Why use Yardley Bulls
1. Yardley bulls have eye appeal and conformation to sire calves that will top the market, and performance and growth to push down the scales. Feeders want Yardley sired calves because of their eye appeal and gainability 2. Their heifer calves will be the best cows that you have ever owned. 3. These bulls are grown in big lots where they get plenty of exercise. Wintered mostly on hay so they can live on grass, many buyers tell us they like our bulls because they, “don’t have to pamper them.” Performance comes from their ability to convert forage, not from an excess of grain. 4. Our focus has always been on our maternal traits and cow families. We have AI’d for 49 years selecting the best bulls we can find. Selection emphasis is placed on fleshing ability and performance to excel on the range, in the pasture and feedlot, with eye appeal to be competitive in the show ring. 5. Our cattle have natural fleshing ability to stay fat on grass. Our cows take care of themselves wintering on desert winter range without any hay and calve unassisted on their own. If you want the best we have them In volume. our cattle In thIs year’s female sale went to 22 states, the bulls last year sold to 21 states and canada.

Greetings, I know I will probably have to eat my words, but we can’t beat this winter. As I write this, I am at the Iowa Winter Beef Expo, never in my life has the winter beef expo been this pleasant. Day one of the Iowa Winter Beef Expo 2017 is in the books. The excitement level coming in to the expo is always high, and this year is no different. I will have to say my stamina level 20 years ago was much better, though. I had a very nice time tonight eating my evening meal at one of my favorite spots in Altoona, Iowa, “The Big Steer.” Joining me tonight was Dusty and Norma Martin and Cody Crum. We enjoyed a couple adult beverages, and as usual my favorite Steak de Burgo along with the sweet potato casserole, and new to my favorites at The Big Steer was the potato soup. Not sure what they do to this soup but it was deadly. The de Burgo was just as good as always, seasoned and prepared to perfection, and the sweet potato casserole also deadly as usual. Great meal, great company, and the atmosphere was second to none. The Big Steer one of my top five dining experiences. If you are in my profession, and especially at Expo time, Campbell’s Concession’s is a lifesaver. Seems like all the sales start at eleven to one o’clock and that’s my feeding time. So I rush to Campbell’s grab myself a bowel of vegetable beef soup, every good red-blooded American boy loves a good bowl of vegetable beef soup. Four days at expo and four days of veggie beef soup. Thanks Campbell’s!

A farm childhood is a privilege experienced by only a handful of kids. We’re a unique breed, and I honestly don’t know how we got so lucky. Maybe we won a round of rock-paper-scissors in Heaven. Maybe we drew the longest straws. Maybe God knew that we wouldn’t feel alive unless we were surrounded by livestock, tractors, and dirt. I don’t know why we got to grow up alongside the cornstalks, covered in soybean dust and wood shavings, but I’m forever grateful that I was raised in a barn. As a child, I saw the world through a combine’s window. My springs and falls were spent in tractors, service trucks, and semis ‘helping’ dad in the fields. Growing up in these fields meant chasing whirlwinds. It was running down to the creek with my cousins to race our make shift boats (crayon-colored sticks) and making sure no one drowned. It was rides in the semi to the grain elevator where the receptionists would give us candy and tell my uncle how lucky he was to have such great helpers. It was sitting on the tractor seat’s arm as Grandpa pulled the auger cart, stopping occasionally to drink his coffee, eat his sardines, or climb down from the tractor to pick up an arrowhead he’d spotted from the cab. Mostly, growing up in the fields meant riding in the combine with Dad. I’d sit in his lap, and I’d shell rows of corn while listening to the men talk over their radios. I’d ride in the cab’s passenger seat, and I’d sit backwards to watch the hopper fill with grain, its mesmerizing flow eventually overtaking the back window. Most nights, I’d simply refuse to go home. “Just one more round,” I’d insist, as my mother waited for me at the end of the road. I’d fall asleep on the cab’s floor between my father’s feet as he worked until the dew fell. I’ve watched more sunsets from the combine’s windows than I can count. To this day, the combine’s cab holds more father-daughter conversations than our kitchen table. The time I spent in the fields and barns cultivated an inexplicably deep relationship with my family, especially my cousins. They were my first best friends. Because of our shared experiences, memories, and competitions, we share a perspective that few others could ever understand. The term “farm kid” calls to mind many stereotypes, and most of them are probably true. I rocked the farmer’s tan and baseball cap combination. I woke up before dawn and went to bed long after the sun had set. I slept on straw bales more than in my own bed. To me, my childhood was freedom. I flew down gravel roads on 4-wheelers, dammed up the creek to catch crawdads, and spent day after day surrounded by animals. My first companions were pigs, and I stood nose-to-nose with cows before I was able to walk on my own, but it wasn’t until I joined 4-H that my life began to revolve around livestock. Home became shaving covered concrete, the rattling of feed pans, and country music playing over a dust-coated radio. It was my time in the barn, the animals it housed, and the relationships it cultivated that made me into the person I am today. The barn shaped the way I understand the world. It’s where I learned life’s most valuable lessons. I learned how to appreciate a sunrise after a full morning of hard work. I understood the value of physical labor. After hours of scooping manure, wrestling lambs, and driving fence post, you learn to appreciate sweat and calloused hands. The late nights were taxing, but the endless time spent under the light of heat lamps, working tirelessly while singing along to a static radio, cultivated a sense of serenity. Most of my days out in the barn were spent alongside my brother. We worked side by side and grew closer because of it. Looking back on the partnership we formed, I remember laughing. We laughed a lot. We’d sing old country songs into our shovel handles

and throw marshmallows to each other, trying and usually failing to catch them in our mouths. More than anything else we talked and enjoyed the fact that we weren’t alone. We took comfort in having a confidant. That’s not to say we didn’t fight. Some of the worst fights are over what you’re most passionate about, and we both stood stubborn in our own opinions when it came to the animals we loved. We screamed at each other across the yard. Brushes were thrown. Show whips were broken. But, through all of it, we learned how to forgive. We learned how to cooperate and listen to the other’s perspective. We learned how to be wrong. Because of the space and time the barn provided, my brother became my best friend, and the bond we share has only grown stronger over the years. Because of my experiences raising and showing livestock, I learned patience and responsibility. I realized that hard work and dedication don’t always pay off, but that that’s okay because failure can be a more valuable lesson than victory. I learned how to collaborate with others to achieve a goal. I learned how to laugh in the face of great challenges, and I pushed myself to overcome them. 4-H taught me the power of a firm handshake and the importance of competition. It showed me how to win humbly and lose gracefully. It gave me the confidence to speak in front of thousands. I grew to understand the process of life. Because of 4-H, I believe

in myself. Out of all the lessons I learned from my time in the barn, two stand out above the rest. The first, is that it taught me to value life. I’ve seen piglets born. I’ve torn away amniotic sacks. I’ve watched creatures come into being and take their first breaths, steps, and drinks. I’ve also seen this life taken away. I’ve stood helplessly as my dad tried to revive stillborns—the ones that reached air moments too late. I’ve watched underdeveloped lungs refuse to work. Life has faded before my eyes, and no matter how many tears I cried, there was absolutely nothing I could do to fix it. Witnessing both births and deaths showed me how miraculous and genuinely awesome the gift of life is. I also realized its fragility and how easily it can disappear. It’s a precious something that I will never take for granted. The second, and in my opinion greatest, lesson the barn taught me was how to love. I knew that I’d have only six months with a 4-H pig. But I loved him anyway. I named him, fed him marshmallows and cookies, and napped with him every once in a while. We learn to trust one another. We sat in his pen, nose-to-nose, and enjoyed life together. Regardless of our limited time, I poured my heart and soul into him. I laughed with him, talked to him, cried with him and for him. If nothing else, my experiences with livestock taught me the beauty of reckless love—to love with abandon no matter the circumstances—because sometimes you only have a summer. I owe the agricultural community a debt that I will never be able to repay. It gave me my roots as well as my wings. It kept me grounded in my values while giving me both the skills and the strength I needed to succeed. It has made me everything I am and given me everything I have, and for that I will always be proud to have been raised in a barn. A special thanks to KT O'Farrell for letting us share her thoughts with you about being "Raised in a Barn." You can follow her blog at: thegoodthebadandthepetty.wordpress.com n

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things by Evan Rayl
With President Trump waiting until his very last cabinet pick to name his Secretary of Agriculture, farmers and ranchers may not have as much assistance from the federal government as they would like. Three Secretaries of Agriculture in a row, have been from the Midwest. That includes the most recent from Iowa, our ex-governor, Tom Vilsack, who was the longest serving Ag-secretary in history. Here’s a brief history of Sonny Perdue, who was chosen as the new Ag Secretary: he’s 70 years old, has a wife, four children, eight foster children, and 14 grandchildren. He has a Doctor of Vet Med degree from U of Georgia and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a Democrat prior to 1998. Georgia Senator, 1991 to 2001. Georgia Governor, 2003-2011. The USDA has nearly 100,000 employees working in hundreds of areas; but first the Secretary has to name 222 workers to departmental positions. In other news, Sen. Charles Grassley continues as the head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which means he will be in the news this year as the Senate committee looks at the person President Trump chooses as his nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court. It’s a recession when your neighbor loses his job, it’s a depression when you lose yours. Several years ago, I wrote an opinion about the coming of the 10,000 acre farm operations. No one disagreed with this opinion, even the foremost authority in this area, Neill Harl, who said, “He was going to write an article about the same subject, but I beat him to it.” Now, a recent article in “Iowa Farmer Today” tells how a Father and two sons are farming 12,000 acres with plans to add more land when a younger son finishes high school and agriculture college. Look for stories about larger and fewer farms as we move into the future.

At least for the time being, the increase of width of corn planters has been replaced by higher speed of travel of corn planters. Electronic planter units with greater accuracy and higher speed are taking the place of the larger units with slower speed. For years greater width of the planter was the way to cover more acres, but now, greater speed allows smaller units to cover more acres. Plus the new units traveling twice as fast means more business for the dealers. I see almost new conventional units will drop considerably in value. If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Quotes are all by Harry S. Truman Record warm weather has forecasters wondering about global warming this winter. About the time we start to think it is for real, we’ll have a winter we would like to forget. I have forgotten exactly which one it was, but it was around the year, 2,000. We had so much snow piled in the yard, we had to haul it out to the fields east and west of the buildings. n

Triangle J Ranch
Darby Line 308-627-5085
Here is a herd sire we have been searching for since we purchased W/C Lock Down a few years ago. When we saw him, we had to have him. He topped the Triangle J Ranch Sale this year. He was bid on by some of the top cattlemen in the nation, proclaimed by many to be the stoutest bull that has been produced in the Triangle J herd. 451D is an all purpose bull who moves out like a cat and maintains a lot of body and mass on the move. He is a sire whose numbers will enhance anyone’s program while still possessing a show ring phenotype that will satisfy the most discriminating cattleman looking to raise eye appealing progeny. He is one of the top herd sires to surface this year that will work on all Lock N Load, Lock Down, United and Dream On females.

COMMENTARY
Cody’s Column by Cody Crum
Hard to believe it is already time for the March issue! In March, the first thing that comes to my mind is March Madness! I mean who doesn’t love some college basketball come tournament time? Even a mediocre fan of NCAA basketball will tune in to games with it comes to the Big Dance. I believe I have mentioned it before, but I spend a lot of time on the road this time of year officiating college basketball. So, I am willing to bet, I get to see more basketball games than any one person can possibly need. Every night on the court is different. Some nights are well played games that are easy to officiate and then there are the other nights… that are, well… not so easy! Over the past couple seasons the NCAA has made an emphasis on “reducing physicality to create freedom of movement.” This year our primary focus has been on post play. Now, depending on what games you have seen this year, you may or may not think we have succeeded at all at this mission. Perhaps what makes these sorts of goals frustrating for all of us fans, players, coaches, and officials, is that this change cannot and will not happen overnight. Just like anything in life – and we as livestock producers may know this better

than some – change takes time! We all must learn to adapt to what is allowed and what is considered a foul. We realize that to reach that point, it is going to take a lot of work and effort from us as officials to call games as consistently as possible, night in and night out. But that is really all anyone wants right? Just like we expect a judge to pick a type and stick with it – we expect the officials to make calls and call them all night long, all season long, every game of the week, etc. Trust me folks, we want to be PERFECT and make every call correct! We train and educate ourselves, watch game film, learn from our mistakes - but just like you, we are all human! Every night, I and all officials across the country, suit up – you can bet your heart that we step on that court ready to call the game to our fullest potential. So, in the spirit of March Madness, I wish all of your teams best of luck this post-season! May this be the year your team wins it all! I am excited and honored to suit up for whatever post season games I am lucky enough to get selected for. Post season, typically, is some of the best and most exciting games of the year! Don’t expect to see me in the NCAA tournament quite yet but maybe, just maybe with a lot of hard work and a little luck it might happen one day. Be sure to say hello if you ever see me on the court. Try not to yell at me too much, especially if my wife is there, she doesn’t like that! God Bless, Cody

Travel safe to all the upcoming Beef Expos and don’t forget to I hope this finds everyone well! do a little pig shopping at all our upcoming sales, too! As always It’s been a rough winter in the Rohrig please continue to keep our nation and our nation’s leaders in your house trying to stay healthy! As most prayers with our military! Keep those CUTE FARM KID pictures of you know, from the last issues of the coming! magazine, our new baby girl, Treva, God Bless, has had a tough start with first being in Heidi Sorensen Rohrig the NICU the first 20 days of her life. 661.900.6004 Immediately after the February issue heidi@livestockplusinc.com went to print last month we were admitted to the hospital again with Treva for an additional 10 days. Treva had an infection in her blood which could have been life threatening without 10 days of IV antibiotics! By the grace of God we took her in for a fever which didn’t even last, but without the fever I wouldn’t have taken her in to the doctor. We are happy to have her home and enjoying her very 1st Iowa Beef Expo!! We would sure like to take a moment to thank absolutely every person who have kept Treva and our family in their prayers as well as all the visitors and people who have made meals for our family! We could not even begin to thank everyone enough. It truly means so much to all of us! It’s hard to put into words just how amazing our family, friends, livestock family and our St Malachy family has been through a tough time for our Little T, as well as the Big T’s JUG livestock waterers:Layout 1 8/11/11 8:50 AM Page 1 being without Mom for many, many days! It’s very emotional for all of us realizing just how blessed we really are ... God is so good! Treva has had lots of firsts but I love this picture of her brother and some of his buddies Treva’s Bodyguards from the kids’ amazing Tucker, Max, Jack, Hazin and Austin school, St Malachy. Just reminds me of her body guards! I can’t leave Treva’s big sister out because Taylor has been a God send with all of her mothering and protectiveness! I have to mention the Evans family from Creston that not only brought us lasagna the first go around in the hospital but recently brought us another lasagna for the second stay! April Evans had told us that she made the first lasagna, but that her daughter, Halle, made it even better! Of course, my husband pipes right up and says well we probably need to try both so we could judge, too! Since Halle’s lasagna is more recent in our minds I’d probably have to lean that way! Tucker claims Halle’s version is cheesier and ya just can’t go wrong with more cheese! Thank you to the whole Evans family!
