball. Taylor continues with dance, basketball and being my assistant (whether she likes it or not) quite often. Lastly, Treva continues to keep us always on our toes! Right now, she has mom a little nervous about her upcoming surgery for bilateral ear tubes. I know it’s a routine procedure, but there are extra precautions with her medical diagnosis of Down Syndrome. That being said, I realize I need to give it all to God and I will. Treva is just my baby (ooops! I mean big girl) and I want to protect her from absolutely everything, so mama bear is coming out a little! At Tuck’s last basketball game, Treva was over-the-moon excited when Papa (my dad) came to watch too! Not to mention, Grandma Kiki & Grandpa B (Rohrig) were also there sitting across the steps from where Dad and I were sitting. After about the third time of Treva going back and forth across the steps between them I said, “Treva pick a side and stay there!” My dad pipes up and says, “Oh she’s fine, leave her alone.” Are you kidding me?! My brother, sister and I can all attest to dad NOT ALLOWING us to get up from our seats anywhere... church, restaurants, etc. IF you attempted to get up EVER you got Dad’s crazy eyes and usually taken outside! If you ever need to see my father’s soft side, be sure one of the grandkids is around! Evidentally, the same rules do not apply! Please continue prayers for our military and our nation. WE CAN MAKE OUR PLANS, BUT THE LORD DETERMINES OUR STEPS. Proverbs 16:9 God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig • 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com

Help eliminate any unwanted oils and debris left over from show day fitting with Sullivan’s Break Away After Show Shampoo. This heavy-duty shampoo will wash away excess oils left behind from adhesive removers as well as any residue missed while breaking down your show day masterpiece. This shampoo also works great as a first-time shampoo to breakaway heavy dirt and grime. Not intended for daily use as it could cause drying to hair and skin.
•This halter features a slimmed down profile with 35% less leather coverage of the animal’s head for a much less obtrusive appearance, yet still maintaining all the needed strength. •Provides a “less is more” scenario, creating the image of a smoother, longer front-end extension to the animal. •No distracting buckle on the show side. Color matching hardware along with the Showman’s Texturized Grip.
