is one of the easiest calving purebred Simmentals in the breed. The last 2 years we have had 60 heifers calve out of him and we have never had to pull a calf. They are stylish, correct with growth, performance and eye appeal. Our cattle have to do a lot of walking, we are fussy about good feet and legs. There is an epidemic of back curly toes and toeing out on the front legs in both Simmentals and Angus. He is the most correct bull you will find. He is a Duracell by Dream On x Built Right. His dam was the Grand Champion female at the American Royal. You NEED to Try Him.

MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mikelpi@yahoo.com
Greetings, As the old saying goes, rain, rain, go away, come again another day. All my farming friends are getting a little annoyed with too much moisture. The crops are looking good here, though. I hope everyone else’s is looking good as well. Attitudes on livestock purchases would be much better if we could get those crops out and sold for a profit. Be safe in harvesting. Every once in a while I can impress myself. To start this story off, I was with my bride the other day at Hy-Vee in West Des Moines. Over the store speakers they said “for the next five minutes, our prime reserve ribeye steaks that retail for 26.95 per pound will be on sale.” Me, trying to occupy my time in a grocery store, headed to the meat counter. The gentleman asked if he could help me and my response was sure, where is this prime reserve that’s on sale? He lead me to a tray of what looked like decent meat. My next question for him was “do you have any with a bit of marbling?” He began sorting and every time he would come up with a wellBuy 12 CAPS with YOUR EMBROIDERD LOGO on them and get 2 FREE! The more you buy, the more free caps you get! Hat styles available: golf, baseball, stocking, beanies and head bands.

marbled piece, we set it aside, then we sorted from them. Ends up, I took all six of them from the first sort. At $26.95 per pound, it makes you think just a little. But, as a friend of mine always told me, “it only takes another nickel to go first class.” With that said, we had a package that said prime reserve ribeye steaks, born raised, and processed in USA. Now, to the preparation. It seemed like the last few ribeyes I prepared had a close resemblance of shoe leather. Not that I’m in the habit of chewing on shoes but lets just say I was a pinch disappointed. I tried to go by the book with my grilling techniques on these prime reserve steaks. It must have worked. I even impressed both my bride and myself. Lets just call it a pleasant blend of good steaks, proper preparation, and an average grilling professional. Dixie and I were both impressed with the flavor and tenderness and I’m pretty sure my secret seasoning was dead on. Hy-Vee Prime Reserve, you got me hooked. My only request is that we share some of that $26.95 a pound with the folks that done all the work to get the steaks to Hy Vee. All of us at Livestock Plus Inc. want to wish all of you the most blessed Thanksgiving. Please keep our military in your thoughts and prayers Travel safe and see ya down the road! God Bless

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION
Market Issues and Actions BY DAVID TROWBRIDGE, ICA PRESIDENT Well, it has been a devastating month for cattle producers since my last article. Plummeting fat cattle prices have dragged the entire production industry into new lows. The effects on Iowa’s beef production segment has been deep and critical. The leadership and staff of ICA has been totally immersed in dealing with the information needs of producers, the calling for oversight and investigation by regulatory agencies, and the gathering of facts for Iowa producers to be better able deal with this stressful time. All of the leadership and I have heard from producers and listened to the concerns and the ideas of how to deal with this market. I have stated before that in unprofitable market environments, Iowa producers are more negatively impacted because of their size and business structure than larger corporate feeders. The acquisition of operating funds in these times and the personal decision to invest in the cattle market are both more difficult for smaller feeders in markets like this. This brings all this to a very personal level to producers in Iowa. We have asked every person we have heard from, “What should ICA be doing to prevent this from happening again?” The answers have been diverse, emotional and insightful. I still believe that the answers to these problems are out there, with one of Iowa’s producers. Better business management, fewer regulations, better financial risk management tools, a friendlier business environment and more, were some of the thoughts. But by far the most common answers were involving more packer competition, breaking up the big packers, eliminating packer contracts and formula trading and 100% negotiated trade. All the answers have some merit in thought, some were practical, and all were emotionally driven. At the September board meeting, we
dedicated some time to listening to directors’ conversations with producers. These interactions were moving, and I want to thank all the directors for their time given to really listening to producers in their district. They are there for you to convey your ideas to the board to lead ICA into the future. I want to personally thank director Bob Noble for bringing forward his observation on ICA’s actions on these market issues. Bob noted that three years ago the ICA BOD sent an ICA membership policy to the NCBA convention for the marketing committee. This policy mandated 50% negotiated trade for all fat cattle traded nation wide. ICA leadership brought this policy forward and created a stir within the ranks of all the nation’s leading feeder states. Out of this policy by ICA, with lots of input by past president Ed Greiman, the fed cattle sale on Superior Auction was created. This effort to increase negotiated trade to support price discovery was a direct result of ICA policy. Ed and Brad Kooima have also led the charge through ICA and NCBA for several years to build better and more effective price protection tools with the CME. The insights and foresights of these and other ICA leaders have protected and enhanced these tools for producers for several years. In April, ICA went to the Iowa capital to meet with Governor Reynolds. We presented the Governor with an initiative to address four issues facing the beef industry in Iowa. One issue was regulation modification for the beef industry including environmental, business and taxation. This issue was brought up by producers in some conversations this month. Another issue was the business environment to encourage more small packer development in the state of Iowa. We emphasized the concern that a bad market would have on Iowa’s producers’ decisions and ability to remain in the cattle business. We asked for and
are working forward with the Governor’s office to create working groups to address these four initiatives for the Iowa producer. ICA stepped forward immediately when the sale of Iowa Premium Beef to National Beef was stalled by undue scrutiny. Placing the largest Iowa packing plant in jeopardy at this time was too great a risk for Iowa producers to not put the full force of ICA into play. ICA leadership was the factor that moved this transaction forward. So because of the input of membership, all these issues have been addressed and action was taken by ICA Board of Directors long before there was a fire in Kansas in August or a disastrous cattle market in September. Complex issues and unforeseen events are, at times, very difficult to mitigate and the actions taken are sometimes slow to create solutions, but ICA has been out in front for some time on the very issues we are now facing. ICA has led the charge to address these issues; our efforts have placed these issues at the forefront of state and national leaders. The results have not always been to our liking but the fight goes on. The quest to find solutions to market events like the one we are enduring now will take all producers’ united efforts. We, as individuals, cannot have the impact that we, as members of ICA, will have. The foresight of membership to bring forward to leadership these issues so they can be addressed is not a fortunate coincidence for Iowa producers but an expectation of membership. With the input of producers, the creation of policy and the action of staff, ICA is able to take the lead in addressing issues that will affect the beef industry in the future. I know things are ugly right now and in times of stress we all need help even if it is just someone to listen to our concerns. Know that your ICA staff and volunteer leadership is there to assist you in any way they can. November 2019

MAYNARD JAYNE SCHOLARSHIP
The Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation is currently accepting scholarship applications in honor of the late Maynard Jayne. The Jayne Family has graciously donated memorial monies as well as their own funds to develop the Maynard Jayne Scholars program. Maynard Jayne was a long time Iowa Cattlemen’s Association employee. He
began his career as a field representative and helped increase membership numbers across the state. His greatest contribution, though, was as a lobbyist for ICA at our State Capitol. Maynard’s industry knowledge and his ability to bring the right people together made him a highly respected key player at the state legislature. Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation will be awarding the Jayne Scholar at the Leadership Summit this coming December. The deadline for application submission is November 15.
BEEF SCHOLARSHIP EXTRAVAGANZA
The Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation is proud to host the Beef Scholarship Extravaganza. It is one of the most challenging and rewarding youth cattle com-
petitions in the nation. Young people who participate in this event reap the benefits of their preparation long after the competition is over. Registration is due Nov. 1. The contest is open to high school juniors and seniors who test their knowledge on beef industry and beef cattle management issues. Stations cover the following beef industry topics: • Credit and Finance • Seedstock Merchandising • Nutrition • Reproduction • Industry Issues and Advocacy • Marketing • Beef Management • Health • Job Interview • Keep-Cull Heifer Replacement Evaluation

It has been a whirlwind of a month to say the least! As you all know, we welcomed our little man into this world last month and time has flown by ever since. He has changed our lives in more ways than we could have ever imagined, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. He came with me to his first cattle sale this month and that quickly reminded me of why we all want our children to grow up in this industry. It is more than learning responsibility from doing chores. It is more than learning the importance of hard work through showing cattle. It is more than learning how to lose. It is so, so much more – it’s the people! Tamar and I saw probably 50 of our closest friends in the cattle business that day and each and every one of them took the time see Cort and show Tamar and me support. We are so incredibly blessed. Cort is just over a month old and I can tell you he already has a bigger army of supporters than we would have ever imagined. I am so excited to watch him grow up in this industry and give him the opportunity to learn from so many wonderful people. Tamar and I just want to say thank you for showing Cort and us, all the love and support you already have! God Bless, Cody

The Road Ahead for Fat and Feeder Cattle and Other Markets by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade
This article is being written mid-October and thus more difficult to help you see the road ahead, however, the old saying ‘Feeders are the leaders’ comes to mind and naturally there is great debate over who and what will win on a seasonal bottoming of the USDA Beef Boxes’ or the seasonal peak on Feeders. Considering the ‘bubble values’ we elected on mid-October at the 146.87 basis November Feeders we will go with the seasonal pattern on Feeder Cattle to the downside. If markets stay true to form they will head south more than expected and then turn around and do the same thing on the upside. Adding to potential livestock and financial market angst is the fact that China is not appreciating a U.S. bill supporting Hong Kong protestors. Be very sure of that. Shanghai and the SP500 stock index futures have had a solid rally end of September and into mid-October and this is a perfect time for the stock market to stop dead in its track in consideration of all the historical ‘problems-mini-meltdowns’ in the month of October. Add into this equation that we have a ‘Phase 1’ quasi-deal with China and the markets may wake up any hour and see smoke and mirrors on many markets. Does anyone really believe Trump and Chinese President Xi have a ‘beautiful relationship’? Not too many folks with wisdom think so. Setting aside the massive debt he is running up, Mr. Trump is doing an excellent job running the country like a business, yet his hyperbole on describing ‘deals’ has become excessive. We should have locked up a more profound

So how do Cattlemen stay out in front of different unexplained drops in cash and board traded Cattle prices? Get in the rhythm of integrating wholesale beef and the values of your Cattle standing on the dirt and be ready to hedge when extreme overvaluations kick in on the Board and the Dressed Choice Steers and the Choice Box so that when solid ‘lock-in per head’ prices line up with overvaluation on Dressed Steers that you know how to use the Board to execute the Board or like-kind forward contracts. Whether you wake up in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning and wonder about your Cattle and how you might better hedge one of your ranches’ most valuable assets then call Michelle White at 312-756-0931 and request a 90 day complimentary nightly and weekend Cattle Advisory that is delivered by email. Please have your email address ready when you call her. We provide Cattle hedging tutorials here at the Board of Trade and you can come in person on a Friday or Saturday morning or afternoon and educate yourself on the risk and rationale of Cattle hedging in a global economy that packers probably understand better than most cattlemen. And remember, hedging livestock and feed costs with CBOT or CME instruments still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt. n

The Way I See It by Austin Brandt
Sale season is in full swing and that means that harvest has begun as well. It’s a busy time of year, no matter what area of the ag industry you are involved in. There are seedstock sales every weekend and online show prospect sales every night. Fall calves are arriving daily and spring calves are being weaned and prepped for market. Cover crops are going in and of course combines are running in the fields. With all this going on, it can be easy to forget that everyone else is just as busy as you are, trust me, I know all too well! This is just a reminder, to give yourself a little more time and give farmers a little more room. We all have things that need to get done, but turning on your flashers and following a tractor or combine for a mile or two isn’t gonna make you any more late than you already are!

One of my favorite things about fall sale season is the diversity of types of cattle sold. From show heifers to bred heifers, show steers to herd bull prospects and proven donors to pairs, there is literally something for everyone! It’s also a great time to get a full view of on operation, because as I said before, you get a chance to see every type of cattle they are raising. Now, does this make fall sales better than spring sales? Heck no! This is just my opinion and its probably not worth a dime, but you have read this much of the article for one reason or another! We have a lot of sales coming up that one or a multiple of us field guys will be at. I encourage you to call us if you are interested in any of them coming up, or if you just want to talk cattle. Trust me, you can only listen to the radio/podcasts so long and you want to talk to a real person that talks back! If you are wondering if its a good time to call, just follow us on Snapchat. Most of us are pretty good at keeping the world up to date on our adventures. If you’d like to follow me on Snapchat, look me up as: abrandt89. Take care and see you down the road! Austin

Fall Hair Care with Kirk Stierwalt The cooler temperatures make it easier to grow hair but the dry air is another challenge. Moisturizing is key during the winter months. It’s very important to replenish natural oils to keep the hide and hair healthy and fresh. How do you restore the natural beauty of your calf’s hair coat? Kirk Stierwalt recommends a leave-in conditioner.
How to apply: 1. Wash or rinse your calf. Blow and comb your calf’s hair until it is almost dry.
Kirk s Leave-in conditioner recipe Mix one part liquid ProCharge to three parts ProPolish in a spray bottle.
2. Blow in the leave-in conditioner by holding the spray bottle in front of your blower hose and apply while blowing the hair. Remember to blow all the hair forward and up. 3. After you have blown in the leave-in conditioner, Kirk likes to use the Wide Range Fluffer Brush to work the product into the hair, while pulling all the hair up and forward. Continue to brush and blow the calf until completely dry. It is important to note, however, if you do not have a heated barn and it is under 40°, it may not be safe to wash your calf. During this time, you can still work hair by blowing in Kirk’s leave-in conditioner and brushing.
WHy it works:
ProCharge is formulated with olive oil and other conditioners to nourish and restore hydration. It also contains clove oil, a high quality essential oil that stimulates the hide and promotes hair growth. Clove oil is a natural antimicrobial and antiseptic, making it a great asset for maintaining hide health, which is another reason why it’s perfect for cold weather. ProPolish works well with ProCharge because it adds shine while improving hair quality and manageability. It is a lightweight product that we love in the summer because it helps repel dust and dirt while protecting hair from the harsh environment. Even though it’s cold outside we still need to protect our calf’s hair coat from the harsh sunlight.

Fluff It Up I N N O VA T I O N M A T T E R S . • The Wide Range Fluffer’s long ball-tipped bristles reach down to stimulate the undercoat while short fiber bristles help fluff the longer top hairs for greater pop and bloom • Great for pulling dead hair follicles from the undercoat • Barrel-shaped head is ideal for working around various angles and curves of the body • Wooden handle provides comfortable grip

I write this article during one of the hardest weeks I’ve experienced. On October 15th, we lost my grandfather, my Dad’s father. This is the man that drove me home from cattle shows, he would make me laugh so hard at stories or just his reactions to the changing times. Often times, when our entire family would go out to eat, Grandma would insist on not letting Grandpa and me sit beside each other because she said we were ornery together. It’s hard to put into words how much he will be truly missed by all of us. Rest In Peace Grandpa, you will be forever carried in my heart. The kids got a super cool opportunity at the beginning of the month! My cousin, Heather Scar, approached them about showing her Kunekune pigs. We were all super Grandpa, Bubba & Me curious and excited (we won’t talk about what year it was!) by the opportunity! Tucker tried to find more information on the breed and how to “show” them. There really are some fun videos to watch! Prior to 1995, there were no Kunekune pigs in America. Kunekune are a grazing pig that are hairy with a rotund build, and may bear wattles hanging from their lower jaws. Their color ranges from black and white, to ginger, cream, gold-tip, black, brown and tricolored. They are known for their smaller size, extremely docile, friendly nature, and ease of handling. Taylor had fun just sitting in the pens loving on them! When showing the pigs, it was a lot different from showing our show pigs. First, they wear white coats and hold a small sort board and either a cane or a whip. They allow the pigs to walk naturally in the ring. The kids truly enjoyed their day and the breeders were incredibly kind and just a fun group to get to know. I hope to see more and more of this breed in the future! If you would like to learn more about this interesting breed, you can go to the website for the American KuneKune Pig Registry (AKPR): www.americankunekuneregistry.com There are lots of sales this fall! I hope everyone gets a chance to get out there and check out all the high quality cattle being sold! As always, please hold our military and our nation in your prayers, especially during the holidays. God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com
