MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings! I’m not sure what anybody else thinks, but I think my winter was ok as far as travel goes. I’m sure ready for summer, though. My little ranch needs lots of work and I’m ready for fresh air, putting my feet on solid ground and maybe even breaking sweat. Don’t worry, I won’t sweat too much. This report will probably take most of you by surprise. My stomach has had a pretty uneventful April. I have been in a search for something to write about and that has been uneventful, until Dixie and I were on the road the other day. Dixie usually doesn’t do much for breakfast other than an occasional mocha frappuccino from McDonald’s. I usually prefer a more substantial meal (trying to be polite) but for lack of a better place, I landed at Hardee’s. Yes, I know, Hardee’s isn’t the Ruth Kris steak house of fast foods either, but it is a change. Well, to my surprise the menu had changed since I had been in Hardee’s, for breakfast anyway.

This is one of the best purebred Simmental bulls I have ever seen. I am 82 years old and have seen as many bulls as anyone in the country. I am one of the fussiest bull buyers in America and a bull has to be about perfect for me to buy him. This fancy bull is so deep ribbed, square hipped, full of muscle and red meat. He is big topped, wide based, clean fronted, and clean sheathed. He is very sound on his feet and legs and carries himself well. He has a topnotch set of EPD’s and is a HERD BULL SUPREME. Out of a 1st calf heifer and the great WS Step Up X27. We paid $52,000, he’s one bull that was worth it!

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things by Evan Rayl

For the most part, we’ve enjoyed a good spring so far this year. There have been no big snow or ice storms to mess up calving. We are going to need some rain for the corn, beans, and grass later on, but right now everything looks just great. Every time I go out to the country, I’m asked, “how do I like living in the city?” Well, like everything, there is good and bad. I like not having to move snow, or not having to worry about the cattle, but I don’t like not knowing any of our neighbors, having to keep the doors locked all the time, and pulling the shades every evening. At the farm we didn’t even have any shades. While forbidden fruit is said to taste sweeter, it usually spoils faster. The best thing of all about moving to Des Moines is all three of our kids live within 20 miles. Our daughter works at Drake University and her husband works at Allied-Nationwide Insurance. Our oldest son builds go-cart racing engines and his wife works as a bookkeeper-receptionist for a company that sells and installs handling equipment for corn and soybean seed companies all over the world. Only our younger son has kids at home. These two grandsons will play 20 baseball games this summer. We will try to go to every one of them. Our son is an IT person and works two miles from where we live now and his wife operates a child care. The reason people blame things on previous generations is that there’s only one other choice. Our daughter has a son who is an electrical engineer and a daughter who is studying to be an eye doctor. Our oldest son has a married daughter who works in a doctor’s office. Our youngest son has a son who is a freshman at Southeast Polk and another son who is in the fourth grade at Clay Elementary in Altoona. Character is what you know you are, not what others think you are. Shirley and I are living in Dallas County, the fastest growing county in Iowa and the thirteenth fastest in the nation. The two rest stops just west of Des Moines have just closed and will be torn down shortly. Plus the bridge just west of the rest stops will open and will be open to the north and be known as Grand Prairie Parkway. This will open up a whole new area for retail and housing. I am totally amazed how fast all the construction goes in this area. I know computer scheduling and computer inventory lists help a great deal. It will only be a short time before the expressway circling Des Moines on the south side of I-80 will be done from Waukee to Altoona. What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight, its the size of the fight in the dog. We are living in a three bedroom ground floor apartment that is only a couple of years old. We use two of the bedrooms for our offices. There is a garage for our car, but my pickup sits outside. Our mailbox is about the same distance away as the one at the farm was. We are close to grocery stores, shopping, and our doctors, especially Shirley’s eye doctor. As you may or may not remember she had a cornea transplant on her left eye. It continues to improve, but very slowly. At our last visit he decided to check her right eye. It was clouded over, but he said he could fix it with laser. He sure did. She walked out of the office without glasses. A couple days later she renewed her drivers license. I lost my job as her driver. We

A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval. Who’s idea was it to have cattle standing in 8 inches of straw for pictures these days? Personally, I would like them standing on dirt or short grass. I want to be able to see how much body they have and how much distance there is between their body and the ground. I hope we’re not going to pile up straw clear to their belly. This reminds me of the years after World War II, when cattle were poised with no legs showing at all. n

Some Thoughts About Feed Efficiency by Evan Rayl

When cattlemen get together, a lot of discussion about cattle efficiency is going on these days because of higher feed costs. To truly put a handle on feed efficiency, bull calves need to be put on a 70 day feed test somewhere between weaning and a year of age. Any feed test after a bull is a year old is pretty much worthless. To test heifer calves is of questionable value because they should be grown out on a high roughage ration. The more the value of the bull calves, the more likely the value of figuring out how to test their sisters. There is not much doubt, testing both would have have three times the value of just testing the bulls. For the past five years, we have been testing our (200 head) bull calves. We found a bull who was worth using in the second crop and his calves in the forth and fifth calf crop were tested with all but one of his offspring and and all of those of his dam were in the top half of the test, with several right at the top of the test. Feed efficiency seems to be a highly inherited trait. Calves should be weighed at weaning, but very few commercial cattlmen do this. When the calves are weighed, it would be a good idea to weigh their mothers the same day or close to the same day. The goal should be for the calves to weigh 50% of what the cows weigh. We weighed both for the first time last fall. Because of the very good pasture we had last summer, only a few first calf heifers even came close to 50%. If we would have started weighing during the previous dry years, more calves would have come close to the 50% target. Actually, we did weigh cows and their calves back in the 90’s for three years running. But that was when the Association was putting together the system for mature cow weights. Cows with high milk EPD numbers will require more feed every day of their life. In addition to needing more feed, this high feed requirement will cause fewer cows to settle during the breeding season. A few years ago, we had 10 ET sisters from a high milk bull. None of them lasted past their second calf. For the longest time in recent years, sale managers were promoting high milk as a good thing, when doing the opposite would have produced more useful cows. It was nice to see the promotion of high milk go away. n

From the Tailgate

Hello! I hope that everyone had a successful calving season. I know that in my neck of the woods, it was as good as one could have, but anything would be better than last year. Now, as the tractors have started to roll in the fields and we are getting cows AI’d, it is time to get ready for the summer events to start. As we do get into the summer show season, I am reminded of the subject that I have talked about before; coming in second is not always a bad thing. The lessons to be learned may be more valuable than being in first. Just an idea to discuss with our young show people and maybe with us older ones, too! I also would like to take the time to discuss something that is what I think is a driving force of the livestock industry; the ever, so good quality people you find within the industry. I just keep finding more and more of them as I travel around the country to sales and shows. Not only is it the people that I have known for a long time, but it is also their children that I see getting into the business. That in itself is probably more rewarding to me than anything. This was something that I got to thinking about after talking to a fellow cattleman at my annual County Cattleman’s Banquet this past February. It was good to just sit down for a little bit that evening and talk about children as well as grandchildren and the hope of them wanting to be in the livestock world. Of course, we also had to talk about the sire groups of the bulls being sold this spring. Then, that got me to thinking about how lucky I have been to have the wife and two very good boys that keep challenging me, not only to be a good role model to them but to everyone I come in contact with in my travels. I do believe that this is why I am the richest man in the world and I don’t mean financially. Well, as always, if anyone at LPI can assist you in merchandising your livestock just call or email. THANK YOU for your time. - Bruce

So Elliot, also known as Eli, came home from school and told his mom, “Mama, I told my teacher bulls go potty out their stomachs and heifers go potty out the back.” Eli’s mom, Sara Erickson, asked what the teacher had to say. Eli responded, “She said it was nice, but she didn’t look like she thought it was nice.” Elliot is Sara & Dale Erickson’s 4 year old little boy. Erickson Farms – Henry, Illinois, has quite the little herdsman on their hands, especially when they were looking at calves and Elliot says, “Now that MAB has some damn nice bones!” I have to follow with my niece, Independence, who is also at that funny stage! When I stop to see her, I usually talk to her about pigs. The other day we were talking about pigs as we cuddled and I never thought she was picking up everything we talk about until her Mom sent me a picture of Indie beside the pig statue at Iowa Machine Shed Restaurant that says, “Look Mom I found Heidi’s pig!!! It’s Heidi’s pig!!” Indie and I also talked about how our pigs act like dogs, sometimes. She pulls on my arm and says, “Come on Aunt Heidi, I wanna show you my pig!” Now she is very excited and I thought, well it must be the stuffed animal pig we got her brother, Michael. Nope she says, “Look Aunt, its my pig! Look at my pig!” as she is petting and talking to her German Shepherd dog, Reagan. I started laughing because Reagan was bouncing around acting like it was his normal name. “Come on, Pig!” Thank you all for the photography submissions and we already have a couple more submissions to start next month’s voting online in our “Gallery” on www.livestockplusinc.com Also, continue to LIKE us on Facebook. Wishing all of our livestock families so much luck on the show road and as you are looking for the next “great one” out of this year’s calf crop! Please travel safe and most important, HAVE FUN!!! Be sure to throw your magazine in the pickup when you are traveling, you never know when there might be a great stop to look at calves! Check out our Iowa and Illinois Show Cattle Producer Maps!!
