MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings I’m not sure what the rest of you think, but spring can’t come soon enough for me. Subzero to fifty degrees ain’t good for anything and especially me. Most of you know by now that I was involved in a little bumper car episode on highway 20 about 50 miles west of Sioux City. Don Esslinger and I were on our way home from a sale in Crofton, Nebraska. I thought we were doing just fine when all the sudden we were going sideways then from one side of the road to the other and eventually sliding sideways with no control perfectly down the center of the road. If we would have hit a dry spot we would have still been rolling. After what seemed like sliding for 5 minutes but, really only seconds, I looked out the passenger window to see a Red Equinox headed for the broad side of my Envoy. Next thing I know, everything in the Envoy, including a semen tank, had shifted positions and I hurt all over. Don was slumped over and I thought we had lost him for a minute ‘till he picked up his head and said “what happened?” We think he was knocked out right from the start of the first slide possibly during the whole event. He was lucky! I remember it all and so does my body. I found muscles I didn’t know I had. The good thing is we are both alive and regardless what anybody else says I am kinda glad. We are both healing slowly, and I am back to work with little aches and pains still hanging on. To those folks that allowed me to have folks cover for me a BIG THANK YOU. Also to those folks that called with well wishes, thank you for caring, and above all THANK YOU, God for riding with us that day. I had the wildest time the other night. I went to a pre-sale party in Ida Grove at Mason & Diane Fleenor’s place and found the most amazing house. The house was built and put together mostly by Mason & Diane. Diane took me on a tour. She was saying this log come from this pasture, this beam was cut out of that tree, this floor came from another pasture, and so on and so on. They also had a beautiful deck overlooking a pond. Mason had some pretty good stories about the deck and pond but we won’t tell all the secrets. Ok, back to the start. When we walked in, a group of folks

were sitting around a table in the garage cutting meat for our supper and for the lunch part of their sale the next day. I don’t think this was these guys and gals first rodeo. They had it down to a science, almost like a mini meat locker. Let me tell you about the evening meal. I’m not sure who the official chef was, but I’m pretty sure it was Mason. That chunk of meat he served was almost good enough to be from one of Fleenor’s purebred Angus. Wes Tiemann reassured me that it would be CERTIFIED ANGUS BEEF, that’s why it is so good. Well, a great night was had by all and the meal was deadly. Thanks Mason and Diane for a great evening. I hope we can do it again. Sale season is in full swing and I’m fortunate enough to have a sale almost every day. If we or our staff can be of any help finding your next great one give us a call and we will try to direct you in what we feel is the correct direction. Please keep our Military in your thoughts and prayers. God Bless.

Hey Folks!

It’s been a long, hard winter but we are making plans for a productive spring and summer! Don’t forget our MAY/JUNE ISSUE DEADLINE IS APRIL 12TH. When It’s Time, It’s Time by Evan Rayl

Shirley & I are moving to Des Moines. As many of you know, we are far beyond retirement age, so it is definitely time. Shirley says it’s because I wouldn’t leave the cattle, and she is right. But when it’s time, it’s time. The cold weather this winter had a lot to do with it also. Of course, the next question is where. We don’t even have a street address yet. Just a number in a large group of apartments west of the Des Moines Golf and Country Club. After we picked a location, our three kids complained that we were too far from them, but Shirley thought it should be on the west side, so it was more convenient for me to come back to the farm. Only trouble is, one has to go a couple of miles east so one can go west on

Interstate 80. About my replacement at the farm, to introduce you, he is Kevin Sothman. Many rural folks already know him because he is the Purina Livestock Specialist in Southwest Iowa. Our farm, where he will be moving is near the northeast corner of the area he works. He often talks about his father, who taught him a lot about livestock. He will be taking care of our cattle with the help of a young neighbor of ours who I will mention later. On page 52 is the most recent monthly column Kevin writes for his dealers to publish or send out. He enjoys doing his column each month, so expect to see more of these in Livestock Plus. What he writes is going to be much more on point, than what I usually do. Expect both Kevin and I to attempt to entertain and bring out helpful information in the future. With packing to move, I’ve had an opportunity to look at both the first issue of Livestock Plus 22 years ago and the most recent issue. Man alive, the improvement has been phenomenal. Congratulations Mike!!! n

HETEROSIS...Your ‘Only’ FREE LUNCH in the Cattle Business! APEX Calving Ease: We offer many bulls with multi-generation calving ease ancestry’s and predictability resulting from carefully blending the best in low birth-weight Angus and Angus Hybrid genetics. Getting more live calves with less work, that are worth more, is vital to our customer’s profitability. APEX Carcass Traits: Our entire yearling bull offering averaged 16.88 Adj. Yr. REA with an impressive 5.16 Adj. Yr. IMF and only .20 FAT…and that is the AVERAGE as scanned by Sandhills Ultrasound, a CUP certified technician!!! Last year’s REA average was 16.1 on 100 bulls, further validating our predictable carcass genetics. Carcass traits are one of the industry’s strongest profit drivers, and our program has generations of superior ultrasound data behind them!

By Hoover Dam and from a two-year-old heifer, both, he and his dam were born unassisted!

APEX Maternal Power: Decades of research at the USDA Meat Animal Center and numerous universities have proven the economic benefits of the crossbred cow. Whether fertility, longevity, more milk or stouter weaning weights, the advantage of heterosis shines bright. With record setting prices per pound, doesn’t weaning more calves with improved quality and heavier pay weights, while you are building a more productive cowherd, stand to reason? These Bulls have PROFIT DRIVING Carcass Genetics. They feature AMAZING Ultrasound Data!

Igenity DNA Genetic Profile: Every bull selling has a complete profile provided with scores for a multitude of important genetic and economic traits. This creditable information is huge and seldom provided, even though the technology is available through the largest bovine DNA testing lab in the US. All beef producers, in all environments, can use this proven selection tool to reduce the wait and see approach.

First time in 40+ years, Our BEST Heifers Sell. The COW-Making Kind!

APEX Phenotype Advantage: “Today 90% of all cattle are bought and sold based on phenotype” as stated by Gerald Callahan, during his judging commentary at the 2014 National Western Angus Bull Show. With that understanding, producing calves with more quality, performance, structural soundness and eye appeal are other advantages of our ‘fine tuned’, hybrid breeding program. This year’s offering is the stoutest we’ve ever offered with most impressive quality! APEX Genetic Predictability: Whether calving ease, maternal, carcass or performance...we have all the bases covered. Getting our customers ‘more for less’ has always been a priority…and today it is really important with the price levels of both bulls and females. In just last two years, our production has sold into 31 states and Canada with many going cattle to repeat buyers in our online sales! They Both Sell… Visualize the Marketable Quality of their Calves! Feedlot Performance: Dan Dorn, Decatur County

They Both Sell… Genetic Predictability and Quality at It’s Best!

Feeders, Oberlin, KS (40,000 Head Capacity) states… “We benchmark all of our cattle to determine profit drivers. Crossbred cattle have better performance, feed efficiency, grades and have more muscle. Profit drivers in a feed yard are conversion, carcass weight and carcass traits. Heterosis is the key to improving them! ”

One of the coldest winters on record is about to come to an end, spring is just around the corner and with it comes calving season. Some of us have already started calving heifers that were kept for replacements. A producer I work with had 10 out of 30 heifers calve in just one day! An argument I’ve heard from a large grain producer concerned the amount of labor required to calve a large group of cows in a short amount of time. I asked if he hired extra help during planting and harvesting season. He said, “of course! We need to get it done as soon as possible to improve yield.” My response was, “how about hiring extra help during calving time?” I know it’s a lot of work caring for this many calves all at once, but at today’s calf prices, you would only need to save one or two calves to cover the cost and the additional pounds produced is substantial. At recent meetings we’ve had around the area, we showed that at current cattle prices, a heifer that will calve on the first day of calving season during her whole productive life verses one that calves 60 days later each year, will return over $2000 more income over 8 calves produced. Getting a large percentage of our cows to calve in the first 21 days of calving season—and keeping them there—will result in a large increase in pounds produced by weaning time. (Improved Yield) Another management plan to improve calf survival and reduce the hours spent checking cows is night time feeding to increase day time calving. A recent article I read stated that 6 Iowa producers had 85 percent of their calves born between 6AM and 6PM by feeding at night. My father first used this idea when I was still living at home. That year we had 95 percent of 100 heifer’s calf between 5AM and 11PM. I believe the secret is in how it’s implemented. We had a two pen system - one with only water available from early morning to dusk. The other one had water, and we would deliver feed during the normal course of the day’s chores. It was always my job to turn them into the feed every evening at about dusk, and to shut them in all night. My father would check them before going to bed and again at 4:30 to 5:00 in the morning. Out of those 100 head of heifers we weaned over 100 calves. We had 8 sets of twins and saved 7 of the sets. This is also about the same year we started tracking the percent of body weight weaned per cow. A couple of the heifers that raised twins weaned close to 100 percent of their body weight and bred back! Tracking each cow’s performance isn’t hard to do! All you need to know is which calf came from which cow, what the calf weighed at or about weaning time, and what the cow weighed at or about preg-checking. Then just divide the calf weight by the cow weight to identify which cows are producing the lowest percent of their body weight and cull accordingly. You don’t need to know birth dates on the calves because you want to discount the cows that calve late. Those who have purchased a scale, and have used it to track production have said it is the best thing they ever invested in. A scales and a little bit of time will pay for itself in one to two years. These are “Proven Practices” that can increase net profits in your cow herds but the key to making it work is to provide the COW’S NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS 365 Days a Year. n

From the Tailgate, Hello! I am pulling into the barn yard at Tree Lane Farms in central IL, after attending a vary successful Curtin Land & Cattle production sale. I was never so happy to put my mud boots on and not the snow boots. So spring is coming and with that we know the days will get longer and the TO DO list even longer. The last mouth has been a very busy one, but an eye opening one for me. I started at The Iowa Beef Expo then on to Illinois Beef Expo, Missouri Angus Futurity and finally the Ohio Beef Expo with a few production sales as well, and there was a common theme to all of them. We, as seedstock producers, have been doing a very good job of educating or working with our buying public to see and identify quality and its value. In the same breath, we are not satisfied with the prices we are receiving for the average to below average cattle. I believe that is because of what I just talked about. So I would like to suggest to us seedstock producers, myself included, that we need to educate ourselves a little bit more. Maybe we should not bring that average to below average animal to a production sale. Instead, we should look at using the knife or bander a little more often. If you look at feeder calf prices and the high demand for beef today why should you take the time and expense to halter brake, wash, clip and take those cattle to a sale and only get average price? In some cases not even pound price, you do the math. As always it was good to see and talk to everyone at the Expos this past mouth. If any one at LPI can help you to market your livestock just call. Thank you for your time! Bruce

I hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather!! Taylor came home from school on our first sunny, slightly warmer day and said, “Whewwww! I’m so glad its summer!” Well, not quite but we are getting closer! Many of you have made the comment that Livestock Plus, Inc. is normally located in the lavatory of your homes, for some good reading material. Suddenly, quite a few older Livestock Plus magazines started showing up in our bathroom at home. I was completely baffled and Tuck said one evening, “Mom, did you know that you and Papa have an article in ALL of these old magazines?” I think I found the culprit! He had been going into my office getting all the older issues and piling them in the bathroom so he could “catch up” on past articles! Tucker and Taylor attended the Illinois Beef Expo and the Ohio Beef Expo with me this year! I didn’t know how well Taylor would enjoy the traveling but, aside from some minor arguments, they did very well! They get a bit too comfortable just taking off and walking around the trade shows on their own!! So many great people/friends! On our way out to Ohio we took a slight detour to check out Musgrave Angus before their sale. One that I am never able to make it to because of the Ohio Beef Expo. What an incredible set of cattle. Musgraves could be some of the nicest, most genuine people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I like to believe that you put good things out there and good things come back and especially with this family. I think they had an incredible sale and I, for one, am happy as heck for them! We had quite the crew traveling out to Ohio with us. Bruce Keisewetter, one of our new sales representatives and Carrie Horman, CNN Cattle. Carrie was my support system and she assisted DP Sales with a couple sales during the expo. We had fun and there may or may not have been some smelling of feet and uncontrollable laughter on the way home!!

Everyone is probably tired of hearing my lecture on practicing SAFE SUN but I just want you and your family to be well informed! Skin Cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. What is really scary is the fact that the rate for melanoma has been increasing for the last 30 years, likely linked to an increase of UV exposure from the sun and indoor tanning! Keep this in mind when letting your teen tan before prom!! If you need some good talking points from someone that tanned like it was her job, let me know! This is very close to my heart especially since I will be having yet another MOHS surgery on my face the first of April. PLEASE understand that frequent sunburns in childhood may increase the risk for cancer many years or even decades later. It’s so important to keep kids well protected with a broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen. Like I said earlier, let me know if you want to talk sunless tanners or get some good scare points for your indoor tanners! Don’t hesitate to let me know! I want to end this with how incredibly precious our visits with my grandparents are becoming. Tuck loves to hear Great Grandpa’s stories of how he grew up and Great Grandma can make super cool paper sail boats. Hope you all take the time to enjoy a family member!! Keep our military in your prayers and travel safe! Heidi Sorensen 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com
