MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings, Hasn’t this weather been almost amazing? If we could get an inch of rain every other week for the next 6 weeks it would be awesome. Then, while I’m wishing, lets have minimal snow and ice this winter. Yes, I know we need some snow, just make it small quantities. Ok, my article this month is for you folks that think that all I, and the rest of the sale crew, do is go to sales, eat good steaks and socialize. The real story is the three to six hour drives between sales. Last weekend was 1,330 miles that included visiting and/or working 8 sales. With this kind of schedule, the only thing I can report on this month is McDonalds, Arby’s, Burger King, convenience stores, and pre-sale meals. Thank God for pre-sale meals this month!! First on this trail was Black Stone in Mineral Point

4

Livestock Plus Inc.

Wisconsin. They have a never miss pre-sale meal. It was brisket, cheesy potatoes, and dessert choices to please anyone. The next stop was the Scott/ Gotto sale. They have hospitality second to none. Then it was on to Bruhn’s totally amazing set up and hospitality. If you haven’t been to this sale, put it on your calendar for next year. You won’t be disappointed. Two more great stops was Riley Bros. Their meal was like a smorgusbord of brisket, several versions of potatoes, cowboy beans, and again more dessert than my little belly has room to sample. Then to Gaffney’s. The food started as soon as we got there and I’m not sure when they stopped serving. Val and her crew had an awesome chunk of roast/steak. I’m not sure how they prepared it, but it was deadly and again desserts and fixins that were off the chart. A big thank you goes out to all of these hosts, and to the ones that I/we haven’t been to yet. Thanks for taking care of all of the traveling sale crews we do appreciate it! It is sure my hope that sometime this next month we will be able to sit down in a great place have an adult beverage and a meal that is second to none. If we or any of our staff can help you find the next herd bull, great donor, or the next great show animal, please give us a call. Please keep our military and their families in your thoughts and prayers. God Bless

Fire Prevention and Management Tips During Harvest Clarke McGrath Extension Field Agronomist Iowa State University 712-215-2146 cvschwab@iastate.edu

Mark Hanna Extension Agricultural Engineer Iowa State University 515-294-0468 hmhanna@iastate.edu

AMES, Iowa – It’s always difficult to forecast weather, but if dry field conditions persist, potential for combine and field fires this fall could be a problem. All it takes is a single high-temperature source in the engine area, or an overheated bearing to ignite dry plant material. During harvest periods with increased fire potential, fires cause millions of dollars in property damage in Iowa, including loss of machinery, crops, and time. Injuries to farm workers and firefighters are also an unfortunate outcome in some instances. Modern, high-productivity combines are powerful machines; power means heat. Fire cannot start without heat and fuel. You cannot remove the heat from the engine, hydraulics, and other hardworking systems, but you can remove the fuel source by keeping your combine clean. Prevention tips: • Keep the machine clean, particularly around the engine and engine compartment. Use a high pressure washer or compressed air to remove caked-on oil, grease, and crop residue. • Check coolant and oil levels daily. • Check the pressurized oil supply line to the turbocharger for wear areas that rub and may start an oil leak. • Frequently blow leaves, chaff and plant material from the engine area with compressed air or a portable leaf blower. Doing this one last time at night is better than in the morning when dew may make it harder to blow residues off. • Remove plant materials wrapped on or near bearings, belts, or

22

Livestock Plus Inc.

other moving parts. • Examine exhaust or hot bearing surfaces. Repair leaking fuel or oil hoses, fittings or metal lines immediately. • Inspect and clean ledges or recessed areas near fuel tanks and lines. • Prior to fueling, wait 15 minutes to reduce the risk of a spill volatilizing and igniting. • Delay harvest when wind speeds exceed 30 mph and conditions are dry. Management tips: • In case of fire, call 911 first, and then attack with fire extinguishers if it is safe to do so. Try to fight from the “black,” the area already burned; fire attack from areas with combustibles (stalks for example) is much riskier. • Create lists of the 911 addresses for each of your field locations prior to harvest and have them easily accessible to family and farm employees. Many fire departments have GPS equipment onboard their apparatus to assist directing them to incidents. When an incident is called in with a 911 address, dispatch can more readily identify the incident location and relay this information to apparatus drivers. Precious time can be saved when apparatus are able to dispatch immediately with GPS guidance rather than having to double check maps and directions. • A fire can double in size in less than a minute. Burning embers blown downwind can spread a fire well beyond the control of your fire extinguishers in just seconds. Two ABC-type fire extinguishers are recommended: a smaller 10-pound unit in the cab and a larger 20-pound extinguisher at ground level on the combine. • Invert and shake the extinguishers once or twice a season to ensure machine vibrations don’t compact the powder inside. A shovel to throw dirt can also help. Create an emergency plan: Fires may start from plant materials that have smoldered unnoticed for 15 to 30 minutes or more. The ignition source for field fires may have been the earlier passing of a truck, tractor or combine. Flames aren’t apparent until additional oxygen is supplied, perhaps by a gust of wind. Harvest crews and neighbors may want to discuss a plan for emergency tillage of a fire break should that option become advisable. Keep in mind that personal safety is more important than property loss. Good luck and stay safe as we enter the harvest season. n

COMMENTARY

The Road Ahead in October for Cattle and Hogs by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade

A month ago we suggested to you that Cattle and Hog markets had softened and that many livestock veterans were still nervous about whether or not good times were ahead or behind them in the business. The facts since then? The United States Dollar has continued to new lows on the year and it is clear that the Trump administration and the Federal Reserve that is led by Janet Yellen are content to let the dollar fall. Furthermore, export data continues to knock it out of the park and the combination of a weak US Dollar and strong exports and sharply undervalued Beef and Pork Cutouts paves the way for better times ahead. The concern for many livestock operations should actually be for the generations and especially the grandchildren behind

46

Livestock Plus Inc.

them since continued shrinking of our purchasing power may leave everyone in the family having to work day and night to makes ends meet and make it tough to fund college educations. We have to hope that the Trump agenda gets enacted and that it is successful for economic growth without causing inflation to run away. The Cattle business is clearly at an inflection point since Cattle were pulled forward so hard the first half of this year that old timers smell trouble down the road and even a shortage of Cattle before the year is out. The Fat Cattle markets looked like they were going break par or ‘100’ per cwt a few times, but each time down below 105 on the Board the market has been defended by the market. You may recall a few years ago when Feeder Cattle contracts on the Board were at massive discounts to the front months and many folks in the industry thought the Board was wrong and should not be a tool for hedging and trade. The cash market ended up following the lead of those deferred contracts and the cash Feeder markets went over the cliff, so when all was said and done the Board was right after all. This time we have the opposite and that is very little discount on the deferred discount on the Feeder deferred contracts. On the Fat Cattle side we have solid premiums on the deferred Cattle contracts and thus we should trust that the deferred Fats and Feeders sense higher prices and thus good times ahead. It is quite possible that at the end of this year we look back and see that ‘Placements’ came down as fast as they went up in the first half of the year. Don’t just be bullish Cattle and Beef just because of that great commercial where Sam Elliot does the powerful voice over and say ‘Beef, it’s what’s for dinner’. But instead believe in your Cattle business because it is an undervalued industry on the ground at the ranch level right now for all of the reasons up above. While the Cattle markets have based out and held their ground the last month the Hog markets cannot say the same. The Hog markets have come down over 10% and the famous Belly Cuts that Bacon is derived from have crashed and fallen over 50%. However, Hog producers have two things going for them. One, Bacon demand is likely to stay buoyant the more and more folks continue to use it on hamburgers and other food menus. Secondly, Hogs have historically run at 30 to 40% discount to Cattle prices and if there is another global turn down some day then the demand for Pork could move up sharply as an alternative cheaper protein. Global discussions always swing back to China and that country is still managing to double or triple the

economic numbers and statistics of our own United States. Therefore, Hog producers also have reason to continue to expand their operations. Bottom line? There are over 200 people born every 60 seconds, or 280,000 new births every day around the world to add to the existing world population* of over 7 billion people and more than 5 billion will enjoy beef and pork. If you are a bona-fide livestock producer and would like to receive on a complimentary basis for 45 days my daily and weekend ‘Livestock Report’ that includes Fat and Feeder Cattle Valuations, and Lean Hog valuations, as well as Beef and Pork cutout valuations from my office here at Fox Group [clearing through RJ Obrien] here at the Chicago Board of Trade then please call Ms. Michelle White at 312.756.0931 and let her know. And remember, hedging livestock with Chicago Board Cattle or Hog futures or the purchase and sale of grain, energy or financial future or option contracts still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt, or any other holdings they might have. Always consult with your most trusted advisors before taking on risk, whether the intent is hedging or not. n

Tractor Trail Mix by Cristen Clark

Author of the blog; FOOD & SWINE

If you are a member of my family or have ever ridden along during harvest, you know about Tractor Trail Mix. I’m not usually one to post recipes that are THIS STINKIN’ EASY on my blog, but this one is a rite of passage. This mix is in the cab of every tractor and an XXL stash is in the combine. Tractor Trail Mix is easy to throw together and lasts well in the containers. It keeps antsy kids from being to distracting when you’re hammering down in the middle of harvest. My kids pick all of the M&M’s out, my sister dodges all of the candy corn and my Dad and I like the peanuts. There’s a little bit for everyone! (Though I do get fussy when there are not extra peanut butter M&M’s in my jar.) Feel free to add raisins, dried cherries, Hot Tamales (ask my sister about that, it is her recommendation), chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, almonds and anything else you can think of! Tractor Trail Mix by: Cristen & Tanna & Ceil 1 jar dry roasted peanuts 1 jar honey roasted peanuts 1 small bag candy corn (omit if you desire) 1 regular bag regular M&M’s 1 regular bag peanut M&M’s 1 regular bag peanut butter M&M’s 1 regular bag Reese’s Pieces Pour into large mixing bowl, stir to combine. Portion in leftover peanut jars or plastic bags. Makes: roughly 5-6 regular peanut jars full. Enjoy! Have a happy and safe harvest! n

CARBOHYDRATE UTILIZATION

Phosphorus (P) is the second most commonly found mineral in the body, right behind calcium. 85% of P is located in bones and teeth. P is essen-

tial for milk secretion, bone mineralization/growth, energy metabolism, fatty acid transport, amino acid metabolism and protein synthesis. Minerals play a key role in energy metabolism. P is a major part of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is the body’s energy source for transport of organic substances and synthesizing of proteins and fats. The ATP producing systems are glycolysis, Krebs cycle (Citric acid cycle) and electron transport system (ETS). Magnesium (Mg) and Manganese (Mn) are used in the citric acid cycle to stabilize the enzymes and the ATP molecules. Without adequate levels of P, Mg and Mn, ATP production will greatly decrease, in turn hindering the animal’s performance. P also reacts with lipids to create the phospholipid bilayer of the cell membrane. Copper is part of cytochrome C oxidase that converts ADP (adenosine diphosphate) to ATP in the ETS. Glycolysis and the citric acid cycle break down glucose and produce NADH and FADH2 to provide electrons to the electron transport system. The electrons then pass through protein complexes

to produce ATP. Copper and Iron are also utilized during this process to continue the flow of electrons through the ETS. An animal with a well balanced supply of minerals will be better suited to create more efficient utilization of energy. This means that less overfeeding will take place with the same dietary outcome. “FOOD ENERGY UTILIZATION FROM CARBOHYDRATES IN ANIMALS” As science evolves and we gain a better understanding of animal physiology, one thing becomes painfully obvious, there is always more to learn.

CARBOHYDRATE UTILIZATION

Animal scientists and nutritionists have studied ruminant nutrition, tirelessly examining and researching the rumen complex. Studying how carbohydrates are fermented in the rumen and broken down in the abomassum before being released into the intestines for their absorption and ultimate utilization by the animal for all its functions and purposes. It is a very complex and important system but the story of carbohydrate digestion and utilization does not stop there. The primary function of carbohydrates in the animal is as a source of energy. To be utilized as a source of energy in the body, carbohydrates must first be degraded into simple sugars. Carbohydrates are classified into 3 groups; monosaccharides (simple sugars including triose, tetrose, pentose, hexose and heptose) oligosaccharides (disaccharides and trisaccharides) and polysaccharides (starch, glycogen, dextrins, gum, mucilage, inulin, cellulose, etc.). Monosaccharides cannot be hydrolyzed into simpler sugars. However, by the appropriate use of acid or enzymes, the higher saccharides can be hydrolyzed into simple sugars. In the body, the oligosaccharides and polysaccharides are converted to monosaccharides by enzymatic action in saliva (salivary amylase), from pancreatic secretions (pancreatic amylase), and from enzymes produced in the small intestine (i.e. disaccharidases and oligosaccharidases) inclusive of maltase, iso-maltase, lactase, sucrase and trehalase. Carbohydrate digestion into simple sugars does not end at the beginning of the small intestine. There are opportunities to improve the coefficient of digestion. The coefficient of digestion is a mea-

sure in difference between the amount of a nutrient ingested and the amount of the nutrient found in the urine and feces. The percentage of the nutrient being digested is called the digestion coefficient. Each of the 6 basic nutrients; proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and water has its own digestion coefficient. Starch, which occurs abundantly in grains, is generally the main source of carbohydrates in production animal diets. Glycogen, another source of carbohydrate is also found in corn and sorghum. Both starch and glycogen are polymers of glucose.

2

www.nutechbiosciences.com

www.livestockplusinc.com

67

CARBOHYDRATE UTILIZATION Starch is made up of two types of molecules. A linear polymer called amylase and a branched polymer called amylopectin. Glycogen is made up of a branched polymer very similar to amylopectin. Amylose is a linear polymer of glucopyranose units joined by an alpha linkage at the first and forth carbon atoms (referred to as a 1,4 linkage). The molecular weight of Amylose varies from 150,000 to 600,000 Daltons indicating that there are approximately 1000 to 4000 glucose units per molecule. Amylopectin from starch is a glycogen polymer held together by two types of alpha linkages, a 1,4 glucopyranose linkage and a 1,6 glucopyranose linkage. The 1,4 linkage forms a straight chain while the 1,6 linkages occur on the straight chain at points where one straight chain branches from another. The molecular weight of Amylopectin varies from about one to six million Daltons. The starch found in corn is composed of approximately 27% amylose and 73% amylopectin. The amylopectin fraction contains 96% 1,4 linkages and 4% 1,6 linkages. In order to maximize the energy contained in carbohydrates, it is important that complete digestion to the monosaccharide stage be accomplished in the gastrointestinal tract. Otherwise, undigested residues will be excreted in the feces and lost. Any improvement that can be made in the efficiency of digestion of carbohydrates, the major source of energy in feed is of real economic and nutritional importance. To understand the process of improving the digestion coefficient of carbohydrates it is important to look at the mechanism of how carbohydrates are broken down in the digestive system. Disaccharidase enzymatic activity at the mucosal surface defining the lumen of the small intestine, as distinguished from tissue uptake, can be affected directly through the proper administration of amino acid chelates. These enzymes help break apart the very large molecules of amylose and amylopectin into simple sugars of size that can be absorbed across the intestinal wall (molecular weights of less than 1,000 to 1,500 Daltons). Disaccharide digestive activity in the intestinal tract begins in the distal duodenum and is maximal in the jejunum and continues throughout the proximal ileum. Disaccharide hydrolysis does not occur in the lumen per se but in or at the surface of the mucosal cells. Secretion of disaccharidase

enzymes to the mucosal cells are from the Brunner’s glands of the duodenum and the glands of Lieberkuhn both of which are located in the mucous or sub mucous layer of the duodenum or jejunum portions of the small intestine. Chelated minerals may be added to the diet to improve disaccharide activity. The minerals are taken into the mucosal cells lining the small intestine where they are utilized to facilitate the production and activity of disaccharidase enzymes such as maltases, sucrase and lactase. These enzymes promote hydrolysis of disaccharides resulting from degradation of more complex carbohydrates or of sucrose and lactose into simple sugars or monosaccharides for absorption into the intestinal tract. Amino acid chelates are stable and are absorbed intact through the intestinal tract via an active dipeptide transport system. When properly administered, such chelates can affect disaccharidase production and disaccharide hydrolysis at the brush border membrane of the mucosal cells of the small intestine while still in the lumen.

Examples 46 dairy cows fed ration of corn silage, alfalfa hay, and wheat. Contained, on a percent by weight basis, 15.7% carbohydrate, 1.76% fat and 9.05% protein. The average daily carbohydrate consumption calculated at 3.92 kilograms and the carbohydrate digestion coefficient was determined to be 8.76%. The group was split into 2 groups of 23 head each. One group received ration fortified with iron,

CARBOHYDRATE UTILIZATION can accomplish our goal of increasing the coefficient of digestion of carbohydrates. The examples show that we can have a real impact on the coefficient of digestion, by as much as 50%. This is of tremendous economic importance and should be carefully considered when choosing an organic trace mineral.

zinc, copper, manganese and cobalt. One group given an inorganic form of these minerals the other given amino acid chelated forms. After 221 days the carbohydrate digestion coefficients were remeasured. The inorganic group was re-measured to be unchanged at 8.76% while the carbohydrate digestion coefficient of the chelated group was calculated at 13.67%, an improvement of 56% 15 swine showed a 57% increase in the digestion coefficient of carbohydrates. 1000 broiler chicks showed a 57% increase in digestion coefficient. 200 turkeys showed a 55% increase in the digestion coefficient of carbohydrates.

Cow in Western Kansas on NuTech Amino Acid Chelates.

Discussion: Cow on commercial mineral with added metal proteinates in South Dakota.

As you can see from the chemistry described above and the examples of the effectiveness of such chemistry there is a great deal to be gained by incorporating NuTech Amino Acid Chelated Minerals into animal feeds. By providing the necessary minerals in a readily bio-available form one can make a significant impact on the coefficient of digestion of carbohydrates. By helping to facilitate the digestion of carbohydrates into simple sugars and by maintaining and enhancing the natural enzymatic activity of the animal through the administration of appropriate minerals needed for such digestive activity. We

NuTech continues to bring cutting edge research and technology to the livestock sector. Use Nutech chelates in your livestock production system and reap the benefits provided by the most scientifically advanced organic minerals available. The photos above show how significant a mineral program can be in regards to carbohydrate utilization. COMMENTARY

Cody’s Column by Cody Crum

Adversity - unfavorable fortune or fate; a condition marked by misfortune, calamity, or distress. If I had one word to describe what our country has been through over the past few months, adversity would probably be it. Many people in this nation have been put through some tough times recently due to some extreme conditions mother nature has thrown our way. It absolutely blows my mind at how resilient our farmers and ranchers have been through these times. We’ve had horrendous fires that have burned thousands of acres, droughts that ruined crops and forced ranchers to sell their livestock, and hurricanes that have drowned out more pasture land that I would care to count. You know what amazes me the most? I’ve seen the interviews and have talked to producers involved in these disasters and I have not once heard a complaint. All I hear is, “I just want to thank the Lord for all He has blessed me with!” Doesn’t that just make you appreci-

ate the community we are in even more? I had a coach tell me one time, “take joy in adversity!” I imagine I probably shrugged it off and didn’t think much on what he was meaning. I probably thought to myself, “yeah ok, be happy when bad things happen.” But I don’t think that was the true meaning behind his statement. What he meant was that things are going to happen in our lives that are completely unexpected, unpredicted and not at all what we planned. We have to take those things as they come and learn to move forward even through the tough times. We live in a world and culture that doesn’t understand this. Too many people expect that everything is supposed happen just the way they planned it. God didn’t design it that way. He wants us to rely on Him and on each other. That is the best part about our community of livestock producers, we work together. When our neighbor is affected we will go out of our way and do anything we can to help him out. Let’s continue to lead by example and show our young people the importance of trusting God and helping out a brother when in need. My prayers will continue to be with all of you affected by the extreme conditions. God bless you all, Cody

It’s my favorite time of year! Cool weather, sipping hot chocolate, looking at sale cattle, getting pigs ready for sales and my very favorite watching football … whether it’s my son’s 6th grade team, college or NFL!! I have to say watching my son might be a little harder on my nerves than the rest. I’m very proud to be a part of a very passionate group of parents/students in Creston Red, Black & White Teams, and cannot wait for them to all play together next year!! My baby is catching up to me, sometimes I’d like to stop time! A few weeks back, my husband, Matt, judged the Open Swine Show at Clay County Fair. Taylor, Treva and I tagged along to watch and got to experience a few Northwest Iowa treats! Taylor and I decided to start with SPUDNUTS, yep I had to ask a couple times to be sure I heard it right! I’m so glad we decided to start with something sweet! Holy buckets these little donuts melt in your mouth … absolutely delightful! This little tray was full, we inhaled them within a few steps! After our sugar rush (yep “mom of the year”) we had an amazing tenderloin as well! Thank you Greg Lear and crew for making us feel so welcome! I hope everyone is hitting all the great show cattle sales, please don’t hesitate to give us a call to help out with advertising needs! Give Livestock Plus, Inc. a “like” on Facebook as well to keep up on sales, pictures/videos of sale livestock! Please keep our entire nation and our military in your constant prayers, with so much devastation across our nation we as a livestock family need to stick together. Purebred Simmental ASA # 2941516

Calving EasE suprEmE.

He is sired by Duracell by Dream On and out of a daughter of Built Right by 3CMacho by Meyer 734. His dam was the Grand Champion Simmental female at the 2009 American Royal Show in Kansas City. We bred 14 first calf heifers to him the first year and never had to assist one of them. We bred a lot more this past spring. They are growing good and look good. There are hardly any purebred Simmental bulls that you can breed heifers to. He is very sound on his feet and legs. We are very fussy about this because there are getting more cattle that their back toes curl under and they can’t travel. You’ll love this bull because he has perfect conformation and is just the right size. Many of the bred heifers and cows carry his service.

Yardley Charisma sold to the Brad Cox Family she was Supreme Champion at the Oregon State Fair two years in a row, she won over 200 head.
