Greetings, I’m not sure why I start this article with a weather comment, but I guess I want you all to know what trials we are dealing with in my part of the country.

My negativity about weather has subsided. We have had moisture, we have had sunshine, and no tornados at our place (knock on wood), so we are just pretty happy at present. I’m hoping that this winter will be pretty uneventful as far as travel goes as well.

What a day on the road (August 24 to be exact) with my bride of 47 years and soon to be 48 years on September 5th. I know most of you will say, and you are correct, she is one great woman to have put up with me for 48 years.

We viewed 4 calf crops, 4 different locations, went shopping, had a freedom rock viewing along with photo session with a group of motorcycle folks, viewed another group of calves, and then landed in Bloomfield, Iowa.

Once we hit the motel room, we both said at the same time “want to eat in?” Surely there is someone that delivers. Well to the front desk I went and sure enough we have a place that delivers, “The Grain Bin Steakhouse.” I looked up the menu on the computer and I found out I could order, steaks, burgers, pork chops, and a host of appetizers. It wasn’t a big menu, but big enough.

I ordered an Iowa Chop, loaded sweet potato, and green beans. Dixie ordered a grilled chicken and spinach salad. I was fully expecting that my chop would be over cooked (as most food places do) and dried out, but it sounded good at the time. I had hope for an average one. Keep in mind this chop was cooked, then trucked across town to the motel and had plenty of time to get worse.

Thankfully, I got lucky! It was the best pork chop I have eaten in years. It was masterfully grilled to perfection, unbeliev-

ably seasoned, moist, with excellent flavor, and tender enough it would make a guy almost bark at the moon. The sweet potato was deadly loaded with brown sugar, butter, and the beans were great also. I was totally amazed. Dixie said her salad was great, as well. It had lots of chicken and fresh lettuce. So, after getting our supper down and enjoying every bite, I decided I needed to check this place out a little closer.

Back to the computer I went, Josh and Kelsey run the place on the square in downtown Bloomfield, Iowa. If they can make a pork chop, that most people ruin by over cooking it, ship it across town in a Styrofoam box, and make me happy, they are good, I mean really good. I will be darkening their door soon.

I’m guessing that they are deadly on a ribeye and I think the atmosphere would unbelievable. It is an old brick building on the square.

Josh and Kelsey, this was a very pleasant surprise supper. Oh, and the computer tells me that maybe Kelsey’s parents run “Toot Toots” in Bethany, MO. That is another place that has been recommended very highly to me. So, “Toot Toots” and “The Grain Bin,” we will be seeing you soon.

Now, Sep. 12th, as I finish this article, and sale season is in full swing, my traveling partner (Dixie) and I are gearing up for a week tour to Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, and Iowa. Our staff is on the move if you need help finding that next great one give one of us a call.

For Pete’s Sake

In 2005 I signed up for a little internet fad. Within a couple of weeks I had 12 friends and was letting the world know what I was doing and what was on my mind- because everyone was so interested, right? Pretty soon a dozen friends turned to 1400 and I’d find myself driving down the road, checking in on what everyone was doing and how they were feeling. I’d find myself having coffee and flipping my finger across my phone screen as I scrolled through hours of pretty much nothing. Sure, I’d get amused at a few videos or posts here and there, what a great reason to keep this little app around!

“The internet will be the end of us all!” I’d hear dad say as I’d chuckle at another video or see another post. But then it hit me, I was getting ready to cut another chord in my life and I didn’t want him to see me glued to my phone. I think I was addicted to that blue logo.

So I deleted it. And..... I’m not going back. I cut two chords in the last month or two and I feel like I did one for the other. One that went from my wife to a very special little boy and one that I think was wrapped around me way too tight. I’ve swapped them out and am giving my time to something deserving, and not a little blue logo. I never saw my Dad glued to his phone. He prefers sale catalogs and plat books. Maybe if he would have had been glued to his phone a little more, I wouldn’t have got so many whippings! Haha, who am I kidding? That was mom’s job- and I don’t believe we are going to be breaking that tradition in this house, either. n

The state fair has come and gone, school has started and we are hearing talk of good crops in the field as farmers start to prepare for harvest. Farmland prices for the month of August are staying steady on high quality land. The USDA crop report came out this month and the next week we saw commodity prices drop. I have many people asking about terminating leases before September 1st deadline.

I have also had conversations with bankers that have made the statement that most of their clients have done better in 2018. There is a lot of talk politically about China and foreign trade. People are asking me if farmers are going bankrupt because of the tariffs. My opinion is “no” farmers are not going bankrupt. China has lost 22% of the country’s pig herd due to the ASF outbreak. Most of our soybeans go to feed first.

I do think that politically we will see an end to the trade war prior to the presidential election. This has slowed demand for our soybean market. Results from the 51 auctions (5152 acres) this last month have the average for high quality ground at $8,894/acre and medium quality ground averaging $6,163/acre. Low quality ground is also trending steady at an average of $3,781/acre.

The situation brings to mind the saying ‘some cattle rustlers would complain whether they were hung with a new rope or an old one’. Let’s trust the futures on the Board and the sale barns in the north are visionary and end up smiling on all Cattlemen.

Why is all this relevant to Cattlemen and their families here in the Midwest? Look below to see the quoted comments by the Federal Reserve and you’ll see why it may be a better time to be in the Cattle business than one might think, yes even during a trade war that has not been resolved…..

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said “Consumer part of the economy is in solid shape’ [interpreted by us as folks are buying things and going out to Texas Roadhouse and other restaurants like Ruth Chris and Outback] Fed Chairman said “Household spending on solid footing” [interpreted by us as folks are still going to Walmart and Home Depot to buy ‘household items’ Fed Chairman said “Job market remains strong’ [interpreted by us husband and wife job-careers are safe to date and pork does not need bought over choice USDA beef.

Fed Chairman said ‘Lowered rates to provide ‘insurance’ against ongoing risk [interpreted by us as most would, meaning that you buy auto and homeowners insurance because you have to in case something goes terribly wrong on the road or in a storm, but not because you believe catastrophic events lie ahead’ Notice in the charts below that Texas Roadhouse stock has had a huge correction of almost 20% and has turned around is rallying back, as you would expect when you consider that you always have to wait by the peanut barrel for 20 minutes to get a table, regardless of the night of the week. You’ll also notice that the Feeder and Fat Cattle market had all of August and September to fall apart and not look back as the trade war with China intensified and yet it has not to date. If, by chance, Trade Team Trump cuts a bona fide trade deal with Japan and Mexico and or China then watch out above on the Cattle and Beef markets.

Don’t be fooled by several of the Choice Beef Primal cuts taking turns dropping every other day a this last month. The Beef Grinds have stayed strong for almost 2 months now, as have the top side cutouts.

Funny business this Cattle business is, as the Board is often blamed for nasty down moves and yet when it rallies and cash does not rally proportionately then the Board is ridiculed in credibility and the rallies are discounted. But remember what the Board contracts are in reality and that is "Market Report" continued on pg 30 a ‘futures’ contract and they often see into the ‘future’ what

Cattle Nutrition 101 When should you feed your animal?

Consistency is key when feeding both steers and heifers.

Typically, you will feed morning and night and want 12 hours between those feedings. During the summer hot weather can decrease appetite, so it is beneficial to feed early in the morning and late at night. Make sure you clean out any old feed immediately. A calf should be finishing what you have fed them in 30-40 minutes.

How long do I need to feed a supplement to see a change?

It can take 45-60 days to see a true change from nutrition.

There are products that are designed for “instant gratification” like using Vita Charge® Gel or Vita Charge Liquid Boost® to stimulate intake quickly during stress, however we recommend giving any supplement at least 30 days to start to see a long-term change.

What are trace minerals and why does your animal need them?

There are two classes of minerals, macro minerals and micro (trace) minerals. Macro minerals are needed in higher levels to meet your calf’s daily requirement. Trace minerals are needed in smaller amounts, but are still vitally important.

Trace minerals are needed to help boost immune system and keep your calf healthy. Trace minerals also promote healthy skin, hair and hooves. When looking at the mineral source it is important that you are feeding an organic or chelated source of minerals, as these are more digestible. How important is water?

Water is the most important nutrient to an animal. Water drives intake and is a key component of health. Your animals should always have access to abundant, clean water. In the winter and summer months it is also important to monitor water temperature.

How do you know what show feed or ration to pick?

With show cattle there are lots of different branded show feeds to pick from or you might decide to have your local feed mill create a ration. Every calf is different and feeding plans should be individualized. The best advice is to reach out to the person you bought your calf from, your 4-H leader, FFA advisor or extension agent, or talk to a nutritionist to get a plan that will suit your animal and your goals.

Remember, no matter what show feed you choose, you still need to be feeding roughage (hay). Roughage is important to digestive health.

ICA Supports Packers and Stockyards Investigation The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association applauds the decision by USDA to utilize its authority via the Packers and Stockyards Division to investigate price changes experienced on both the boxed beef and live cattle side of the cattle market in the weeks following the Tyson Holcomb, KS plant fire on August 9.

As a grassroots organization, ICA takes the input of our members very seriously. Over the past several weeks, cattle producers have expressed concern that changes in the live cattle and boxed beef markets since the fire are unjustified. ICA

has been working on behalf of members across the state to provide market certainty via monitoring and fully supports an investigation.

“We recognize that there are market fundamentals at play,” says David Trowbridge, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association President, “But given the extreme effect the current market conditions are having on Iowa’s cattle industry, we believe it is in our members’ best interests to eliminate any doubts regarding the market reaction.”

The Packers and Stockyards Act was signed by President Harding in 1921 to

address concerns about anticompetitive activities among meat packers. The Act has been updated by Congress many times since then. Section 202 of the Act states that it is unlawful for packers to “Engage in or use any unfair, unjustly discriminatory, or deceptive practice or device,” or “[E]ngage in any course of business or do any act for the purpose or with the effect of manipulating or controlling prices, or of creating a monopoly in the acquisition of, buying, selling, or dealing in, any article, or of restraining commerce”.

$284,000 Raised for Ronald McDonald Houses “One hundred and twenty-one days ago, I had a kidney transplant. I didn’t know if I was ever going to attend the Iowa State Fair again, and I sure didn’t dream I’d be doing this,” said Brian Thill before choosing the champion steer in this year’s event.

“Our family knows the hidden costs that families go through when you have an ill one. I remember my wife and I having a discussion about [the fact that] it costs $42 to park, and those types of things can add up when you’re in the hospital,” said Thill.

“Thank God the Ronald McDonald House is there for those families.”

Thill, of Pleasantville, served as the official judge for the 37th annual Governor’s Charity Steer on August 10. The show and auction raised over $284,000 for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa in Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City.

The houses are located near hospitals and provide a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children. The Iowa Beef Industry Council and Iowa Cattlemen’s Association sponsor the annual steer

show and auction, which was hosted by Governor Kim Reynolds in the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion at the Iowa State Fair.

Since its inception in 1983, the Governor’s Charity Steer Show has raised over $3.8 million for the Ronald McDonald Houses of Iowa. This year’s event included 25 steers, the Iowa youth who raised them and celebrity show persons, including Governor Kim Reynolds.

Thill selected “Richard”, the steer raised by Makia Smith and shown by Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg, as this year’s “Judge’s Choice.” Richard was sponsored by the Crawford County Cattlemen’s Association and purchased by a coalition of Sioux County Businesses for $9,000, with an additional $1,000 support from the lieutenant governor and others.

The market value of the steer was also donated, bringing the total donation to $11,498.72.

The steer shown by Brian Moore, Former District 58 State Representative, was chosen by the crowd as People’s

Choice. “Straight Profit” was raised by Riley Miller, sponsored by the Jackson County Cattlemen, and purchased by Johnson Family Farms.

Justine Stevenson, representing the Seeds of Hope Foundation, earned the Showmanship Award from judge Terry Chapman of Tipton. Stevenson’s steer, “Seeds of Hope”, was raised by Brianna Wolfer of Albia and sponsored and purchased by the Monroe County Cattlemen and supporters, including the family of Chasen Stevenson.

Emcees for the event included Bob Quinn and Andy Peterson of WHO/WMT Radio and Michelle Rook of WNAX Radio.

The auctioneers were Phil Schooley of Bloomfield, Will Epperly of Dunlap, Russele Sleep of Bedford, and Jared Miller of Leon.

Catching bids in the ring were Tom Rooney of The Midwest Marketer; Mike Sorensen and Austin Brandt of Livestock Plus; and Jason Lekin from Tama Livestock Auction.

Attendees can then vote on the ICA policies, which may be ratified the next day at the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association’s annual meeting (open to all members).

The day will conclude with the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation fundraiser and auction. Tickets can be purchased just for the foundation dinner at iacattlemen.org.

On Friday, December 6, an invite-only breakfast will be held for ICA county leaders prior to the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association annual meeting and the Iowa Beef Industry Council’s annual meeting.

ICA seeking young cattle producers for leadership program In an on-going effort to build future leadership for both the Iowa cattle industry and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, ICA is taking applications for the 2020 Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program.

The application deadline is November 1, 2019 and can be downloaded from the ICA website, www.iacattlemen.org.

“With all of the issues facing agriculture today, it’s more important than ever that we equip young cattlemen and women with the knowledge and skills needed to lead our industry into the future,” says Matt Deppe, CEO of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. “The Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program will help participants better understand the industry and work towards solutions to the problems their generation will face.”

Those selected for the Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program (YCLP) will meet six times in the coming year on January 8-9, 2020, February 18-19, 2020, May 28-29, 2020, August 6-7, 2020, November 5-6, 2020 and December 3-4, 2020. They will tour beef production facilities, learn about trending cattle issues, enhance their leadership and communication skills, and play an active role in the legislative process. The program is free to all participants.

The application for YCLP asks potential participants to explain why they are interested in participating in the program, as well as explaining their goals and giving their vision for the future of the cattle industry. Preference will be given to current ICA members. If you have questions

The Way I See It

Fall sale season has kicked off and the time has come for living on the road and out of hotel rooms. To be completely honest, I have been looking forward to this ever since the last sale this past spring. Life on the road, seeing old familiar faces and meeting new people, looking at great cattle and yes, Sorensen has rubbed off on me because I do enjoy finding some great food as well!

A couple weeks ago, around the middle of September, I was invited to Iowa State University to speak to a group one evening.

I immediately jumped at the opportunity and was excited to get the chance. But then, I thought maybe I better ask just what kind of group I was going to be speaking to and what they wanted me to talk about. I was lined up to speak to the Collegiate Cattlemens Group. They wanted me to just keep the talk simple, chat with them about what I do, give them a little background about where I came from and how I got where I am today.

So after I gave them my version of who and how, I thought I would see if there were any questions. This is where it it got interesting in a good way! The first question I got is one that I will admit, made me chuckle a bit. When I thought about it, though, it was a fair question. I was asked if I practiced what I yelled and did around ringside in front of mirror before sales. The answer was simple, “No, I am just as surprised at what comes out of my mouth as everyone else is!” From there, questions got more industry related. They asked about my opinion on trends, swings

and fads in the livestock sales/marketing profession.

When I was asked for my thoughts on the pros and cons of a live auction compared to online sales, it definitely got their attention and mine as well. To me, I think you can argue both are better than the other until you’re blue in the face. That night, we got into that a little just a little bit, but in the end, it comes down to your bottom line. You need to use the best option to market your product efficiently, effectively and over wide customer base.

I would love to get into the details of our chat that night in this article, but I don’t think there is enough space allotted for that. But I will say, if you are interested in chatting with me about this or anything else just get ahold of me. Cody’s Column

It’s currently 1:00 AM and my baby boy is only a couple days old. I have officially joined the parenting world! Tamar and I are thrilled to announce that Cort Howard Crum was born on Friday, September 13th! That’s right, Friday the 13th and I don’t think there is anything unlucky about it. God has chosen to bless us with the most incredible gift and we are so proud to be Cort’s Mom and Dad. Cort is loved by so many already and we look forward to watching him grow.

Like I said, he was born on a Friday and guess what I had scheduled on Saturday? A sale. Fortunately, the sale was for some of my closest friends, the Stephens and Crane families.

They were more than understanding that I would not be able to make it. Well, on late Friday night, my wife informed me that she thought I needed to go work the sale. On Saturday morning, both grandmas and Aunt Taryn came to kick me out of the hospital, and I took off for the sale.

Luckily, I looked through the cattle a couple weeks earlier because I didn’t have any time that day to look between showing off pictures of our new little man. Cort decided to jump right in and he bought his first heifer before he was a day old!

I cannot begin to thank you all for the thoughts and prayers. Mom and baby are healthy and we are excited to start our little family. I will let you all know how the first month at home is next time. Best of luck to everyone over this fall sale season!

Happy Fall & football season!! I feel like all I do is drive, drive, and drive some more... thank goodness Miss Treva is game to ride a lot of hours with mama! Tuck is playing 8th grade football and finishing his last year of confirmation classes, Taylor has dance classes three days a week and it’s been hard to get homework worked in there when they head straight to the farm to work on show pigs! I’m currently trying to embrace the crazy and enjoy the little moments!

The last couple months have been a struggle. One of Tucker’s best friends and his family were attacked by an animal rights extremist that has no idea about the livestock industry. A video was taken of a young man attempting to load a gilt onto a trailer to head home from the Iowa State Fair. The gilt was in heat and didn’t want to load alone. The young man had attempted several different ways of loading her with a ramp and sort boards, with no success.

Well, there happened to be an animal rights activist on the fair grounds that took video of this young man and his struggle.

In the video, the activist captured one of his attempts to load the gilt using the whip, the tool we all use to guide the pigs in and out of the show ring. Of course, the activist insisted that it was animal abuse, which couldn’t be further from the truth.

The activist then posted the video on social media. A couple things to note is that he waited 10 days to post the video and before he posted it, he had been banned from the Iowa State Fair for LIFE for being threatening, belligerent and harassing to ISF officials. Now if this was such an important issue of animal abuse, why did he wait so long to “report” the incident?

I think what bothers me the most are the responses on social media from the non-livestock people that are downright horrifying. They are threatening this child’s life, claiming abuse when whips are used, etc. Those people have no idea of the processes of handling livestock. What is even more disturbing is if they care so much about animals and being humane, how can they care so little about a young person by threatening his life? The

alarming thing about this situation is that it could happen to any one of us or our kids.

Something I’d like to point out is that The Des Moines Register should be absolutely ashamed of themselves for printing an “investigative story” with only one point of view from an animal activist just looking for attention. I genuinely thought, in Iowa, our media would at least have the decency to get both sides of a story, not to mention, actually investigating the credibility of the “witness.” Maybe they would have uncovered the fact that this activist has had multiple arrests for a myriad of illegal activities. I know, I will no longer look to that poor excuse for a media outlet in Iowa for any kind of truths, knowing they only report one-sided stories.

As livestock producers, this hit home for us as a family. We had long, thoughtful discussions about the care of our livestock and took time to pray for our friends and their peace of minds.

The most frustrating is the fact that there is no way to logically reason with extreme activists. At the end of the day, we have to trust in God and His plan for us!
