Why use yardley Bulls
1. Yardley bulls have eye appeal and conformation to sire calves that will top the market, and performance and growth to push down the scales. Feeders want Yardley sired calves because of their eye appeal and gainability 2. Their heifer calves will be the best cows that you have ever owned. 3. These bulls are grown in big lots where they get plenty of exercise. Wintered mostly on hay so they can live on grass, many buyers tell us they like our bulls because they, “don’t have to pamper them.” Performance comes from their ability to convert forage, not from an excess of grain. 4. Our focus has always been on our maternal traits and cow families. We have AI’d for 50 years selecting the best bulls we can find. Selection emphasis is placed on fleshing ability and performance to excel on the range, in the pasture and feedlot, with eye appeal to be competitive in the show ring. 5. Our cattle have natural fleshing ability to stay fat on grass. Our cows take care of themselves wintering on desert winter range without any hay and calve unassisted on their own.

MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com
Greetings Ok is it just me or is this winter colder than normal? Could it be that I’m getting a little thin skinned? I guess spring and heat is getting closer every day. The steak report this month comes from some really good friends and darn good chefs. Kevin and Toni Walters, “Bogies Steak House” is in my all-time top 5 steak houses, ever. I will have to admit I really messed up on my timing on this trip. Usually I get there at the last minute just before closing and sometimes my steak will be on the table ready to cut into, if I call ahead. The best part of getting there close to closing is I get to visit with Kevin and Toni, but this time they were so busy we hardly had a chance to visit. I think their grandchildren have a big part of this operation now, and would maybe fire grandpa and grandma if they stopped to visit with me. This time, Austin Brandt and I landed at Bogies in Albia, IA at five thirty like when normal people eat. I think everybody decided to come to Bogies at five thirty. A guy sitting at the table next to us asked where we were from, after telling him, he said that they had driven one and half hours to experience “Bogies.” He said he was told it was a great place to eat. After he had his meal, he said “they didn’t lie, this is better than great and you better bring your big boy appetite.” He was impressed to say the least! On to our experience. Toni always sits me clear to the back by the grill. I’m not sure if she just wants me back there so I won’t bother regular people or what. Its real interesting to watch the guys grill. Kevin and Toni’s grandson is one of the grillers. I watched him go to the cooler and toss a steak ten feet and it landed on the grill and he didn’t move it till he turned it. It doesn’t take much to impress me but these guys are like well-
tuned machines. Kevin convinced me to try the prime rib. I very seldom order prime rib, but if the head chef recommended it, don’t argue with the head chef. On to the meal, Kevin brought this plate of what appeared to be a medium rare roast and 2 pounds of potatoes. The prime rib was deadly prepared to perfection and I have to admit it was great. Austin, on the other hand, ordered a ribeye that looked deadly also. I almost wanted to eat off his plate, too! Have you ever been at a point when you would like to have more capacity so that you could totally over eat? I was there and no way could I begin to get around all the food that they had brought me. Now let’s talk taters. Not sure what they do but those taters were great! They have onions, peppers, and seasoning that makes these taters deadly. Oh and we can’t forget the granddaughter waitress, this young lady knew her stuff and man can she take orders and wait tables. Great job young lady. Kevin, Toni, and grandkids, it is always a pleasure to dine with you, don’t change a thing its awesome! Not often do you get a double food story but Dixie and I made our way to Austin, Minnesota and landed at “The Old Mill Restaurant.” I wanted something different so I quizzed our waitress Lynda to find out if they pulverized their pork or if they prepared with some flavor

I was visiting with a colleague discussing the tools for genetic improvement in our business when he made a profound statement. To paraphrase, he said, “When we are able to better utilize these tools for their purpose as genetic improvers Selling 35 bulls—yearlings and two falls—commercial open heifers, and a rather than marketing tools, we will select number of commercial and registered breds and pairs. then make substantial progress.” A picture is worth 1,000 words, but his statement may be worth dollars Bennett Fortress, PVF Insight, Connealy In Focus, EF Commando, Bear Mountain to your program! That’s no easy task! That’s why it is important to listen to those who directly affect your bottom line: your customers. If most of your bull buyers Kevin & Teresa Keyes keep their own replacement females, 16402 S. 111th St. | Springfield, NE 68059 should you focus on breeding cattle 402/677-0512 that excel in terminal traits? When you make breeding decisions, start with the end goal in mind. Emphasize the traits that are linked to the profit of your customers. If you try to put emphasis on every data point, it’s hard to focus on the necessities. Once you cover the major traits, then you can look to add merit to those that might be less valuable to your buyers. A maternally-focused program can still add carcass merit, and growth-oriented cattle can still provide calving ease and fertility. Balancing the key traits while not ignoring others will help us all continue to make genetic improvement in our cattle. No matter what type of cattle you produce, there is one trait COMMENTARY that I advocate to maximize in the operation. Diligent decision making in breeding to satisfy your market will lead to your ability to maximize the all-important trait: profit! As a seedstock producer and self-diagnosed cattle genetics junkie, I enjoy discussion on breeding, marketing, and the ins and outs of our great business. Don’t hesitate to reach out! n

The modern day seedstock producer faces many challenges without leaving the farm office. In particular, marketing and breeding decisions are more complex than ever. Our industry has embraced technology through adoption of data collection, EPDs, and now genomic testing. Technology has changed how we market our cattle as well, from advertising to auction platforms. While these subsets of seedstock production don’t seem like they should be related, marketing and “the numbers” behind genetic selection have become intertwined. Across all breeds, cattle with top-end EPDs will be promoted for having genetic superiority. Being the

How I See It by Austin Brandt
Another month of sale season has come and gone! Sitting here at the Iowa Beef Expo, manning the booth and pushing the magazine print deadline, I am trying to figure out where I’ve all been since the the last time I wrote an article. Good thing my phone and computer have my calendar in them because without that, I wouldn’t have a clue where I have been or what direction I need to be headed next. The last weekend of January I made a lap around Iowa working a few Simmental and Simmental Influenced sales for Iowa State University and the McConahay and Reck families. When February began, I found myself trying to get cattle ready to come to Des Moines for the Expo, and I went to Schooley’s in Bloomfield and Springer Simmentals in Decorah. Those sales were followed by a couple excellent Angus bull sales for Hoover Angus and Crooked Creek Angus. Spending all that time in all areas of the state and working with cattle of different breeds and types, just reminded me why I enjoy this business so much. Great cattle and even better, people! We may not all see cattle the same and we may not have the same end goal for our programs, but I can tell you that customer service and offering the best product we can is first and foremost with everyone that I have worked this past month or will work with in the months to come! Now, before Heidi makes me write her article too, I am gonna wrap this up and as always feel free to give me a call anytime. I am sure I will see you down the road! Austin

COMMENTARY
The Road Ahead in March for Fat and Feeder Cattle by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade
We reminded you all in last month’s article that this new year of 2018 would likely be inflation and sure enough the Commerce Department has since announced that inflation data went up 50% more than it was projected to go up, both with and without energy and food factored in. The inflationary data, that being the ‘wage growth component’ is now at 8 year highs’ and this inflation news is good news for Cattlemen yet quite possibly bad news for the children and grandchildren of Cattlemen. Why? Well the good news is that an acceleration of Choice and Select wholesale beef naturally can and is likely to make the value of the carcass worth substantially more and thus the ‘finish’ line and ‘bottom line’ may be sharply better than most Cattlemen expect right now. In fact, since your last issue of Livestock Plus we have now seen new multi-month highs’ on Choice Ribs, Loins and Flank and Fats and Fat Cattle have made new highs on the year, with plenty more upside on Fats and Feeders. [see charts below] The possible bad news? The US Dollar has lost over 75% of its value since the early 1980’s and if the Dollar loses another 75% of its value and purchasing power of the next 30 years then grandchildren now who grow up and marry and have a family may need 3 or 4 incomes in the household to buy what is being bought with today’s dollars. Fortunately, this new administration under Mr. Trump is about business and making America great again, something the Oval Office never seemed to make happen under the previous two ‘gentlemen’. The risk for us all is that inflation spikes and gets out of control, and drives up interest rates too high as buyers of US Treasury Bonds and Notes demand more interest to keep buying our debt and support our country’s debt.

On another note we would remind livestock producers that the potential combination of inflation and a possible drought this summer could drive up prices of feed rather dramatically and thus hedging feed costs for livestock will be important. There are ways to do that short and long term. Talk with us about possible vertical solutions to hedging the feed costs and equally important how to hedge your Cattle on the dirt in a more optimal way that factors in global growth and global inflation and wholesale meat.
The bottom line is that this new month of March and the quarters behind it will demand that livestock producers harness the power of the information highway of the internet and manage operations with an understanding that this global economy links just about everything together and homework will need to be done just about every other weekend to make sure you are positioned on the dirt and on the Board to optimize the financial plans of livestock operations and the generations behind you that will inherit in a decade or three. Talk with us at the number below. If you are a bona-fide livestock producer and would like to receive on a complimentary basis for 45 days my daily and weekend ‘Livestock Report’ that includes Fat and Feeder Cattle Valuations, and Lean Hog valuations, as well as Beef and Pork cutout valuations from my office here at Fox Group [clearing through RJ Obrien] here at the Chicago Board of Trade then please call Ms. Michelle White at 312.756.0931 and let her know. And remember, hedging livestock with Chicago Board Cattle or Hog futures or the purchase and sale of grain, energy or financial future or option contracts still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt, or any other holdings they might have. Always consult with your most trusted advisors before taking on risk, whether the intent is hedging or not. n

The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association bull and heifer evaluation program serves the needs of both the cattle seedstock producers and producers with commercial cow-calf herds. The program, which has been in place since 1985, provides seedstock producers comparison and bench marking information. The cow-calf producer benefits include access to superior genetics for their herd to enhance their bottom line. Bulls and heifers must meet strict selection criteria to be eligible for one of three ICA sales. The bulls are evaluated for carcass merit, reproductive soundness, structural correctness, disposition and growth. The top 75% of the evaluated bulls and heifers in each breed that meet the criteria earn ICA’s ‘Symbol of Excellence’ and are sold at the sales.

I grew up in agriculture, and naturally I became very passionate about the industry. As I grew up, I wanted to share my story with everyone around me. I took photos, shared them on social media, and struck up a conversation with anyone who wanted to talk about farming. Before I knew it, I was in college Both Sired by and surrounded by amazing peers DJF Borderline 815B who also were passionate about agriculture. I realized that my ‘advocating’ had hit a plateau, because the people I was surrounded by didn’t need to know my story and I stopped talking about why agriculture is important. Then an opportunity came along that stopped me in my tracks. I thought about it and even turned it DJF 636D down a few times, because I was 2018 NWSS Champion Optimizer Heifer scared. I was looking fear in the DJF 64E Open & Junior Shows face and letting it win. 2018 NWSS Reserve Champion Optimizer Bull Once I realize that my reasons He Sells in the Sale!!! for saying no were about fear, I decided that I wasn’t going to let that decision keep me from an Selling Bulls and Females • Purebred and Composite experience. Therefore, I competed in my first pageant in the Miss Sired By: Borderline, Whiskey River, Zodiak, Crimson America Organization. Tide, Nexus, Ribeye & Big Iron Of course it was scary! I legit * Bulls are performance tested and have Igenity numbers hadn’t performed a dance in three years and hadn’t done a dance solo Contact us for a catalog in about eight years. Then there was Watch our website & Facebook for sale updates the fitness portion, which you can just imagine how intimidating that www.SilverSpurSalers.com is! But then there was the interview, where I got to explain my passion for agriculture. My entire platform was around agriculture, and I got to talk to other contestants and supporters about my passion and even David & Janelle Frueh Scott & Stacy Liebhart brought visitors to my farm, some660.927.3600 660.562.3481 Scott Cell place they had never been before! 660.541.0361 David Cell 660.562.3480 Stacy Cell My new motto is that if you can silverspurmo@gmail.com walk on stage in a swimsuit, you can do anything. More importantly COMMENTARY my experience in pageants taught me how to reach out from my agriculture industry and really advocate to people who aren’t connected to their food. Fear could’ve kept me from meeting by Lexi Marek friends, traveling to new cities, serving my community, and from sharing my story. As 2018 approaches, remember that fear There is no doubt that life comes with choices is just a word and even make it a resolution to try something and risks. As we grow up, we encounter more that scares you; it may just be life changing! choices that need to be made and more risks Lexi Marek is the 6th generation on her family’s diversified that need to be taken. When making these decisions, there is livestock and grain farm from Southeast Iowa. A graduate of one common word that is attached to everything we do, fear. Iowa State University, she is now the Communication Manager Fear is actually important when making life decisions at FarmHer, based in Urbandale, Iowa. When fear holds you back from opportunities is when it ment of the FarmHer TV show called ‘The Next Generation’. becomes a challenge. Lexi enjoys traveling anywhere and everywhere but the end When going through life, my biggest regret is the chances or goal is always to end back on her family’s farm raising pigs and opportunities I didn’t take. Vitamin A Deficiency in Beef Calves Background
cows. Calves that are born alive from a cow with low vitamin A levels may be blind from microphthalmia (Figure 1) or constriction of the optic nerve, have deformed bone development or weak uncoordinated muscles leading to inability to nurse. If neonatal calves cannot acquire adequate Vitamin A, seizures or other neurologic signs are possible from increased cerebrospinal fluid pressure. Continued low vitamin A can lead to severe diarrhea that is often fatal. Additionally, these calves may be at risk for increased infectious diseases because of poor immune function.
Unlike many vitamins that are produced by ruminal bacteria, vitamin A is a requirement in the diet of cattle. Cattle convert carotene from leaves of plants to vitamin A in the wall of the small intestine. Vitamin A is necessary for vision, maintenance of epithelial tissue and mucous membranes, bone development, and immune function. Since vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin, cattle can store it in their liver when their daily intake is 3 to 5 times greater than their requirements. Mature cows can store up to 4 months of vitamin A in their livers under plentiful conditions. Therefore under ideal conditions cattle fed good quality hay during the winter will have adequate vitamin A levels from carotene in hay and accumulated liver stores. However, under less than ideal situations vitamin A supplementation may be required to maintain proper health and reproductive performance of the cow and normal development and health of calves. Drought conditions will decrease the amount of carotene in plants limiting the ability for cows to accumulate liver stores during grazing. Additionally, harvested forage during a drought will have extremely low carotene levels decreasing the ability of cows to consume their requirements during winter feeding. Another complicating factor is that many drought stressed forages have elevated nitrate levels. High nitrate levels are thought to lead to destruction of carotene and Vitamin A in the digestive tract and increasing requirements for Vitamin A by depressing thyroid function.
Figure 1, Calf born with microphthalmia. Photo courtesy of Dr. Terry Engelken.
Supplementation of Vitamin A
Clinical Signs
Late pregnant cows that are at risk of low vitamin A (following drought conditions, fed poor quality forage (corn stalks, stemmy or weather damaged hay) or cows with minimal green grass intake during the year) should be supplemented with vitamin A. Supplemental vitamin A can be fed to cows in liquid supplements, mixed with feed or added to salt. Vitamin A will degrade over time so prolonged storage of mineral mixes will have decreased vitamin A availability. Cows should intake 30,000 to 45,000
Common signs of vitamin A deficiency in cattle include reduced feed intake and growth, rough hair coat, night blindness, edema, diarrhea, seizures, increased susceptibility to infection, abnormal sperm, abnormal bone growth, low conception rates, abortion, stillbirths, and weak calves. Specifically for fetal and neonatal calves adequate vitamin A is critical. Low vitamin A can lead to calf loss from abortions and still born calves in pregnant

IU per head per day depending on stage of pregnancy or lactation. Vitamin A can also be administered via injection of a vitamin A product. Injection of vitamin A is a very efficient way to increase liver stores compared to oral supplementation. Cows can be injected with 1 to 1.5 million IU of vitamin A. However, for vitamin A deficient cows a single injection may not be sufficient. Cows that are already deficient in vitamin A have a reduced ability to store vitamin A in the liver. Therefore it may be necessary to repeat the injection monthly until adequate stores are achieved or sufficient oral supplementation can be attained. Calves that are born with signs of vitamin A deficiency due to abnormal development will probably not benefit from supplemental vitamin A. Abnormal bone development that constricts the optic nerve leading to blindness or muscle incoordination from spine abnormalities will probably not respond to vitamin A. Other calves that are not severely affected will benefit from an injection of supplemental vitamin A at birth (500,000 IU). Normal calves will be born with adequate levels of vitamin A but require additional vitamin A from consumption of milk that has satisfactory
levels of vitamin A. Therefore it may be necessary to repeat the injection of vitamin A in 2-3 weeks for calves nursing cows that are deficient in vitamin A. It is also important to remember that cows and calves that are deficient in vitamin A are probably deficient in other vitamins and minerals such as vitamin E, copper, manganese, selenium and zinc. Thorough evaluation of vitamin and mineral status should be done routinely. Liver biopsies can be performed on cows in mid to late gestation to assess and correct vitamin and mineral status prior to calving. Calves that die either from abortion, still birth or from other causes after birth should have a complete diagnostic work up including liver mineral and vitamin levels (especially vitamins A and E). Cattle producers can then cost effectively supplement the necessary vitamins and minerals to help ensure a healthy beef cow and calf.

Often we only think about herd bull selection just prior to the spring breeding season, but in all actuality it is really a 365- day a year project. The herd bull can be a costly investment in a cow-calf operation or a very profitable investment if you have done your homework. Bulls continue commanded a substantial investment whether you are a seedstock producer or a commercial cowman. The variety of bulls available and vast amount of information on each bull can be very overwhelming at times. So, step one is to find your direction. Are you a producer that sells calves at weaning time? Are you a producer that keeps all their own replacement heifers? Maybe you feed your calves through until to harvest? Okay, knowing your direction helps you focus in on the traits in a bull that impact your bottom line. An example, an operation that sells calves at weaning time and keeps replacement females might focus in on adjusted 205-day weights, weaning weight EPDs, maternal milk EPDs and longevity of the cow families in the bull’s pedigree. Maybe the operation is feeding the calf crop until harvest and maybe those cattle are going on the grid marketing system. Then marbling and other carcass traits should shift into focus and move higher on the list of ‘needed’ traits in the herd sire. Next, is there a particular weakness in your cow herd? Are you finding that your cows are ‘harder keeping’? Are you seeing structural issues in your replacements that shorten the longevity of your females in the herd? Is there a particular weakness in the calf crop? Do your calves need more frame to carry more pounds to market? Once you have surveyed the herd and calf crop, you can focus in on the things you need to improve when you are looking for that next herd sire. Now, are we talking about single trait selection when looking for a new herd sire? Absolutely not. We are part of a bigger picture, we also need to consider the feedlots, backgrounders, etc. who may purchase our calves. What is not as important of a trait in our own operation may be a big component of that producer who buys our product. Here is where the art of cattle breeding comes in. We need to select and improve important traits in our calf crop without losing ground on a balance of all traits. It is a tough juggling act and takes time, thus something we need to be attuned to all year long. Ask the neighbor what sire groups are working for him, watch the bull test stations for sires or producers that are consistently in the sales. It doesn’t need to be hours per day, but file those mental notes for when it comes time to get down to business and buy a new herd bull. The bottom line is that the herd bull(s) represent 50% of your calf crop year in and year out. If you think about the fact that most producers keep a bull until they are 4 or 5 years of age, with an average herd size of just 60 head, we could be talking close to 200 calves in his lifetime! If that one herd bull could add just 15 pounds of weaning weight to his calves and you sell calves at weaning time, a producer that didn’t do their homework could be leaving 3,000 pounds of calf on the table! At just $1.50 per hundred weight, that is $4,500…often times more than what we may have given for the bull! Give your local seedstock producers or livestock sales representatives a call for assistance in doing your homework. Every day is a bull shopping day! Plan ahead and always have a plan B ready This time of year we need to make sure our bull battery is charged for the upcoming breeding season. If you have some mature herd sires, we will need to be thinking of getting those bulls

David Whitaker • Broker/Auctioneer
Whitaker Marketing Group • www.IowaLandGuy.com January farmland prices were a bit lower with the average for January at $6,865/acre statewide. On the other end of the spectrum; we also saw the highest sale for the year in Sioux County, Iowa at $18,360/acre. We are hearing from bankers around the state that farmers are still in comfortable shape as they have bushel’d their way through 2017. Balance sheets are remaining strong but cash flow positions are tighter which is bringing into play more “Sale-Leaseback” options. This is where the farmer sells a parcel of land to an investor and then leases it back. A situation like this provides the investor instant cash flow and allows the farmer to reduce debt or inject cash into their working capital. This helps the farmer find a solution to a tight cash flow position and the investor an opportunity for a “solid earning asset.” There is still a low inventory of farmland, but there are some excellent properties coming up for auction in February.

Interest rates both short term and long term continue to rise. We have witnessed the FED committee expressing optimistic outlooks from employment to inflation and have watched the longer term Treasury’s climb over the last six months. All of these factors are raising the costs of financing the purchase of farm ground. However, cash rent levels seem to be staying relatively firm when compared to last year. This could maintain the enticement levels for cash buyers looking to diversify their holdings as the ROI is still fair. Ag land could be an alternative to other cash holdings in an investment portfolio as it is still viewed as lower risk. The farmers are maintaining their balance sheet positions as most had quality yields to offset the lower prices. However, the gap is widening between those who struggle and those who are comfortable. If a farm land investment is in your future making sure you have a solid farmer partnership will be key.

ANGUS BULLS performance tested & ready to go! OPEN ANGUS HEIFERS

SELECT GROUP OF COW/CALF PAIRS "Herd Bull" continued from pg 92 scheduled for their annual breeding soundness exam once the weather warms up. We’ve had a rough start to winter 2018, and nobody likes surprises the day before turn-out when Doc tells you that the bull didn’t pass the semen evaluation. If you have sold the mature bulls last fall and have decided to invest in some new younger herd sires, it is now time to be getting those bulls in good condition for turn-out. Remember the bull is a yearling and still has a lot of growing to do. Feed the young bull well prior to turn-out. The Beef Cattle Handbook suggests yearling bulls ideally should exhibit a body condition score of 5.5 - 6.5 on a 9- point scale at turn out. They go on to point out that once turned out, the yearling bull will be on the same plane of nutrition as the cow herd. Practical documentation has shown that bulls will lose 100-200 pounds during the breeding season.
Plan to use the new bull in a restricted 45 to 60 day breeding season for the first time. Observe him closely to be sure he is serving and settling females. While mature bulls that come out of the breeding season in good condition are often wintered on high quality forages, the yearling bull is still growing and may require some additional inputs. The Beef Cattle Handbook suggests feeding good quality hay at two percent of their body weight plus a grain supplementation to achieve a 1 1/2 - 2 pounds per day of gain depending on the magnitude of weight loss during the breeding season. Finally, it is good to plan ahead to have enough bull power. If it is a hot summer and you are planning on relying on yearling bull power, evaluate if having a back-up yearling or spare bull is a wise investment. Again, no one likes surprises and if you have a bull get hurt, say break a leg, what is your plan ‘b’. A good plan ‘b’ will keep your breeding season moving along smoothly. n

Cody’s Column by Tamar Crum
This month, I get to take over Cody’s column. Feel free to make your own inferences as to why this is the month he let me take over…if it has to do with the fact that he has been on the road with either basketball or sales for over a week now, then you would be right! In all the chaos, he did manage to not forget Valentine’s Day, and squeezed in a trip to a burger/milkshake joint before we headed to yet another basketball game. At the time I am writing this, he was home for a literal total of 20 hours before unpacking, repacking, and off again for the weekend. While being the one left at home can be super lonely and sometimes overwhelming, with the help of our amazing parents, Charlie (our dog) and I always make it through. My cousin told me she saw this quote somewhere and I think it is fitting, “Partnerships are ideally 50/50. But sometimes you have to suck it up and pick up the 80/20. Because your partner needs it and because that’s love.” I think maybe one of the biggest misconceptions I had going into marriage was the thought of having this perfect 50/50 team, where we each would always put in half the work. I am sure that 50/50 is what it evens out to…I mean I am not trying to keep count and probably for the sake of the relationship, keeping count would not be wise. But since we are on the subject, Cody, I did the dishes the last three times… Even so, there are weeks when I have to pull the 80 at home because Cody is on the road officiating or working sales. Just the same, there are weeks when Cody has to pull the 80, because I am in Columbia, MO at school. Yes officiating, working sales, and working on my Ph.D. are our “jobs,” but they are also part of a bigger dream that we each are chasing. Before we were even married, we each had our own life goals and we knew that going in. Being part of a team isn’t about just pulling your own weight, it’s also about pushing your teammate to their limits, doing everything you can to help them reach their dreams and their fullest potential because in the end that makes you both stronger. While being the one left at home sometimes isn’t so fun, picking up the slack while Cody works to unveil the big plans God has for him, makes doing the dishes just one more time not seem so bad. Until the next time…. Tamar

We are right in the midst of the Iowa Beef Expo as I write this article. In fact, our smallest social butterfly is sprawled across me in the hotel room as I attempt to type. Tucker and Taylor are a huge help with their baby sister, always carrying a million different bags or running to get something her and I need! Now, that being said, they do not love her talk/ yelling when they are attempting a little sleep! At home when it’s time for Miss Treva’s bed she is so happy when you wrap her up and shut out the light, but turns out my little creature of habit isn’t sold on the pack-n-play in the hotel room! So mom is typing a little slower attempting to look at the screen around my wiggling one year old! I recently found this quote on Facebook, written by Bryan Scavnak. Even though he directed it towards kids, I think it applies to EVERYONE!
yours any greener! That being said, I’m wishing everyone all the luck in the world at upcoming sales and shows! Thank you to all of the people that took time to stop and visit at the Iowa Beef Expo Booth! That’s my favorite part, I know I’m exhausted by the end but it’s so worth it! Also, a big thank you to everyone that dedicated their time and patience to make it all run smoothly!!!! Please continue to keep our military and our nation in your prayers! One more thing, CHOOSE KINDNESS! God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig • 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com •www.livestockplusinc.com
Some kids are SMARTER than you, Some kids have COOLER clothes than you, Some kids are better at SPORTS than you. IT DOESN’T MATTER. You have YOUR thing too. Be the kid that can GET ALONG. Be the kid who is GENEROUS. Be the kid who is HAPPY for other people. Be the kid who does the RIGHT THING. BE THE NICE KID.
-Bryan Scavnak I know it’s hard not to get wrapped up in someone else’s drama, but I sure wish we could all take this to heart and BE the people that choose to be KIND! Be genuinely HAPPY for others when it’s their turn to shine! Always, always remember everyone has their own struggles that you might not ever see, it may seem like things always work out for them or they always catch the lucky breaks, but you do not realize their inner struggles. Don’t be jealous... choose HAPPY! One of my very favorite quotes from the song “Biscuits” by Kacey Musgrave is ... Pissing in my yard won’t make
