Greetings, Ok this winter isn’t fun anymore! I pray daily for our farmers and ranchers that they can stay positive and continue the fight to keep their livestock safe and healthy. These animal care takers are tough, but their patience is close to the end. Lord, help them.

My food comments kind of happened by mistake as I wondered around the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. After some of the sales at the Classic, and just before Dixie and I were supposed to go out for supper, I happened to sneak into the show ring to visit with some producers only to find the “Classic Steak Cook Off and Battle of the Breeds” was happening. Knowing that I was going to be in trouble if I ate my supper, before supper, I tried to just look and analyze the food preparation, and what was going on with this contest. Well, nope, that didn’t happen. (I have no will power). Ok, it was their fault. They made me sample all that meat.

First, the Simmentals. They had really good meat, with a very persuasive lady promoting their breed, serving the samples with

unbelievable hospitality. The Charolais had a server that was a real joker with a wild concoction that made Charolais beef special. The Hereford folks, a group of ladies that were not ready for me to sample, but I sampled a piece of Certified Hereford Beef that was second to none.

Red Angus was pure and simple the best piece of beef I have ever eaten. I tried my hardest to get the full recipe. David Spencer was the guy in charge when I highjacked that chunk of beef, and with a smile, he informed me if he told me how it was done, he would have to shoot me. Here’s what I can tell you from my investigation, cubed loin, marinated overnight in a unknown marinade, rolled in some kind of flour stuff, then deep fried. It’s my hope that I get invited to the next cookout contest that these folks enter, or wherever they serve this excellent piece of meat next. It was truly the deadliest piece of meat I have had the privilege to eat. Red Angus congrats, you won my judging.

I’m sure that the rest of the breeds would have let me sample, I was just a little premature for their product being done. Congrats to all the chefs of the different breeds, I was truly impressed. A special thanks to Cali Meier and kids and Darla and Harold Hubbard and family for having supper and entertaining Dixie and I while in Kearney.

This has been a tough winter for me on the road and it is my wish that spring come sooner than later. As always, if any of us at Livestock Plus can assist you in finding livestock that you need, please give any of us a call.

Boy has this sale/calving season been one to remember! From sunshine to blizzards, if you live anywhere in the midwest, you have seen it all this year. With all the weather this winter, some of the miles I have put on have been a challenge to say the least. So, when Mike got on me again about writing an article (EVERY MONTH)

I thought, well maybe I do have some road trips that are worth writing about.

During the blizzard that really dumped on the majority of Iowa on February 23rd, I was on my way from Cannon Falls, Minnesota trying to get to Denison, Iowa for the Southwest Simmental Group Sale the next day.

Well, I almost made it all the way there before I found the blizzard and when I found it, I found the heart of it. I was on Hwy 20 headed west and boy did the roads go from great to really bad, really fast! I quit counting cars in the ditch when I got to 30. I counted 2 snow plows, 6 semis and 2 police cars in the ditch as well.

That was by far the worst roads I’ve ever been on and care to ever be on again. I made it all the way to my hotel in Denison for the night but the last 60 miles took me almost 3 hours.

Needless to say, there was no steak and whiskey that night but there was a few cold beers and some Casey’s pizza. After that drive, anything was better than being stuck in a ditch or snow drift!

The next weekend, was a lot less eventful as far as driving conditions but one night I spent in Omaha with a couple other guys, is another reason why I enjoy what I do so much!

The Regional Angus Cheerleader, Adam Conover and the honorable Col. Clint Hunter and I, had a sale to work in Wahoo, Nebraska on Friday.

Adam had kind of put the whole plan together, which was fine with Clint and I. He had the hotel found, the restaurant for the night and a bar we just had to go to round out the night.

So to keep it short and sweet, if you have to stay in Omaha, go to “The Old Market,” find Hotel Deco, walk to Omaha Prime for a steak and then walk to the Wicked Rabbit for a night cap. You won’t be disappointed. If you are, then I guess stop taking my advice and just go where the guy in the front of this magazine tells you to go!

That night was low key but I tell you what, for just a little while, the three of us felt like we were somebody!

I hope to keep this little article a little more regular so if you have anything you want me to write about or have questions about anything, call me, text me, snapchat me, I would love to hear from you!

Learning Love Lessons During Calving Season

Lessons in life never seem to come easy and this calving season has proved to be anything but easy for farmers and ranchers. The bitter cold combined with endless of amounts of snow has brought us all to our knees- Praying for warmer weather and the strength to keep going. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 struck a chord with me the other night and reminded me about the lessons of love we are learning from the livestock God has entrusted to our care.

Love is patient with cattle, especially the first-time heifer mother. We give her time to work through the birth of her first calf. Watching diligently day and night- checking cameras, going out on foot every few hours throughout the night, and praying everything goes smoothly.

Love is kind to a struggling calving mother. Only one leg is coming, meaning the calf is positioned wrong for birth- a leg is backwards. Kindness put the irritated heifer in the pulling pen and works through her furiously hard contractions to push the calf into the correct birthing position. This takes strength and can rack the body of the farmer/rancher but they know it needs done to save the pair.

Love is not jealous of another farmer/ranchers good fortune with calving. No pulls or dead livestock but rejoices with them because that rarely happens and they know how extremely fortunate they are.

Love is not arrogant- it realizes that whatever livestock it has is a gift from God. Even the ability to recognize when a cow/heifer needs extra help, see sickness like scours starting to develop, or just tell something is “off” is a true gift from God that tends to be passed down from cattle producers generation to generation. Maybe it’s the fact that we bundle our children up to do early morning chores with us or keep them in the barns late at night. They are able to unknowingly soak in knowledge while helping hold a calf, muck a stall, or watch dad pull a calf.

Love does not act unbecomingly, seek it’s own, or is easily provoked. It does not get frustrated at the newborn calf that just won’t suck its mother. It works diligently propping the newborn calf next to the mother. Placing the udder tit directly into its mouth and urging it to take in the mother’s nutritious colostrum that will give it life.

Love does not take into account wrong suffered or rejoice in unrighteousness. Love thinks no evil of their tired, cranky spouse. Knowing that you are working long hours together for

the love of your farm/ranch and to provide needed financial resources. Love apologizes when sorting close cattle has made you yell and become angry with each other. Realizing you are both running on no sleep and need each other to get through this cold calving season.

Love rejoices with the truth because there are so many triumphs. The bawl of a healthy newborn calf, numerous cow/calf pairs running through the pastures, heifers willing to claim a twin after they’ve lost their own baby. Family and friends always willing to lend a hand- from grandparents watching children when parents are overwhelmed to loved ones jumping in their pickups and helping with sick calves in the middle of the night.

Numerous people praying when they see you’re barely hanging on. Vets who bring their services but also a listening ear to those of us who are at our wits end with cattle. Acting as a “cattle counselor” and offering encouragement.

Love bears all things; blizzards; 10 pm, 12 pm, 2 am, 4 am, 6 am checks when the body and mind is beat.

Love believes and hopes all things; the heifer pairs will be just what a buyer is looking for and that all of our hard work will pay off.

Love endures all things; Frostbitten ears and tails, mamas that send you flying over the fence, missing events to keep a watchful eye on a young calving heifer. Sleepless nights, mucking and bedding down stalls, and sadly grieving the loss of the ones you just couldn’t save.

Love never fails and neither will our love for cattle or this crazy life. It’s tough, but we thank God for the valuable lessons He teaches us through it all as we care for His creation. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills!

Beef and the Environment Misconceptions Abound Long before the Green New Deal and the EAT-Lancet report made headlines, “Livestock’s Long Shadow” set the stage for years of battles regarding beef and sustainability.

LIVESTOCK’S LONG SHADOW

Published in 2006 by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the original report claimed that 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) are from livestock. However, after the scientific community pointed out flaws in the methodology used to reach that number, the FAO revised Livestock’s Long Shadow to say that livestock is responsible for 14.5% of GHGs. One of the most famous claims in the report is that livestock production contributes more GHGs than transportation.

However, even the FAO admits that it did not compare apples to apples. To calculate the impact of livestock production, the FAO used a life-cycle analysis, including GHGs caused by the entire animal food chain, including feed production, processing, transportation and more. When calculating GHGs from transportation, the FAO only included tailpipe emissions, leaving out the impacts of vehicle maintenance

and transportation infrastructure such as roads and bridges.

It’s important to note that the FAO report focuses on worldwide emissions from livestock production, not just U.S. GHGs. Because of the United States’ advanced technology and research in agriculture, U.S. farmers are more efficient, producing more beef with fewer animals and fewer resources than any other part of the world.

“Livestock’s Long Shadow” has inspired documentaries such as “Cowspiracy” and “Meat the Truth,” which continue to spread misinformation about the beef industry.

EAT-LANCET

Released in January, the EAT-Lancet report is a collaboration between several research-based charities and The Lancet, a medical journal. Its goals, supposedly, are to improve human health and the health of the planet.

The report recommends drastically reducing intake of animal products. The EAT-Lancet’s daily diet includes less than a half an ounce of red meat, less than one ounce of white meat, one ounce of fish, ¼ of an egg, and 9 ounces of milk or 2 oz of cheese.

GREEN NEW DEAL

The EAT-Lancet Report and Livestock’s Long Shadow are not official policy of any government, but they certainly have the potential to impact policy. Such is the case with the U.S. Dietary Guidelines and the Green New Deal.

In February, Rep. Alexandria OcasioCortez of New York and Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts proposed a 10 year plan titled the Green New Deal. The Green New Deal aims to decrease greenhouse gas emissions to zero, while simultaneously increasing economic prosperity.

The vague plan includes the goals of eliminating air travel and cattle.While it is unlikely to be enacted, it has also received a lot of media attention, and unfortunately continues to spread the myth that cattle are bad for the environment.

THE TRUTH

As noted before, there’s plenty of research that clears beef’s name.

• U.S. beef has one of the lowest carbon footprints in the world, 10 to 50 times lower than some nations. Greenhouse gas emissions from cattle account for 2% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions.

• In the U.S., we produce the same amount of beef today with 33% fewer cattle compared to 1977, and 18% of the world’s beef with only 8% of the world’s cattle. This is a result of better animal health, welfare, animal nutrition and genetics.

Q & A with ICA Board Member Tim Meyer In January, ICA board members were interviewed by Delaney Howell for her podcast, Ag News Daily. What follows is an excerpt from Howell’s interview with ICA’s new Associate Vice President, Tim Meyer.

Howell: Tim Meyer is from Harlan, Iowa and is a current Iowa Cattlemen Association board member. Tim, tell me a little bit about your operation.

Meyer: I currently own about 65 cows.

I run them on shares with a caretaker as I’m fully employed. I work in Omaha, Nebraska for Producers Livestock, in charge of their credit division.

Howell: Tell me a little bit more about that because you’re kind of seeing things from both perspectives - you’re seeing it from being a cattle producer and also seeing it the business side of things.

Meyer: Right, I‘ve been able to do that my entire career and it’s helped me.

When someone’s sitting down across the desk from me and putting a projection out, I’ve got a pretty good feel whether that’s an accurate projection or whether that’s really just maybe blowing smoke. It also helps me empathize. I understand we don’t make money on every turn of cattle and I understand that sometimes the cow/ calf thing doesn’t work as well as it should.

So I hope that brings some value to the relationship with the people I’m talking to because I do feel it in my own checkbook and in my own household.

Howell: Absolutely. What are some of the issues that the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is watching right now?

Meyer: I think, obviously, that trade is at the top of the ladder. Traceability is also a major issue out here. Talking to independent sale barn owners, they’re very

Howell: So Tim, as an Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, what role then can you play or can I play as a member to help shape policy?

Meyer: You know, I think we need to work with our legislators. We need to emphasize how important the cattle industry is to the economy of Iowa and to the economy of the U.S. I think we need to really focus on promoting our product as a safe, healthy product. There’s a lot of news out there and it’s not all accurate about what our product is and what it does to you in your daily diet and I think there’s a lot of positive information that needs to get shared and we need to do that.

The Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program is co-sponsored by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. This year’s class includes 30 young cattle producers from across the state.

On February 5 and 6, Session 2 kicked off at Wilkerson’s Farm in Linden, Iowa.

Their farm consists of a 300 head confinement cow/calf operation. They are right in the heat of their calving season and did a great job answering questions and giving insight into the pros and cons of having cows under roof 365 days a year.

The next day at the Capitol brought a flurry of meetings and opportunities to discuss our policy priorities with our legislators.

We started off the day with Kellie Paschke, our ICA contracted lobbyist, who gave us an update on what was happening at the Capitol that day. Representative Pat Grassley also spoke with us about the importance of rural Iowa having a voice when decisions are being made.

Next, YCLP participants were given the opportunity to meet with their legislators. Two of the policy topics discussed were full funding for the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab and additional funds for a Foreign Animal Disease preparedness.

We then walked over to the Wallace Building and met with Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, Julie Kenney; Interim Director of the DNR, Bruce Trautman; and General Counsel for the DNR, Ed Tormey.

Finally, we rounded out the day by meeting with Governor Reynolds in her formal office. She encouraged the participants to stay involved in the lawmaking process and commended them on being a part of the Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program.

concerned about how that affects their business and their clients’ independence in the cattle business. We’ve got to somehow keep our guys out here working for themselves, feeding their own cattle, and having that profit opportunity.

Howell: When you say traceability, what are we talking about? Can you break that down for me a little more?

Meyer: Well, I think what we’re trying to do is provide our consumers with some comfort that the animals that they’re consuming - whether that’s beef, pork, turkeys, chicken, whatever it is - have been well-cared for, have been treated humanely, have been given respect, for lack of a better phrase, in how they were taken care of. It’s a difficult thing because cattle industry comes from all over the country and across Canada, Mexico, and all over the world. So it’s a tough task to track every animal from start to finish and that presents the biggest challenge. But I do know that our feeders out here are doing the very best they can to take good care of their cattle.

COMMENTARY

The Road Behind and Ahead for Fat and Feeder Cattle and Other Markets

by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade

Several years ago a polar vortex and sub-zero weather similar to what the Midwest has just experienced, as well as serious flooding in Nebraska would have helped Cattle on the Chicago Board run for the roses in dramatic fashion, especially with Choice Box Beef so strong through the exact same period and yet this did not happen.

Does this mean we are in a bear market for Cattle? No. Indeed, we only need to compare Cattle on the Board to all other commodity markets this last year when 2018 came to an end and it is clear that Board traded Cattle were one the strongest markets in the world for the year and even finished near the price highs’ of the entire year.

What’s holding back Fats and Feeders? Well, clearly the sale barns have not had much interest when cash prices are too high to have a reasonable shot at locking in 50 to 75 dollars per head in the usual desired period of time. Naturally the sprouts of springtime growth have not broken out of the ground yet and that is always a factor. On the Fat side of the equation the Packers have done a masterful job of managing kill levels and protecting their profit margins. So what can make this a banner year for Cattlemen? Two things come to mind quickly. One, the United States has the capability to fill the likely shortfalls in Australian beef output. Some Aussies think it will take 4 to 5 years to get their Cattle industry back where they are used to it being and as a result the price of beef in Australia has had some price spikes in just the last month or two. Two, Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan has been consistent for well over a year in saying that ‘Stagflation’ is likely. Not familiar with the term? Stagflation stands for ‘Stagnant economic growth with inflation at the same time’. Bring the words ‘Stagnant’ and ‘Inflation’ and you get the ‘Stagflation’. Yes, believe it or not the Fed desires that inflation not slip below 2%. Tell your children and grandchildren they are going to lose 20 to 30% of their purchasing power on their US Dollars for the next 10 to 15 years on a compound basis and you will likely get a perturbed look. The notion of wanting to keep inflation up for benefit of the economic and the jobless rate and eating away at the real value of the Dollar is incredulous and pathetic and yet it has been going on since President Reagan’s days.

So how do Cattlemen stay out in front? Managing costs will be key and since Crude Oil and Ethanol are showing signs of long-term bottoms in place it might be wise to own Corn on the Board to cross hedge some of your future needs. Sale barn participation will need to be highly disciplined and structured with formulas adhered to, otherwise hedging the lower weights will be critical on a short-term basis as well as being nimble with the hedge release’s. Cattlemen, keep one eye on the stock market and remember that if Home Depot and Amazon and other major stocks or overall 401K plans and personal IRA’s take a hit for more than a month or two and we test and break the old lows of the Dow Jones Industrial Average from back at Christmastime that traffic into Texas Roadhouse and Ruth Chris could drop sharply and this would in turn potentially hurt beef demand.

And remember, hedging livestock and feed costs with CBOT or CME instruments still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt. n

Is anyone else tired of this weather yet? My prayers are with everyone that we can continue to fight through and hopefully will be rewarded with a wonderful summer. This has been the most hectic and busy beginning to the year I have ever experienced. Seems like Tamar and I have been going non-stop since Christmas. Tamar is working night and day trying to get everything completed to present her thesis for her PhD. The amount of time and effort she has put in

over the past few years is astonishing! I am excited that she can finally see the end of the tunnel and I hope it makes it all worthwhile!

By the time you are reading this, Lord willing, we will have closed on our home. We are extremely blessed to be able to find a home like we did. It is honestly everything we wanted and more. I will share some pictures once we get moved and settled!

I am also in the middle of wrapping up my basketball season.

Getting the opportunity to work post season is every officials goal and this year I was extremely blessed with many of those opportunities.

I don’t know about you, but I have a hard time remembering this verse from day to day. It seems like I read it as a daily affirmation and then pick up my worries again and again to hold close like a security blanket.

I have to realize that God wants us to GIVE the worries to Him completely. Not hold on to a couple and try to “fix” things ourselves. To me this is one of the most wonderful things God has given us, yet the hardest for me to actually implement!

We have been feeling complete and utter heartache for all the farmers and ranchers that have experienced devastating losses in the crazy winter weather. I truly do not believe we will ever begin to understand or get our minds around it all. “On the eighth day, God looked down on His planned paradise and said I need a caretaker, so God made a farmer ...” (by Paul Harvey). There

really are not words that could encompass the devastation so many have experienced this winter. I know personally, I could never find words to explain my sheer adoration for you, the hard-working men and woman that call yourselves farmers/ranchers. God has given you all the heart, the strength and compassion to do what many cannot. We have been praying for your continued strength and courage to face your losses and the rebuilding of so many years of hard-work. We also pray that you all will continue to lean on God for strength and know without a doubt that you all have so many in your corner continually asking for your heartache to ease.

Understand that you have an entire industry that is behind you always.

Please hold our military, our nation, our first responders and our agriculture industry in your constant prayers.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
