Greetings, I was always taught to never complain about rain, and I probably won’t yet, but if we could just slow it up a little I would be okay with that. Most of all, I would like to have all the precipitation while the temperature is above 40 degrees and possibly a little snow kicker in December. I guess I’m not as brave as I use to be on ice and snow. Pre-sale meals have been pretty much the same for the last 25 years, and most of us enjoy what we are served and are thankful for the meal. It seems like I’m hitting a few changes in our usual barbeque beef/ baked beans/ potato salad meal. This last month I have had the privilege to have a special Tri Tip meal. These folks went above and beyond the simplicity system. We are talking Tri Tip steak, potatoes and a desert bar second to none. The next sale meal was an ol’ farm boy’s dream come true, a hot beef sundae. This hot beef sundae was a fix it your self type of deal. Get as many potatoes as you want, then as much meat (cubed up) as you want, with good ol’ beef gravy topping. Folks, that is just good down home stuff, and I plum filled up on it. Once again, a dessert display that made me gain three pounds just looking at it. A big thank you to all those folks that put these meals together, it is appreciated. I really can’t believe it’s Thanksgiving time already. All of us here at Livestock Plus and the Sorensen Family wish you a great Thanksgiving. Please keep our service people and their families in your thoughts and prayers. I’m truly thankful for them. Here, we bow our heads in prayer and stand respectfully for our country. God Bless

If indeed we are now seeing ‘wage growth’ then we can reasonably assume that there will still be waiting lines to get into the Texas Roadhouse’ chain and of course the high end Ruth Chris’ and Morton’s and Lawry’s. In fact, if ‘wage growth’ is the new norm then traffic could increase at most steak serving restaurants across the land and see everyone win. Naturally we all need to be cognizant of the fact that inflation long by Michael Seek, term could be a dangerous thing to wish for since it would erode the Fox Group at the Board of Trade purchasing power of our children and grandchildren and force them to work harder and longer to buy the same things we do now. Bottom line? The future looks bright indeed for Cattlemen this last quarter of the year. Be slow to give up your Cattle as they are a far more valuable asset than you might realize. Hog markets since last write have seen the Belly cuts for bacon go even lower on the year, yet Hog markets here on the Board in Chicago have shown tremendous resiliency and they too have chosen to believe that a soft US Dollar policy of the Federal Reserve and that massively undervalued ‘Belly Cuts’ for bacon will come back. The December Hogs since the last issue have blown out the highs’ of the previous month by almost 400 points. If you are a Hog producer then think twice about hedging your Hogs until the Belly, Butt and Picnic cutouts move back up half way to the highs’ of the year to date.

The Road Ahead in November for Cattle and Hogs

We encouraged you on the last issue to believe in your respective livestock industry for value reasons. Sure enough the Feeder Cattle on deferred months have now busted out on the upside and taken out old highs and are in new high territory and have thus validated the strength of the sale barn where prices paid for 9 weights seemed ridiculous to many. Ironically we have also seen new export data

I realized not too long ago that I had failed to introduce all of you to the newest member of our family. I would like for you all to meet Charlie! She is a ¾ red heeler that we got in the middle of August. I am probably going to regret saying this but she has seriously been the easiest puppy ever! She has a very playful personality and is itching to help us with cow work already. You may call me foolish or crazy but I drove all the way to Chappell, NE to get her. But, I need to fill you in on why I needed to go that far for this pup. After college, I spent a year in western Nebraska working with some good friends of mine and gaining some great hands on experience - raising cattle in a totally different environment than what I was used to. During my time there, I got to work a lot with Clint Snell and his dog, Rowdy. I soon decided that if that dog had pups, I needed to have one! Well my wish came true and I got to call the little runt of that litter… mine. I had Valentine for nearly 5 years before I lost her about a year and a half ago. She literally went everywhere with me and I could not have asked for a better dog. Since losing her though, I haven’t been overly excited about getting another pup. That was, until Clint called. He said, “well, you won’t believe it but, Rowdy is going to breed Val’s mom again.” I was kind of caught by surprise and wasn’t sure if I should get one or not. I decided that the opportunity to have a full sister to Val was too good to be true and planned my trip to Chappell. I can’t thank Clint, Leslie, Jentry and Jeryn enough for their continued friendship over all the years and miles that have separated us. I may not see or talk to them near as much as either of us wish, but having Val… and now Charlie, reminds me of them daily! I do have to very reluctantly admit that Charlie isn’t quite the “my dog” that I was planning on. For some reason, she thinks she is just as much Tamar’s as she is mine. I suppose some of that comes with being a married man now, so I think I can come around to that! I will be sure to keep you in the loop as to what trouble Charlie and I are getting into. “Learn it From Us” by Kim Tibken

By night I’m a designer, but during the day, “mooommm” gets screamed across my house at least 100 times. Three ornery little farmers keep me running from sun up to sun down, and most nights, 8 o’clock bedtime just can’t come soon enough. We’ve been spending some time in the barn working with their new show heifer that appeared “out of the blue” late this summer. Maggie (a miniature hereford) is the most loved heifer in the world and she is teaching both Mom & the boys lots of life lessons. Our most recent lesson, I hope hasn’t happened to you. Now that I can laugh about it, I’m willing to let you get a good laugh, too. So, for my first “learn it from us” life lesson… please always remember to teach your children, grandchildren, and anyone else in the wash rack this: when a heifer “relieves herself,” point the blower AWAY from the “stream.” A few choice words, and a nice lonnngg warm shower later, I think my boys learned that life lesson, and as for Mom, ultimately I learned it the hard way. Life lessons are learned in the barn, and at the age of 5, these boys now know the difference between a steer and a heifer. n

Six years. Six years I’ve been with Livestock Plus. Seven, if you count the first year that I played driver for Mike and now he has finally convinced me to write an article! Now, for once in my life, I am short on words. I guess I can blame it on sale season and a full schedule of sales, herd visits and other trips that in one way or another revolve around work or cattle. Honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way! Everyone on the LPI sales crew lives for this time of year. The cattle, the camaraderie and yes the food is a plus, most of the time. But, the biggest reason why we do this, why we spend countless nights in hotels and why we drive hundreds of miles from sale to sale just to do it all over again the next day, is you, our customers! Without you we couldn’t do what we do for a living and sometimes I think we take that for granted. Sure, we do our best to shake hands and say thank you when the sale is over or after going through your herd but is it enough? Our livelihood of promoting and merchandising livestock depends on your success. I’ll be seeing many of you on the fall sale and show road and I encourage you to contact me or anyone else on the LPI Team with questions on advertising, to set up a herd visit or just talk cattle! The holidays are approaching quickly, and how many of you have already started your Christmas shopping? I like to think I’m better under pressure, but it is so not true! I am so excited for our “Holiday Gift Guide”in this issue of LPI and our upcoming December issue! Its nice to get ideas and maybe, just maybe, start early! The last couple of months I have been filling in at the kids’ school for a paraeducator that is on the mend. I’ve had so much fun with these little humans! They have taught me a lot about kindness and just plain, pure love. As many of you know my kids are going to a Catholic school. We are not Catholic, however, but I absolutely love the fact that the kids are exposed to God each and every day. With the world so full of hate right now, it’s refreshing to walk in and see “God is good all the time” on the wall. One day I became a little teary eyed when I walked into the kindergarten class. They were going around and each saying what they wanted to pray for and I heard my name. I had a couple biopsies for skin

cancer and the kids prayed for Mrs. Heidi, not realizing I was even in the room. My heart nearly exploded, the thoughtfulness and kindness the teachers and staff possess is inspiring to the kids. Leading by example is the lesson I take home daily from working with these wonderful teachers, staff and kiddos! Please continue praying for our military and their families and also for our nation as a whole. I’m so very sad that our National Anthem, the very heart of this nation, has been treated so poorly and to what end. If you want to change how our country looks at and treats certain races, do something in your community to help raise awareness. Don’t disrespect the very song that stands for the men and woman that have fought for the freedom that some so easily take for granted. I hope at some point our National Anthem is treated with the respect and the honor it deserves because those men and women deserve so much better for sacrificing and putting their lives on the line.
