Getting Calves Started Right by Kirk Steirwalt

There are many steps to take when getting your calves started. All calves are different and some may take to things more quickly while others may require a little bit more work. Although there lots of things to consider when starting a calf, here are some tips on weaning nutrition we like to do at our farm that may help you at yours. Weaning Nutrition • All of our calves are weaned on Purina® Precon® Starter Complete because it is high in fiber and is medicated to help with the stress of weaning.

Purina Supplements by Dr. Chad Zehnder, Cattle Consultant Purina Animal Nutrition, cmzehnder@landolakes.com

Crop harvest is starting and the green is disappearing from our pastures, so our cattle attention needs to turn to supplementing the cow herd consuming a totally different set of forages than spring and summer. As cattle producer, we are “creatures of habit” and often choose the same supplementation strategies year after year without giving consideration to the uniqueness of each feeding season.

• After weaning we start blending the Precon® with Honor® Show Chow® Fitter’s Edge® or Full Range™ feed to start getting them moved over to a show feed ration. • Our calves are on all the full grass hay they want. • We also put a Purina® Stress Tub and salt block in with our calves because they seem to migrate to these during weaning. • We use only Cydectin® wormer every three months. We’ve found that this particular wormer gives us the best results and is the most forgiving on the hair and hide. • All of our calves get their follow-up booster shots as well as a shot of MULTIMIN® 90 to help with stress and to boost their immune system.

After cattle are transitioned through the weaning and starting process, cattle need to be fed on an individual basis targeting and keying on their specific needs whether performance or confirmation. In order to maximize your genetic potential good cattle deserve good feed! Good luck! n

Conventional poured tubs- Poured tubs provide energy, however, high palatability and moisture levels may make it difficult to modify intake. As pasture quantity decreases and cows’ nutrient needs increase, consumption may rise, resulting in increased costs. Cooked molasses or low moisture tubs- This supplement form can be economical because it is designed to prevent over-consumption on cows. The dense product form encourages cows to only eat small amounts throughout the day. The cows eat between 0.5 to 1.25 pounds per day when allowed free choice access to cooked tubs. In high requirement periods if cows are on poor forage, cows may not be able to get enough intake to meet their requirements.

Intake-Modified Poured Blocks- Poured blocks with intake modifiers control intake well, helping cows to only consume the levels they require. The difference is that products like Purina’s Accuration Block provide a total balanced supplement which allows cows to Hand-fed Grain Mixes- These rations work well in intensely man- consume additional calories to help them regain condition. The high labor inputs make this system difficult to manage on grazing systems and reduce the labor costs of feeding. These totalbalanced blocks can be a good option for producers that need to a larger scale or for longer feeding periods. bump condition in the fall or extend fall forage before bringing cows into winter facilities. Cubes and Cakes- These products are a hand-fed protein and energy source. Though cubes and cakes are typically economical There are many choices for nutrient delivery to your cow herd. To per unit of protein, it’s the eye of the feeder that controls the amount help make the right choice, contact your local Purina Feed Supplier fed to the cows. At times, cows can already be energy deficient or get additional information on pasture management and herd supbefore feeding is initiated. Cubes require extra labor. In addition, plementation at www.cattlenurtition.com n higher levels of shrink due to weather occur when fed directly on the ground. Controlling intake on aggressive cows and making sure timid cows get adequate supplement also are challenges for cube feeders.

Producers have several options for supplementing protein and mineral to their cows in the fall. Here are a few of those nutrient delivery systems, feeding strategies, benefits and drawbacks of each.

Liquid Supplements- Liquids commonly cost a little more than cubes. Liquid supplements without intake management ingredients must be monitored closely to avoid overconsumption. Wheelfeeders or pouring onto bales can also help manage intake, however, consumption levels will increase if forage quality or quantity is low. Using a product with intake management ingredients and making sure forage quantity is adequate will help avoid overconsumption. Intake-Modifying Meal Supplements- While this supplement is typically more expensive than liquids in cost/ton, when used properly, the cost tends to be comparable per cow per day. As with cubes or liquids, producers must manage meal supplements based on pasture or crop residue quality and quantity. Cows grazing inadequate forage will exceed their intake goals. Intake Modifying products may help reduce the cow to cow variation in intake that is seen in hand feeding systems.
