Greetings!

Ok, I have had enough of winter now. Let’s move on and get some warm weather. Maybe the south is looking better every day.

The food story this month is going to be kinda different. I had absolutely nothing to write about this month. Then all at once, Mom and Dad came through with one of the best stories ever for me.

Mom invited us to join her and dad at the nursing home for the Valentine’s Day supper. Dixie was not feeling well so I called my son Ray “Bubba” to join me and the folks for the supper. The supper consisted of prime rib, baked potato, and creamed corn, then topped off with chocolate cake and we actually had a glass of wine.

the fact that we got to spend time with my folks. We had a very nice time, cut up a little, laughed a lot, and that is better than any meal, being with family. I would like to thank the whole nursing home staff for the great care that they give my parents.

I know that we all say don’t ever take me to the nursing home but folks when it’s needed it’s nice to have. To the staff at The Good Samaritan Center in Fontanelle, Iowa, thank you and God Bless you for what you do for my parents. And to the Praise Singers from the Lutheran Church thank you for your time to entertain the folks at the home.

Thanks Mom and Dad for everything.

It is a bit hard to think about making plans to go to the Iowa State Fair’s “Corn Dog Kickoff,” when it is zero outside. If you’ve never been there, you should make plans to go. It is held on a Saturday night in the middle of July at the Varied Industries Building at the fair grounds. This is a cool event in more ways than one. By the middle of July one needs air conditioning and there are so many fun events all evening, one right after another, all included with your entry ticket.

The first thing to do is to get your picture taken with your best friend for the evening or for life. Next start sampling “State Fair Food.” It is available at booths around the inside walls of the building on three sides. Cost is covered by your ticket. My personal favorite is a pork chop on a stick and a root beer float. Personally, I can not think of anything better to eat. Eat two if you want or something else if you prefer.

Then, check out the 200-250 silent auction items you can bid on. The variety is almost unbelievable. If you really want one of the items you’ll need to check back often to see if someone has raised your bid. Next, the live auction starts with Col. Al Conover and a group of bid takers, like Mike Sorenson, publisher of this magazine.

Up for bidding are things like: Meet and greet with the musical stars that appear in front of the Grandstand, a week long vacation in the Colorado mountains in a villa for ten, a ride in a race car over at the

Our daughter Renae Chesnut was appointed as the Dean of the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Drake University in Des Moines. There are 700 students in Drake’s Pharmacy School. In addition, we are also proud of our two sons, Tom, has been a Karting Engine Builder of the Year all six years the award has been given. Steven is an IT person. He keeps the computers working in the Iowa Highway Patrol cars, among other computers used by state offices. In addition, Tom and Jody’s daughter Brooke and her husband, Jeremy presented us with our first great grandchild, Gannon.

So, I have a funny little story about my niece, Independence (Indie). Indie’s parents are my brother, Bubba, and his wife, Maria.

If you know my brother, also known as The Freedom Rock® Artist, you know we are pretty close but give each other a ton of crap! Well, recently, Maria texted me the following conversation between Bubba and my niece, Indie, as they were painting little butterfly crafts. Bubba had turned the paint around so it was closer to himself and Indie said, “Daddy you don’t have to turn the paint for yourself, use the paint you got and I will give you some more when you need it.” Bubba then replies, “Oh my gosh, I feel like I’m sitting at the table with Heidi again!” Maria then added “Yeah there’s a new Heidi in town!” with Bubba’s final comment, “It’s a Maria/Heidi hybrid and it’s scary!” My dear brother could only be so lucky! Indie and I are not bossy, we just have fantastic leadership skills! Ha Ha That being said, most people know my brother is currently trying to paint a patriotic rock in each of Iowa’s 99 counties called The Freedom Rock® Tour. Currently, he has completed 41 and only has 58 to go. Now, he has just recently announced The 50 State Freedom Rock® Tour! It will run parallel with the Iowa Freedom Rock® Tour with Bubba continuing to work in Iowa in the warmer months. Iowans need not worry, he plans to keep his pace of 10-12 finished each year. Check out their website for additional information www.thefreedomrock.com. As much as my sister, Mandi, and I tease Golden Boy (aka Bubba) we are pretty proud of our brother!

My kids are attending a private Catholic school this year and absolutely love it, even though we are Lutheran. They both love religion class and Taylor has become quite the enforcer of what everyone is giving up for Lent this year. She first informed us that we can’t JUST give up something we don’t like because that doesn’t count, so she took it upon herself to “assist” us all in what we should give up. Keep in mind, Taylor just turned seven a couple weeks ago, so she decided candy was her “important” thing to give up. She also reasoned that she could still have brownies because those didn’t actually come in a wrapper like her favorite KitKat’s or M&M’s. Now, Tucker’s might be a little harder, he says he is giving up getting seconds at the dinner table. Matt jokes that he didn’t give up having third and fourth helpings though! Love them both and it makes me happy watching them discover their own thoughts on God and religion.
