MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings, Sale season is winding down for the year. It’s time to get excited about summer shows, fairs, and some down time. For those of you that wait at your mailbox for every issue of Livestock Plus, thank you, but please remember May/June is together, July is somewhat of a vacation month and get ready for the best August yearbook ever! The food report this month comes from the state of Wisconsin. Roberts, Wisconsin to be exact. Several years ago, I was introduced to Mark Friedrich and his family, through the Hereford industry. Since that time, we have become good friends. It just so happens that I was in River Falls, Wisconsin for the St Croix Bull Test Sale, and Mark asked if I would come eat supper with them. Well, I was with some

other folks, so I suggested that we go out and eat. Mark’s response was, “bring em with ya” we have plenty. So, myself along with our auctioneer, and another ring man headed to the home of Windy Hills Herefords for supper. Mark was not kidding; he and his wife had food, enough food to feed half of the county. As I am remembering the menu: Pork Steak, Pork Chops, Rib-eyes, and T-Bones! How’s that for the meat side of things? We had them all. I just wish I could have had one of everything. Then they added two different kinds of cheesy potatoes, corn, and cowboy beans. A main course fit for anybody. I’m not sure how all that meat got done and done to perfection. I’m assuming Mark had some adult supervision, maybe his bride supervised that grilling process. The whole meal was just perfect. Great job to all that were involved. Last on the evening menu was warm brownies fresh out of the oven with ice cream and caramel. If you have ever heard the term ‘in pig heaven,” that is what it was. I left there so full I felt like a bloated steer. A big thank you to Mark and Angie Friedrich, Kim and Kelly along with Steven Steiner. With much appreciation from, Al, “The SOB,” and myself. We really appreciated the hospitality. We hope that you all have a great summer. Good luck at county, state, and national junior shows. Travel safe and have fun! As always keep our veterans past and present and their families in our thoughts and prayers. God Bless

P.S. Remember next Livestock Plus will be in your mail box in August.

Sullivan’s

Fresh & Feminine •Trust the Science

TM

•For Heifers, Steers & Bulls

This is how this feed supplement works … the superior science of FRESH & FEMININE™ features a combination of strategic vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and a high concentration of by-pass protein sources. This chemistry boosts metabolic fat burning in the body that targets specific areas of the body to reduce fat content, most notably in the neck and brisket area. The animal has a more feminine, attractive physique and even moves better. This helps to offset the results seen from aggressive, high energy show cattle diets.

Raising kids on the farm should come with a warning label… On our farm, things came in multiples in the year 2012. God blessed us with not one, but two VERY ornery identical twin boys. If life wasn’t interesting enough, we welcome another boy in June of 2016. Since the days of our boys, our life has been a wild ride. Every day holds a new adventure in “Raising Boys on the Farm”. The world is their playground. I have found people often ask how I do it. Let’s be honest, there are many moments in my day that all I can do is shake my head and laugh. Kids are funny… very funny! Just the other day I found myself yelling, “LOGAN! No, you can NOT go right there!” We were watching a junior high track meet when suddenly, Logan wonders over to the trees about 500 feet away. I knew exactly what he was up to. He turns around and informs me “But I gotta PEE…” The world is not your bathroom child, find that young polite gentleman I know is in there somewhere and find yourself a bathroom INSIDE of a building, not on the SIDE of a building. All I could do was laugh, sorry — he’s a farm kid… it’s bred into him. When the trees need watering, and you’ve got water, what seems to be the big issue. Fast forward a few days, Papa and Dad are doing field work and are parked in the driveway discussing the day’s plan. The boys find their way down the driveway to check in with the men. Papa was just politely discussing with Dad that he was going to “haul chicken ****” and just like that… it was repeated. So as I sit here this morning, have no fear — my sons are “hauling chicken poop” across my living room floor. What will the future hold… stay tuned, it’ll be good… n

Spring is HERE! Later this month, Tamar and I will hit a big milestone in our lives, yet again. We will be celebrating our first anniversary together. It is hard to believe that it has been a year already since we said our vows! Our wedding day is still such a vivid memory in our minds, as it was such a fun and amazing day spent with some of our best friends and family! I guess the old saying “time flies when you’re having fun” applies here. As we look back on our wedding day, it is humbling to see how far we have come – settling into our home, growing our cow herd, making adult decisions and doing “married” people things. It has been a learning experience, but one we have enjoyed! We have been told that you will love each other more each day together – and we have learned that to be very true! Why is that all those things you are told when you were younger (but often didn’t want to hear) turn out to be true? Even without the big anniversary, spring is always an exciting time of year. Planting season is getting underway, baby calves are on the ground, weather is warming up, grass is green, and baseball is back! For us here in west central IL, farmers are chomping at the bit. Getting seed in the ground has been hit and miss, as we try to work around all the rain showers we have had over the last month. April showers, bring May flowers. All the rain has most certainly brought on the green grass and blooms. It sure is fun and rewarding to see all the calves running and playing in the pasture – all our hard, thought out genetic decisions have come to reality! As farmers are hitting the fields, I pray

Muller Embryo Transfer Facility 1231 Highway F24 • Earling, IA 51530 Tyler Muller (712) 579-1968 for a safe planting season for all! Since I won’t be writing another column until summer show season is coming to a close, I want to wish everyone safe travels and much luck as show season gets underway. Juniors – this note is for you: While competing in the show ring and coming out with that purple is the goal, remember that the relationships you make and the skills you develop will be what sticks with you for the rest of your life. Enjoy every minute of being a junior because it goes SO fast – take advantage of all the opportunities you can! You never know who you might meet…perhaps your new best friend, a future employer or co-worker, or maybe your future spouse. Have fun and good luck! Thank the good Lord for another beautiful spring and take some time to cheer on your favorite baseball team! God Bless and Go Rockies! Cody

I hope everyone had a Blessed Easter! I have a fun story about my very thoughtful daughter, Taylor. She thinks things through in ways that always leave me scrambling for a response. Let me start by saying she still believes wholeheartedly in Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, etc. I love that she still believes, it’s that innocence I want to keep intact for her as long as possible. The morning after Easter, while we used her new Under Armor headband, she very seriously says, “Mom how do you suppose the Easter Bunny shops at VonMaur?” She continues without missing a beat, “When I get older, I’m going to work at VonMaur and count all the money in the cash register before I leave so I can see if he really pays for things.” At this point I can’t make eye contact because I know I’m smiling and I feel like she is going to work it out in her mind what

happens. “I bet he has help because otherwise how would you have known what area he hid our baskets, Mom! Does he know your phone number?” As I sighed in relief I answered, “Yep! Parents help!” Tay had come to that conclusion about Santa too. According to big brother, Tucker, I need to keep letting her believe. He did not appreciate being told the truth, but he also didn’t question everything like Taylor! Enjoy your babies no matter how old they are, time goes by too fast! I wish everyone a Happy Spring and Summer! Our next issue will be our Yearbook Issue (State Fair issue) in August! Give us a call in July for all those ads!!! Good luck to exhibitors showing and selling this summer! Send me lots of fun kid pics! Please keep our military and our nation in your constant prayers. God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com
