The easiest calving purebred heifer bull in the breed. We have calved over 60 heifers out of him the last 2 years and never had to pull a calf. THEY REALLY GROW and wean heavy. He has perfect feet and legs. There is an epidemic of bad feet and legs in the breed. Many people are not paying any attention to it and many show judges are not either, because they are placing them by their numbers on paper only. Lover boy had 13 son’s that sold in our sale that averaged $5,704.

This is one of the best Simmental bulls I have ever seen. I am 85 years old and have seen as many bulls as anyone in the country. I am one of the fussiest bull buyers in America and a bull has to be about perfect for me to buy him. This fancy bull is so deep ribbed, square hipped, full of muscle and red meat. He is big topped, wide based, clean fronted, and clean sheathed. He is very sound on his feet and legs and carries himself well. He has a topnotch set of EPD’s and is a HERD BULL SUPREME. A Stepping Stone topped Jerry Walsh’s sale at $18,000 and his sons averaged over $7,000.

MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings As I write this, it is a great day in Iowa. Sun is shining, and I get to be home a whole day before hitting the road again. Sale season is moving along real nice, have a bunch to go yet, but I feel blessed to be able to be employed most days. I had a deadly awesome experience this year at Iowa Winter Beef Expo. The Iowa Beef Breeds Council initiated the 1st annual Grilling contest in 2018. Guess what, they asked me to be one of the judges, and I accepted. They had contestants from all over the country, and they were all here to win the $1,000.00 prize money. They take this stuff serious. They have trailers that are unbelievable, or at least from a distance and we were not allowed to get close or talk to the contestants until the contest was over. I was told a week before to kind of pull back on feed so that I would be empty for this contest. Do you know how hard it is for a fluffy fella to hollow out? As we (the group of judges) were getting our instructions on how to judge this deal, the fella that was instructing us said,

“one bite only.” We all looked at him like a deer in the headlights. He went on to say, “See me? If you eat more than that, you will look like me!” Now, I can miss a five-pound chicken by ten pounds, but this guy wouldn’t be far off three fifty, so we reluctantly took his advice and only cheated a few times. We had 16 samples of ribs and 16 samples of brisket. I can honestly say, not one was bad. They were all good, but some were just better. I only cheated a couple times on the one bite thing, but it was worth it. Have you ever looked at a bloated steer and think man he must be miserable, we all were almost at the bloated state. The one really good thing about this one bite thing was they said we could take home the remainder of the samples we had taken a bite out of. Dixie and I had a refrigerator in the motel full of meat and warmed up meat every evening for three days. I know that at least three of the judges from this year have put in their request to judge again next year; I’m one of them. A big thank you to the Beef Breeds council for continuing to improve and make the Iowa Beef Expo an event for everyone. Thanks to the entire judging group for a great time. To the chefs that prepared this unbelievable feast, thanks and come back next year! Please travel safe, I look forward to seeing ya down the road. Please take a minute to say a prayer for all the folks in sickbay and also keep our military in your thoughts and prayers God Bless

Before introducing legumes into pastures, it is important to have thistles and other broadleaf weeds under control. Adding grasses into existing pasture stands improves pasture productivity by thickening up the stand. It is also common to use a grass-legume mixture to improve pastures. When using a grass legume-mixture be sure to select compatible grass-legume mixes. For instance, birdsfoot trefoil is easier to establish in orchardgrass or Kentucky bluegrass than in smooth bromegrass, tall fescue, or reed canarygrass. Alfalfa and red clover would be better fits to use with smooth bromegrass, tall fescue, or reed canarygrass. Two ways to add forage species into existing stands are frost seeding and interseeding. Frost seeding Frost seeding is the spreading of forage seed onto existing pastures during the late winter or early spring while the ground is still frozen. Typically, this occurs at the end of February and in early March. The idea behind frost seeding is that the freeze-thaw cycles and early spring rains will help provide shallow coverage of the seed. With the grazing season just around the corner, now is the time A common misconception with frost seeding is that the seed to be making pasture improvements for the upcoming grazing seashould be spread on top of snow. Actually, the goal of frost seedson. Some pastures could benefit from improvements, especially ing is to get the seed on bare soil. If seeded on top of snow and following the 2017 drought. the snow melts quickly, it could cause the seed to wash. Therefore, One way to improve pastures is by adding legumes and/or ideally frost seeding would be done without snow cover. It is okay grasses into existing pastures stands, according to Joe Sellers, if snow falls on top of the frost seeding. "Pasture Improvements" continued from page 20 In springs without the traditional freeze-thaw cycles, overseeding can still work when there is adequate soil moisture as cattle hooves can help work the seeds in. Use flash grazing to manage existing grass competition. Frost seeding is the simplest and is likely the least expensive method of adding new forage legumes or grasses to existing pastures. However, while it may be the simplest and least expensive, it can also be the least consistent. Usually the success rate of frost seeding is 60 percent; however, to increase the success rate, select the thinnest pasture sod areas or where bare soil has been exposed due to heavy or over-grazing or disturbance. Pastures that were grazed very short last fall would be good candidates for frost seeding this year. As far as what species work best with frost seeding, red clover has been the Iowa forage species of choice for frost seeding. White clover and birdsfoot trefoil are examples of other legume species that can be frost seeded but with less success than red clover. Generally, frost seeding does not work as well with grasses. Interseeding Interseeding, which involves drilling a legume, grass, or grasslegume mixture into an existing pasture, is typically done from mid-March through late April. Interseeding typically provides more consistent results compared to frost seeding. However, with interseeding, it is important to watch seeding depth. Ideally seeding depth is one-fourth to one-half inch. Planting deeper than that can result in poor stand establishment. To improve the success of interseeding, closely graze the pasture in the fall or spring before interseeding to reduce sod competition. Another option that can be used to help temporarily reduce sod competition is the use of contact herbicides. Use only labeled herbicides for sod suppression, and be sure to read and follow label direction. Soil fertility To help improve the success of both frost seeding and interseeding, adequate soil fertility is important. From a pH perspective, a soil pH of at least 6.5 is recommended for grass, clovers, and birdsfoot trefoil, and for alfalfa a soil pH of 6.9 is recommended. Ideally lime would be applied a year before seeding. Adequate phosphorus and potassium are also important to improve establishment and production. Do not apply early season nitrogen to frost seeded or interseeded areas to minimize early season growth and competition from already established plants in the area. n

Joan Bullin “This is my third year using the calf catcher and I love it! We don’t have calm cows and I’ve never had a problem with any of them hitting it. I could not and would not be in business without it!” Gary Theurer, KS “Everybody needs to own your calf catcher, if they own cows. I couldn’t imagine going through a calving season without it. years ago, and it has grown rapidly. From selling to neighbors at a local level, the company has expanded to include several international markets. Calf Catchers can now be found in every state in the U.S. and every province in Canada, as well as Australia, the United Kingdom, and both Central and South America. “Australia was our first international market beyond Canada. People there discovered us through our website and Facebook promotions,” Leo explained. “Two years ago, I personally introduced the Calf Catchers at a large farm show called AgQuip in New South Wales, Australia. We had amazing interest, so we secured an Australian distributor, and the rest has been history. We now ship containers across the ocean with fifty-plus Catchers in each.” Marketing… The entire Leo family has vested much of their time into the advertising and promoting of the product through print, digital, and social media, and they are quick to point out that their customer testimonials are included in all their advertising. The majority of their sales are the result of customers recommending the Calf Catcher to fellow producers. “The customers are building our business for us, and they are our best salesmen. They buy the Calf Catcher and tell their neighbors how well it works or what a good investment it’s been,” Leo said. “That’s really what has driven the growth of our business to where it is today.” Customer appreciation… Leo’s personal appreciation for his customers is apparent as he can tell a story about many of them, remember what part of the country they’re from, and recall how many neighbors purchased a Catcher due to their recommendations. From the beginning, his personal passion and connection to his customers has been important. “It’s been a fun thing. It’s interesting. It’s one thing marketing to cattle producers in the states, but when you hear from people in other countries like Canada, the UK, Australia, France, Denmark, or Chile, you realize it all started because one cowman bought one, which showed us the early potential,” Leo said. Terrain compatible… The variety of terrain the Calf Catchers are now servicing is true testament to their build and usability. Their durable construction, attachment configurations for both ATVs and UTVs, and additional options that include a digital scale or tow hitch make them a good fit for almost any unique operation. “They’re built really rugged,” Leo said. “One of our customers is actually a retired mechanical engineer, and he told me, ‘With how well you build these units, my kid’s grandkids will be using them years from now,’ and that’s the

32

Livestock Plus Inc.

truth of it. The units are built tough, and they’re built to go over rough country. We’re still using our original unit today. There’s very little maintenance on them.” Successful everywhere… The devices have been sold to commercial and seedstock ranchers as well as to large commercial feedlot calving programs, and they are proving to be successful in every venue. As the industry transitions to the use of ATVs and UTVs more frequently, operations are already set up to use the Calf Catcher with an investment of

$2,000 to $2,500 for the equipment. “Most everybody in the industry today has either an ATV or UTV in their operation already,” Leo said. “So with a pretty low-cost investment, they are set up to continue in their operation about as long as they want to be involved.” That’s the Leo family’s main goal with the business. As an older generation rancher himself, Leo understands not only the desire to remain in the business but also the challenges that come with it. “We have a passion for helping people stay in the business and do what they like to do without getting hurt,” Leo said. “I’ve even got people in their eighties and nineties that are using them. Quite honestly, a lot of people in the cattle industry today don’t have any plans to retire, they don’t know how to retire, or they don’t want to retire. The longer they can stay in the business without getting hurt and without having their family worrying about them, the better they like it. That’s where the Calf Catchers have a huge value.” The large success and fast growth of the Safety Zone Calf Catcher business has certainly changed the lives of the Leo family. Although they have had to shift some of their time and focus from APEX Cattle to the Calf Catcher, the family has managed to run two successful businesses. They still consider the largest successes of the Calf Catcher business to be helping their fellow cattle producers remain safe and to be able to do the job they like easier. COMMENTARY

The Road Ahead in April for Fat and Feeder Cattle by Michael Seek, ; Fox Group at the Board of Trade Last month’s issue reminded you that as Cattlemen you needed to be aware of the inflation pressures building and that it was time to consider feed cost hedging. You’ll notice in the Corn and Wheat charts below that these two markets have busted out on the upside and we have been seeing strong long term call and bull call spread buying on the grain option floor here in Chicago. Of course one of the great debates for years on end is the effect of surging grain prices on Cattle and the answers will differ greatly from the north to the south. You’ve heard the term ‘one two knock out punch’, and this looks quite applicable the rest of the year as a combination of the problems in South America and the inflationary pressures and drought areas looks like the ‘bear’ of the grain markets the last few years has been knocked out and that very sharp rallies are coming throughout this year 2018. Consider the charts below and talk with us about potential hedging ideas that do not involve grain futures on the Board.

As Cattlemen you are aware that the first half of March had severe negative basis on the Fat Cattle and that most everyone in the industry is nervous due to the purported large amounts of supply in the summer to come. We would remind you, however, that the glass is half full and not half empty. Why? Boxed Beef has been rock solid and strong most of this year and you’ll see in the chart down below that Boxed Beef is clearly in an uptrend and we all need to be aware that continued down trends in the US Dollar and good exports and the inevitable drop in ‘Placements’ can overpower the the supply. Too many folks in the cattle industry focus on supply instead of demand. Think about it, Cattlemen and Feedlot managers can look out the window and see supply every day, but they cannot see supply with their naked eye each day and this can cause folks to hedge aggressively and too soon. Talk with us at the Board for hedge ideas on your Fats and Feeders. Want a reason to be bullish [pun intended] on your Cattle ranch this year? Look at the strength of the December Fat Cattle and the August Feeders. Summer may be tricky, but get ready for a barn-burner powerful rally this year from Sept through December.

If you are a bona-fide livestock producer and would like to receive on a complimentary basis for 45 days my daily and weekend ‘Livestock Report’ that includes Fat and Feeder Cattle Valuations, and Lean Hog valuations, as well as Beef and Pork cutout valuations from my office here at Fox Group [clearing through RJ Obrien] here at the Chicago Board of Trade then please call Ms. Michelle White at 312.756.0931 and let her know. And remember, hedging livestock with Chicago Board Cattle or Hog futures or the purchase and sale of grain, energy or financial future or option contracts still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt, or any other holdings they might have. Always consult with your most trusted advisors before taking on risk, whether the intent is hedging or not. n

How I See It by Austin Brandt

66

Sale season is awesome and crazy! With it comes great cattle, lack of sleep, bad roads and procrastination of things a little lower on the list of needing to be done. With that said, I have an article just waiting to get down on paper, but it won’t make it in time for press day. So, I will see you at the next sale and I’ll have an article for you in the May issue as the sale season slows just a tad. As always, feel free to give me a call, anytime, and I am sure I will see you down the road! Austin

Cody’s Column by Cody Crum

Well it’s time for Opening Day and a new season of baseball! Even if you aren’t a baseball fan, you realize that with the start of the season, warmer weather is just around the corner! I’m sure with the winter we had, many of you can’t wait. I hope that even with some of the tough weather conditions that faced us this winter, that you still had a successful calving season. I’m sure that when you see those calves out running and playing in the sun makes all those sleepless nights worth it. One of my favorite things to do on these spring days is to walk through and look at our new baby calves. It’s fun to see your breeding plans come together and see what you need to do differently next year. As you all are well aware, I get to run around all winter long officiating college basketball games so that means I have a few people to thank for all of their support and help at home while I’m gone. A big shout out goes to my wife, Tamar, our parents, Wayne and Kay and Jim and Jan, and our good friend Ben all keep things in line. I can’t thank you all enough! Best of wishes to everyone this spring! God Bless, Cody

I am loving the little bit of spring weather we have been enjoying and I cannot wait to put away the winter coats ...well at least until next fall. Lately after the Big T’s go to bed, Treva and I watch our snapchats of all the new baby calves, sheep and goats! Treva absolutely lights up when I show her my friend, Jennifer Carrico’s snaps of all her baby calves! When Jennifer personalized the snaps and mentions Treva’s name it’s so funny she leans a little closer and then looks at me like, “Did you hear that!” Also, thank you to Katie and Nora Hoge for the super cute baby goat snap! In the video as Katie told Nora “good job,” Treva started clapping for Nora! I think my heart burst a little! Taylor has been helping Tucker study for the upcoming 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl. It’s entertaining listening to them learning about all of the other species, and it especially makes me giggle when Taylor can answer quicker than Tuck. It makes Tuck

try that much harder because he is furious that his little sister might actually be retaining the information better than him. Three of the four quiz bowl teammates met at Zipp’s Pizzaria in Adair, Iowa. This pizza place is phenomenal! Tucker ordered a 10” gyro pizza, thinking he’d take a couple pieces back for Matt. Let’s just say Matt did not get to try the Gyro pizza. Tay and I did not finish our taco pizza, so rest assured, Matt did get some leftovers. I wasn’t as adventurous as Erik, Leslie, and Lukas James. Erik ordered a chili cheese dog pizza, crab rangoon pizza and Lukas got the Big Jim (garlic butter, beef, cheese and after baking special sauce, onion and pickle). I wasn’t close enough to inspect Natalie and Madi Suhr’s pizzas! It was a fun time helping the kids practice and I even got a chance to meet the owners, Jim & Tammy Zimmerline. I cannot even begin to explain all of the specialty pizzas they offer! Check them out on Facebook for their menu and hours. They are right off Interstate 80 in Adair, IA! May God bring you many Spring blessings and please continue to keep our military and our nation in your prayers! God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com www.livestockplusinc.com
