our projection of a 7% rally in the Boxed Beef wholesale market in the months ahead could help Five Area Choice Steers make another run at the mid to high 140’s in the new year that we all just witnessed back in May of this year. Feeders have a reasonable shot at 175 to 180, basis the front month. Yes, 175 sounds high, however, we must all remember that Feeders traded north of 230 in the last five years and thus the 175 mark should not sound like a pipe-dream. Central Bankers, including our own Federal Reserve, have expressed strong interest in higher inflation and while inflation is not a good thing for the purchasing power of our grandchildren years down the road it can be a very good thing for livestock producers and the meat exports from same.
COMMENTARY
The Road Ahead in December for Cattle by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade
Last month we shared with you that “The future looks bright indeed for Cattlemen this last quarter of the year. Be slow to give up your Cattle as they are a far more valuable asset than you might realize.” You now know that December Cattle on the Board jolted up and made new highs on the year by over 5 dollars and this last quarter of 2017 does indeed look bright. The economy is thriving and we have also seen new record highs on the stock market since last month and President Trump and Commerce Secretary have just recently negotiated approximately 250 billion dollars of business for our country, a portion of which is earmarked for beef. This President and his gifted team of business veterans is not apologizing for being America, but instead is negotiating and reminding other countries it’s time for change and that America will be first in the future.
The Cattle markets are on solid footing and the bull market is back. Several ‘Cattle on Feed’ reports that showed larger than expected ‘Placements’ have not been able to hold Fat Cattle back and the sale barn continues to surprise many industry analysts and veterans as the price of lower weight Cattle continue to stay steady to firm on the upside with more than reasonable hope that finishing these Cattle will finish well. [pun intended]. Boxed Choice Beef is only up approximately 3.4% at the mid-November mark and yet to many Cattlemen’s surprise both Fats and Feeders are up much more so and up 20% on the year to date and the year is not yet done. You’ll see in the charts below that both Fat Cattle and Boxed Beef look good and beef export data confirm why. We are projecting Cash Cattle to trade as high as 129.75 before the end of this year and then assuming beef imports stay steady to up then

The National Western Stock show in Denver in January is always a must event for many livestock folks and the upcoming one should be too. Provided we can get enough interest from you the subscribers of this magazine we would like to put on a ‘Cattle Hedging Seminar’ on either January 13th or the 20th, both falling on Saturday. The cost of the seminar will likely be $100 and the funds would be payable and go to one or more of the favorite charities of the National Western Stock Show. If you are going to be at this event and would be interested in attending the Cattle Hedging Seminar then please call Michelle White at 312-756-0931 here at our Fox office at the Chicago Board of Trade and let her know if you would be interested and which Saturday would be best so that we can get a head count and plan conference space accordingly.
If you are a bona-fide livestock producer and would like to receive on a complimentary basis for 45 days my daily and weekend ‘Livestock report’ that includes Fat and Feeder Cattle Valuations, and Lean Hog valuations, as well as beef and Pork cutout valuations from my office here at Fox Group [clearing through rJ Obrien] here at the Chicago board of Trade then please call ms. michelle White at 312.756.0931 and let her know. And remember, hedging livestock with Chicago Board Cattle or Hog futures or the purchase and sale of grain, energy or financial future or option contracts still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt, or any other holdings they might have. Always consult with your most trusted advisors before taking on risk, whether the intent is hedging or not. ■

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Southwest Nebraska! We wish you safe travels this holiday season, hope you all get to enjoy quality time with your loved ones, and lastly, want to remind you to DVR National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation in advance, for everyone’s viewing pleasure! (You can’t have Christmas without the Griswolds!) I absolutely love designing ads, websites, catalogs and logos for our clients, and can’t wait to see what you all do in the year to come! Wishing you health and happiness this holiday season! And, in the New Year: May the calves come easy, the markets build to new highs and the crop yields be record breaking!
Greetings! I’d like to thank all the people that let us work with them on their events. Every day I have the privilege to work with so many great people - each with their own beliefs - yet striving to reach the same goal. Happy Holidays! May your travel be safe, your friendships be strong and the joy of the season be with you all. Thanks again!

It has been an exciting first year spent with all of you and representing LPI! I am very blessed to be able to surround myself with such great people. I would say that it doesn’t seem possible for it to be Christmas time, however, my “Christmas obsessed” wife has already been trying to convince me that we need our tree up! She loves the holidays, but honestly, I can’t say I blame her. I mean who doesn’t enjoy spending time with family, eating way more than you ever thought you could, and of course, watching Christmas Vacation at least 4-5 times! My prayer is that the good Lord has blessed you as much as He has blessed us over this past year. May you all have the gift of Faith, the blessing of Hope, and the peace of His Love, at Christmas and always.
Where has time gone? Feels like summer and State Fair was just here and now we are well into sale season and the holidays are knocking on the door! This fall has been extremely busy between our (Brandt Farms) online sale, working sales all over, trying to get crops out and still trying to find time to work on Iowa Beef Expo cattle. The online sale was the best one we have ever had. Harvest was a bit of a challenge this year, being plenty wet early and overall not ideal weather conditions made everyday an adventure. Like always, we got it done and yields were better than expected in this area, so that was a pleasant surprise! Every year my sale schedule gets a little busier and this year has been a good ride so far. I am looking forward to seeing many of you on the road as this fall sale season turns into winter! If you are at the NWSS or Iowa Beef Expo be sure to look me up! As always, feel free to call me anytime to talk cattle or just chat. I’ll see you down the road!
- Austin Brandt
- Cody & Tamar Crum Reflecting on this past year and the blessings that have been granted me, I can not overlook the part all of you have played in making Livestock Plus a success. Thank you for your patronage and your support in making Livestock Plus what it is today. The saying goes “if you love what you do, you never have to work a day in your life.” I am thankful to say that I can claim that old cliché as truth. My hope for all of you is that the next year brings you success in your endeavors and that you make the best of any adverse situation that sits you down for a minute. Let us all be kind, patient and forgiving of one another and strive to make, or be, the difference that makes this world a better place. May God bless you in ways you have never imagined.
Another year has gone all too quickly, and I continue to find myself looking back, not even believing 2017 has almost come to an end. My hope is that this finds you and yours enjoying a peaceful, joyful season — and that you’re looking forward to what this next year may hold. From southwest Iowa, we’re wishing you the Merriest Christmas and the Happiest New Year!

Iowa State Fair Livestock A history worth preserving and a future worth supporting. The Iowa State Fair is a celebration of all things Iowa – including its rich livestock and agriculture heritage. The tradition of showing livestock can start as a 4-H project and grow into an FFA exhibit. The Iowa State Fair takes pride in the professional level of showmanship displayed in the barns. Each year, the wide range of breeds is as impressive as winning the Grand Champion title! A tradition any Iowan can be proud of, the Blue Ribbon Foundation is dedicated to continuing the Iowa State Fair’s legacy. We invite you to join a community of generosity and become more involved with the Fair you know and love. By giving a donation, you are supporting the renovations and improvements needed to preserve our historic Iowa State Fairgrounds.
