Greetings, So long summer and hello fall sale season. I’m starting my 25th year in this business, and every year I look more forward to it. The old story of ‘if you enjoy what you do it isn’t work.’

That is a fact!!

I have been hearing about this eating place over and over lately and since I really didn’t have anything special to write about this month, Dixie and I were off to the Primrose in Corning, Iowa.

If you are thinking of trying this place, and I highly recommend you do, and if you are going to look for a big sign upon arrival, give it up. I pulled in where GPS told me to and still didn’t see it. All that I could see was a law office and a Subway. So, I called for directions and they told me, very reluctantly, the first place north of Subway. I suppose they didn’t want to use another restaurant name out of respect. I was one door south of Subway.

Just a helpful hint!! The sign is in the window and hard to see from the road. I, being a computer wiz that I am (not so much), looked this place up before we left home, and the only negative comment I saw was slow service. So, I worked hard to prepare myself because I don’t wait very good. I have a formula on how to tell if they are slow. Order an adult beverage first, if you have to order the second one while waiting its slow service, and if the second one is gone before food gets there that’s really slow.

Primrose made it just fine, I didn’t have to order a second drink until the meal was gone.

The owners Jill and Joel Mahr were big city people (Omaha), and decided to be small town Main Street people with a food establishment that utilizes locally grown meat and veggies in their renovated main street building, and may I add, a very nicely renovated building. Bryce our waiter, a young man that knew the menu and how to explain it to a couple country folks, and if he didn’t know, he found out and reported back in.

On to the ordering, first was the adult beverage (remember the

formula from above) and it’s hard to teach an old dog a new trick so I had my usual brother Jack Daniels with a hint of 7-Up but Dixie had a Cherry Frizzen. The Cherry Frizzen was made from cherries from a local cherry tree, and that off the tree thing just impresses me, utilizing local foods.

So, on to the meal. I asked, “if I ordered a ribeye, can u tell me where it came from?” With very little hesitation, Bryce told me the ribeye came from a Nebraska ranch, and he recited the name, but I didn’t write it down, and he could tell me within a few miles of where it was born, raised, and fed.

So, I was thinking I was going to stump him and asked where do the potato’s and corn come from? They both were locally grown. I think if I got my story straight, Jill’s folks raise a lot of the produce.

Before I got my ribeye, I noticed that there was no seasoning on the table, no salt, pepper, or steak sauce. Guess what, that ribeye, potatoes, and corn relish absolutely did not need to be seasoned. It was perfectly seasoned. Speaking of the corn relish, Ol’ Mike does not like stuff mixed up. Corn is corn, relish is relish, peppers and onion is separate food, and that’s the way I like them. These folks may have converted me. The corn stuff was deadly.

Potatoes; I’m not sure how they do it, but it’s like they take a whole potato, peel it, and somehow smash it three quarters of an inch thick, then season it, and deep fat fry it, unbelievable good.

Dessert; if a guy is going to try a place you have to be complete and order dessert. The cherry cheesecake made with cherries from the tree was our choice. It was a small

Cattle Krush: Free to ICA Members The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) and Performance Livestock Analytics (PLA) have partnered to bring Iowa’s cattle producers the Cattle Krush service for free.

Cattle Krush, one of the software programs created by the award-winning PLA team, helps cattle producers predict and capture profit opportunities.

Beef producers’ profit is determined by the price of feeder calves, the cost of gain, and the price received for the fed cattle. But those three prices are changing minute by minute in today’s fast-paced world. PLA’s Cattle Krush integrates all of the data and puts it in the palm of your hand.

Producers can use Cattle Krush at the auction house when buying calves, and the app will calculate the profitability of the lot, based on the auction price, grain prices, and cattle futures markets. Then, once calves

are purchased, cattle producers can use the “My Lots” feature. The app alerts users when profit opportunities appear, at which point the cattle feeder can contact their broker to lock in the profit.

PLA’s CEO Dane Kuper explains, “Our Cattle Krush App puts the key data already custom analyzed to the farmer’s unique situation into an easy to understand format on a 4G high-speed smartphone or tablet. It’s in the farmer’s hand whether he or she’s in the pickup, at the sale barn, or in the field.

A desktop computer sitting in the farm office just isn’t convenient or timely enough. To succeed today, it has to be my farm’s data and current prices in my local markets. Our pop-up alerts help farmers pull the trigger before the target disappears.”

Cattle Krush, a $75/month value, is now available to Iowa Cattlemen’s Association

members for free. “Our mission is to grow Iowa’s beef business through advocacy, leadership and education,” says ICA CEO Matt Deppe. “Our producers have told us, through surveys and listening sessions, that they want more information about cattle prices, marketing and profitability. Cattle Krush is going to fill that need and help our independent Iowa cattle producers improve their operations and profits.”

Cattlemen Host Political Officials at Iowa State Fair Iowa cattle producers welcomed state and federal officials at the Iowa State Fair in August. Members and staff were on hand to visit with Governor Reynolds and Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig and Deputy Secretary Julie Kenney, as well as congressional representatives including Senator Joni Ernst, Congressman David Young, and Congressman Dave Loebsack.

In addition to offering a tour of the beef barn, cattlemen took the opportunity to talk about important policy issues developed through ICA’s grassroots process, including the following: Trade & Market Access

• Cattlemen and women support open markets and science-based trade. Beef exports account for around $300 a head for U.S. producers.

• NAFTA renegotiation is a top priority.

• Concern with impacts of trade dispute with China; the devastating effect on the pork industry will hurt beef, too.

Iowa State Students’ 6th Annual Bacon Expo AMES, IA – Iowa State students will be hosting the 6th annual Bacon Expo on October 6th from 11 am to 2 pm at the Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center, south of Iowa State’s campus, General Tri-Chair Gracie Russell says, “For the 2018 Bacon Expo, the executive team has chosen to select the theme “Bacon at the Big Top”. With this, we will have a day of fun filled carnival themed activities from education to live entertainment.

Bacon Expo is a family-friendly event that drew over 1000 guests last year all united for one common cause: bacon. Attendees have the opportunity to sample innovative bacon treats such as bacon gelato, chocolate covered bacon, and maple bacon cupcakes or to simply satisfy their urge for traditional style bacon. In addition, you may be able to participate in the bacon eating contest or event learn more about Iowa’s Pork industry.

Iowa State’s Bacon Expo included a philanthropic effort as well.

All leftover bacon will be donated to Food at First in Ames. In addition, along with this year’s theme the executive team has decided to donate all of our proceeds to the Special Olympics Iowa.

make the difference between profit and loss on a beef operation for a given year. This document provides guidance to both parties involved so successful, long term contracts can be developed for grazing purposes.

Types of agreements Pasture rent only This is the simplest and most conventional agreement. Typically, pasture rent agreements are designed to establish either a price per acre or a monthly or daily rate based on number of grazing units. Although simple in nature, there are specific items that should be part of this type of agreement: establishing which party is responsible for which inputs such as fertilizer and fence repair, and deciding who will determine when cattle need to be removed because grass has become too short. And don’t forget to include often overlooked yet still important items such as water access, length of grazing season, etc.

The more inputs and labor the grazier is willing to assume, the lower the rental rate should be, and vice versa.

Resource sharing Because capital investment expenses are cost prohibitive for many young and up-start farmers, there is a renewed interest by many of these producers in trading “sweat equity” for capital access. Cow-calf share agreements offer incentives for both land and cattle owners to partner with young producers without assuming all the risk. An effective cow-calf share agreement identifies and itemizes what the cow owner, landowner, and operator (if different from landowner) are contributing.

This requires implementing a detailed record keeping system and annually evaluating actual costs. Remember that effective agreements share risk and profit among all entities involved.

The length of a cow-calf share agreement generally is based on marketing year as settlement typically occurs at weaning or feeder calf sale. This Iowa State University Ag Decision Maker Tool (https://www.extension.iastate.edu/ agdm/wholefarm/html/c2-36.html) can help with the math. Every change in contribution by involved parties should change the profit split; there is no such thing as a “50/50” rule of thumb!

Contract grazing This, too, could be as large as a three party agreement with a landowner, livestock owner, and a caretaker. It is a common arrangement in the Kansas Flint Hills range and on Great Plains wheat acres, with feedlot owners hiring operators to manage stockers on land owned by a third family. This also is a popular agreement in many parts of the Midwest where pasture is sparse and/or high priced. Diversified row-crop operations often send cow-calf pairs to summer pasture in areas like Missouri or Kentucky to be managed by a landowner or third-party caretaker.

It should be noted that grazing land has been owned for generations by some families that have never owned cattle.

"Pasture" continued from page 28 In a contract grazing arrangement, a rate is typically established per animal unit month (AUM) or per head per day which is paid by the cow owner to the landowner/operator. In this type of agreement, less risk is assumed by the operator, but there also is limited upside potential. Typical points of negotiation for a contract grazing agreement include who will do the work, who determines which inputs such as mineral, creep, and potentially supplement are added, and how those inputs impact total payment.

Animal performance-based Some stocker owners pursue agreements that pay the grazier by pounds of gain added per day or per grazing season. This often transfers more risk to the operator with little reward above the standard rated noted in the pasture rent and contract grazing sections above. It is important to remember that forage type will dramatically influence potential gains. For example, Eastern Corn Belt grasslands typically do not achieve yearling gains above 2 lb./day without added supplementation, whereas more traditional stocker areas such as the Great Plains may well exceed 2 lb./day if the genetics and condition of the cattle will allow. On unimproved fescue, gain may be as low as 1 lb./day. It is critical that supplementation be allowed (if it fits the market outlet) and that the operator is guaranteed an adequate grazing period to capture adequate income. A better performance-based arrangement is a

As I have been talking with other companies and land professionals, we are all seeing more land come to the market this fall. November is the month that statistically has the most farmland sales. Most sellers seem to wait until after harvest to sell. I feel that it would be beneficial for sellers to sell now rather than wait till fall.

It becomes a supply and demand issue. You want to sell when there is not a huge supply on the market. This will draw a higher demand for your farmland. Also, with the crop yields looking to be affected by the lack of rain the past three weeks this may result in lower sales results this fall.

The end results for the crop yields are still unknown. We hope to see some good rains and for the crops to make a good comeback to keep farms selling strong. Most of the farms being auctioned currently are estate/trust sales. Results from the 25 auctions this last month have the average for high quality ground at $8,238/acre and medium quality ground averaging $5,496/acre. Low quality ground is also trending steady at an average of $3,264/acre. I am seeing downward trends in the market, but a strong outlook for this fall.

2018-2019 ICA Carcass Challenge Contest Recruiting Kicks Off The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association Young Cattlemen Leadership Program (YCLP) is recruiting for the 8th Annual ICA Carcass Challenge and will need a commitment from interested participants as soon as possible.

The program provides a friendly, education-

al competition as cattle producers donate steers they think will produce high quality beef. Steers can be donated by individuals, county cattlemen’s associations, breed associations and any business that would like to be involved.

Steers must be 2018 spring-born calves that weigh between 650 and 750 pounds on the delivery date of November 1, 2018 to the Kennedy Cattle Company Feedlot. Steers

EXCELLENCE The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association Bull and Heifer Evaluation program serves the needs of both the cattle seedstock producers and producers with commercial cowcalf herds. The program, which has been in place since 1985, provides seedstock producers comparison and bench marking information. The cow-calf producer benefits include access to superior genetics for their herd to enhance their bottom line.

must have received all their mandatory vaccinations at that time and be weaned for at least 30 days. Producers who want to compete can donate one or more steers for the contest.

Awards will be given to those steers that demonstrate the highest quality at a moderate cost of production. This is called the Retail Value per Days on Feed (RVDoF).

The RVDoF was the original top award when the program began in 2011 and is the most sought after information in today’s fed cattle market.

The top steer donor(s) will receive a cash prize of $5,000 and a traveling trophy to display for one year following the contest.

Additional awards will be given to the steers with Largest Ribeye Area, the Top Marbling Score, Highest Average Daily Gain and the Chef’s Award which is for a 12-14” ribeye with the highest marbling score.

Steer donors and sponsors will receive “insider information” on their steers. This information includes DNA-tested carcass traits, ultrasound results while on-feed and information on any health issues. The infor-

mation given is to help educate on profit gains and carcass quality. Whether you are a cow-calf producer, backgrounder or run a feedlot, the bottom line in beef cattle production is profitability and consumer acceptance. Each step in the value-chain affects the end product.

There will also be an Open House held at the Kennedy Cattle Company Feedlot for donors and sponsors to view their steers.

The event will take place in February preceding the second ultrasound test and midterm weights taken. The event will provide the opportunity to discuss marketing and the traits and practices that impact carcass quality.

ICA thanks Elanco Animal Health, which is the lead supporter of the ICA Carcass Challenge.

ICA Bull and Heifer Evaluation Program Reservation Period Open strict selection criteria to be eligible for one of three ICA sales held across the state. The criteria are determined by ICA’s Production Efficiency Committee, which is made up of all current consignors to the program. The top 75% of the evaluated bulls and replacement heifers in each breed that meet the criteria earn ICA’s ‘Symbol of Excellence’ and are sold at the sales.

The program also offers private-test reservations that may be beneficial for smaller producers interested in a cost-effective way of gathering ultrasound and performance data on their herd while reserving the right to take their stock home after the evaluation.

The reservation period is open and on a first come, first served basis. Both consignment and private reservations for fall-born and spring-born bulls will be taken through September 15, or until the pens are full. The heifer reservations can be made through November 10, or until pens are full.

Delivery dates for cattle will begin in early October. The superior genetics that come from this program are then offered to commercial cattle producers at three sales across Iowa in the spring.

COMMENTARY

The Road Ahead in September for Fat and Feeder Cattle

by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade

It is hard to believe the ‘guys on the other side of the table’ showed their hand and bought 173 and 174 Dressed early in the week a few times throughout August, which said single-handedly confirmed the overall strength for Cattle. The financial crisis in Turkey and their sliding currency known as the ‘Lira’, which has spooked European banks and tried to rattle our own SP500 and Nasdaq has failed to spook Fats and Feeders that have proved resilient and done so with some pretty weak sale barn activity. There were times this year to date where Crude Oil went up and up while Cattle failed and yet throughout August the Crude has failed and the Cattle markets have been standing strong and done so with purported ‘walls of cattle’.

It will interest you to know that while many powerful multihundred billion dollar stocks had some difficulty throughout August that Texas Roadhouse stock was rallying. Recall Home Depot announced really strong earnings and revenue this last month and while Texas Roadhouse did experience a correction after the own announcement of earnings and guidance the stock came right back up. The last several weeks have brought very good news on ‘Retail Sales’ and a 3 year high on ‘Worker Productivity’. Look, we all know that Home Depot parking lots, as well as Texas Roadhouse parking lots, are full most of the time. The day you see Home Depot and Texas Roadhouse lots 3/4th empty you can assume we are in a recession or depression. That’s how stalwart the two companies have been to this country and thus likely good economic signals for

One thing that concerns us greatly is the massive debt of the country both on a personal, corporate and government level.

President Trump and team must figure out a way to deal with the national debt at the same time they keep Gross Domestic Product above 4%. The Fed has reported in August that ‘Household Debt’ is now 13.3 TRILLION dollars and has gone up 454 BILLION dollars the last year. The national debt of our country and China is a ticking time-bomb. Give it 18 to 24 months to blow, unless clever debt teams solve the problem.

The Board Cattle are still sharply undervalued and exports remain strong and September should be a solid month for Cattle prices.

Hopefully we are now done with all of the experts and brokerage analysts being done with their constant dooms-day chatter about walls of cattle and maybe now Cattlemen can prosper in a way that parallels the love of beef and country and the strength of our U.S. stock markets. Is that asking for too much? Clearly not.

Take a look at the charts below and see why a picture is worth a thousand words and, if you are a bona-fide cattle producer or investor you can probably think of many times over the years that you wish you had hedged your Cattle on the dirt or simply taken the hedges’ off. Believe it or not folks, sale season is upon us! I am sure that you are way ahead of me and have all your sale calves broke, clipped, and pictures taken! This is an extremely busy time of the year for livestock producers, especially for those of you preparing for a fall sale. Most of us do not fully understand how much goes into putting a sale on. So many things, big and small, have to be planned and executed to make it happen. Many of us don’t have the capacity for one reason or another to put on a live auction of our own but still market and sell our cattle in some other fashion, such as consignment sales, private treaty, or the ever increasingly popular option of an online sale. I thought I would offer some thoughts that might help you get a few more calves moved this season. To be honest, I am speaking to myself too as we are taking the plunge and having an online sale of our own later this fall. So here we go…

First and foremost, we HAVE to have our cattle looking the part.

Those beautiful pictures and videos don’t just come from a computer. Have those calves in the right condition and get started early rinsing and getting that hair looking good!

On that same note, get them good and broke. Almost every phone call I get from someone looking to buy cattle ends with, “she needs to be a calm one” or “I can’t have anything upheaded.”

It sounds silly but I am telling you if you put the time in getting them well broke, it will pay off. Kids are starting to show at a younger age all the time and we don’t want their first experience to

be a bad one.

The next thing is to get some good pictures. Going out in the pasture and taking photos with your iPhone isn’t going to get your cattle sold. Spend the extra money and get someone to your place that will get the pictures taken professionally. In today’s world of technology and social media, good pictures sell more cattle than probably anything!

Advertise. I am not just telling you that because I work for Livestock Plus. If you don’t get those pictures and info out, people do not know. You can’t expect buyers to just show up or call asking what you have for sale. Get some of those good pictures you took on the internet! As much as I hate to say it, Facebook has become a great tool in spreading the word.

Next piece of advice is… get some people to your place to look at them. I know anyone on the LPI team would be happy to take a look when we are passing through.

Last but not least, be realistic. Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes and think about what they would really be willing to pay. It’s kind of humorous to me when the same person tells me they have to have 10k for heifer they are selling but only want to give me 2k when they call about one they are looking at. I’m not saying you should give your stock away but just understand that selling high dollar cattle doesn’t happen overnight. Selling a pretty darn good one for a little less than what she’s probably worth, to the right kid, may just make you more money in the end than what you realize.

So, take all that for what it’s worth. I am anxious to get back out there ringside and see many cattle and friends from across the country. Don’t hesitate to check in and see where my travels are taking me, I would be happy to chat on the phone or even stop in for a visit.

So this month I’m going to do something a little different! I need to give a little back story... a couple years ago my family began getting to know the Suhr Family showing pigs at our county fair and on the Iowa Swine Jackpot Series.

They have become a huge part of our livestock family! Miss Madison is the only daughter of Scott and Natalie Suhr, and let me tell you growing up with six brothers this girl is quick witted, a little sassy and so intelligent. We were honored to have her represent our little county at the Iowa State Fair as our Adair County Fair Queen!

Madie has texted and called me several times through this process which is beyond flattering that she’d ask my opinion. She had mentioned she wanted to make a difference and actually follow through with her goals being queen. I asked her to write a message I could include in my article this month ...

Madie’s story: For as long as I can remember I’ve been involved in the livestock industry. Whether it be showing a bottle-lamb at the age of 4 that at the time was taller than me or just this past year competing at my first national show. So much of who I am today I can directly thank the livestock industry JUG livestock waterers:Layout 1 8/11/11 8:50 AM Page 1 for. I couldn’t imagine not spending my winters in a toasty barn pulling lambs, or my hot summers washing pigs. Through this amazing industry my eyes have been opened to many opportunities, but one opportunity in particular has a special place in my heart. These past two years I’ve had the chance to get to know the Rohrig family and watch their daughter, Treva, grow as a person. Treva, like many other individuals, has Down Syndrome. Knowing the Rohrig family, I have seen Treva’s personality light up being around livestock, and her smile grow ear to ear. Unfortunately many individuals don’t get to experience the joy that the livestock industry brings so many of us. For that reason, I would like to coordinate a swine show at the 2019 Iowa State Fair for those with intellectual disabilities, like Treva. So they may experience the joy, love, and confidence that the livestock industry has given me.
