MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com
Greetings, I know I will probably eat my words, but this weather for me has been just short of perfect. As I always say, if it would stay at 60 degrees, light to no wind, with short dash of moisture once a week, it would be perfect. It could stay that way until the 15th of March, then straighten up a little and that would be just fine with me. Once in a while, in my occupation, you just happen to land in the right place at the right time. It just so happened that I accomplished that back around the first of October. I landed in Macomb, IL and was checking into a motel when Max Stotz walked in. I asked if he had eaten. His response was that he was waiting on Mark McClintock and I was welcome to join them. I figured this was a pool of wisdom that I couldn’t pass up. On the way to the Red Ox I was informed that Katie Coyler from Live Auctions would also be joining us, just another addi-

tion to the pool of intelligence. After a brief argument on the location of the restaurant we landed at the Red Ox, I lost that location argument by the way, congrats Mark on your win!!. My first piece of wisdom was the adult beverage that Max suggested, Disaronno on the rocks with a dash of Sierra Mist. Maybe a little sweet for me, but my wife sure likes it. On the menu at the top of the steak and pork section, in bold print, Ugly Steak, Our Signature & Most Popular Steak. Just don’t sound like something you would order right? I did, I ordered an Ugly Filet. They were right, it ain’t pretty, but it sure makes up for it in flavor and seasoning. Every once in awhile you get one of those steaks that keep coming up in your memory bank, this is it. I will be back and Ugly sure tastes great. “The Red Ox” in Macomb Illinois, deadly awesome job on the steak. Thanks Max Stotz, Mark McClintock, and Katie Coyler for the enjoyable evening. Thanksgiving is on top of us, probably one of my favorite holidays. Lots of things come to mind but most of all I’m very thankful for my family, my Livestock Plus crew, and all of our Livestock Plus family, advertisers, buyers, and subscribers. Also our military past, present, and future. My thoughts and prayers go out to you for my freedom. We at Livestock respect and honor everything that you do for us. PLEASE VOTE!!! It’s your responsibility. God Bless,

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things
Remember the tea kettle: even though it’s up to its neck in hot water, it continues to sing.
Nobody who is somebody looks down on anybody. ~ Margaret Deland
Recently, I read press releases about an accident on U.S. 95 in Adams County, near the town of Council, Idaho. It happened Sunday evening on November 1st. The driver and passenger in a Subaru station wagon hit a bull and they had to be extracted from the vehicle and flown to a Boise hospital for treatment. Fortunately, by Thanksgiving they were both able to leave the hospital. The accident was in an Open Range area. Few details have been released publicly about what happened, but investigators said the injured bull was charging at first responders and passing vehicles and county deputies were about to kill it. At this point the two Adams County deputies got into a confrontation with Jack Yantis 62, owner of the bull as he arrived at the crash location six miles north of Council, carrying a rifle to shoot the bull. Few details have been. released to the public about what happened after Yantis arrived, but witnesses said shortly after Mr. Yantis arrived at the location the two deputies and Yantis himself all fired their weapons. Mr. Yantis died at the scene and one deputy suffered a minor injury, according to Idaho State Police, who is investigating the shooting at Adams County’s request. Both deputies have been placed on six months paid administrative leave. Donna Vantis was at the site when her husband was shot. She suffered a heart attack almost immediately. She and her husband were both close to death at the same moment, but she slowly recovered. He did not. After nine months investigation, this is what the prosecutors say happened: A car collided with Yantis’s bull in the early evening on U.S. 95 six miles north of Council, a town two hours north of Boise, in an area that is Open Range. The couple in the car were newlyweds, Jack and Doris Garner, who had to be removed from the car with “Jaws of Life.” They both were flown to a Boise hospital, but they were both able to leave the hospital before Thanksgiving Day. Local sheriff’s dispatcher called the bull owner Yantis asking him to come euthanize the bull. Deputies Statement: The bull became aggressive, so Roland and Wood said they became concerned that the trajectory of Yantis’s aim endangered others, so they told him to stop. But he pointed

More than 225 producers, veterinarians, and representatives from the AIP and Pharmaceutical Industries were in attendance at the Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle Symposium. COMMENTARY
The Shrinking Attention Span By Rachel Cutrer, Founder and CEO, Ranch House Designs, Inc.
34
As a mom of two young children, I recently read that it is possible to measure your child’s supposed attention span by their age. For example, my 5-year- old has an attention span of five minutes. However, as adults, I’m certain this figure eventually reaches a breaking point, because in my case, it feels like my attention span may be less than my daughters. In some cases, this includes looking at livestock messages. In today’s fast-paced world, a livestock producer literally has only a few seconds to capture the interest of prospective clients. CBS News recently reported that in the 1970’s the average consumer saw 500 advertising messages a day, but today’s figure is closer to 5,000, according to marketing professional Jay Walker-Smith. Of course, most of these advertising messages we see are for mainstream consumer products. However, today’s livestock producers are still flooded with information, pictures, emails and texts about livestock for sale. So how do you cut through the clutter to make your product stand out online? Cut to the Chase Be direct and brief. When writing a Facebook post, keep the text less than 5 lines and clearly state the main idea on the first line of text. When creating a print ad, the headline needs to get to the point and explain what your ad is all about immediately. Be Relevant By providing good information that people are actually interested in, you can build a following of people who actually seek out your information. Don’t post something on Facebook just to fill some imaginary quota of posting. If you are going to post, make it count. Be Different Do things differently to make your business stand out. One of the highest percent open rates on email blasts we sent out this year had the subject line of “My dad usually freaks out about now...” The content of that email shared that our online sale was now open. It explained how my father, who isn’t very tech savvy, always worries on the day of our online sales. We had over a 30 percent open rate on that email, which is a very good open rate. Be Authentic People love to see “the real you.” Livestock people also value real, un-photoshopped photos and raw content. Do a Facebook live from your barn one night —even if you are wearing dirty clothes from working all day. Snap some pictures of your cattle with your camera phone. It’s not necessary to break out a fancy DSLR camera to capture good photos for social media. Real, genuine posts are believable and let people know you are trustworthy. As livestock marketers, we should always respect the consumer’s preferences and time. Never spam. Never add people to your mailing list without permission. Strive to provide advertising materials that are timely, useful, and interesting to achieve the best success. n

A TRADITION IS BORN: TV dinners have Thanksgiving to thank. In 1953, someone at Swanson misjudged the number of frozen turkeys it would sell that Thanksgiving -- by 26 TONS! Some industrious soul came up with a brilliant plan: Why not slice up the meat and repackage with some trimmings on the side? Thus, the first TV dinner was born!

Livestock Plus Inc.
When cattle prices erratically head lower, it’s easy to take issue with reports of higher packer margins or retail beef prices that still seem relatively high. But in a volatile market, the segments along beef’s supply chain often see much above- or below-average returns. “A lot of our beef producers eat their own product,” notes Brent Eichar, senior vice president for the Certified Angus Beef ® brand. “So at times there is a bit of a disconnect over how we got from $1.60 [per hundredweight] cattle last year to $14.99 [per pound] ribeye steak.” Basic beef math explains part of that, as the first processing step leaves 35% of the live weight behind, and breaking down into retail cuts leaves half of what is left, Eichar explains: “Only 30% to 35% of the live weight is actually beef.” Packers and retailers typically work on narrow margins. “They pay their meat cutters, staff, overhead – nobody in this industry is getting entirely rich,” he says. Still, there are ways for producers to move toward greater profitability by keeping all segments of the supply chain in mind, say Eichar and Kansas State University economist Ted Schroeder. The premiums for top-quality cattle don’t just drop out of thin air. They’re earned at every point in beef production, and Schroeder says they begin at the consumer level. “In producing, processing, marketing, positioning and putting that product in the consumer’s hands – all those activities take investment and scrutiny to make sure there is integrity throughout the value chain,” he says. Costs vary for each segment. As the retailers allocate room in the meat case for branded products, processors sort and package to ensure the product moves into the right channels. “It takes focus on the ranch, too,” Schroeder points out, noting investments in genetics and management. “We have to have price signaling going on,” he says, “or someone would not have the incentive to invest. But the transmissions will always reflect some of the costs involved in that additional activity at each level.” That’s why the wholesale premiums for higher quality cattle do not match the Choice-Select spread, for example. “You will never have the consumer’s premium equal to the producer’s premium, but you would sure expect a percentage of it and that is indeed what we see,” he says. Eichar says cattlemen and those who process and sell their products have a lot in common. “Day to day, it comes down to passion and doing the right thing to feed families, to make a living and generate a profit so they can grow their businesses,” he says. With so much common ground, everyone along the beef supply chain is a partner, the economist and branded beef leader agree. Thanks to Hannah Johlman, Certified Angus Beef , Wooster, Ohio for this thoughtful report. n

Livestock Plus Inc.
It is with great pleasure that I write my first article for Livestock Plus, Inc. For those of you who I have not yet met, at some point in my travels, I grew up on a Purebred Hereford operation in Rushville, IL. As the youngest of 3, my parents, Wayne and Kay Crum, started me in the Hereford business at an extremely young age, as my sister, Dawn (Ihry) and brother Curt were already traveling the show circuit. Throughout high school, I continued the family tradition of showing and raising Hereford cattle and had the opportunity to attend numerous state preview shows as well as Junior National Hereford Expos. After high school, I attended the University of Northwestern in St. Paul, MN where I majored in agri-business. Due to my intense study habits, I did not have much time for many activities outside of school work…*ahem*…but I did manage to find the time to play football and run track all four years of college. Now, for those of you who have met me, you might notice I am not the biggest or stoutest person on the block…but the Good Lord blessed me with two things in regards to athletic abilities: 1. Speed and 2. The ability to kick a football between two goal posts. I most definitely enjoyed my time in school and have some of life’s greatest memories and friends as a result of playing football for the Eagles. Without a doubt, the greatest “achievement” I have made in my life took place this past May when I married my best friend and the love of my life, Tamar (Adcock). Tamar also grew up showing Hereford cattle in Illinois and across the country. Even though she ALWAYS beat me throughout the years, we managed to become close friends and stay in touch throughout high school, college, and the years following. Despite (or maybe in spite of…ha!), many of our Hereford family’s “advice,” we did not start dating until LONG after everyone thought we should have. As much as I hate to admit it, “they” (“they” know who “they” are) were right all along! Regardless, my wife and I are a true testament to God’s plan as there really is no other reason that after all these years we ended up on the same path. I am blessed with the greatest wife I could have asked for and we are both very excited for what He holds for our future. We’ve got a tough road to hoe for the next couple years, as she is working on her Ph.D. in Beef Cattle Genomics under Dr. Jerry Taylor at the University of Missouri. This means, we get to do the long distance thing for just a while longer, as she goes to school and works in Columbia, MO during the week and travels home to our farm in Rushville, IL on the weekends. Any prayers for her sanity as she tries to juggle school, two houses, cows, and me…I am sure would be greatly appreciated. I am more than excited to get started on this new adventure with Livestock Plus, Inc. I feel so very humbled and honored that Mike sought me out for such a position and hope I can do him and my customers justice. One thing is for certain, some of my favorite things in this world are cattle, cattle people, and auctions, and this job allows me to put all those things together! I look forward to catching up with those I have met before and meeting those who I have not yet had the pleasure of knowing. I hope everyone has a safe and blessed sale season! Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can help in any way. God Bless you all, Cody

Well, as I sit at Tucker's "end of football season" party, I'm feeling very emotional about maybe a not so spectacular record, but at watching my son bond and become a teammate with some great kids. Not to mention, the coaches were amazing with their patience and ability to get through to these boys. I'm not sure if it's my pregnancy hormones or just my love of football that makes me teary at the thought of not getting to see this group of boys every week!! Taylor has been busy in 2nd grade and did an outstanding job with her class leading mass at school! After mass we get a chance to say "hi" to the kiddos and Tuck with his buddies were right there, too! I tease her that it will be hard for her to ever date with Tuck and all his buddies watching over her! She thinks it's funny now but I have a feeling she will be asking big brother to stop chasing off boys. Matt is over the moon delighted that she has all these older boys watching out for her! As we do every year, the kids and I hit Pumpkin World. Our friends, the Campfield's, Mindy, Rob and boys, Rowdy & Lucky own it and they have many locations throughout Des Moines! The kids spotted a huge pumpkin 150+ lbs! I really didn't think much of it because I had my car and my trunk was already full of pumpkins and squash! The next thing I know, Rob has a fork lift moving
will be washed away and we as Americans can come together as a strong nation again. At the end of the day, no race is more important than another. We are all Americans, together. I'm pretty sure the terrorists don't see us as separate races, we are all Americans and need to start showing each other respect and kindness. Don't forget to count all the blessings in your life. God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com
