This is one of the best Simmental bulls I have ever seen. I am 83 years old and have seen as many bulls as anyone in the country. I am one of the fussiest bull buyers in America and a bull has to be about perfect for me to buy him. This fancy bull is so deep ribbed, square hipped, full of muscle and red meat. He is big topped, wide based, clean fronted, and clean sheathed. He is very sound on his feet and legs and carries himself well. He has a topnotch set of EPD’s and is a HERD BULL SUPREME.

We went to the Denver Stockshow and wanted to buy the Simmental Purebred we liked the best. We looked at about all of them there. There are so many bulls of all breeds that have bad feet and a lot of people aren’t paying any attention to it. Their hooves are either too small or many of them have outside back toes that curl under or else they toe out on front. We have tried to watch this very closely because our cows have to walk and trail the year around as many of yours do.

Dam of Lover Boy, 2009 Grand Champion American Royal

We finally found one at the last minute. He looked good every place you looked at him with no holes in him and the best feet we had seen on any bull in the show. We had to catch a plane to go home and I gave them a check for $25,000 for him about 3 or 4 minutes before he was to show and left for the airport. HE WAS PICKED GRAND CHAMPION SIMMENTAL OF THE SHOW. You can’t help but love him because he has perfect conformation and is just the right size.

MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings! Are you all ready for some summer weather? I guess I’m ready for some 70 degree days. I think my skin must be getting thinner the more mature I get. Maturity isn’t bad, I’m just not ready for it yet. Dixie and I have been floating around the countryside working sales and putting on lots of miles. It just seems like we eat more at fast food places than anything else. I have lots of folks tell me “I wish I could go to sales every day, eat steaks every night, and stay in fancy motels like you field men do. I think I could wean every one of those folks if they would just jump in the car and ride with me for a week. I would say that I eat a real good meal about 3 to 4 times a week, and the rest are what I call gut bombs and fast food and keep driving so that we can get to the next destination. It ain’t all glamour, but I love what I do and that takes the work out of it. Well, Dixie and I were on our way home the other night after a 4 day run. As we got closer to home, on I-80, the discussion about our evening meal came up. It was about 6:30 and we were close

to the Anita exit and The Red Woods popped into my mind. It’s kind of one of our special places to eat that’s close. I didn’t have to ask Dixie twice and we landed at “The Red Woods.” We really like what I call the roughage tray. The roughage tray has radishes, onions, liverwurst, pickled herring, olives, and several different kinds of pickles, pineapple, cheese, cauliflower, carrots and more, and as usual we hit that roughage platter like it’s the last supper. While we were eating the roughage, we placed an order like we have been putting up small square bales all day. Yep, you guessed it. We were three quarters full by the time the meal got there, but we dove into the fish that we ordered like we really needed it! Dixie had the cod filet, and I had orange roughy. It was a really pleasant change from fast food and gut bombs that we ate for the past four days. No, I haven’t given up on beef, just needed a change. As always, The Red Wood Steak House was great! We enjoyed the sit down meal and adult beverages, and they have best service of anywhere you will go. PLEASE note that the May issue will be the May/ June issue and the delivery date will be mid-May. The Livestock Plus staff will be working on the August issue in June and July in between their personal vacations. We would like to wish the junior exhibitors along with the senior exhibitors the best of luck in all the summer shows, state fairs, and field days. Please travel safe and have fun!! As always please keep our service folks and their families in your thoughts and prayers. God Bless

COMMENTARY

Sustainability Comes Full Circle by Jennifer Carrico

Reprinted with permission from High Plains Journal. Caring for the environment and the cattle is a passion seen at Amana Farms. Converting cattle manure to electricity to help power the surrounding communities is part of the full-circle production on the eastern Iowa farm. “We produce the corn that is then fed to the cattle and the manure from the cattle is an input in the anaerobic digester to produce electricity. A byproduct from the digester is used as fertilizer on the crop ground and the circle starts again,” said Amana Farms manager John McGrath. “It’s a true definition of sustainability.” Construction of the anaerobic digester began at the historic farm in 2006, when Iowa was going to a more phosphorusbased cropping system. Amana Farms is a tourist destination and historic German farm that was founded in 1855, and located in the rolling hills of Iowa County. Reduction of smell was an attractive factor of the decision for the addition of the digester. The environmental and financial benefits Amana Farms general manager John of the digester made it a good fit McGrath and beef manager Jon Haman work together to make the electrical at the farm. digester perform properly to convert “Since most of these digesters cattle manure to electricity. are located at dairies, we needed (Journal photo by Jennifer Carrico.) to figure out if our feedlot was big enough to produce enough manure to make the addition worthwhile,” said McGrath. Amana’s feedlot likely would not produce enough waste to run the digester. Despite the lack of manure waste, construction went forward because of the vast benefits to adding the process at the farm. The digester has been in operation since 2008. The manure from Amana Farms’ 4,000-head feedlot is added to the digester as a dry product. Other waste products and water from a nearby fresh-water pond are added to make a recipe for producing methane using combustion engines and turn it into electricity. Improving the environment at Amana Farms is a priority. By adding the digester, operators have been able to help improve the environment for others as well. “We found that we could get waste from outside sources for the digester. Since we are located so close to Cedar Rapids, we could get waste from grain processors to be used in the digester,” said McGrath.

16

Livestock Plus Inc.

The removal of waste from landfills, which can be added to the digester, has allowed companies like West Liberty Foods, which provides turkey for Subway restaurants, to become a landfill-free facility. “We get six to eight trucks per day in to provide waste for the digester. Everything from rejected grains to expired produce and soda,” said McGrath. “This waste would otherwise go to landfills.” Amana Farms beef manager Jon Haman said employees get weekly calls from waste stream operators wanting to be part of their process. “We have to turn them down. Not only because we are at capacity for the digester, but also because we have developed a recipe and know how to adjust the diet of the digester based on what we are putting in it,” said Haman. In 2015, Amana Farms constructed a monoslope building to house 1,200 head of feedlot cattle on slotted floors over a manure pit. The manure is collected in the pit and scraped several times daily to be added to the digester. In the cold weather the scraper works continuously to keep the manure in a liquid form when added to the digester. In warm weather the scraper doesn’t run as often. Approximately 75 tons of manure is produced daily at Amana Farms, but the manure is just part of what is added to the digester. “We have to figure out what is the best ration to feed the digester,” said Haman. “It’s like a giant concrete steer and when the ration is wrong, the digester gets upset.” Cornstalk bedding is added to the manure from the outside feedlot. Water is also added, along with other waste. “The cornstalks can cause a challenge. Cornstalks add energy to the recipe, but if too many are added, they float and are hard to get back into the digester,” said Haman. Every digester is different, and the recipe of inputs for different digesters is different as well. McGrath said it is important to build flexibility into the system. They have followed more of the example of digesters used in Europe than the dairies in the United States. The European models are based on diets similar to what is fed at Amana Farms. Each truckload of waste brought in can cause the need for different amounts of inputs to the digester. A storage system has been added at the farm for the waste products brought in via truck. This concrete area is also used as an area to create the ration for the digester. McGrath said cattle manure is about 23 percent of the digester’s required diet and is actually a good buffer for the system from the other products they use. “We could use just manure in the digester, but it would be so much harder and we would have to feed a lot more cattle,” added Haman. The digester produces methane that is burned and sparks the generators to then run the engines and produces electricity. The electricity produced is put on the grid, purchased by the Amana Society Service Company, and helps power the homes of 1,700 people plus the Whirlpool Refrigeration plant. The digester, the generators and the entire process is a continual learning procedure. Maintenance is important to keep the generators running properly, including oil changes and spark plug changes. Proper maintenance has allowed their engines to last two to three times longer than expected so far. “We have to keep these engines running. We have four engines and want to keep at least three running at all times, so good maintenance practices are a must,” said McGrath. After the power is pulled from the digester, the byproduct of the process is used for fertilizer on the 7,500 acres of crop ground at the farm. A 9-mile-long pipeline helps distribute the byproduct to be spread, which provides 60 to 70 percent of the needed fertilizer each year. “We do soil sampling and the byproduct is sampled at application time,” said McGrath. “Our crop ground is in nutrient balance

"Sustainability" continued from pg 16 because we can use this product.” Keeping the inputs for the digester constant helps keep the process running continually. “We try to keep the same number of cattle on feed. We feed out all the calves that we raise, plus stay full with purchased and custom-fed cattle,” said Haman. Cattle are fed a ration of gluten, distillers’ grain, high moisture corn and ground hay. When the cattle ration is developed, the cattle are the priority and not the digester. “We are in the beef business. We want to produce beef in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way,” said Haman. The Amana Farms’ 2,400 cows help with that process, as do the people who work at the farm. “This all has proved that the success of this farm is really in the caring and qualified people who work here to make sure everything runs properly,” said McGrath. “I have dedicated my life to improving our cattle industry and our environment. We are proving to the world you can feed cattle while improving air and water quality for future generations. The beef industry has been and important part of America’s success. We will continue that,” said Haman. Amana Farms was the Region III winner of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Environmental Stewardship award in 1999. Improving the environment for future generations is a commitment they continue now and in the future. Jennifer Carrico can be reached at 515-833-2120 or jcarrico@hpj. com. n

COMMENTARY

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things by Evan Rayl

Isn’t it great that we are having warm days, feedlots that are drying up, and field work under way? The older one gets, the longer and colder the winter seems to be. Of course, many older folks head south for the whole winter. Others leave just after Christmas, but not at our house. There are grandchildren to keep up with and cattle shows and sales to attend. Recently, our youngest grandson turned eleven, but just a week earlier our first great-grandson was born. His name is Gannon, a name that his great grandmother had trouble remembering for a couple of weeks. It was no problem for me, there has been folks by the name the Gannon raising Angus cattle north of Colfax, Iowa for as long as I can remember.

If you are a reader of “BEEF” magazine, you have been seeing numerous articles about the top 100 bull sellers in the U.S.A. Apparently, their thinking is, if they are going to get any advertising from breeders, it will be from breeders selling over 200 bulls a year, which is currently how many it takes to make the list. Now every issue has articles directed to the “Top 100,” but most of the articles are useful for smaller breeders as well. I expect the number of bulls sold, required to make the list will soon move up to a higher number. Only 10 states have from 15 large breeders down to 3. They are SD, NE, MT, KS, CO, TX, ID, WY, MO, & ND. Ten more states have two or one. They are ND, GA, MN, MS, TN, NM, SC, VA, IA, & AR. So, 30 states have none. The world is round and the place which may seem like the end may be only the beginning. Congratulations to Glenn and Bev Rowe of Lorimor, Iowa as winners in the 2015 Iowa Environmental Stewardship Award Program, as well as the Region 3 winner in the national contest. The Rowes first improved the family farm near Minburn by leaving soybean stubble untouched and disc chiseling corn stalks that would leave enough residue on the field to avoid wind erosion. While these changes were taking place, the Rowe‘s purchased 427 acres of pasture ground in Union County. Later, when their sons, Justin and Tanner said they wanted to be part of the farming operation, Glen and Bev decided they would move to the pasture farm that needed many improvements, including a new house and cattle facilities. Later, improved rotational grazing and rural water access came along. Next, reseeding pastures internal fencing of paddocks, use of heavy fabric and rock at crossings and stream bank stabilization. I am proud to say the Rowe‘s are using Rayl Bulls.

The beginning is the most important part of the work. - Plato

PRODUCT PROFILE

Making A Cowman’s Best Time Of The Year

EVEN BETTER!

T

he favorite time of the year for cow-calf producers has long been established as being the calving season. That is when the anticipated results of the previous year’s breeding program decisions are realized. Jeff Creamer, Lazy JB Angus, a calf catcher owner, refers to his calving season as “Christmas Time.” Whether the new calves hitting the ground are from AI, ET or the valued herd sire battery, there is no time of the year that a cowman looks forward to more. Accompanying that ‘special time’ are dangers, extra stress and increased labor responsibilities that are often referred to as ‘a necessary part’ of the business. Over the years, many people have been injured, or worse, by the instinctive mother cow during the newborn processing period. Things can go wrong fast when tagging, vaccinating, banding and weighing new calves — and the results can be devastating. Bud Williamson of West Virginia says, “My calf catcher was a virtual life saver!’”

rancher refers to his catcher as “The best piece of equipment I’ve owned.” Leo added, “The traditional way to tag and process calves can be dangerous and often takes more than one individual to accomplish. Now, just one person, who can operate an ATV or UTV, can safely work calves.” Allen Lippert, a Kentucky cattlemen, says his catcher is “Great for one-man operations. No more waiting for help!”

Safety Is a Priority

Ease Of Operation

“We are all about safety and making calf processing easier,” states Dan Leo, a long-time Nebraska rancher and owner of the Safety Zone Calf Catcher business. With the average age of cattlemen getting older, help being difficult, if not impossible to find, their calf catchers are filling a real need. Most cattle operations daily use ATV and UTVs, and now they have an important option to ensure that every calving season is safe and uneventful. Laurel Gilbertson, 74-year-old Nebraska

Construction and Design

The calf catcher is a durably constructed, welded steel cage that is built to last generations. Bill Helms, a Texas retired mechanical engineer and 71-year-old cattlemen applauds the design and fabrication quality adding “It is simple to use, and it works.” Mounting with ball-coupler hitches permits it to perform well in all types of terrains and conditions. The quick and easy mount and dismount process takes only a couple of minutes. With the front gate locked open, the driver approaches the calf and captures it in the cage by shutting the spring-loaded gate. Aiding the process, the catcher is designed for quiet operation, thus does not threaten the cowherd. Typically used on newborn to week-old youngsters, but calves up to 300 lbs. can be caught for treatment of pinkeye, foot rot and pneumonia conditions. The producer enters the cage by stepping through the near side opening, and then moves the calf to the rear holding area

where it can be easily processed while being protected from the mother cow. At all times, the operator is inside the cage, and never threatened by the instinctive mother. Daryl Bernard, an Iowa cattleman states, “I like how the calf holder restrains the calf and eliminates having to wrestle the calves on the ground.”

Mother Cow’s Behavior

By design, nearly 100% of the mothers remain at the back of the catcher where the rear calf holder is located. The most protective of cows are much calmer when they can see and smell their calf in a less threatening situation, as compared to wrestling the calf away from the mother. “The unit works particularly well for pairing out as the cow will follow the calf virtually anywhere! Whether moving pairs to another pasture or during inclement weather, it is a valuable tool.” states Leo. When finished processing, the operator releases the calf out the back to its mother, again accomplished from inside the cage to maintain full-time safety. Montana rancher, Andy Dorn says this about his Safety Zone catcher, “It is the best investment we ever made. Easy on the calves and great for the cows too!”

depending on the protective behavior of the mother cow while the processing takes place,” Leo notes. His goal is to make the best time of the year, safer, easier and with the labor requirement of only one person. Catcher user, Wanda Thompson from Missouri comments, “To all you out there still dodging mad momma cows, wrestling big calves, and maybe not getting some of your calves done, the calf catcher is definitely a better way.” Other options developed by Leo’s business include a digital, waterproof scale — especially useful to seedstock producers – and a rear tow hitch to accommodate long-distance travel. Safety Zone Calf Catchers LLC, internationally trademarked and registered, sells directly to cattlemen and through a growing dealer network. Current sales extend throughout the continental U.S. and into Canada, Australia, France and the UK. Leo states, “Our best salesmen are the users as they cannot keep from telling their neighbors of the catcher’s benefits — and the word is traveling fast!” Interested parties are encouraged to watch the informative action video at www.SafetyZoneCalfCatchers. com or to call (877) 505-0914 for more information or to place orders.

Making a Better Way

“Traditionally, producers have to get to the calves early after birth otherwise it can be difficult to catch and even hang on to them, and then it can often require two or more people

In Memory of Creighton L. Barner God got one of the good cowboys to check heavens pastures. Rest in peace Creighton. ~ Mike Sorensen Creighton Lee Barner was born June 25th 1932 in Martelle, Iowa to George and Gladys (Leinbaugh) Barner. His graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at Rosehill Cemetery in Mechanicsville, Iowa with Military Honors. He graduated from the Martelle schools in 1949. He then went to the University of Dubuque, in Dubuque, Iowa. There he was a walk-on for the football team. And after that first year was granted a full ride football scholarship to that University. He also wrestled for the University there as well. He majored in History and Physical Education. His most famous wrestling opponent was later a linebacker for the Pittsburg Steelers. And his name was Art (BoomBoom) Malicek. After attending college Creighton entered the Air Force in 1952. He joined the 1st Airborne Cadets in San Antonio, Texas. Creighton continued to wrestle and box for the Air Force. He came home and married Lola Horstmann on June 27th 1954 in Wheatland, Iowa. From that union there were 5 children born. They were Brenda, Bret, Becky, Bonita and Bart all of Iowa. Creighton farmed the family farm for many years raising purebred Angus cattle. He also was a County 4-H leader. Another thing that Creighton did was he was an independent livestock truck driver for many years. Later in his life he married Mary Miller on June 3rd, 1982. Creighton and Mary continued raising Angus cattle, horses and livestock trucking. Creighton is survived by his wife Mary, her son Robbie of Munden, KS, his children in Iowa, 9 grandchildren, one brother Steven of Oxford Junction, Iowa and many cousins, nieces, nephews, family-friends and his original family of brothers and sisters. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts and cousins. He will be missed by many around the country. Creighton is one tough cowboy! n

My co-pilots, Tuck & Tay, and I made another trip to the Illinois Beef Expo once again this year. We didn’t get to check out the junior show as much as we wanted, but we always have a great time with old and new friends. We did, however, get to check out some good sales! The kids got a big kick out of Mr. Knox Hatmaker, Holli and Drew Hatmaker’s little man, promoting DP Sales. This little guy just recently turned 2 years old and he is just the sweetest most well behaved 2 year old ever! He just rolled in and took a seat with the kids. They got a huge kick out of listening to his little southern accent that is very prominent already. Knox was just one of many of the fantastic people in Illinois! My kids are also President Lincoln fanatics, so we decided to check out the house he lived in when he was nominated for President of the United States. It was an awesome stop and like Tucker says, Knox Hatmaker, Tuck & Tay “Mom we learn something new every year!” I had to giggle at Taylor’s face when the tour guide showed them the outhouse and explained how one would have to walk all the way outside in the winter to use the restroom. She likes to tell people about the pots under the beds and giggles every time she explains what they were used for back in the day. She’s pretty relieved we have indoor plumbing! Another great trip! I hope everyone is having fantastic sales and finding some great livestock! I know we are gearing up for what I hope to be a

great sale season!! I know my kiddos are having so much fun working with the sale pigs and I’m just trying to not get attached to each and every one of them. In closing, I would like to share a passage from Taylor’s “Bedtime Devotions” book: “God said that no matter what happens, or how bad things look, He will help you and take care of you.” That passage gave us a wonderful sense of peace the other night, and we hope to pass that on to you. Please keep our military and our nation in your constant prayers. God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig 661.900.6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com www.livestockplusinc.com … check out our BLOG for sale results!
