First calf heifers are something everyone in the business deals with, getting a nice small calf has so many advantages. You have a live calf, that get’s up and sucks (if they don’t do those two things does anything else matter?), a first calf heifer that will breed back quicker because she’s had no trauma, and you get a replacement female that is a great cow with calving ease bred into her pedigree. MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings, Well, according to the calendar, it’s time to have a little vacation. I guess I’m ready. So that you are aware, there will not be a July issue, as usual. PLEASE look for us in August for the yearbook issue. The first food story comes from Mitchell, South Dakota. Yes, I have been known to migrate out of my territory a little; from time to time we cross over to cover each other’s sales. The Cattleman’s Club was the place that Dustin Carter, Donny Leddy, and I met to have our evening meal, and possibly a couple of adult beverages. My choice was from the Cattleman’s Signature Cuts, a Bacon Wrapped Filet. I’m not sure what they did to that filet, but it was prepared to perfection, flavorful, seasoned to perfection, a great steak. The atmosphere was perfect; a little bar-ish, but quiet enough you could visit without hollering. Then to top the evening off, we had the pleasure of

4

visiting with Fred and Joan DeRouchy as they were leaving from an evening meeting. Cattleman’s Club, Fred and Joan, Donny, and Dustin thanks for a great time in Mitchell. Next on the food tour was The Franklin Hotel, Restaurant & Lounge in Downtown Strawberry Point, Iowa. Dixie and I were headed home

from Wisconsin and wanted to take the two-lane highway to avoid traffic and be on the scenic route. That took us through Strawberry Point and we landed there at noon. “The Franklin Hotel” was our choice. Not knowing what to expect, you anticipate average, and hope for the best. We were more than pleasantly surprised. Two choices; you could order from the menu or you could choose the brunch buffet. We all know what I’m going to choose in that case. I’m always thinking I will get the best of them; get twenty dollars’ worth of food for ten dollars. I think this buffet was a winner again. I got full before I got my ten dollars used. They had everything this ol’ southern Iowa boy needed. It had meat, taters, corn, nice salad bar, and coconut cream pie with a Root Beer kicker. Dixie was likewise impressed. We were both full enough that we took a 4 block stroll on main street Strawberry Point. The Franklin is a great place to eat when you are going through Strawberry Point. My son Ray “Bubba” Sorensen

COMMENTARY

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things

increases have now be rescinded. The Postal Regulatory Commission set the price for postage. The Postal Service, while a government agency, receives no funding from tax dollars. All money to support the post office comes from revenue of selling stamps and other merchandise. I don’t know what the key to success is, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.

TransCanada estimates that about 16,800 gallons of oil leaked into a field in South Dakota as part of a spill that has shut the Keystone pipeline down while officials investigate. The company says it reported the 400 barrel estimate April 7th to the National Response Center and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Administration. It says the estimate is based on the excavation of soil exposing more than 100 feet of pipe and takes into account factors including oil observed in the soil and the potential area affected. TransCanada hasn’t yet said what caused the leak. About 100 workers were on the site, which is approximately four miles from the Freeman pump station in Hutchinson County, said a company spokesman. He reports the leak is controlled and there is no significant environmental impact and no threat to public safety. The pipeline runs from Alberta, Canada, to refineries in Illinois and Cushing, Oklahoma, passing through the eastern Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri. The Keystone pipeline can handle 550,000 barrels, or about 23 million gallons daily. It’s part of a pipeline system that also would have included the Keystone XL pipeline had President Barack Obama not rejected that project last November. Analysts say the shutdown will have a short-term impact in which less-heavy Canadian crude will be getting to the market, but the system is already oversupplied, so consumers are unlikely to see an impact at the pump. Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are good is like expecting the bull not to charge because you are a vegetarian. Five Iowa 4-H youth were selected to attend the National 4-H Conference last month in Washington, D. C. Anna Marie Ehlers, Buena Vista County; Elizabeth Nible and Victoria Smiley, Madison County; and Mallory Hammitt and Hannah Peterson, Webster County represented Iowa’s interests in the national 4-H program, said Cayla Taylor, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H youth program coordinator. ISU Extension and Outreach sends delegates to the National 4-H Conference each year. Delegates must submit an application and interview for the opportunity to attend the conference. “It is an honor to be selected to attend National 4-H Conference. Delegates are selected based on their significant involvement in 4-H, as well as their citizenship and communication skills,” Taylor said. “Through this experience, youth have the opportunity to actively participate in 4-H, as well as their leadership citizenship and communication skills.” “They also have the opportunity to actively participate in 4-H program development at the national level. While at the conference, youth also are identifying and sharing solutions to issues affecting young people,” Taylor said. “These solutions then are shared by youth delegates with government officials as well as national associations and donors. The intent is that youth will share the knowledge and skill that they’ve gained with their peers and leaders within their own communities once they return home from National 4-H Conference,” Taylor said. Just because you’re following a well marked trail don’t mean that whoever made it knew where they were going. The cost of mailing a letter or a postcard, dropped a few weeks ago. First class letters fell from 49 cents to 47 cents and post cards dropped a penny to 34 cents each. For the last 97 years stamp prices have only gone up. Prices were last lowered in 1919 when they dropped from three cents to two. Prices on postage had been higher than normal inflation as the Postal Service worked to save itself from the recession that had hit the entire country. Those temporary price

The American Angus Association has announced a scoring system for feet of both registered bulls and cows. Best time to score them for the first time would be at one year of age. If the majority of bulls are sold at one year of age, that would most likely be the only opportunity to record the score if they are going into a commercial herd. Forms are available for sending the scores to the Association. On the other hand, herd bulls and cows could be scored each year as long as they are in the original herd or transferred to another registered herd, that is if the new owner wants to continue to do so. Scoring from the side and front view are involved with scores from one through nine and five being average or ideal. I expect in time, there will be scoring for legs, shoulders, hips, toplines, and udders. Years ago, classifiers were going from farm to farm to score cattle, but interest in grading died off. I would be willing to bet a complete record of various selection tools will be very important in the future. When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on. ~ Thomas Jefferson When the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s CEO Forrest Roberts, resigned after several years of service a few months ago, the NCBA executive committee hired a global search firm, Kincannon & Reed to find a replacement. Over a 100 resumes’ were considered along with double that many names. In the end, the current Chief Operating Officer, Kendal Frasier, landed the position. Frasier was raised on a diversified cattle and grain operation in south central Kansas. He is a graduate of Kansas State University. H then began his career as a farm broadcaster for WIBW Radio and Television before joining the staff at the Kansas Livestock Association as director of communications. He joined the staff of the National Cattlemen’s Association in 1995 and has held several staff leadership roles during his career with the Association. “As CEO, I will continue to focus on working to ensure we a implementing NCBA’s contributions to the industry Long Range Plan,” said Frasier. “We will also ensure that we are delivering on NCBA’s member-directed policy priorities and executing NCBA’s Strategic Plan. These documents are the roadmap for NCBA and by delivering on the promises, we will ensure success for NCBA, our members and our industry.” You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. ~ C.S. Lewis Shirley and I are getting ready to move again after about two years living in an apartment in West Des Moines. Previously, we lived four places in Adair County, Iowa for 54 years. We will soon be living in Ramsey Village near Drake University. We will be three blocks from our daughter’s office at Drake, two blocks to the Knapp Center for basketball and volleyball games, and one block to Drake Relays! We expect to be at the Village the rest of our lives. Shirley and I think Ramsey Village is the best kept secret in Des Moines. Our phone numbers will remain the same. I only have two jobs remaining; one, write for Livestock Plus as long as both Mike Sorensen and I are alive, and two, make the genetic decisions for the Angus cow herd I don’t own anymore as long as I am capable. The key is to keep company only with people who uplift you, whose presence calls forth your best. n

In Memory of Don Esslinger God received one of the good cowboys on April 4, 2016. Don Esslinger, my driver, my support, my motivator, my advisor, my helper, my kid’s second father, my business partner, and most of all, my friend. Don, rest in peace, you will be missed! ~ Mike Sorensen and Family Don J. Esslinger, son of John and Audrey (Loupee) Esslinger was born June 12, 1939 in Carroll, Iowa. He grew up on a farm in the Bayard area and graduated from Bayard High School in 1957. After graduation Don began to farm. On May 27, 1961 Don was united in marriage with Karen Clipperton in Panora, IA. From this union four children were born. Don and Karen moved to Perry for a short time where he worked as a hired man on a farm. They came back to Bayard and Don took over the family farm. He was a hardworking man and a loving husband and father. In 2000, Don retired from farming and they moved into town. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Bayard and Pheasants Forever.

Don was a hog supervisor at the Guthrie County Fair and served many years with the Guthrie County Pork Producers. Don enjoyed fishing and camping; he was a camp host at Springbrook State Park. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and was involved in showing cattle. Of all these things, Don loved to watch every sport his grandchildren participated in. In February of 2016 Don was diagnosed with cancer; he then moved into hospice care. He died on April 4, 2016 at Hawkeye Care Center in Carroll at the age of 76 years, 9 months and 23 days. Preceding him in death are his parents John and Audrey Esslinger; granddaughter Brianna Esslinger; sister Arielle Knopp; sisterin-law Jeri Fitzsimmons and brother-in-law Dick Andersen. Don is survived by his loving wife Karen Esslinger of 54 years; children Khristi (Brian) Woody of Monroe, Kathy (Mike) Keuning of Monroe, Doug Esslinger of Bayard and Dennis (finance Nicole) Esslinger of Bayard; grandchildren Kaylee Woody of Monroe, Jacob Woody of Monroe, Colton Keuning of Monroe, Chase Keuning of Monroe, Jacey Esslinger of Ames, Jorrie Esslinger of Coon Rapids, Bryce Esslinger of Coon Rapids, Olivia Esslinger of Coon Rapids, Bailey Esslinger of Bayard, Kaitlyn Esslinger of Bayard, Cooper Esslinger of Bayard, Peyton Betts of Bayard and Mason Betts of Bayard; step sister Ellen (Roger) Fischer of Thorp, WA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

“AGRICULTURE is the most healthful, most useful and most noble employment of men.” ~ George Washington I love this quote! Agriculture is such an amazing industry that receives a bad reputation from those that really have no idea what really happens on our farms/ranches. I know every chance I get I try to promote the agricultural industry, and I hope you all jump on the chance to educate anyone that is willing to listen! Well, our family is in full blown show pig mode, as I am sure many families are, as well as sports! I’m so excited about these next couple months for Tucker and Taylor to start the Iowa Swine Jackpot Series!! Also, its been a little different this year with Tucker in 4-H, he gets to show for the first time at the Adair County Fair! I get a little emotional about 4-H in general, it was an incredible experience for me as a kid and I’m so pumped Tuck is excited about it as well! I’m wishing all of our livestock families so much luck on the show road and as you are looking for the next “great one” out of this year’s calf crop! Please travel safe and HAVE FUN with your families! Be sure to throw your LPI in the truck when you are traveling this summer, you never know when there might be a great stop to look at calves!! Check out the Iowa and Illinois Show Cattle Producer MAPS! If you are a producer and want to be on the map, just contact me and I’ll be

glad to help! Heidi Sorensen Rohrig 661.900.6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com www.livestockplusinc.com I LOVE this quote my friend, Jennifer Carrico, shared on social media the other day! “Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
