Greetings, Ok, the usual weather report. I give up, this would be my report. From minus twenty with the wind chill, to fifty degrees above and sunshine. I keep referring to what my dad always said, if you don’t like Iowa weather wait five minutes it will change, but we darn sure don’t need sixtydegree swing. The National Western Stock Show Trip: Just a quick food report on the National Western Stock Show trip. Usually, I try to find a neat place to eat and then hopefully it turns into great food as well. My traveling partner/driver Jeff Maas and I were hungry, and I happened to think about J.R. Hollenbeck has a fancy hamburger place in Lincoln Nebraska that I have been meaning to stop at, and this trip would make it happen. I’m not much on driving downtown in a place I’m not familiar with but it was daylight, and I had a copilot so figured we would give it a whirl. Well, we found it, the sign on the door says “H. F. Crave” by Hollenbeck Farms. This place has a unique menu with all sorts of ways to make hamburger unbelievable. My order consisted of the “Cowboy Up”. The description on the menu read: HF in house ground beef patty topped with center cut Pecanwood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, house made Ancho barbecue and caramelized onions on brioche bun and with an onion ring chaser. Deadly, all I can say is deadly!!! Then by recommendation of owner J R Hollenbeck we got the opportunity to try his avocado bites, new to the menu. I think they will be a big hit once folks try them. Last and certainly not least, the fried ice cream. J.R. said you have to try it. He didn’t have to twist my arm too bad. A cookie about six inches in diameter kind of an oatmeal chocolate chip deal with a scoop of fried ice cream on it. Not sure where he got his ice cream scoop but it’s for us huskier boys, it covered the six
inch in diameter cookie, that’s a big ice cream scoop, then if that wasn’t enough, they drizzled chocolate and carmel over it. Deadly good just deadly!!! On to round two Denver Food: So, we were on our way home from Denver kind of stopping here and there, one of the stops was Nebraska Sire Service in McCook. Then we kept working our way east thinking we would stop in Ashland to see what Vogler’s had at bull stud, but ran out of daylight, so darn, we stayed in Lincoln. Guess what’s for supper? We just as well try a different hamburger at the H.F. Crave. This time I had the “Figgin Awesome”: HF in house ground beef patty topped with cherrywood smoked ham, spicey mayo, fried egg, house made fig jam, arugula and bleu cheese on toasted brioche bun.

I say they named it wrong, should have been named “Friggin Awesome!” Then you can refer to first pic of Fried Ice Cream because we sure did that again. As it said on the window: Eat It Love it Crave it Thanks to the whole staff at H.F. Crave for a great time. For this ol’ boy, this would be the number one hamburger ever!!! Highly recommended if in Lincoln!! By the time you get this, all the winter shows will be history, we will be on to the production sales and on the road most every day. If we can help you find your next herd sire or your next replacement female be sure to call any one of our sales team and we will do our best to help you. COMMENTARY
The Road Ahead for Cattle Markets by Michael Seek Fox Group at the Board of Trade
In just the last few weeks we have seen powerful and prominent voices remind all that 11 out of the last 12 Federal Reserve tightening’s on interest rates have led to recession. However, at the same time Dallas Federal Reserve President Kaplan is strongly advocating as much as full 100 basis point increase in rates before summer comes. Is it any wonder Home Depot stock has flipped over to the downside and that Texas Roadhouse stock has been hit so hard? The old saying on Wall Street is the stock market has an uncanny ability to forecast the economy out in time. Home Depot and Texas Roadhouse stocks imply that the 11 out of 12 recession topic alluded to up above may come to pass again for a recession. After all isn’t the country bankrupt and yet forgiving student loans like a rich uncle with no regard for money? Something has to give. Oh, did you notice that since this new year 2022 began that Facebook stock fell off the cliff to the tune of over 25% in less than 48 hours after missing financial expectations? If a stock like Facebook with market capitalization of over 575-Billion Dollars can drop like that then what does this say for the rest of the stock market? It implies that the stock market is vulnerable, that simple. What do livestock producers do in inflationary environment where rates are about to start back up to attempt to cool off inflation? Hedge the asset classes of livestock that are pertinent to your livestock production operation. Take a look at the three key stocks and also the monthly Cattle chart to get good perspective and then contact us for more information on how to attempt reasonable hedges in the livestock business on the feed and livestock sides.

Consider continued hedging of your stock market holdings after consultation with your stock broker and or tax planners for your family or ranch. Not so many years and decades ago inflation was the enemy of earnings of major stocks. Do understand that at if inflation is not contained at 5% that the Federal Reserve may have to ‘squash’ the stock market to help their ‘cause’. Remember, the SP500 is more than double the price it was at the beginning of the Wuhan virus pandemic in 2020. Can it have a correction of 20% to 30% ? Sure it can. That would still leave the over 40% higher than the bottom of the Wuhan virus low in early 2020. If you would like to educate yourself on different tools and techniques can be utilized on the Chicago Exchanges, such as the simple Bull Call Option Spread or Bear Put Option Spread then talk with us. Call Michelle White here at our Board office in Chicago at 312-756-0931 and request a quick mentoring session of 20 minutes to educate you and your banker on the risk and potential rewards-gains-losses’ of such long hedging. The risk of loss in agricultural Chicago Board and New York Board instruments can be substantial and is not necessarily for all folks and ranches. Hedge positions do not necessarily minimize risk associated with sale barn acquisitions on your operations on the dirt. Again, talk with us to learn how to manage risk on your dirt operation and on the Board of Trade and Chicago Mercantile Exchange. ■

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION
Robbins Land & Cattle, LLC named Region III ESAP winner Robbins Land & Cattle, of Scranton, Iowa, is among one of six regional honorees of the Environmental Stewardship Award Program (ESAP), organized by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). Justin and Lacie Robbins, owners of Robbins Land & Cattle, LLC, received Region III honors at the 2022 Cattle Industry Convention, in Houston, TX. The program annually recognizes the
outstanding stewardship practices and conservation achievements of U.S. cattle producers. Regional winners are commended for their commitment to protecting the environment and improving fish and wildlife habitats while operating profitable cattle operations. Robbins Land & Cattle, LLC received the Region III ESAP award for the following efforts: Robbins Land & Cattle, LLC, which runs along the North Raccoon River, is committed to improving the land and natural resources. For nearly two decades, Justin Robbins has dedicated a lot of time and energy to enhancing his farming operation. From rebuilding and implementing farm ponds on pasture ground to establishing cover crops on a large portion of his row crop acres, Justin strives to “leave the land better today” than how he found it yesterday. For instance, Robbins first incorporated cover crops in 2013. He primarily seeded cover crops on harvested corn acres,
but now works to establish cover crops on at least 50 percent of his farming operation. “Building soil health is the long game,” Justin says. Cover crops benefit soil structures in generating nitrogen, reducing erosion, supporting earthworms, and suppressing weeds. Additionally, cover crops provide another forage source. In utilizing cover crops and other corn residue, he has slashed feed costs, which quickly add up when feeding 200 registered Angus cows. In 2020, Robbins Land & Cattle, LLC started to sell their naturally raised, homegrown beef through an online store. The couple saw the value-added opportunity as a way to share their story of environmental stewardship with their community and local customers. One year after opening their online store, Robbins Land & Cattle, LLC saw tremendous growth, doubling its sales despite a global health pandemic. Robbins Land & Cattle will now compete for national honors which will be announced in late July.
ICA welcomes 25 to ICLP The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is pleased to announce the 2022 Iowa Cattlemen’s Leadership Program (ICLP) class. This class represents all sectors of the beef industry, with a variety of professional and educational expertise. Together, they share a common passion for the beef industry and a legacy that transcends generations. The goal of ICLP is to develop future leaders for Iowa’s beef cattle industry. The program provides an opportunity for participants to learn the structure and function of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. Participants undergo training and educational seminars throughout the year to enhance their communication skills, strengthen their awareness of the legislative process, and diversify their knowledge of the Iowa and U.S. beef cattle industries. The 2022 ICLP class will also lead recruitment efforts for Iowa’s premier fed-beef competition, the Carcass Challenge. This unique networking opportunity provides support for educational and lead-
ership activities for Iowa cattlemen across the state.

Bill Angel was a perfect gentleman. From the first day that I met Bill he was a spark of encouragement. Instead of running the new kid down he offered encouragement and was willing to help me learn. Bill Angel you were the best, thanks for your help and encouragement you will be missed by all that knew you. ~ Mike Sorensen
A fond farewell...
William R. “Bill” Angell was born in Lansing, Michigan to Robert D. and Frances L. Angell on August 24, 1946 and passed from this world on January 27, 2022. Bill was raised on a small farm in Michigan where he first acquired his love for agriculture. After graduating from East Lansing High School, he atteneded Michigan State University (MSU) where he was an avid evaluator of livestock and was a member of the livestock judging team with great success. Upon graduation from MSU, Bill earned his master’s from the University of Wisconsin where he continued livestock judging, but as the coach. He also went on to coach at the Universtiy of Kentucky. Bill had a great impact on many young people who would go on to do great things in the industry. Throughout his life, when Bill would recognize the potential a young person had to impact the industry or to achieve their goals, he was the first one to lend support and to share some of his expertise he had gathered along his journey. His willingness to take the time to share words of encouragement with people over the years was an invaluable gift to so many. After two years at the University of Kentucky, Bill became a field man for the American Polled Hereford Association. He later accepted a position with the Record Stockman newspaper. Bill loved working with seedstock operations and assisting them with their marketing and promotional strategies for their annual production sales. After leaving the Record Stockman, Bill worked for Superior Livestock Auction for a number of years where he built the sale catalog, developed the advertising and promotional campaigns and generated the sale reports. Further on in his career, he became the Yards Manager at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS). Bill gave a lifetime of service to the cattle industry and his contributions to it were vast. Bill was not one who looked for praise or recognition, but found joy and self-fulfillment in knowing the event he was involved with, whether it be a production sale or a national show, was as successful an event as possible and that he had done everything in his power to ensure the outcome. Based on his selfless nature and his kind soul, he was loved and cherished by so many he came in contact with over the years.

Ronnie Miller was the Simmental Godfather; I can still hear him in Denver this year, “Mr. Sorensen how are you doing, sit down and let’s have a visit,” and I did. A sweetheart of a gentleman, heart as big as all outdoors, and a passion to help everyone. Rest in peace Mr Ronnie Miller. ~ Mike Sorensen
Until we meet again...
Ronald Gene Miller was born October 24, 1944 in Cambridge, NE to F. Donald Miller and Opal (Hansen) Miller and left this earthly life January 18, 2022 in Denver, CO after traveling to enjoy the Denver National Western Stock Show for his sixtieth year. Ron held a variety of jobs through the years, including custom harvest crew, farming and transportation. But, his love was working with cattle in any capacity. He could quote his schedule to you week by week according to what cattle show, auction or county fair was being held. He never knew a stranger and could trace a line of friends in towns across the United States, earning him the nickname of “Mr. America.” He organized, worked sales, bid on and bought cattle for some of the largest, most prestigious ranches in the United States, but, stayed humble and maintained an honorable work ethic and loyalty to his profession. Ronnie would do whatever it took to make an event successful. He was committed to continuing excellence in the field and introduced and mentored countless current breeders to the Simmental breed and encouraged youth to compete and build relationships in all breeds of the cattle world. He worked closely with the National Western Stock Show, Nebraska Cattleman’s Classic, Nebraska State Fair, AKSARBEN, Junior Beef Expo and many county fairs including the Madison County Fair and Seward County Fair. Ron was unknowingly the trunk line of the most far-reaching and robust network of the “Whos-who” of the breeding cattle industry. One of the most recognized individuals in the Simmental breed nationwide, he relished in meeting the children and grandchildren of kids he encouraged through the years. And although he had countless friends, he was very private with his own world, never spoke of his past and NEVER forgot a face. He knew where the best pie was in every town, who baked the best cookies and never said goodbye when he finished a phone call. A scholarship has been established through the American Simmental Association. Checks can be made to: ASSF - Ronald G. Miller Memorial One Genetics Way • Bozeman, MT 59718

LOT 5 COMMENTARY
Lefty’s Logic by Eric Lee
Its the March book which means I’m sitting here at the Iowa Beef Expo writing. For those of you that read this column every month, you might recall last year as I was sitting in the LPI booth, I wrote about a beef expo that was one of the most memorable for me. It involved Anthony Peoples, Joseph Lolli, and me along with bunch of elderly women dancing and drinking. While that year will always surface to the top, last year takes the cake. You might ask, “how could something top that?” Well, it did because that is when I took Brooke out on our first date. She was there working with Dwyer Cattle Services. Valentine’s Day night we went down to a fancy little steakhouse downtown Des Moines. It was a great night with her and to top it off, my steak was amazing. As we sat talking, we were taking bets on which other couples were also on their first dates. I really hope we didn’t look as awkward as some of them. The next day was quite entertaining. I may have walked by the clerk’s table several extra times just so I could give her a smile or stop and say hi. Every time I did it was noticed by Cindy and Daphne. I think they might have been smiling more than Brooke. Fast forward a year and here we are at IBE together. I hope it is a tradition that will continue many years for us. As we continue on into the spring, I hope everyone has a successful bull season. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any of the other LPI family with your bull buying or selling needs. Thank you & God bless Eric “Lefty” Lee • 608-295-5312 gileecc@yahoo.com

Wow the first of March already, is it too early to start talking spring? Better not jinx us so I’ll stick with my family dynamic in the operation. After last months article, I need to move to another super important person in our operation, my wife Sydney. Syd is ultra talented and I would say especially in animal health and calving departments, even though she jumps in and helps everywhere. To me though, her importance has always gone beyond that as she has always been the one to pick me up and dust me off when something goes wrong. She’s always been the person when I’ve wanted to spend the last dime on a donor or bull that never says no. The person that says we can make that one work and I believe in you and what we are doing! I’ll never forget probably 6-7 years ago when we were just dating we had a bad start to calving and bull sales hadn’t been the best. We had sold a bull early that year and come April he did not semen check. I remember driving home from that appointment wondering how I was going to pay those folks back for that bull as we didn’t have a whole lot of cows or capital at that time, so checks went towards feed bills. I looked over at Syd and said these cows were all I’d ever known and loved but if there was ever a moment I could quit it was right then. I remember it vividly she looked back at me a little choked up and said you can’t quit I won’t let you. The next morning there was a check in my truck for the full amount of that bull that Sydney wrote out of her personal savings account. That day was about the bottom for me but she picked me up and we have been blessed with so many opportunities to rock and roll ever since. On a lighter note, thank goodness she agreed to marry me so I didn’t have to pay her back (haha). There’s nothing easy about running cows and when you have a partner in life that wants to chase that dream with you, what you can do is unparalleled. This month my hat goes off to my wife and all the awesome ranch wives out there that get after it day in and day out! As always don’t hesitate to give me a call this spring. I would love to hear about your operation. God bless, Austin Sorensen 712-310-3788 • aust.sorensen@gmail.com www.livestockplusinc.com

THE Iowa Land Guy TEAM
FEBRUARY 2022
Stay up to date with the latest market trends in Iowa farmland.
State Trends ($/Acre)
David Whitaker • Broker/Auctioneer
Whitaker Marketing Group • www.IowaLandGuy.com
$16,000 $12,000
Forward thinking about Farmland! As we move towards spring, we will see a healthy amount of land continue to hit the market. I am seeing a lot of work being done by sellers and real estate companies to accelerate their land to the market as fast as possible to try to capitalize on the outstanding prices of today. The dust has settled on 2021 and farmland prices will continue to move forward. They may move sideways for a while, but I don’t feel that they will go backwards. (For example: I don’t see pickup trucks going backwards in price. Once the market has changed, the new market value has been set.)
Iowa Land Guy
The government has said they are going to raise interest rates and have started to do so already. I see many people trying to hedge against inflation and are moving their investments to farmland. That being said: I think the changing interest rates will have a greater affect on the residential market than it will on our farmland. The biggest question is: Will the farmland sales continue to flood the market, or will they slow down as the rates increase? Only time will tell on what the interest rate increases will do. If the market moves, sellers need to know and understand that “your farmland is worth what someone is willing to give” and not the price you saw in some article like this one. Every farm is different. They all have different markets, pressures, negatives and positives. Alex Acheson
785-366-1185 aacheson@hereford.org Dearest Heavenly Father, We know that we are sinners and do not deserve your grace, but thank you for your forgiveness and the ability to come to you with all of our requests and worries. We begin by praying for our country. We pray that our leaders would be more interested in pleasing you than in pleasing other people. We ask that you would bless them with good character and that they would act both morally and ethically. We also pray that you would bless our economy so that both businesses and families would be able grow strong. Give us peace to trust in You during the ups and downs and know that you have promised to always sustain us. You promise us that when we face our own individual struggles and even when the world around us seems to be falling apart, that we can still hope in you and in your power to heal, protect and redeem. Strengthen our bodies, our minds and our faith in You so that we can be good witnesses for others of your redeeming love. We pray all this is Jesus’ name. Amen. Pastor Steven Broers • 641-745-7648 Emmanuel Lutheran Church Fontanelle, Iowa
Your time is limited, don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living the result of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinion drowned your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become.

Calving Ease Sire • Intervention was the top-selling bull in the 2018 ZWT Production Sale going to Reisig Cattle, Buford Ranches, Upchurch Angus, Upchurch Brothers, and Pat Southworth. • He is an attractive outlined bull with a square hip and chiseled front that passes on ‘the look’ to his offspring. He sired the top two performing bulls in the 2019 fall-born calf crop at ZWT. • His dam is the world-renowned Final Answer daughter, EA Rose 918, making him a maternal brother to ZWT Infusion F182. • Intervention saw heavy natural service at ZWT in the summer of 2021 and we are excited about the number of calves we will have in 2022. Reports from several of the partners have been very promising. • Use this bull to sire a very distinct look backed by a tremendous cow family! As you may know, we have to get our layout for the magazine done by the middle of the month so we can be on time for press. That being said, as I sit here, on Valentine’s Day, with Taylor’s gorgeous blue eyed (and a little overweight) cat wanting attention, feeling terrible that I haven’t gotten the kids valentines treats yet because I know I have to finish my article for the magazine before I drive up to Des Moines to be at the LPI Booth at Iowa Beef Expo; that overwhelming feeling of not having near enough time in the day is getting to me again! Yesterday, Taylor played volleyball in Glenwood, IA. It was the perfect opportunity to spend a little time with one of my closest friends, Dena (Rupp) Crouch! It was so very needed and incredible to catch up! Living an hour and a half away makes it hard to just pop in! On our trip home, Taylor and I got to chatting about the various cemeteries our ancestors are buried. Taylor reminds me of me at that age and her hunger for more information! We stopped at the cemetary that my great grandparents and great, great grandparents are in their final resting places. She has a list of what her kids’ names will be already (God willing that’s still a long way off). I just love that she loves using meaningful family names with me! Now, to write about what has been the most difficult goodbye I’ve ever had in my life to date. Please don’t get me wrong, we have lost some absolutely amazing people that have been gut wrenching to say the least, but losing my last grandparent has rocked me to my core. The fact that I cannot pick up the phone and chat about silly things for hours still makes my chest hurt to think about. My Grandma Sorensen was one of the most humble ladies I’ve ever known. She was always so hard on herself, and always so very thoughtful of everyone around her. I guess being the oldest grandchild on my dad’s side probably sealed the deal on my grandma and I being so close. We talked about absolutely everything and sometimes when I would call, living out of state, it was so nice to hear her voice and it made me feel like I was home again. Usually on those calls grandpa would answer first and yell for grandma to pick up the other line. Without fail grandma used to talk to me well past 10 o’clock but Grandpa would hang up without saying a word, which always made me giggle. Grandma would yell at him and tell him he could at least say goodbye. He would lift up the receiver say, “well goodbye, my news is on now” and that was that. When we were young, Dad would take us out to the farm to work our show cattle. He would give us our instructions for the day and would repeatedly reiterate that we did not need to go inside and bother our grandparents! Grandma never agreed with dad on that statement and would wait for his truck to be driving down the road and then wave Bubba and me inside. Usually when we went inside she would make us some thing like homemade cinnamon toast or cookies. As we grew up and left for college, she would always tell us, “you don’t need to rush off.” Even if we we had been there for hours already!

My kids have also had quite a struggle with losing their Great Grandma, and that has definitely added to the constant ache. Tucker and Taylor have so many memories of her roast, potatoes and gravy (my favorite meal as well), her pop floats, cookies and mixing hot fudge in ice cream and we cannot forget her hugs! Treva not being verbal but she knew she would always share vanilla ice cream with GG and she got so upset when we would talk to her through the window (when we weren’t allowed inside) and they couldn’t have ice cream. Grandma worried about having the “right” ice cream for Treva even up to her last days. I just pray some day my grandchildren love me as much as I LOVE her! She was so amazing and I don’t have words adequate enough to describe this heartache. I know time heals all, but my heart is still struggling. My head understands that she is in no more pain and was so happy to see Grandpa and Helen again, it just might take a while for my heart to catch up! My friend, Angie, said, “your heart is a lot of miles from your head sometimes.” Please continue to keep our nation and our military in your constant prayers. God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com www.livestockplusinc.com
