MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com
Greetings, Summers gone, where did it go? Dixie and I have been moving for what seems like the last 2 months. To keep everybody abreast of what’s happening in our life, we sold our house in town and are building a little house on our acreage where both of us have wanted to be for a long time. Yes, I know it’s backwards from most, most want to sell the country house and move to town. I have always been pretty much backwards. For temporary we are living 6 miles from everything. (Inside joke) I have a unique food story for this month. About a month or so ago, Anne Patton Schubert from Taylorsville, KY contacted me about judging at the 2017 All American Certified Angus Beef Cook Off, “The Chef’s Challenge” division, in Des Moines Iowa. That sounded like a no brainier for me. People bringing me food to sample and certified Angus on top of it. I’m in!!! So I along with Shauna Hermel, and Bruce Kiesewetter were the judges. Here’s the deal; these folks had to prepare a meal in an hour and impress the three judges. The tough part is that they had a grocery bag full of stuff they had to use and they
didn’t know what it was until 24 hours before the contest, and they had to use everything. Here is the contents of the bag: Certified Angus Beef Flat Iron Steak, Millstream Root beer 1 bottle, Steizing Potato Chips, Maytag Blue Cheese, Iowa Corncob syrup, and Fresh Brussels Sprouts. Keep in mind they had to use it all in something. We actually got to walk around ask questions as they prepared this feast. We had folks from all over the country and everyone very different with different cooking styles. A big thanks to the parents of these young people. Their manners and respectfulness was refreshing, and someone taught these kids cooking skills. Absolutely not one bad steak, all seasoned, prepared, and presented differently and they had a reason for it all. Brussels sprouts, what can I say? I have not ever eaten, or had any plans to eat them. We had four totally different preparation styles of Brussels sprouts. What does a person do when you need to comment on them? I dove into them like I had a mission, and I guess I will have to say they aren’t bad, especially the way they were prepared. I could see where they could be pretty plain if prepared incorrectly. Now I am not saying I will rush out and buy a bushel but I sure won’t turn them down if offered. Ok, on to the little extras. The first team supplied southern sweet tea with the most different cooking style. They used a cast iron skillet for almost everything. Second team, and a team of one, had to win showmanship with a fancy boat shaped dish carrying the Brussels sprouts, and a Root beer float, great job. Team three just plain good southern kids that probably through thick and thin would bring you a good meal every time. Team four, and our only adult team, could have stood lots more competition, preparation was an unbelievably deadly sauce for the flat iron, sprouts were great, and the best part of this team was the chocolate covered potato chips with sea salt. I honestly thought I would be full to the max, but Bruce kept telling me, “pace yourself we

What to pack for County Fair by Cristen Clark
FAMILY, FARM LIFE, FOOD & SWINE
Ready or not: it is time for county and state fairs across the good ‘ol U.SA. Families will descend on fairgrounds with livestock, various projects and exhibits that they have put lots of time and effort into. This week is a time to enjoy old friends, make new ones and have a great “fair” experience. The question many families find themselves asking while heading out the driveway to the fair is… “ARE WE FORGETTING ANYTHING?” Unfortunately, the answer is nearly always yes and the question should be posed more like: What ALL are we forgetting? So, in an effort to combat things being forgotten, I polled some of my friends who show regularly about their “must-bring” items. They submitted ideas across the board from basic necessities to off-the-wall goodies that will make fair-life a little easier on the whole family. This is not an end-all-be-all list, but perhaps a gentle reminder to remember some things that are easy to forget when you think you’ve packed it all. I’ll start with a little list that Mike and I made up while traveling back from a recent show in Louisville. He thinks very practically, I think of things that we may end up needing (above and beyond the obvious, especially with kids in tow)… when we meet in the middle, we don’t over pack yet have enough to get by, when we are lucky.| Again: this isn’t a complete list, just review this post after you’ve taken an initial stab at a packing list (ie: feed/watering supplies, brushes, show sticks, etc.)… you may find something you’ll need! Thanks to Shari, Crystal, Angie, Laura, Heidi and Thomas for your contributions! Don’t Forget: Zip ties/wire – this should go without saying. Mike adds: “You never know when you will have to cobble together a gate or something.” Pliers/sidecutters – easy to forget but oh-so-helpful. Shop broom – to keep the aisles in the barns clean, especially important if there is a herdsmanship award given. An extra 5 gallon bucket – having a small trash receptacle in the tack pen keeps everything a little neater. Large garbage bags/Small grocery sacks – for trash at the show, a means of transporting dirty clothes, etc. Baby Wipes/Hand Sanitizer Wipes/Handsoap & paper towels– keeps sticky kids clean(er) and happier. Extra changes of clothes – this goes without saying. Sweaty kids, water-gun fight aftermath, wash rack messiness, sometimes a change of clothes saves the day. (*Keep an extra pair of shoes in the car, only to wear in the car. Also, an old towel to sit on is always nice.) A fan… for PEOPLE. – Usually fair-time is a hot time of year and fans are needed to keep livestock cool and happy. Bring an extra fan to keep the people happy too, always a bonus if a grandparent or small child is overheated. Plenty of chairs to sit in – never underestimate the happiness of your tired feet when you get off of them. Chain and padlock – things usually don’t grow feet and walk away, but occasionally borrowed items don’t make it back, likely

because people forget who they borrowed them from. Chain up anything you want to keep, especially overnight. FIRST AID KIT – when I remember take a few bandages in my purse, I feel amazing about my mothering abilities, but always seem to need more supplies – just my luck. I bought a first aid kit on Amazon and it is loaded with goodies like ibuprofen, acetaminophen, bandages, antibiotic ointment, gauze, ice packs, you name it! Better safe than sorry because when you need the communal county fair first aid kit it always seems to be devoid of whatever items you need. A Sharpie – to write your name on various belongings. AND: If you have tiny kids, write your cell phone number on their arm, or on a piece of duct tape and put it on the back of their shirt. If you are at a bigger fair and they get lost, someone can call you right away instead of going through the pain of extra time with a missing kid and embarrassment of having your name announced and “LOST CHILD” in the same sentence over the fair P.A. system. Here are more ideas from my friends around the Midwest! The Credit Card “It is inevitable that something will be forgotten or something will go less than ideal when at the show. You didn’t bring enough Final Bloom, forgot the showstick, heaven forbid you blow a tire. Or maybe the show goes so well that you will want to do a little celebrating – donuts for everyone, cold ones for the adults or a steak supper for your crew that helped you achieve your goals. P.S. showing ain’t cheap, but there is no better way to spend time with family and friends.” – Crystal Blin – co-owner of JJB Cattle Co. and blogger, Crystal Cattle Kid Friendly Food Choices and Binder-Vault of Info “My ‘don’t leave home without it anymore’ items for stock shows are lifesavers! People laugh, but I have a microwave that I bring in the trailer, along with a big Rubbermaid tote full of instant mac ‘n cheese, microwave popcorn, hot dogs, hot chocolate, cheese dip, and of course all of the kid necessities like fruit by the foot, chips, cookies etc. Once we get to the show, if it’s hot and we have the electricity hooked up to the trailer, I just put the microwave in the nose and have ready-make-snacks! If we don’t hook up the electricity, I have been known to carry my microwave into the barn and make lunch in the corner by an outlet. This has saved us many dollars worth of concession stand food that the kids may or may not finish! The other thing I don’t leave home without anymore, I actually got from a fellow show Dad. I have a black binder with page protectors that is filled with registration papers, pig weights, health papers, safety pins for exhibitor numbers, a checkbook, a pen etc. I keep it all in the binder and the binder never leaves the truck!” – Shari Bakker, Monsanto Mom-of-The-Year Nominee and show mom, find her family’s business at: Bakker Bros. Genetics The “Go Box” “Don’t forget the pigs! Seriously, we put them on the list every time because it could happen. Or other go to is the “go box.” We keep paper goods, silverware, BBQ tools, extra garbage bags and some snacks. It also has wipes, hand sanitizer, sunscreen and first aid. We keep a few snacks and maybe a t-shirt in there in case Armageddon strikes. It’s always ready to go when we decide at the last minute to take off. There may or may not be a bottle of Tito’s in there! The most important thing we have at a show is our show family. If we’ve forgotten something, they will have it.” – Angie Mowbray – promotional marketing genius and creator of all my Food & Swine gear. Safety Pins, Hair Stuff I’m not a show mom, but I pack the tack box and coolers now that I’m old enough! Some of the “odd” things we pack usually are safety pins, not necessarily odd but often forgotten are safety pins, hairspray and hair ties! As a family Dunn of girls we always need hairspray and hair ties, but

NEWS RELEASE
IHBA Launches Hereford Steer Futurity at 2017 Iowa State Fair $1,000 to the Champion
(PLEASANTVILLE, Iowa) The pinnacle of steer shows in Iowa is undoubtedly the 4-H Market Beef Show at the Iowa State Fair. Sure, the fortunate two steers that make the Sale of Champions garner much attention. However, the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association has set out to grab some of the spotlight this August when they hand a $1,000 check to the top Iowa-bred Hereford steer at the 4-H show. $500 will go to the Reserve, and $250 to the Third Overall. “The ultimate drive of this effort is to enhance the Hereford steer trade in Iowa, but the benefits to the breed reach much further than that,” stated Patrick Wall, IHBA Board Member who’s spearheading the steer futurity. “We want kids to look for red baldy steers come this fall. We’ve got some breeders raising
really good ones, and they can’t all be herd bulls. We’d love for Herefords to be the biggest class of the day in 2018!” “Some Iowa breeders and related ag businesses really stepped up to support this program in its inaugural year. Weeping Fox Ranch, Signature Signs, and the Classy Fox Boutique teamed up to sponsor the Champion. Deppe Bothers and Lowderman Auction Options sponsored the Reserve. Mike Sorenson Family and PAW Livestock handled the Third Overall. Additional promotional support from EDJE Technologies and Livestock Plus has been a big help.” Wall stated. In order to qualify for the futurity, the steer must be born and bred in the state of Iowa via the American Hereford Association (AHA) registration paper. Animals that are the result of embryo transfer may qualify, but the donor dam must be solely owned by Iowa breeder(s). Steers are then nominated for the program by IHBA members by April 1st for a fee of $50. DNA samples of the winners are collected at the conclusion of the show for parental verification. Bred and owned steers raised by junior members are also encouraged to participate. The Iowa State Fair 4-H Market Beef Show is set for Wednesday, August 16th at the fairgrounds in Des Moines. For additional information regarding the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association Steer Futurity visit www.iowahereford.org or contact Patrick wall at 515-450-7665 or email: patwall@iastate.edu. n

the safety pins are for the exhibitor number. We don’t have a clip or a harness to wear and always used to lose the safety pins that we needed for our exhibitor numbers! Also, something that a coworker of mine suggested and that they pack are baby wipes that are chilled by freezing them, or keeping them in the cooler. We get dirty at the fair and it’s HOT so using the baby wipes on our faces to cool us down and clean up a bit is nice.” – Laura Yoder The Backpack “Our kids each have a backpack they bring to the show that contains their choice of items and activities, a change of clothes and a football. I tell ya the show moms are an integral part of the shows, as everyone already knows. Sometimes I wish I could give awards to the moms too! The fact that we stay up to wee hours in the night making snacks, helping pack the trailer and rounding up all of the kids…might be a reason I always forget something for myself!” Heidi Rohrig, Livestock Plus Inc. Show Dad Sleep Deprivation Survival Kit “It is no question the weeks/months of preparation for a show can be summed up in what seems less than a minute in the ring. That can carry a pretty stressful burden on any show parent. Though this kit may not save you from every opportunity to explode… it will definitely put a little extra bounce in your step. Aleve (or cheap knock off): No explanation needed…things are going to hurt by the end of the week. ‘Spark’ or caffeine of choice: This may be one of the biggest gifts from above for show parents…this stuff is legit. Feel a little tired or loss of focus…one scoop and your back in the game BIG TIME! ‘Rehydrate’ or an electrolyte drink: Well, this may taste like a churched up glass of salt water, but if you're not drinking enough of ‘the right kind of fluids’ during the show week…you are likely a bit dehydrated and this stuff works like a champ. Take it every night and thank me in the morning. I think we all get so busy taking care of our kids and the animals, we forget about ourselves and get behind. This will help you feel better.” – Thomas Titus – Dad, Farmer, Agvocate and part time show pig enthusiast n

There were few Cattlemen that were not dancing the Texas Two Step with their best girl less than eight weeks ago with Cash Cattle soaring and yet Cattle markets have now done what many livestock folks thought unlikely and that was a sharp 20% sell off on the Five Area Choice Steer, from 148 to 118 per cwt. And now many Cattlemen fear that the best days of the year are behind us. However, while Boxed Beef cutouts have fallen out of the sky the last 2 weeks it will interest you to know that Fat Cattle for August are still up twice as much percentage wise than the Choice Boxed Beef are for the year to date, measured January 1st thru Friday, July 7th. Many livestock producers are still unaware of just how powerful the exports and demand side of the equation are and the new President and his right-hand man, Commerce Secretary and billionaire Wilbur Ross, are doing everything they can as ‘business-people’ to make livestock producers financial lives’ better. Add into this equation the fact that the U.S. Dollar is down over 600 since this year 2017 began and you have a glass that is not half-empty but rather half-full and the future looks bright indeed. In fact, some old veterans believe that it is possible that much of the herd expansion that so many feared would hurt cattle prices is quite possibly already a tad over 75% done and baked in the cake. Weights are up a bit short term, yet still way down from a year ago. The correction in Cattle prices has been painful and made more than a few cattle bankers reach for antacids a few times, however, it would not have been healthy for the Fat Cattle to go on up to 155 and then 160 without breathing [correcting] as they have. Sustainable bullish Fat and Feeder Cattle markets, as a result of current powerful exports and demand should be expected, not hoped for. Hog markets basis the July front month have soared for almost 11 weeks in a row, with almost day to day and week to week price growth in the Carcass and the Loin, Butt, Pic and Ham and Belly cuts staying strong. Pork markets have the inflation rates of Mexico and Japan moving north out of the dungeon of yester year and said inflation rates will fuel the currencies of those countries and allow them to buy even more meat from our United States of America. While Hog markets are not deeply discounted relative to the Fed Cattle markets, they are still reasonably cheap and 32% less than July 2014, albeit twice the price of this recent October. As long as the Dollar stays soft and the credit bubbles of China do not pop and set off a domino effect we should assume Hogs will follow Cattle to higher ground later this year. Corn markets? The gentlemen we think are the smartest and most competent guys, the Ethanol guys, have been downstairs on the Corn option floor for the last few months and seem to be sitting on a lot of September Corn Call spreads with bullish deltas. Corn has been up most the year on a year to date basis and as this write goes to publication the Corn is up 33’0 on the year while Soybeans that have been negative for most of the year to date are now up 52’0 cents basis new crop Beans. The ramifications of Ethanol combined with drought and also likely ‘below trend-line yields’ is a powerful recipe for new crop to head to 493’0 to 500’0 per bushel. And the hard working Midwest that helps feed our world sure deserves a jolt up of a dollar per bushel. If you are a bona-fide livestock producer and would like to receive on a complimentary basis for 45 days my daily and weekend ‘Livestock Report’ that includes Fat and Feeder Valuations and respective Boxed Beef valuations from my office here at Fox Group [clearing through RJ Obrien] here at the Chicago Board of Trade then please call Ms. Michelle White at 312.756.0931 and let her know. And remember, hedging livestock with Chicago Board Cattle or Hog futures or the purchase and sale of Corn contracts still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt.n

IMMUNITY
We spend our time and money immunizing and treating our livestock with antibiotics in an effort to preserve/increase the overall well being of the animal. In order to achieve this, the animal’s immune system has to be in good condition. The health of the immune system is reliant on many factors, particularly the animal’s nutrition. The immune response of the animal is regulated by antibody producing enzyme systems. The main contributors to the enzyme systems are trace minerals such as zinc, manganese, copper, iron, magnesium. When absorption of these critical minerals are increased, enzyme system production also increases. This results in overall improvement of the immune system. The immune system has three types of responses to defend against disease. The three types are: species, innate (non-specific) and adaptive (specific). Species immunity means that the animal (ie, Bovine species) is not susceptible to that particular disease. The innate (non-specific) defense is comprised of phagocytes, neutrophils and natural killer cells. They are indiscriminate (non-specific) in their defenses and are not linked to a specific antigen. They are the first line of defense against a disease. The formation and production of these cells are dependent upon trace minerals (mainly zinc and copper). Adaptive (specific) or acquired immunity (from vaccinations) comes from the exposure to specific antigens. When an animal is exposed to specific diseases, antibodies called lymphocytes (primarily B and T cells) are produced to combat that disease. Short-term immunity comes from antibodies in colostrum, whereas long-term immunity comes from actual exposure to disease or vaccinations (artificial exposure). When an antigen is introduced into the system, immunoglobulin’s (mainly IgG1, IgG2, and IgM) are produced by B cells to directly respond to that specific antigen. This reaction is controlled by enzyme systems that require trace
minerals (mainly zinc and copper) to function. In a normal situation IgM is first produced followed by IgG1 and IgG2. Due to the large molecular size of IgM (900,000 daltons) it is mainly found in the blood stream, it cannot pass through cell membranes. Even though IgM is the first reaction of an animal’s adaptive immune response, it has very little to do with intercellular immune function. IgG antibodies have a smaller structure (of 180,000 daltons) and can pass through cell membranes and yet can still function in the circulatory system. The IgM:IgG ratio can be used to determine if the immune system is functioning correctly or not. The ratio should be between 1:1 to 1:15 (Figure 1) if the system is performing as it should. The ratio gap will widen if
not. A wide ratio is most often caused by deficient IgM production meaning lower levels of IgM in the blood. This causes problems with the animal’s initial specific immune response. Decreased immunoglobulin function is a result of zinc and copper deficiency. Decreased IgG production is linked to a magnesium deficiency.

IMMUNITY T-Cells are the location for cell-mediated immune activity, activating macrophages, natural killer cells and cytokines. The T-cells are produced in the thymus and becomes sensitized when ex-
increases activity and stress hormones (adrenaline and cortisone) are released increasing the amount of oxygen. One cause of this initial buildup could be a deficiency of the vitamin and minerals that cause a reduction of the antioxidant enzyme levels. Another could be high intake of fermentable carbohydrates with increase metabolism and digestion. With more readily absorbed minerals, NuTech Amino Acid Chelate improves the animal’s ability to detoxify free oxygen radicals. When an animal is dealing with illness and the accompanying stress, the duodenum’s ability to absorb inorganic minerals is reduced. If the duodenum cannot absorb minerals just adding more will not solve the problem, changing the location of mineral absorbtion however can. Amino acid chelated minerals are absorbed in the jejunum of the small intestine avoiding the obstacles of the duodenum. Many minerals rely on one another to perform so a well rounded mineral program is a must. Animals that are deprived early in life may never achieve maximum immunity protection even if presented with a mineral regimen later. Good mineral levels for the animal are required throughout life to maintain a full functioning immune system (Figure 2).
posed to a specific antigen. This results in the formation of a memory cell that will respond quickly to an antigen if or when it is reintroduced. T-cells rely on zinc, copper and iron to function properly. Trace minerals influence processes such as T-cell maturation, neutrophic response time to infections and formation of lymphocytes. Within mitochondria, the Electron Transport System is used to make ATP (energy). A byproduct of this is a superoxide radical (O2-) which damages the cell making it more susceptible to disease. This will occur unless the body is able to produce enough antioxidants (mineral dependent enzymes) to neutralize it. (Free radicals are also released by phagocytic activities). Antioxidants reduce the superoxide radicals to water and O2. The enzymes and minerals required are copper/zinc, and manganese superoxide dismutatse, catalase, and glutathionc peroxidase (GPA). Necessary minerals are; copper, zinc, manganese, iron and selenium (Table 1). Cells detoxify free radicals first by using superoxide dismutase enzyme. The superoxide dismutase converts O2- to hydrogen peroxide. Then H2O2 is broken down either by catalase or glutathione peroxidase (depending on the environment) into H2O and O2. When O2 radicals build up, the immune system

NEWS RELEASE
2017 Carcass Challenge Winners Announced Six years ago, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association developed a program to benefit Iowa cattle producers and friends of the industry. The Carcass Challenge Contest showcases Iowa’s feeder cattle genetics and feedyard performance; offers a fun, competitive statewide contest to demonstrate Iowa’s beef production opportunities and advantages; and raises non-dues revenue, which the ICA then invests in educational events for all sectors of the beef industry. Educational Opportunities The 2016-17 Carcass Challenge Contest included a few changes for the program. For starters, the 2016 Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program (YCLP) class recruited a record setting number of 81 head of steers to be fed at Kennedy Cattle Company of Atlantic. The steers were delivered in early November and marketed in May. Proceeds from the steers help fund YCLP. Throughout the program, data was gathered to be used for educational purposes. Bi-weekly email communications with sponsors and donors provided updates on the steers and educational information on the data collected. David Trowbridge and Faye French with Gregory Feedlots, along with Matt Groves with the Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity Coop, played a major role in developing advanced educational materials. New charts and graphs were created to display the data that was collected and showcase different performance traits, offering an opportunity to “see” the steers’ performance on paper. Program participants were able to see how genetics and pre-contest environment affected the cattle. In early February, ICA and Kennedy Cattle Company hosted an open house at the feedlot for everyone involved with the program. By that point in time, the steers had been on feed for three months, weighed twice, ultrasounded twice by Isaiah Shnurman, interpreted by Mark Henry with The Cup Lab and reimplanted. The group was presented with educational charts and graphs and given the opportunity to visit with Trowbridge and Groves and discuss the information as a group. Zak and Mitch Kennedy also shared their philosophy on feeding and handling cattle. Winners Announced On June 1st, ICA hosted the Sixth Annual Carcass Challenge Banquet at the Iowa State University Alumni Center in Ames. The audience was presented with Mallorie Wilken, Ph. D. with Elanco

Animal Health on the benefits of using modern technology to advance their cattle’s performance in the feedlot. The keynote speaker of the evening was Bob Fields with Global Protein Solutions. Bob presented very positive and thought provoking information to the group of Iowa cattle producers and friends of the industry. Much was taken away from Bob’s presentation on cattle marketing, domestic and international trade and bringing back full-circle to the end consumer from a retailer’s point of view. Awards were presented to the Top 10% of the number of steers in the contest based off the contest performance and carcass data that was taken at harvest on May 2nd at the Tyson Plant in Dakota City, SD. The main award is for Retail Value per Day on Feed (RVDoF). The RVDoF is a measurement of profitability and a value-added calculation that consider important consumer quality issues such as tenderness and flavor. Additional awards given in the contest were for the Highest Average Daily Gain, Largest Ribeye Area, Highest Marbling Score and the Chef Award, which recognizes a 12-14 inch ribeye with the highest marbling score. The winners all received an engraved rawhide banner and cash or merchandise award. The top winning steer donors were award a check for $5,000, which this year’s winners have graciously donated back to the ICA. The 2017 winner of the Carcass Challenge Contest in the RVDoF went to John Wessels with Pine View Angus of Colesburg and Mike Cline with Har-Mar Farms of Elgin. In second place, the award went to Rex Hoppes and Mike Henderson with John Wessels with Pine View Angus, Advanced Beef Linda Cline and Mike Cline with Har-Mar Farms. Genetics of Anita. The third place winner was Brian McCulloh with Woodhill Farms of Viroqua, WI. In fourth place was JD Morris of Algona and the Kossuth County Cattlemen and fifth place was Carl Bormann of Bancroft, also sponsored by the Kossuth County Cattlemen. Jim Bradford and the Guthrie County Cattlemen took home the sixth place award. The Jones, Delaware & Dubuque County Cattlemen steer raised by Jason Kurt walked away with the seventh place winnings. And in eighth place, the award went to Brad Balsley of Floyd and Bob Noble of Riceville. The winners of the individual categories were Pine View Angus and Har-Mar Farms for the Chef’s Award and the Highest Marbling Score of MDAB07, the highest marbling score ever held in the history of the contest. The winner of the Largest Ribeye went to Advanced Beef Genetics with a 17.1 inch ribeye area. Advanced Beef Genetics also took home the award for the Highest Average Daily Gain of 5.20 pounds per day. Young Cattlemen Begin Recruiting Efforts The Carcass Challenge provides the Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program (YCLP) with not only funding, but a team project to encourage leadership skills. YCLP class members recruit steers and donors for the program, and proceeds from the sale of the steers funds the next class of YCLP participants. The ICA would to thank the sponsors, donors and everyone involved with the program. We are already making plans for the next Carcass Challenge Contest. The deadline for registering a spring 2017 steer for the contest is October 6th. Details and entry requirements can be found on the ICA website www.iacattlemen.org under the ICA Programs tab. The 2017 YCLP class will soon be working on recruiting steer donors for the contest, but anyone interested in participating in the program can call the ICA office at 515.296.2266 to get involved. n

Cody’s Column by Cody Crum
For many of us, summer is a crazy busy time. We are running ragged trying to make all the kids games, shows, camps and everything in between. Many of our friends are off enjoying vacations all over the world but we can’t leave home because we need to rinse calves every day. Your friends don’t understand why you can’t go out to eat until 9pm because you have to turn cattle out of the show barn. But I know you wouldn’t have it any other way. Because when you see your son/ daughter/niece/nephew or whoever it may be, walk into the showring with a huge grin on their face, it makes it all SO worth it! Tamar and I are in a different phase than many of you because we don’t yet have children…and don’t get any ideas, not quite yet! We still are always running around to different shows and events looking at the cattle and spending time with friends and family. I wanted to tell you all about something that really encouraged me this summer. A couple years ago I was volunteered to help with our

county fair cattle show. Then the next thing I realize, I am a beef superintendent. I wasn’t overly excited about it at first but I came around and I very much enjoy it now. I have seen our show nearly double in numbers over the past couple years. We all know that county fairs won’t ever be what they used to be, but I was very encouraged by what I saw this year. We had some great cattle and the competition was very tough. But that’s not what encouraged me the most…I saw a lot of new faces in the show ring this year! For most of those kids it was their very first year and some even their first show. They didn’t have a clue what they were doing and their cattle showed it. Let’s make it a point to offer those people some help or advice. Be a mentor to a new young kid or family that is interested in this thing we have all grown a passion for. Be an encouragement to them. We all know the impact raising and showing cattle has had on our lives. It teaches life values and lessons, they wouldn’t get anywhere else. Let’s pass that on to as many people as we can. Best of luck to everyone still exhibiting cattle this summer and I look forward to seeing you at a sale very soon! Please join with me in praying for our brothers and sisters facing this extreme drought in the Dakotas and Montana. God Bless and Go Rockies! Cody

Holy buckets “summer break” is not what l” it used to be when I was growing up, I believe gina i r O it was also called the lazy days of summer! It “the 1984 was probably crazy for my parents too, I'm just since not remembering. Our older T's (Tucker and Taylor) are involved in 4H Summer Extension Camps, Tucker had basketball camp, Taylor in tennis and SWCC D r a m a Camp and last but certainly not least the Iowa Swine Jackpot Series. Now I realize this is just the tip of what they could actually be involved in, but decisions had to be made about our time with raising livestock. I also realize my feeling of being overwhelmed contributes somewhat to our Baby T, who by the way is a ray of sunshine in our crazy lives! As Matt so eloquently said the other day, “I don't feel like we are months behind anymore, it's more like years!” That being said, we may not have had our jackpot gilts exactly where they needed to be this year. The kids worked even harder and still wanted to be at as many shows as possible. They had been working so much more on showmanship, but Tuck hit a snag when he broke his hand. It did, however, make him work even harder to become more fluid using his non dominant hand. Needless to say, we didn't kill it in the banner department, but my absolute joy comes from the friendships these kids make with what they call our “pig family.” Iowa Swine Jackpot Series, you all should be very 3.
