MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com
Greetings! Can you believe that it’s almost Thanksgiving? We are getting pretty close to a new year. Santa Claus is probably just as busy, or more so, than I am. The food story this month comes at the last minute, crunch time for me. I thought for a while I was going to have to tell you that I had nothing to report on. It just so happened that I was delivering two calves and got an invite to stop and look at another set of calves that were on another sale and invited to supper. Dixie and I got fed and treated like we were some kinda celebrities. First, and very impressive to me, was the bacon wrapped Ritz crackers with just a little shot of brown sugar on top and baked in the oven. This appetizer was deadly and I darn near foundered on them before the main course. Next, to offset all the pork we had in the appetizers, slow cooked beef brisket. She started the brisket at 4:00 in the morning. That’s darn slow

cooking 'cause we ate it at 6:30 pm. I'm not sure what she did with it, but it had flavor almost good enough to be a certified or branded beef program of some sort. Then for a side, back to good ol' basic farm girl cookin'. I'm not sure why I was listening to this recipe talk but I was. She put cubed taters, Parmesan cheese, flour and some butter in a zip lock bag, shook the tar out of it, put it in a pan, and then topped it with real bacon chunks, onion, and baked it in the oven. Good solid taters with a little bacon grease kicker. Deadly, a fluffy guys dream come true!! This ol' farm boy was in pig heaven. But we weren't done yet, there was a baked bean chaser on that main meal. Then, after a couple of adult beverages and sharing a lot of intelligence with some good cowboys and girls we moved on to my favorite desert, apple crisp. This was apple crisp made without oatmeal (oatmeal is for breakfast not apple crisp). Then, to top that off, we had homemade ice cream to make it deadly apple crisp. It just doesn’t get any better than that. This was one great stop, Kris and Danny! Thanks for a great evening. That supper sure beats a minced ham sandwich!! This is a pretty special time of year and sometimes I get to complaining and think that I am picked on, but in reality, I have lots to be thankful for. Please say an extra prayer for those that are less fortunate, have lost a loved one, or maybe have someone protecting our freedom that won’t be home for Thanksgiving. God Bless our service folks and all of you.

Show cattle breeding: Focus on functional traits and balance Soundness, volume, muscle and balance are the key cattle traits Dave Allan first looks for when he’s judging a show. But those cattle traits are determined far in advance of the point when an animal enters the showring. Specific traits and qualities were carefully selected when mating decisions were made to hopefully provide the winning combination. Allan, a Purina® Honor® Show Chow® Ambassador from Schulenburg, Texas, understands the importance genetics have on success both in and out of the showring. He and wife Becky operate Bar A Cattle Co. and Genesource, a semen distribution company, where they’re always striving to make better cattle. They have three sons who are active cattle showmen as well. “Breeding and developing better cattle has been my passion since I was very young,” says Allan. In addition to breeding national champions, he has had the honor of selecting champions in the showring and knows what it takes to compete at the highest level. Earlier this year, Allan judged the Angus show at the National Western Stock Show. “Most judges, including myself, are not looking for ‘the most’ of any one trait, we are looking for the animal that is most complete and offers the best combination of traits,” says Allan. “I’ve learned that it takes great genetics in combination with the correct health and feeding program – and a lot of hard work – to create a champion.”
Study strengths, weaknesses Studying the cows and the bulls from which your calf was produced can provide a glimpse into your showring future, as will studying the results of previous matings by the same cow or bull. Doing your homework will help you determine what traits you desire in your next calf, and which matings might get you there. But, while it seems like a simple philosophy, a good mating on paper might not always end with the anticipated result. Allan points out that the first basic rule of genetics is “like begets like,” meaning there’s often a strong similarity between the offspring and their parents, and that of their distant ancestors. However, he cautions that there is no guarantee of similarity due to the laws of inheritance. He explains, “Full siblings contain 50 percent of the same DNA but can vary from 25 to 75 percent because of chromosome inheritance and recombination. That means full siblings can have very different phenotypes.” Whether you plan on breeding your own cow or heifer, or have plans to purchase your next calf, Allan maintains that doing your homework and being honest about the cattle you’re evaluating are good principles to follow. “Before I decide which bulls to use, I like to really study the cows,” says Allan. “You also have to be honest with yourself on the strengths and weaknesses that are in your cattle.” Understanding strengths and weaknesses when breeding or buying can help you improve your selection process. Allan says don’t be afraid of trying new matings to help get you to your desired end result. “I’ve never been afraid of breeding two
68
Livestock Plus Inc.
animals together that are very different in their kind and genetics. Sometimes to fix problems or make a change, you can mate cattle with opposite phenotypes to achieve the desired look.”
Focus on fundamentals Functional traits like soundness and capacity are important to Allan in both the showring and in mating decisions. “The first things I consider are if the cattle will be sound in their structure, have some rib and capacity, and in the case of the steers, have enough muscle,” Allan says. Frame size is another key factor he considers. Allan shares that he’s looking for the optimum size, not maximum, to fit the environment. Once those functional traits have been addressed, Allan then looks at the finer traits: • Are they long and clean through their front end? • Can they maintain a relatively level top and hip on the move? • Do they have a sound and attractive set to their hind leg? Allan also evaluates bone structure, but cautions to breed for it in moderation. “Bone is nice to look at and you need an adequate amount, but it has a negative correlation with birth weight and calving ease, so I would breed for it in moderation.” From there, differences in trait selection exists between steers and heifers. “Muscle is obviously important when it comes to show steers, but like bone, maximums can lead to structural issues and other problems,” Allan warns. “In breeding show steers, the industry has selected for big square hips and heavy muscled stifles, but I think in some cases it has overlooked muscle down the top. That’s an important trait given there is a lot more value in the cuts from the loin.” For heifers, Allan emphasizes to evaluate and select for fertility, udders and feet – all key components for success and longevity outside of the showring.
Don’t overlook nutrition The work doesn’t end with genetic selection – once the cow is bred or when the calf is on the ground, management and nutrition play a huge role in success. “Without proper care and feeding you can’t get very far,” Allan says. “Timely feeding and consistent amounts of feed are important along with clean, fresh water and free-choice hay.” He adds that offering a high-quality feed with the right amounts of protein, energy and fiber, along with the right vitamins and minerals, is a must. Supplements can also be considered, but Allan reminds exhibitors to think “optimum, not maximum” when it comes to refining an animal’s look. “Champions are a combination of good genetics, quality management and great showmanship,” says Allan. “Keeping an open mind, being willing to learn and putting in hard work are the keys to success.”

sible to use an old bull’s semen for as many years as the old bull is of value genetically. Recently Dr. Caires purchased a small number of semen straws from a bull I had 35 years ago. I’m going to have to find out what he is going to use it for. Look Dr. Caires article up, it is extremely interesting reading.

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things by Evan Rayl
Each of the nice days we have experienced recently are leading up to something I don’t like any which-way in the world - WINTER. It all starts with nights when the temperature drops below freezing which is nothing compared to temps below zero and snow storms. In the summer, one only needs one light layer of clothing, but in winter it takes three thick layers and heavy boots. In addition, I just hate the months of such short days. The only good things are Thanksgiving, Christmas, Denver, and bull sales after the first of the year. In January, our oldest granddaughter will have a baby boy. He will be our first great grandchild. Happiness is good health and a bad memory. A recent report says nearly half the workers on dairy farms in the U.S. are immigrants and if the dairies were to lose those workers, the cost of milk to consumers would almost double. The report says one third of all U.S. Dairy farms hire foreign-born workers and those farms produce 80 percent of the milk It is not true that foreign workers are taking jobs away from American workers. Owners of large dairy‘s have tried to hire American workers without success despite a wage rate well above the minimum wage. The survey showed the wage on dairy farms was $11.54 per hour. Framing up houses, shingling houses, and concrete construction (most of the workers on these crews would be foreign, even in Des Moines, Iowa). They all would pay more than the dairy farms. It is estimated 7,000 dairies would close down if foreign workers were not available. Too much of a good thing can be wonderful. By now you have probably noticed I like studying genetics. Recently, I was attracted to an article in the October 2015 Successful Farming magazine on pages 52 and 54. It tells about the work of Dr. Kyle Caires, who is at Berry College in Georgia. He is transferring spermatogonial cells from old donor bulls testicles to the testicles of young recipient bulls. We all know the old bull can be collected, but eventually the old bull will no longer put up semen and his semen will no longer be available. But with Dr. Caires method of transferring cells from an old bull to younger bulls, it would be pos-

If only we’d stop trying to be happy, we could have a pretty good time. The Upper and Lower Mississippi River Basin received low grades based on a variety of factors, including transportation infrastructure. Other factors included water supply, ecosystems, transportation, economy, recreation, flood control, and risk reduction, according to America’s Watershed Initiative’s Report just released. The average of all factors was a D+. The group specifically cited the poor condition of infrastructure such as locks and dams, and a lack of funding that could lead to water security issues as key reasons for the low rating. The report said ”critical components for lock and dams are in relatively poor condition across the watershed, and a dangerous lack of funding for infrastructure maintenance means that multiple failures may be imminent. River transportation currently functions with some delays, but as these systems continue to deteriorate, significant failures could be expected which would result in severe, economic, public safety and water security problems.” Sustaining and increasing the basin’s capacity through rehabilitation, repairs and innovation, it says, is necessary in order to maintain a competitive economy.” The Mississippi River watershed is the fourth largest in the word, according to the group. It is made up of five river basins that flow across 31 states It falls short in its goal of serving as the nation’s most valuable water passage, according to the report, which notes that the watershed transports $54 billion of agricultural products annually. It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy that makes happiness. Barnum and Bailey (B and B) finally settled their lawsuit with Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) with HSUS paying the circus company $25 million. It actually cost B and B more than they won, but the important part is they won. This means B and B get to keep their Asian elephants as part of the show. As the major draw of their circus the elephants will guarantee huge crowds will continue fill the seats. HSUS has deep pockets because they have held themselves out as giving huge dollars to pet shelters. Unfortunately, HSUS has for the first time, picked on an entity with the financial resources and fortitude to fight back. Understandably, the future of the circus rested upon the outcome of the case and B and B put it all on the line. In the end, they won, and won big, gaining back all of its court costs because of the frivolous lawsuit. It’s ironic that HSUS has taken to heart the oft-quoted P.T. Barnum, who said there’s a sucker born every minute. The strength of HSUS comes from its bank account. It is frustrating that HSUS’s revenue comes in large part from wellintended consumers who actually believe they’re supporting needy pets and animal shelters, rather than an agenda they likely would disavow if they were aware of it. Thanks to a masterful job HSUS has done in hiding its true agenda under the guise of animal welfare. n

Well, its official, Mike Sorensen is the proud owner of a crossbred gilt. Words I never thought would be written!! Needless to say, my son, Tucker, is absolutely over the moon that Papa will be involved in #RealPigFarming, too! I’m not sure that one gilt qualifies, but my father sure made my kiddos pretty proud! I hope dad has fun crossing over to another species, even if it is for one head! I’m sure Jasmine will get plenty of attention under Tuck’s close supervision. Oh and yes, Dad’s gilt has already been named Jasmine. Makes me giggle! I tell ya Tucker thought that it was so cool “bidding” on her and calling Papa every couple minutes for updates! I hope everyone has taken notice of our new HOLIDAY SHOPPING GUIDE!! It was designed to make it a little less stressful purchasing Christmas cards, prints, custom bling caps/shirts, jewelry, stuffed cows or maybe even some promotional items for your family farm. Hopefully I gave you a couple ideas you wouldn’t have thought of or maybe don’t have enough time to shop for this holiday season! I always like giving my business to the people in our industry, too!! Our funny for the month was during Dad’s online sale in early
October. Tucker was supposed to be resting in the chair and NOT playing with his cousins. He was not happy about trying to recover from walking pneumonia but had been on antibiotics, so he was safe to be there. He so badly wanted to play football, but he had to sit and rest! He was feeling pretty good, and was not a happy camper to say the least. At one point he said, “I probably have sitting pneumonia now!” Matt still thinks its pretty funny, but I was definitely not that impressed. I hope everyone is staying healthy and traveling safe to all the fall sales!!! Please give us a call if you are looking for something in particular!! May God Bless our nation and our military! Wishing everyone a very BLESSED Thanksgiving! Heidi Sorensen Rohrig 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com
