MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com
Greetings, As I write this, I’m enjoying the one-inch rain we got yesterday. I’m going out on a limb here, but we needed it really, really, bad. Since mid June we had only had .07 inch of rain. Hopefully the rest of the world will cover our feed supply. I had a great time at the All Iowa Show Down. What an idea! Whoever came up with this should be commended. Near as I can tell, out of 59 county champions, of 4 different species, in both breeding and market, sorted out of 6 regional shows, left a total of 6 head per class of the best livestock Iowa has to offer in one ring. As the judge said, “I couldn’t be wrong, they are all great, just got to get down to nit-picking and personal preference.” As far as I can see, the only problem is we need a 99 county involvement. The other nice thing is there was standing room only. The show was so professionally put together with a excitement level second to none. Brad Hook did a great job as master of ceremonies. It was almost like you were at the opening kick off of a college football game. Music was blaring as he announced each person and their accomplishment’s as they entered the ring. What great
job by all, including all the regional shows committees. It got me pumped up for 2018! I’m just guessing here, but if you want to get behind this effort, get in touch with me and I will get you to the correct people or one of the regional show managers. We will make this thing bigger and better!! Our youth are our future! After all that excitement, ol’ Mike needed food. After asking one of the locals, it was pretty clear that The Iron Horse Neighborhood Grill was the place to go. Ross and Sandy and I proceeded to The Iron horse. It must be the right place, Brad Hook and his son, Chris & Carolyn Wilson and their group and several of the exhibitors where there. As of late I have kinda veered off my usual rib eye, and started on filets. So, for this meal is was filet. I guess I like the tender and smaller cut of a filet. I think I had the correct choice when the evening was over, it was pretty darn good, tender, and seasoned just enough to be perfect. I was wishing there would have been a little more of it after I was three fourths done. Great job Iron Horse Neighborhood Grill. Just for the record the adult beverage was also pretty right, great way to end the day. Iron Horse Neighborhood Grill when in Osceola is a must stop! Thanks Ross and Sandy for the adult supervision I’m thinkin’ summer is gondi. We hope you all had a great summer, county fair, state fair, junior nationals and so on and so on. Sale season is upon us. Good luck in finding that next great one. If we can be of any help please call on any of our staff. As always, please keep our military and their families past present and future in you thoughts and prayers. Our freedom depends on them. God Bless P. S. Special thank you to Ross, Sandy, Doug, and Kari for the invite at the Iowa State Fair. They always come up with the best meal at the Iowa Sate Fair. Dixie and I enjoyed. Ask me about this one, its special!!

When Life Doesn’t Feel Fair by Stephanie Formo This summer, my 9 year old son earned first place in showmanship at our county fair. This is remarkable if you know my son because he does not come by this naturally. He has a hard time with competition, and to be honest, his very spirit seems to rebel against the idea of hard work. This win did not come easy for him. He has worked for two and a half years learning what showmanship is all about. He has lost, and I mean REALLY lost, many showmanship classes. He has been in tears after a show. He has yelled at us when we offer advice. He has attended workshops. He has watched youtube videos. He has spent his summer mornings out in the show barn while other kids his age are watching cartoons. And after he won, a fellow 4H leader made the comment to me that “It isn’t really fair when kids who show in all of these other sheep shows around the country come to these county fairs and win, when the other kids are just learning.” I didn’t reply in that moment, not out of a desire to be kind, but

because I was truly too stunned to know what to say! When we talk about being fair, I think we really mean that it feels as though justice is not being done. When we work hard, we all want to be rewarded. When we follow the rules, and do our best, it should be enough. When we put in the effort, we want to win the trophy. And when we don’t, life doesn’t feel fair. But that is not what Justice is. Justice at its core is rooted in God’s own character. Where we fall in line with God and His Will, there is justice. Winning or losing has nothing to do with justice in and of itself. Now when someone harms an animal in order to win a show, there is injustice. If someone hurts another competitor to win, that is injustice. If there is a bribe involved, that is injustice. Working harder than others is not being unfair. Being better than someone at something, is not being unfair. Not being rewarded with a trophy just because you have worked hard is not unfair. When my kids say something isn’t fair, they absolutely do not mean that there has been a perversion of justice. They actually mean that life didn’t hand them what they felt like they deserved. It’s so easy to see it when it’s your own child. But it’s harder when it’s us. When it’s our spirit crying out about justice. But honestly. In my heart, I know that When I say something isn’t fair, most often what I mean is that we are not getting what we feel we deserve. I constantly struggle with my own competitive, fallen nature, and trying to teach my kids righteousness, justice, and grace. I want to live out my values in the midst of everything we do, and showing livestock is no exception. And to be completely honest, there have been times when I have sat and watched people win and I have thought to myself “that doesn’t seem fair!” And maybe sometimes justice isn’t being done, but I would guess that most often it’s actually my entitlement of wanting to see justice done in my own way. I don’t have this child raising thing all figured out yet, but I am certain that I do not want to pass on to my kids a legacy of a life lived with a constant feeling of entitlement. Sometimes we work hard, and we win. And sometimes we work hard, and we lose. That is no more than we deserve. And it most certainly is fair. n

COMMENTARY
The Road Ahead for Cattle and Hogs by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade
A month ago we shared with you that many livestock operatorproducers were showing concern that the best days of the year were behind us for cash Cattle and Hog prices. And while Cattle and Hog prices have pulled back from this write a month ago it is important to keep an eye on the big picture. The Fat Cattle for October are still up 6% on the year and the October Hogs are up 2%. Export data for both our U.S. beef and pork are showing tremendous strength and you have to believe that the U.S. Dollar’s sharp trend down
44
Livestock Plus Inc.
will continue since our economic data is not keeping up with the strength of China or Europe and thus the Federal Reserve might just be done raising rates. Indeed, the Federal Reserve released their minutes from this last Fed meeting and the result was a sell off on the U.S. Dollar. The Mexican Peso and Japanese Yen have turned up and their inflation rates have too and as long as these two buyers of our United States meat exports keeping buying then livestock operators should not be afraid of finishing them. By the time Labor Day arrives we should have a more clear picture of the trade negotiations that President Trump and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross are working so hard on to benefit livestock operators here in the United States by getting the playing field level. The price of sundry feed markets have had solid corrections and when you consider that our own Federal Reserve is still desirous of higher inflation rates and you factor in the sharp correction in prices of many key metals, e.g. Zinc, Gold and Iron ore, and also factor in the likelihood of lower yields on Corn this year and the falling U.S. Dollar then you may want to consider some new forward contracting to lock in your needs for the future. The one concern we do have about business in general is that it is believed that the powerfully rally of the U.S. stock market since the election already reflects on a tax adjusted basis the ‘good news’ of the hoped for tax reform and less regulation put forth by Mr. Trump’s administration. This ‘baked in the cake’ ‘reflection’ possibility combined with Home Depot stock [selling off after releasing very strong financial results] might be warning us all of consumers who are tightening up. Default levels of auto loan and other personal debt are showing some stress levels trying to give way. Bottom line? Folks have to eat and our United States always finds a way to celebrate with Beef or Pork and not just rice and pasta. Headwinds will continue to buffet us on geopolitical fronts as our country is not very popular even in other countries where we pay the bill to protect them, so be ready for downdrafts, however, also be ready to take advantage of undervalued situations at the sale barns. A gentleman named ‘Buffett’ has shown us all over many years and decades that you want to buy low and sell high, not the other way around. The future still looks bright for Cattle and Hog producers and a few fiscal quarters from now should reveal that this current level of pricing on livestock was indeed a buying opportunity. If you are a bona-fide livestock producer and would like to receive on a complimentary basis for 45 days my daily and weekend ‘Livestock Report’ that includes Fat and Feeder Cattle Valuations, and Lean Hog valuations, as well as Beef and Pork cutout valuations from my office here at Fox Group [clearing through RJ Obrien] here at the Chicago Board of Trade then please call Ms. Michelle White at 312.756.0931 and let her know. And remember, hedging livestock with Chicago Board Cattle or Hog futures or the purchase and sale of grain, energy or financial future or option contracts still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt, or any other holdings they might have. Always consult with your most trusted advisors before taking on risk, whether the intent is hedging or not. n

Thank you, Evan! It is with very mixed emotions that I write this. As most of you know, Evan Rayl has been one of my best and most loyal supporters from the very beginning of Livestock Plus, Inc. When we first started and through 22 years, Evan was one of my go to guys for almost everything, from legal, to expert advice. The nice thing about Evan is that you could trust his response, you may not like it, but he was usually correct. Well to my dismay Evan, has expressed his desire to put his computer and writing skills for Livestock Plus away. The Livestock Plus Inc. staff and friends will miss you and want to wish you well. Evan and Shirley have a good time in all your adventures. Thanks Evan, a whole bunch for “A Little Bit” ` Mike Sorensen COMMENTARY
Why Would My Cows Be Open by Travis Meteer Beef Extension Educator, University of Illinois
Open cows are simply a fact of the cattle business. Managing to achieve a 100% pregnancy rate is simply not cost effective, nor should it be your goal. Having a few open cows every year implies some selection pressure is being put on fertility and animals best-fit for your environment. However, if the number of open cows is excessive (greater than 5%), evaluation of management, nutrition and herd health needs to take place. Research illustrates a strong link between body condition score (BCS) of cows and their ability to breed back. Numerous studies (Selk et. Al., 1988; Pruit & Momont, 1990; Houghton et al., 1990) have shown that BCS plays a role in subsequent pregnancy rates. Cows in better condition (BCS >5) have a greater probability of breeding early and a greater chance at becoming pregnant and staying pregnant. Thin cows at calving generally do not breed up well. Remember back to calving… were cows thin? This may be the cause of poorer preg-check results and signal to you to increase nutrition ensuring better cow BCS. Nutritional plane or the weight gain pattern of females may also be the culprit. Cattle losing weight often do not get pregnant or stay pregnant. Dairy cattle have battled negative energy balance and the subsequent effects on conception rate for years. It makes sense… if your cattle cannot support weight gain or maintenance then why should they support pregnancy? Thus, if cattle were losing weight
50
Livestock Plus Inc.
at time of breeding, then likely they would not conceive in high percentages. Research conducted here at the Orr Research Center looked into the effect of supplementing lush, spring pastures. The wet, high protein grass may cause nutritional challenges to high producing beef cows. Our research showed a numerical benefit of a 4 lb./hd/d supplement on AI conception rates. In summary, preparing cattle to gain weight, or certainly not lose it, during breeding season could benefit your preg rates. Many producers are forced to haul cows to different pastures. Transporting cows can result in stress that can affect conception. The rule is do not to haul cows 4 to 45 days after breeding. This coincides with embryo implantation, a sensitive time when trying to get a cow pregnant. That leaves a couple options. Many cattlemen have gone to timed AI and haul cows to pasture within 3-4 days of breeding. Others may breed and graze pastures for some time before hauling a group to another pasture. Be aware transportation stress may play a role in conception and pregnancy rates. Drought and higher feed costs have enticed producers to feed some questionable feeds at times. Feeds containing mycotoxins such as aflatoxin, fusarium, zeralenone, etc. can be responsible for abortion of a cow if levels are too high. Testing high risk feeds is a must. Eliminating the feed from the ration or addition of a toxin binder may be necessary. Water is another possible source of contamination to animal nutrition. Excess minerals may be causing mineral interactions. Also, elevated nitrate levels could be present and hurting the ability of cows to hold a pregnancy. Compromised herd health is many times worthy of investigation. Your veterinarian will have the best ability to diagnose herd health issues. Visual appraisal as well as blood work is usually needed to determine what disease may be causing failure of cattle to breed and hold a pregnancy. Some common diseases that can result in abortion or failed breeding are Anaplasmosis, Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD), Leptospirosis, Leukosis, and Neospora. Consult your veterinarian for more information on the possibility of these diseases being the culprit of a poor preg-check. Bred cows are still valuable property. Opportunity remains to pull in a profit if costs are controlled and pregnancy rates are good. Maintaining proper health and nutrition that leads to desired pregnancy results is a must for cattlemen looking to stay competitive in this market. n

HORMONES
The focus of this paper is the endocrine system’s role in reproduction. Biologically each species’ main goal is to reproduce and continue the line. Without hormones this process would simply not exist and species would cease to exist. The control center for the endocrine system is the hypothalamus located at the base of the brain. This is what ties the endocrine system to the nervous system. The nervous system sends the signal (impulse) through the hypothalamus down the short connective stalk to the pituitary gland. There the sex hormones are produced which activate male testicles to release testosterone or female
Livestock production continuation relies upon efficient reproduction. Most bodily functions are controlled by the endocrine system which uses chemicals and hormones (chemical messengers) that are released into the bloodstream from glands. Hormones control functions such as water retention, growth, metabolism, weight and reproductive functions. Over 20 main hormones are released and the major glands are the pituitary gland, hypothalamus, reproductive glands, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and pineal gland.

HORMONES that produce hormones. When there is a trace mineral deficiency so are the hormones needed for the animal to maintain its pregnancy and for the embryo to reach full term. Sperm production and function is often associated with zinc. A deficiency of this mineral has been linked to impaired RNA and DNA production, decreased testosterone production and poor sperm motility. By increasing prostaglandin receptor binding, copper facilitates prostaglandin action. Copper is a major component of lysyloxidase which is needed for the extracellular matrix that gives the cell shape and stability. This is even more important during the growth process.
ovaries to produce estrogen or progesterone. After calving, udder blood flow increases. Potassium plays a key role in high milk producing cow reproduction. Milk has a potassium concentration of 0.15% (higher than any other mineral) meaning the potassium supply must be sufficient for both reproduction and lactation. Potassium also stimulates the production of estrogen in the ovaries. Magnesium, copper and zinc also influence estrogen production. The progesterone producer is corpus luteum, it relies on magnesium and manganese. The FollicleStimulating Hormone (FSH) which is produced in the anterior pituitary gland stimulates development and maturation of the follicle in a cow’s ovary and
Results of feeding Amino Acid Chelated minerals on reproductive performance and calf weaning weight.
Another role of trace minerals is to reduce oxidative stress caused by the free radical byproduct from the oxygen utilization process. If the free radicals are not detoxified the cells could become damaged or even die. The detoxifying agents needed are: Manganese and zinc/copper, superoxide dismutase, catalase (iron dependent) and glutathione peroxidase (selenium dependent). This means the correct mineral levels are required for not only health of the animal but also that of the embryo.
Ovarian activity of heifers fed Amino Acid Chelated minerals vs. heifers fed inorganic minerals.
it also relies on leutinizing Hormone (LH) which induces ovulation or the bursting of the follicle that produces corpus luteum. FSH and LH production is dependent on the minerals: calcium, copper and zinc. Many mineral deficiencies resulting in reproduction problems may lead to embryonic death. Often trace minerals are components of enzymes

COMMENTARY
kids, who spend that extra minute in the barn, WILL succeed in life. As an industry and even larger, as a country, we need people with the “leave it all on the floor” and “I will not be the limiting factor in my own success” attitudes leading us into the future. There are some people in this great country we live in, that don’t appreciate the values and lessons that come from competition. They believe that everyone that participates should receive the same amount of success. But what does that teach our young people? Our kids need to learn the value of hard work and principles that come with defeat. Sure, we all have vivid memories of that time we won, but I would bet that most of you would agree that those times when we didn’t do so well, (and looking back I seem to have so many of those!) were the times that really molded us into the people we are today. My hat is off to you kids that are out in the barn, day in and day out, constantly working to make your livestock better. You are an encouragement to so many. No matter where you end up in life, I hope you find the application of the lessons you have learned from showing livestock to the bigger picture. With summer coming to a close, that means a couple things… football and sale season! You are probably in full-blown “working sale calves” mode and/or preparing for harvest… we all know how stressful that can be. As we enter yet another busy season for our industry, I challenge you to take a minute and step out of the high paced lifestyle to be thankful for everything we have been given! I look forward to seeing you all at a sale very soon. If I can be of any assistance in helping you market your livestock, please don’t hesitate to give me a call. God Bless, Cody

As most of the state fairs are winding down, I hope you all had a successful summer show season! It seems like each year these shows at every level are becoming more and more competitive. You breeders deserve a lot of credit for working to produce the highest quality livestock possible, your progress is evident in the show ring. With that, I am also hoping some of the heightened competition is due to the young people spending time in the barn every day feeding, rinsing, and going that extra mile to make sure their animal reaches its fullest potential. The time spent in the barn fuels a passion for the competition of the show and an intense desire to win. Now, can we guarantee that extra time in the barn, means leaving with the banners? Not necessarily. But I can guarantee one thing – when these kids do get beat, they will go home and work even harder and will figure out what they need to do to have the edge the next time. I would venture to bet, this kind of attitude and desire within these young people doesn’t just apply to exhibiting livestock. They will figure out what it takes to overcome the obstacles in a college class that they struggle with or to win a game as the “underdog.” These young people grow up into employees that never give up and don’t just achieve deadlines and goals but achieve them ahead of schedule and above everyone’s expectations. As I write this, I am sitting in the pen next to my son and daughter. They are spending time with two of the five market hogs they showed in the Hawkeye Open Market Show on the last day of the Iowa State Fair. My heart is aching for how Tucker and Taylor just want each pig to know how much they love them. I can’t help but walk around with tears in my eyes, but only because I’m beyond proud of the all the livestock kids giving these market animals a great life, and knowing they are part of feeding our country. My mom asked why I do this to myself. The kids have decided they would rather give a barrow an extraordinary life of love and marshmallows with the opportunity to be shown at a fair. Sometimes, I feel like the passion and loyalty that I’m so proud to see in my kids, are also the qualities that make it hurt beyond words when they have to walk their market animals to the truck. So, to all the parents, grandparents, and friends out there that hurt with your kiddos, just know the contribution these kids are making for our agricultural industry goes far beyond the heartache. We need to applaud their hard work and dedication as ag advocates and the futures of our industries. I want to send out a big thank you to ALL our family AND our livestock family that came up and took Treva so this momma can run up to the ring or help the Big Ts when they show! It makes me tear up so much knowing all of you that love Miss Treva and help us to raise her loving this livestock industry as much as we all do! It really makes our hearts so full to know our little girl is loved. As always we made several trips to the Cattlemen’s Beef Quarters at the Iowa State Fair. My favorites are the Bacon Blue Burger and the Hot Beef Sundae. I tell ya, the coupons they share on Facebook are awesome, so if you haven’t already done it, “like” their Facebook page and you will get awesome coupons for each day of the fair! If you see Blake VanderMolen around, maybe ask him about the coupons and the prime rib dinner for two, pretty sure he is still kicking himself!!! Please travel safe to all the upcoming sales!! Also, remember to keep our military and our nation in your prayers.
