MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings! Shall we say that the weather is somewhat like a yo-yo. I’m going out on a limb here and saying that moderation would be really nice, like around 30 degrees and very little moisture until mid-March then straighten up, rain a little, and then turn off nice. Who’s with me on that? I have been going to Denver for lots of years to attend the National Western Stock Show, and this would be the first year in lots of years that Dixie and I didn’t have our row captains Ross and Sandy. We really missed their company. As we wandered around, looking for a place to eat on the hill, we happened to pass by the Smoke House. That was the choice that came after seeing there were tables and chairs. We decided we could kill two birds with one stone, food and rest. While in line we had confirmation from Chuck Groves that this place is the best bang for the buck. As far as I can see, this place is by far the best bang for the food buck while at the National Western Stock Show. Their menu gives these choices; one meat and two sides or two

meats and two sides. Meats were brisket, sausage, and chicken. Sides were baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, and western corn. My friend Chuck asked me, what is western corn? My comment back was, pretty much looks like Iowa corn to me and guess what, tasted like Iowa corn too. I think they were trying to trick folks. Well, to say the least, the food was darn good and the resting place really hit the spot. When you’re at the Stock Show in 2017 give it a try. Next on the National Western Stock Show run was the National Western Club. Joe Boddicker, Dixie, and myself had one of the better meals while in Denver at the National Western Club. I’m not sure what this club cost to be a part of, but the food is fit for the most elite. Prime rib, scallopped potatoes, and green beans. A meal fit for the best of us. Best of all was the desert. They claim they have 11 kinds of homemade pies. I personally chose the pecan pie with a hit of whipped cream and believe me it was deadly. Dixie had the cherry crisp and was equally impressed. Joe dove into a piece of coconut cream pie and it took him a while to come up for air. I’m thinking he thought it was ok. The only thing wrong with this place is I think everybody has figured out that it is good, and they all want to eat at the same time. A packed house but a really great meal. Dixie and I want to send out a special thank you to Virgil Lovell, Ankony Angus, and Joe Boddicker for their hospitality while in Denver for the

FYI

Iowa Beef Expo and Mindy Campfield by Carrie Horman

Iowa is home to one of the nation’s premier seedstock events – the Iowa Beef Expo. Iowa was the first to develop an event such as this. It was spearheaded by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council. Now in its 40th year anniversary since starting in 1977, the Iowa beef Expo still continues to hold fast to its reputation for offering the largest selection of the highest quality seedstock available for sale in one place at one time. Although many state’s beef expos have begun since Iowa, the Iowa Beef Expo continues to be the model of which many have adopted.

Held every year in February at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, the original purpose of the Expo was to consolidate the state’s breed association shows and sales of breeding into a short time span and into one location. This original plan developed into what is now a leading national seedstock event. This event provides the purebred and commercial cattlemen and women the opportunity to view and purchase the most elite genetics in the nation. With the initial offering of 500 bulls and females in 1977, consignment numbers consistently grew to 1000 head, boasting gross sale totals of well over $1.5 million each year. Over the years, the Iowa Beef Expo has evolved into an eight day event to accommodate the many beef breed participants and more than 40,000 attendees to the annual event. It is not unusual for cattlemen and women from over 20 states to consign their top genetics to one of the breed sales held during the week long extravaganza. Cattle are typically sold into more than 25 states plus several foreign provinces. What makes this event different than other seedstock events of its kind? The Iowa Beef Breeds Council, which consists of two representatives from each breed, allows each breed to manage their sale in how they see fit. The breeds are allowed to hire a sale manager or manage their breed sale as a committee. This is in effort for each breed to individualize themselves from the other breeds being represented at the Iowa Beef Expo. The Iowa Beef also hosts the largest cattle only judging contest with over 500 contestants. The Iowa Beef Expo offers cattlemen and women with more than just the opportunity to select bulls and females from the nation’s finest breeding programs. An expanded commercial tradeshow is a nostalgic part of the Iowa beef Expo. The tradeshow features a wide array of the finest livestock equipment, genetic companies and livestock services available for all sectors of the beef industry.

Livestock Plus Inc.

For the young cattlemen and women of tomorrow, the Iowa Beef Expo hosts one of the largest junior steer and heifer shows in the last weekend of the event. The junior show has expanded into over 1,200 head exhibited from only Iowa resident young cattlemen and women participants. With the help of Sunglo and Sullivan Supply, the junior event has expanded its activities to adding a showmanship, photography, arts and crafts, and fitting contests. So who is behind the scene that holds this spectacular event together? She goes by the name of Mindy Campfield. Mindy grew up in southwest Iowa near Treynor on a commercial cow/ calf operation with a small feedlot From left to right: Marty Lewis – IBBC President, and row crop farm. Mallory Bormann, Kaitlyn Lewis, Mindy Campfield, Mindy and her husSarah Vickland, Jenny Studer and band, Rob, and their Dennis Larson – IBBC Past President. two boys, Rowdy (6) and Lucky (2) now reside in outside of Runnells, Iowa. Rob and Mindy do row crop farming and their boys enjoy showing lambs and pigs. That is until they get a little older to handle a calf! Mindy has overseen the Iowa Beef Expo since 1999 under the direction of Monte Strathe, who was the President of the Iowa Beef Breeds Council at the time. Mindy would like to give a big shout out to Monte for taking her under his wing and providing her with the direction and guidance he did. In Mindy’s first three years of heading up the event, she did not have the same layout of the barns due to construction on the fairgrounds. This posed as a huge challenge that she has now worked through and feels confident in the design of everything at the Iowa Beef Expo. In Mindy’s fourth year, they had a record of over 1,500 head entered for the junior show and the winter’s largest snow storm hit that Friday. One would think that would steer people away from coming, no not at all! In 2003, the Iowa Beef Expo set a record of 1,358 head exhibited by the young cattlemen and women. Mindy has seen it all in her going on 17th year of facilitating the Iowa Beef Expo. Everything from not having the padlock keys to open the out door on the sale ring when a sale had started to setting a record of the high selling female at $30,000 last year. She feels pretty fortunate to be able to work with great people on the Iowa Beef Breed Council that are always open to new ideas and concepts to keep the event moving forward with the times. The deep commitment and genuine interest of Iowa’s seedstock producers and beef breeds associations have made the Iowa Beef Expo a vital part of the state’s purebred industry. Mindy says she wouldn’t have any other lifestyle for their children to grow up in the cattle and agricultural industries. “Cattle family is cattle From left to right: Brook Moore, family; you can’t go very Rowdy Campfield, Megan Moore, far and not run into someClaire Petzenhauser & Lucky Campfield one that you know from the industry!” n

REG: 1451718 DOB: 3/13/11 Cowby Cut X Meado-West Persuasion We are excited to offer this proven herd sire. Yosemite has done a tremendous job for us. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to add this proven sire to your bull power. Yosemite has a great disposition and has never failed us in getting the job done! His sons are always highlights in our bull sale. His females are leaving a mark in the pasture. We ran a blind test comparing Yosemite to the highest accuracy EPD bull in the breed in 2013. The offspring were ran in a feedlot together. When they were harvested, the results showed Yosemite progeny out performing the others in weaning and yearling weights as well as ribeye area.

FYI

Nebraska Cattlmen’s Classic and Ronette K. Bush-Heinrich by Carrie Horman

The Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic is a state wide event that is looked forward to by so many Nebraskans. February 13 – 21, 2016 marks the 25th Anniversary for the week-long event held in Kearney, Nebraska. What began as a dream of the Kearney Businessmen and the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association to showcase the beef industry of Nebraska in 1990, has grown into the winter event for the entire family. The inaugural event was first held in 1992 that included the 11 cattle breed shows and sales, the commercial trade show and the junior show for the youth of Nebraska’s tomorrow. The Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic has grown into an event that includes: the Ranch Rodeo, Ranch Horse Competition, Ranch Horse Sale, Commercial Pen of 5 Heifer Sale, Fancy Open Heifer Sale, Prospect Steer Sale, The Royal Ice Embryo Sale, Beef Judging Contest, Feedlot Tours, Scholarship Programs, Classic FFA Day, Elementary School Tours, Steak Cook-Off and Dog Trials. The tradeshow is geared towards all cattlemen in the beef industry and serves as a family winter event. There have been several cattle consignors, buyers, commercial exhibitors, volunteers and team members who have been a part of the event all 25 years. The lady that has been there from the beginning behind the scenes is Ronette K. Bush-Heinrich. Ronette was approached by Keith Stafford to volunteer for the event in the Livestock Office with Mary Clifton. Bob Volk of Arlington, Nebraska was the Director at the time and the following year, Ronette was hired as the Assistant Manager. She worked under the direction of Bob for five years before becoming the Director of the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. She has managed the Classic for the past 18 years alongside of Mary Clifton who is still in charge of the Livestock Office. Ronette is originally from south of Franklin, Nebraska on the Nebraska/Kansas line where they had a diversified

Ronette & Cody Heinrich

grain and livestock farm. She grew up showing cattle and eventually went on to graduate from University Ralston, Railen & Ronette Heinrch of Nebraska-Lincoln with her degree in Business Administration. Ronette and her husband, Cody,

along with their two daughters reside in Kearney, Nebraska. Railen is an Animal Science major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is also on the livestock judging team. Ralston is a sophomore in high school involved in 4-H, FFA and the Nebraska Junior Hereford Association. The girls enjoy showing steers and registered Hereford cattle. Ronette and her team try to always keep the event fresh with new ideas to keep everyone involved. Not only does the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic host more events than many events of its kind, they travel to six locations across the state of Nebraska in January with the “Classic on the Road” promotions. This gives the team an opportunity to go out and meet the producers and friends of the industry to promote the event in their back yard. What makes the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic stand out from other events of its competition is that Ronette spends many sleepless nights creating the sale

catalog for every breed sale that she manages herself. The sale catalog is designed so that every 2015 Sale Block at the Royal Ice Sale. Left: Auctioneer, Tracy Harl, an active participant in the Classic breed has its from the beginnig and all of its 25 years. Right: Ronette Heinrich own look, but if you are looking for a Red Angus female and a Hereford bull you just need one catalog to look for all breeds. Ronette says what keeps her going are the people. She loves working with the people and loves seeing families that grow with the event. It has been tremendous to watch several families’ transition into having three generations currently involved in the Classic. “An Event for Cattlemen of All Ages” is what the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic team likes to use and tries to stay to that. They are constantly looking to add more educational events for the youth and better ways to market and advertise the top genetics that are brought by the producers of Nebraska for the breed sales. A year ago, the Classic Board of Directors decided the way they wanted to celebrate the 25th Anniversary was to invest in the “future leaders in the Beef Industry” with $25,000 in scholarships. The Board felt that fancy decorations and ribbons would all fade after the 25th Anniversary was over, but the impact of investing $25,000 into our youth would be felt for years to come. The 25th Anniversary Scholarships will be presented on Saturday, February 20th at 7:00 PM during the 25th Anniversary special presentations. “Working hard and always remembering to make every situation as fair as possible for everyone involved” is a philosophy that Ronette and her incredible team live by in the planning and facilitating the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. They would like to thank all the cattlemen who have consigned to the 25th Anniversary Celebration. The line-up of bulls, bred heifers, fancy open heifers and steers looks tremendous. Make sure and study all the sale features at the Classic! n
