Is it just me, or did we miss the best part of spring? My recollection of spring, first it was jacket wearing cold, to State Fair hot, in the matter of twelve hours, and then repeated itself like three or four times. Well, we are now in summer, and definitely at State Fair hot. Guess the smart people say when you sweat you get rid of the poison in your body, I have gotten rid of a bunch of poison, not sure how much poison can be left. In reminiscing over my summer activities to come up with the best dining story, I had to come home. The best one that comes to mind, and it was awesome, was out of my freezer, born just north of my office window, and grilled on my Trager on the west side of my garage. The sire and dam are both still here eating my dry grass and consuming my winter feed prematurely, out of that same window. Some of you are probably questioning why I didn’t use my Blackstone grill instead of my Trager that I have been bragging on for a year or so. Well, here’s the story. I like the Blackstone for bacon, eggs, hamburgers, patty sausage, hashbrowns, and stir fry. I like my Trager for steak, brats, and smokin’ roast, pork loin, and brisket, and this will be the shocker for a lot of you, my air fryer does pork chops that are to die for. Ok, back to the steak. The sire was the Hereford bull “Frank,” the cow “Fawne” both are Herefords so as the Hereford folks would say, the steak was certified CHB. When I bought that Trager grill, the salesman told me to make a perfect T-Bone or Ribeye steak on the Trager, warm up the grill, put steak on, mix one adult beverage, when its gone, turn the steak, mix another adult beverage consume it, take steak off the grill and eat it. Well, that’s almost correct, but I think he was either thirstier than me

or I just mixed a big one, just make sure you have a short drink glass for your timer. For seasoning, I have tried a bunch of different seasoning, but it seems I always revert back to Baldrige seasoning. I’m open for suggestions on seasoning if you know a great one. I guess I can brag on the sire, dam, the steer, his flavor, his tenderness, and possibly his owner for having the correct size of adult beverage glass for proper timing and correct seasoning. CHB, it sure works for me. This summer has been full of softball, baseball and even some AAU basketball. I have eaten at a bunch of concession stands and just believe me, there is a difference. My vote for number 1 concession stand is Nodaway Valley both high school and grade school concessions at two different locations in Greenfield. The reason they get number one; condiments, and brats. They have onion, pickles, and ketchup all on ice and great brats. Number two is Creston football concessions. They have the best hot dogs ever (need to get onions back, darn covid). Dixie and I have had a great summer, seen lots of ball games, been in a bunch of parades for Ray “Bubba” Sorensen and are very impatiently waiting for football, volleyball, and basketball games to start. We hope that all of you folks have had as enjoyable a summer as we have. Sale season is getting very close again. We hope that we can help you plan and participate in your sale. Contact me or one of our sale staff members for any info you may need. Please keep our military past and present and their families in your thoughts and prayers. Please pray for intelligence for our country’s leaders.

NEWS RELEASE

Fundraising for the 40th Annual Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show Contact: Anna Hastert, Director of Communications, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, 515-296-2266 The Iowa Beef Industry Council, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, and the Office of the Governor of Iowa launched its fundraising for the Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show (GCSS) on May 23, 2022. In 1983, Gov. Terry Branstad joined forces with the Iowa Beef Industry Council and Iowa Cattlemen’s Association to organize GCSS. “I continue to be amazed by the generosity of Iowans when it comes to supporting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. It’s been 40 years since I teamed up with the Iowa Beef Industry Council and Iowa Cattlemen’s Association to organize the first Governor’s Charity Former Governor Terry Branstad and Steer Show. To know this founder of the Steer Show showing at steer event has raised more than at the show. $4.5 million to support more than 50,000 families in need means so much to me,” said Terry Branstad, former governor of Iowa and U.S. ambassador to China. “Let’s make this Governor’s Charity Steer Show the best yet! Help us meet our fundraising goal of $400,000 for the 40th anniversary. Together we can make a difference.” Last year’s show raised $375,265.92 for the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Iowa, with houses in Des Moines, Iowa City, and Sioux City. Since 1981, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa have served over 50,000 families from all 50 states and 62 foreign countries. Gov. Kim Reynolds carries on the tradition, which supports families of sick children. “As your Governor, I have strived to keep this show moving forward and growing by the year,” Gov. Reynolds said. “We didn’t let COVID-19 or

the derecho slow us down. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and Iowa Beef Industry Council continue to raise the bar, and the cattle producers of Iowa have helped this show become what it is today. Let’s celebrate the accomplishments of the past 40 years, but let’s continue to work forward.” Iowa’s cattle industry plays a big role in the Governor’s Charity Steer Show. Iowa Cattlemen’s Association president Bob Noble offered the following comments: “Iowa cattle producers, from all corners of the state, assist in the implementation of the Governor’s Charity Steer Show. Cattlemen care, and that is made evident by our involvement in organizations throughout our communities,” Noble said. “The highly anticipated Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show displays our dedication to fellow Iowans, especially during their time of need. We hope to raise additional funds for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa, so they may continue to support Iowa families.” The 40th Annual Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 13. Please join us in supporting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa by visiting www.iowagovernorscharitysteershow.com. The Road Ahead for Cattle & Grain Producers by Michael Seek Fox Group at the Board of Trade

Divergence has proven to be the most powerful tool in the livestock business for decades upon decades. This tool simply measures strength or lack thereof in the Fat Cattle versus the Feeder Cattle, or strength in the sale barns without the Cattle markets in Chicago showing identical strength, or strength in USDA Box Beef markets without corresponding strength in the Fat Cattle market overall. This divergence tool is warning of potential danger ahead in the Cattle business since Feeder Board Cattle are not keeping up with the Sale Barns. On the bigger divergence picture Fat Cattle markets have only shown pathetic ‘dead-cat bounces’ when we have seen inflation cause staggering price moves up on Corn and Crude and Diesel have shown. In the last two months the inflation readings have been continuing to show new 40-year highs, yet Cattle markets barely move. The foregoing divergence is waving red flags longer-term for Cattle. Think about it, if your banker or CPA told your livestock operation less than 2 years ago that Crude Oil would go from a negative 32 per barrel to over 120 per barrel and that Corn would go 5.00 per bushel to over 7.00 per bushel you surely would have bet on Cattle markets via Cash Fats going to 160 to 170 cwt. This did not happen and does not look it will happen. Talk to the far north and they will tell you high corn makes high Fats. Talk the south and they will tell you the opposite. The south has always managed to have too many Cattle on the feed-lots and they have gotten away with it, but the next year or two may bring an end to that if indeed the stock market has put in a long-term top that see 401k plans drop another

25% on top of the 20 to 25% already lost. Add recession into this equation , maybe even a depression that would be more likely if the incompressible debt of the United States finally breaks us in two. The foregoing could mean big trouble for the Cattle business in the next twenty-eight months. Corn and Diesel are in powerful bull markets and there really is no reason for this to change. We expect Corn to go right back up and test the 2012 drought year highs of 8.35 and then on up to 9.50 per bushel next year. Now add in Diesel going to 900 per gallon and you have nothing but trouble for over half the cattle ranches south of the Panhandle. Take a look at this Corn chart for good perspective…..

Educate yourself on the risk and then consider execution of the plan once your banker and bookkeeper are on board. The risk of loss on grain and livestock futures and options is not for everyone and being financially suitable is key and the hedge portfolios take a lot of work and monitoring by all parties. If you are not getting the daily ‘312 Market Advisory’ then call Michelle White @ 312-756-0931 here at our Chicago Board of Trade building office to request a 90-day free trial by daily nightly email of the Advisory. Michelle can also arrange private tutorials on hedging here at the Board on Friday evenings or Saturdays if your operation is of size and needs to move sooner than later. Again, talk with us. n

Wow! Summer is winding down and state fair is right around the corner. Time sure does fly. In southern Iowa, it has been a hot and dry summer. All and all we were still blessed with enough moisture for a decent crop so far and a nice set of calves! I’ve been excited to get to state fair and begin seeing some of the many calves that will sell this fall. We have been getting a set of open heifers ready for state fair and the sale this fall and that is something I have deeply enjoyed. The past couple of years we have sold breds only on the sale and open heifers privately but this year we decided to go back to it with the open heifers. We are far from professionals at it but I thought I would share some things I’ve learned over the past couple of years working with these 5-8 month old calves to prepare for show and sale. My parents have always been my heroes. One thing they used to tell me is to watch the successful people and study what they do, but keep in mind that not everything that works on their farm will work on yours. One of the biggest things I believe in while preparing calves is consistency. Be consistent in feeding, weigh out what they eat and be timely on when they eat it. Be consistent on routine with feeding, washing, blowing, and being tied high. The next thing I believe is it doesn’t have to be fancy just functional. I believe this with facilities but also feed. To me the one place the show industry lacks education is feeding. With our operation it has been a lot of trial and error. I’ve found our best results with a simple and well balanced ration without an overload of supplements and once again being consistent with that. I was very guilty when I was younger of thinking everything has to be fancy but the more I’ve learned I kind of abide by the old quote “keep it simple stupid.” I’ve still got a lot to learn and honestly I think even the experts probably still learn everyday but to me there’s nothing better than blowing out heifers as the sun comes up in the morning. I very much so look forward to seeing everyone at state fair and on the road as we begin to travel for fall sale season. This month my hat goes off to everyone spending the early mornings and late nights prepping sale calves! As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me or anyone on our team for help meeting your marketing or purchasing needs! EDITORIAL

Advice for Selecting Your Next Show Heifer or Steer You’ve decided you want to show a steer or heifer, and it is prime time to start the selection and purchase process for your new project. There are magazines nearly two inches thick promoting every show steer open house in the Midwest; and then you start looking at all the online sales. It is easy to become overwhelmed with so many options. However, before you even start looking for that next show prospect, you need to consider three factors and have a plan in place. Jessica Judge, BioZyme® Inc., Marketing Brand Manager, grew up showing cattle across the country and earned the title of High Individual at the 2017 North American International Livestock Exposition Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Contest, representing Oklahoma State University. She offers these considerations: Know your endpoint and end goal. If you are showing a steer, it might be county or state fair you are targeting for. If it is a heifer, it might be a similar show scenario, or you might have different goals for her, different places to show like a breed junior national and breeding goals. Know why you are ultimately purchasing your animal and you will have a better direction on size, age, breed and other specifics to look for. Know your budget. Some people simply have more money than others. An established, realistic budget will help you decide where you can go and determine what type of animal you can buy. Know the breeder/seller. Who have you formed a good relationship with? Who will help with feeding/prep advice after the sale? Be sure you have a solid relationship built on trust with the person you would like to do business with. Once you have established the above criteria, you can start thinking about selection criteria for your animal. Regardless if you are looking to buy a steer or a heifer, the primary evaluation tool should be skeletal correctness or structure. “At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how heavily muscled they are or how attractive they are, if they can’t walk, it’s a wash. Structure is the most important characteristic to evaluate and select for,” Judge said. Structural soundness should be evaluated from the ground up. First look at the animal’s foot size. Does the animal have a little, tiny foot on a small amount of bone? Or does it set down on a big, square foot and adequate bone? You want an animal that stands on a nice square foot, with a good set to its pastern and plenty of flexibility, which is why it is always important to watch them walk. Moving up the skeleton, you want to make sure that the animal has a good set to its shoulder angle and knee; there should be a 45-degree angle to its shoulder and the knee should have the proper curvature of a banana or crescent shape. Make sure the steer or heifer can get out and move with plenty of flexibility to its hip and hind leg. Finally, make sure the animal has natural, smooth joints as big joints indicate potential structural concerns which can lessen the long-term future and value of the animal. Once you have evaluated structure, Judge offers specific traits a person should look for when selecting both steer and heifers.

32

Livestock Plus Inc.

Heifer Highlights Judge said that when selecting a show heifer prospect, that after structure, you want to make sure the heifer has a productive and maternal look. This entails having a good rib shape, curvature to her rib design, softness to her overall skeleton and power. The heifer needs to have long-tying muscle shape and dimension, and not be just one-dimensional or flat. The next selection criteria for a show heifer is balance and eye appeal – you want her to look like a lady. “She should have a feminine shape to her head and neck and be clean through her throat. When selecting a female as a calf be sure to pay attention to her freshness and condition. She doesn’t need to be the bloomiest in terms of condition as a calf. You should look for a female who is genuine in her condition, but still shows potential for dimension and fleshing ability as she grows,” Judge said. Other factors to consider on heifers include breed and age. Breed is truly a personal preference, as is age. Some ages will only be able to show at a national show or state fair once in a show season or calendar year, depending on the rules. Steer Strategies When evaluating potential show steer prospects, after structure, you will want to look at muscle shape. You don’t need to pick out the heaviest muscled, stoutest calf, but you do need to select one with indicators for future muscle development. “Look for width of chest, some clearance or width at the ground, added body and rib shape, and a genuine shape or turn at the top side of his skeleton. These are good indicators that as he grows and develops, he will continue to have some muscle as he reaches his desired endpoint,” she said. In addition to structure and muscle shape, you want a steer that is balanced and eye appealing. He doesn’t need to be the “coolest or freakiest fronted,” according to Judge, but he does need to have parts that are put together in a proportional package that give him a balanced, fat steer look. Study the Past, Eyes on the Present Judge recommends asking about the past performance of siblings and half siblings of the calves you are looking at buying, which goes back to having a good relationship with the seller. Find out how other calves from specific sires and cows have performed. Did they eat well and grow efficiently? Or were they hard keepers? If they took a while to gain, they might not be the right calf for your earlier endpoint. On the flip side, if they grow quickly and are earlier maturing, you may have to pump the breaks on your feeding strategy. And although many people post photos and videos of their sales online, Judge recommends always studying the cattle in person. If you can’t get to a specific location in person, be sure that someone you trust looks at the cattle in person before you make a big investment in your project animal. “If you see a calf you like, find someone you trust go see the animal in person. A lot of small details can be missed on videos, like foot size and joint shape. When you have steers that need to get to heavy weight or you are looking for a breeding female to bring value to your herd, those details can make all the difference,” Judge said. You’ve established a budget; an endpoint and you’ve created relationships with reputable breeders. Now it is time to go select your next show heifer or steer project. With simple selection criteria, you can evaluate the groups of calves available for sale this fall and find your next champion. IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

ICA announces 2022 Carcass Challenge results Founded in 2010, ICA’s Carcass Challenge was created to showcase beef cattle genetics, feedyard management, and modern technology. Iowa’s only statewide fed-beef competition seeks to highlight continuous improvements within the cattle industry and provide cattlemen with a measurement of maximum cattle efficiency, carcass value, and net revenue of each steer. In November, 73 steers averaging 770 pounds were delivered to Sieren Beef, located near Harper, Iowa. Mitch Sieren, of Sieren Beef, fed out the group. At time of harvest, the group averaged 1,344 pounds after 191-days on feed. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association recognized the top 10% of steers based on the Retail Value of Days on Feed (RVDoF), which highlights the profitability of a carcass. Carcass Challenge donors and participants were recognized on June 1 at the Carcass

Challenge Banquet. Tanner Lawton, ICA director of field services, provided the following remarks: “This program showcases cattle in Iowa. It also teaches us what our livestock are doing, and how they are changing, adapting and growing. The data you are going to see talks about the cattle we are raising and the quality of (cattle) we have.” This year’s champion steer had an RVDoF of $7.43. Steer 43 was donated by Lubben White Oak Farms and Devenish Nutrition, and bred by Dave Lubben. Our second place steer had an RVDoF of $7.31. Steer 61 was donated by Sterling Cattle Co. and bred by Allan Johnson. The third place steer, with a RVDoF of $7.17, was steer 73. Steer 73 was donated by Manco Farms and Animat, and bred by Manco Farms. Steer 15 landed in fourth place with a RVDoF of $6.87. The fourth place steer was donated by Community Bank and Trust, Cole Greiman, and Ross Land & Cattle, and bred by Doug Schroeder. In fifth place, steer 55 had a RVDoF of $6.70. Bruhn Cattle salutes the farmers and ranchers that feed the USA and the world!

Eat Beef.

And on the 8th day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, “I need a caretaker.” So God made a farmer. God said, “I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, milk cows, work all day in the fields, milk cows again, eat supper and then go to town and stay past midnight at a meeting of the school board.” So God made a farmer. “I need somebody with arms strong enough to rustle a calf and yet gentle enough to deliver his own grandchild. Somebody to call hogs, tame cantankerous machinery, come home hungry, have to wait lunch until his wife’s done feeding visiting ladies and tell the ladies to be sure and come back real soon -- and mean it.” So God made a farmer.

God said, “I need somebody willing to sit up all night with a newborn colt. And watch it die. Then dry his eyes and say, ‘Maybe next year.’ I need somebody who can shape an ax handle from a persimmon sprout, shoe a horse with a hunk of car tire, who can make harness out of haywire, feed sacks and shoe scraps. And who, planting time and harvest season, will finish his forty-hour week by Tuesday noon, then, pain’n from ‘tractor back,’ put in another seventy-two hours.” So God made a farmer. God had to have somebody willing to ride the ruts at double speed to get the hay in ahead of the rain clouds and yet stop in mid-field and race to help when he sees the first smoke from a neighbor’s place. So God made a farmer. God said, “I need somebody strong enough to clear trees and heave bails, yet gentle enough to tame lambs and wean pigs and tend the pink-combed pullets, who will stop his mower for an hour to splint the broken leg of a meadow lark. It had to be somebody who’d plow deep and straight and not cut corners. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed and rake and disc and plow and plant and tie the fleece and strain the milk and replenish the self-feeder and finish a hard week’s work with a five-mile drive to church. “Somebody who’d bale a family together with the soft strong bonds of sharing, who would laugh and then sigh, and then reply, with smiling eyes, when his son says he wants to spend his life ‘doing what dad does.’” So God made a farmer. -Paul Harvey

A Different Market

We are in a different type of market than we were in the past and we don’t foresee things going back! The loaded question we get asked a lot these days is, “How are the buyers of this high-dollar land penciling it out?” We wish we had all the answers to this question, but a lot of the time the answer is this. The buyers are utilizing their equity whether it is in paid-off farmland or other entities to cash flow these additional acres. An opinion we hear often is that many people don’t think it is right to be buying farms at the high prices we are seeing, but it is becoming the new normal, and operators that have adapted to this ever-changing environment are doing well. Whether that is right or not, that is what we are seeing. This last week we went to Montana and then onto Idaho to spend time with some friends and help them with their ranch. Although they raise a variety of different crops and have different livestock practices than we do in Iowa the change is happening everywhere. They are seeing the same increase in land values out west as we are in Iowa. Just like the weeds in our fields adapt and become resilient, we too need to stay fluid, be ever ready to adapt to change, and keep our eyes open for cautious indicators as well as opportunities. That is how we can withstand this market and agricultural environment over time.

Iowa Land Guy Call today to see what your farm is worth and get a free land valuation! 515-460-8585

We continue to see increased acres hitting the market and prices continue to climb. Just last month we saw multiple new record prices in multiple counties. Last year in June, Iowa moved 8,000 acres, and this year in June, Iowa sold 18,000 acres. Even though we have brought more ground to the market we have seen many people wanting hard assets. This has made for a continued steady rise in the farmland market. • If you’re holding out to buy when you assume the market will crash. Don’t! • Don’t wait to buy land… Buy land and wait! • Since 1991, the average return on farmland is 11% as a long-term investment.

COMMENTARY

Lefty’s Logic by Eric Lee

It was fall of 2016 and I was managing Bar QH Simmentals. John Sandidge, the owner, came back to the farm after having been at the sale barn selling our feeder steers. He informed me that Jim and Jake Bloomberg were also at the barn and that they had a bull we just had to go look at. Later that week, we loaded up and headed to Berwick to check out JBSF Road Trip for the first time. He was exactly what we expected, just as Jim described him, maybe even a little better as Jim was not one to embellish. I knew right then that we needed this bull. So, John and I bought him with Bloombergs and Fankenreider retaining a piece of him. Jim and Shannon had planned on taking him to Denver for display so they extended an invitation

to us also. This had always been a dream of mine, to have a promo bull in the yard. Jim made that dream come true for me. With the transformation of the yards these last few years this seemed increasingly special as it was on the bricks in the old yards. I did not realize just how special those four days truly were. To be able to stand there in one of my favorite places in the world with one of the most iconic men in the Simmental breed was such an amazing experience. I really thought I knew a lot of people until I stood in the bull stall all day with Jim. I am pretty sure I met everyone that was at the National Western in a couple day span. To know Jim was to like him and as busy of a man as he was, he always had the time to shake your hand and ask how you were doing. When I think of Jim Bloomberg, a few words come to mind; integrity, honesty, sincerity, and humble. Please keep Mary and the Bloomberg family in your thoughts and prayers as they mourn the loss of this legendary cattlemen but even more husband father grandfather and friend. I hope summer is treating everyone well! Every summer seems to fly by faster and faster, or maybe my kids are just involved in so many things, it just feels like a whirlwind! I’m trying to soak up all the little moments when there is no arguing, but they seem to be pretty small moments some days! Our family picture this month is from the Iowa State Fair Corndog Kickoff! Such a fun event and the boys and Taylor said they were stuffed from all the State Fair Food on the way home… WIN! Our oldest, Tucker, has been very involved in the SOFA (Speak Out For Agriculture) Trip, Animal Science Roundup/4-H State Conference and so many District and Chapter FFA meetings. It never fails that Tucker and Matt are gone at the same time, leaving the girls and I handling all the chores and not burning the place down! Our middle T, Taylor, has been hitting weights with big brother and basketball and volleyball camps. Tay also has more 4-H projects to work on, however, she is not super at getting the write-ups done, giving mom additional grey hair! Taylor will be in 8th grade at St. Malachy this fall. I am not ready for her to be done with junior high, and I am fairly confident big brother is not ready for her to be joining him in high school! Our youngest, Treva, underwent a much needed tonsillectomy that also required an overnight stay for observation. It never fails that these things always fall during county fair judging and prep days. So I left Matt with Treva in Des Moines and headed home to support Taylor during her judging of a couple clothing projects and table setting, then running back to the hospital to be with Treva so Matt could get chores done. After juggling and making sure we had everyone covered, Treva still feels she should get to have both mom and dad every time she goes to bed now or even takes a dose of Tylenol, because someone HAS to hold her hand while she takes it. We may have created a diva! I am so excited to announce that our 4-H Club along with my friend, Lori Christensen, and her club the Jefferson Pioneers, created a new livestock show called Show Stock Buddies. It will be held at the Adair County Fair. We will be inviting ten kids with intellectual and developmental disabilities to have the opportunity to show a pig, goat or sheep. Each Buddy will be paired with two 4-H kids to experience an opportunity to show livestock by getting to wash them and learn more about their species from their mentors. Showing livestock is something, I believe, every single person should get to experience if they have any interest at all! I hope the mentors take the time to truly get to know and help each Buddy have the best 4-H experience possible! As most of you know, this is something that is so
