Mike Sorensen ~ Sales Cell: 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com
Greetings, Well, as I write this, The Iowa Winter Beef Expo is over as far as sales go, still have the junior show to complete. I just completed 4 sales today and I am pretty sure all of them were up from a year ago. A big thanks goes out to Mindy Campfield and all her staff for a beautifully executed Expo. Now I will be headed to the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic in Kearney, Nebraska. I have just eaten probably the best steak for Iowa Winter Beef Expo 2012. After four sales and lots of walking from one breed to the other for some twelve hours, sometimes you just don’t even enjoy food. Maybe it's that you just don’t have enough ambition to move your jaws. But, as I say this, this steak house was almost perfect. We went to the Latin King in Des Moines. The front of the menu says Tursi’s Latin King Italian Dining Since 1947. I myself am really not much on Italian food, simply because my perception
has always been that it is real spicy. Well, their menu is not pure Italian food. They have regular food for us softer stomachs. I went out on a limb, though, and ordered steak duburgo. The menu description of the duburgo: a blend of butter, garlic and basil simmering on top of a succulent 9 oz beef tenderloin. What a piece of meat! It was tender, seasoned to perfection, and grilled perfectly. It came with a twice-baked potato that was formed into a perfect ball shape. After talking to our waiter, we found out that this beef is born and raised in Iowa, aged for 2 plus weeks after arriving and cut on site prior to grilling. That alone makes this place a place to talk about. If in Des Moines, give The Latin King a try it’s awesome!! There are lots of sales coming up! If any of us here at Livestock Plus can help you find that next great addition to your program just give us a call. As always please keep our service men and women in your thoughts and prayers. Your Freedom depends on it.

Pay Attention to Nutrition By Toby Muller
Things are changing and I’m not sure how it could get more exciting in the Muller family. Dawson has been wrestling and playing basketball this year, Hannah started going to tumbling class and loves it, our puppies are finally on the ground and soon we’ll have that new baby in the crib. It seems like just yesterday that Dawson and then Hannah were keeping us up all night and now we’ll have a brand new set of lungs screaming at us to get up and give him some attention. The cattle industry is changing even faster. Cow numbers are low, cattle prices and inputs are high, and in this part of the world, pasture is disappearing at an alarming rate. This makes for a lot of important nutrition decisions for the cow man. I don’t at all claim to be an expert in nutrition but I do know that it is the single most important factor in making reproduction work. That’s a bit concerning, considering our cows don’t eat the same things that they did several years ago. Not only has high-priced

feedstuffs forced us to try new and less expensive alternatives during the winter months, shrinking pasture acres in the Midwest has forced many cattlemen to supplement cows in the summer also. In fact, a lot of our heifers don’t see green grass all the way from adolescence until they’re wet two year old’s. This has definitely led to challenges in keeping cattle in proper breeding condition and ultimately getting them bred, especially in hot years. The bad news, I believe, is that none of these challenges are going to go away. The good news is that cattlemen always show a lot of resolve and I’m certain we as an industry will continue to get better. So work with your nutritionist, sample your feedstuffs often, do your research, and pay attention to how your cows respond to the changes you make in their diets. The decisions made now through breeding season will have a great impact on your conception rate in the fall. Remember, it doesn’t matter what that animal’s potential to marble, grow fast, calve easy, or even win in the show ring were if it wasn’t born in the first place. Reproduction is the most important economic trait in the cattle industry. - Toby n

Bar N Ranch is the home of proven genetics, having brought you such sires as Irish Whiskey and DadGum. Now, with the progressive breeders Ohlde Brothers Cattle and Dan May Show Cattle we proudly introduce Bar N Chop House, one of the best sons of ZKCC Chopper we have seen to date. He is stout, big boned, big topped and 100% sound and correct in his movements. His maternal grandsires, OCC Machinist 734M and Sharpie are proven producers of excellent maternal genetics. This bull will benefit the programs of club calf and seed stock producers alike, adding style, substance and that maternal foundation. With an actual bw of 72 pounds and a weaning weight of 724 in the severe drought we had this year he has proven there is plenty of grow to him for the commercial producer, too.

Commentary
A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things
by Evan Rayl
The early registered cattle sales have caused considerable excitement in the beef industry this winter. None have been close to the Schaff Angus Sale in North Dakota, however. 437 bulls averaged $12,412, while 186 females averaged $11, 229, for a total of $7,513,000. The top selling bull went for $300,000. I’m sure several records were set with this sale, but I doubt anyone has had time to figure all that out yet. I do know that the Tolan Sale after World War II averaged $10,000 on 50 head, but converted into todays dollars, that sale would have averaged $100,000 per head. Crowds at all the sales so far this winter have been very good, despite the fact that cow numbers are down so much. High prices bring more people out. There has only been one Christmas; the rest are anniversaries. W. J. Cameron With cattle numbers down so much, pundits are predicting some packers will go out of business. Without a new packing plant built in the last 30 years, I’m sure some of them are worn enough that they need to be closed. Question is, if cattle numbers come back, will there be anyone with enough money to build new plants? Looking at the situation right now, we know that almost no farmers or ranchers are still holding onto feeder cattle, and most of the feedlots are limiting themselves to custom feeding. So who owns the cattle? I'm betting on the packers, who know that if they don’t own them they won’t get to kill them. Time will tell if I’m right about this idea.

A man wrapped up in himself makes a very small bundle. Benjamin Franklin Speaking of packing plants, plans are in the works to reopen the old Tama Packing Plant in June. Roy Wiggs of Iowa Premium Beef said the company will specialize in custom cut orders with 90 percent of sales expected domestically. When the plant goes into full operation, they expect to kill 800 head per day. Officials of the plant say that every job in the plant will have wages higher than the county average. Should be a good thing for Tama County. Nobody stands taller than those willing to stand corrected. William Safire A related article in Livestock Plus this month says there is enough demand for high quality beef, that the industry could find a place for 6 million more cows. However, these cows must be able to produce high quality beef, otherwise, they will be a drag on the market and not pay their way. Demand, both here in this country and overseas, makes this possible. The next questions are, is there are enough young producers who are willing to take care of these cattle and with the competition for use of land, will there be enough pasture and hay ground to run 6 million more cows? Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are. Malcolm S. Forbes After President Obama tabled the Keystone Pipeline because of environmental concerns, Congress now has another bill they expect to go through the House. Question is, can this bill make it through

heidi@livestockplusinc.com the Democratic controlled Senate and be signed by the President? This bill transfers the decision making from the President to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, who would likely pass the bill. Originally, I thought the big problem was getting around the Ogallala Aquifer in Nebraska, but that was solved easily. What we don’t want is for the pipeline to be stopped completely, at which point the Canadians will run a pipeline to the West to supply China. The current Keystone pipeline supplies 5 percent of U.S. needs. The additional Keystone pipeline would supply another 5 percent of U.S. needs. No doubt, it is much better to get oil from Canada instead of the Middle East. n

Cattle Chat Brush, Brush, Brush It may seem like all your hard work, is for nothing! This time of the year, every stroke you make with your comb, you loose more and more hair. But this is necessary for the new hair to come in, and the sooner that you get rid of the dead hair, the sooner the new under coat will start to grow. Although it may be hard to part with, and seeing your calf almost bald gives you a sick feeling, in time with a good rinsing/brushing routine, the hair will begin to look healthy and grow again. Some people try to hang onto this dead hair too long and they don’t promote the new hair growth soon enough. Then they find their calves are left HartstackTrucking:Layout 7/17/11 8:48 AM 1 desire. are a few tips on a routine that work for us: 1. You want to beat the sun - get up as early as possible and get your calf rinsed and in the barn under fans or in the cool room. The less sun light the hair sees, the better it will be. 2. Always tie your animal with its head up while you are working with it. This will help prevent it from kicking. It will also help to prevent water from getting in its ears as well as get them accustomed to standing in the show position. 3. Blow all the dirt and dust out of the animal before you start to rinse. 4. Rinse for at least 5 minutes per calf, with as cold of water as you have. This will cool the body temperature down, not just the hide. Remember that if your hose has been sitting in the sun, the water may be very warm when it first comes out. It will then actually heat your calf up. Run it until the water cools down, before you put it on the calf. 5. Start rinsing at the butt of your calf and work forward; working the hair in a forward and down motion. This will rinse out anything that might be in the hair. 6. If you don’t have a cool room you can improvise with a small deep freeze in your wash stall. You just need to fill it and let it sit 10 or 12 hours to cool the water down. When the water is cool, put a submersible pump in the cooler (we use one that is meant for a landscaping pond) and disperse the water over your animal after wetting them down and cooling the body off already with regular water. Next you want to Photo 1 hit the hot spots and focus especially on the head, top of shoulders, bottom of brisket/heart girth, flank, and back. 7. Next, you want to brush (we use a plastic one) and comb vigorously to lift the hair away from the hide so that air can get to the hide. This will keep the animal cooler and more hair will grow. Working the hair forward, not up! (Picture 1) Photo 2 Make sure that you get all the hair on the body, even on its belly and legs. 8. The legs need to be brushed forward, from the back, wrapping around to the front. (Picture 2) 9. When combing the tail head, it is very important to work the part line as high as possible to make the animal appear more level from the hooks to pins. (Picture 3) 10. While you are working with your calf, encourage it to stand in the show position as much as possible, this will get them accusPhoto 3 tomed to this stance and ready for the show ring. Show day can be long and tiring if your cattle aren’t use to standing for long periods of time. Be sure and make them stand with their head tied up for a few hours each day, this will get them use to holding their head up for long periods, and will get them ready for the long show day. 11. Also if you keep the hair on their head clipped off, this will keep them cooler, because this is where they hold the most heat. 12. If you don’t have a cool room, be sure put a fan on your calf so they don’t steam up after rinsing. If you have any questions, feel free to call. Karen McCullough (641)344-5566

GLUCoat is easily the most economical, simplest, and most customer satisfied product compared to ANY fat supplement on the market.
• GLUCoat is not a fat product. Too much fat in the diet slows the rumen down. • GLUCoat is a sugar product. The unique blend of sugars keep the rumen working longer and faster than just a single source of glucose such as cane molasses. This can increase appetite and palatability. It has been shown to dramatically enhance fat cover, increase feed efficiency and average daily gain. • GLUCoat also has the Cellarator technology as it contains the active ingredient Cell-rate, which aids in the process of cellular replication, supports the animals immune system, helps animals get through stressful periods and aids in muscle and fat development. • GLUCoat has a refined flavored fish oil that contains the highest levels of Omega 3 Fatty Acids and naturally accruing Vitamin E which helps maintain a brighter healthier skin and hair. • GLUCoat can also increase glucose levels which is stored in the body as fat, giving livestock that bloomier, fuller, softer look while maintaining that harder muscle shape that is demanded in the show ring today. • GLUCoat is molasses based and sweet to the taste, they love it! • GLUCoat is the next level or generation to a fat source or supplement. You will never use a fat product again! Your calf, sheep, or goat will feel better, act better and their eating habits will change. 6 Million More Cattle?
Miranda Reiman, CAB Assistant Director, Industry Information
Consumers know that purchasing a high-quality steak is like an insurance policy. They’re paying quite a bit for beef these days and they want to make sure it’s good, so they look for USDA Choice or better yet, the Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) brand. But have you ever thought about high quality as your insurance policy? Study after study points to consumer preference for highly marbled beef and nearly every fed-cattle grid rewards it. It’s evident in feeder calf sales and eventually even shows in bull sale reports. Some wonder if it’s a fad. Others figure it’s a nice bonus, but nothing worthy of extra time and attention. But according to Scott Brown, livestock economist for the University of Missouri, that’s exactly what producers need to do as we rebuild the cowherd. Our future depends on it. “Regardless of the commodity we talk about, the demand for it is going to determine long run supply,” he says. Brown sees potential for significant expansion if more herds produce premium Choice or Prime beef. That’s important to all who produce and buy registered Angus bulls, for sure. The cattle cycle still functions in that declining cow numbers bring higher cattle prices, which provide incentive to expand cowherds. However, if producers shrug off demand for high-quality beef and stick with commodity goals, that recovery may only bring the herd back from 30 million next year to 31.7 million head by 2017. But there could be millions more, perhaps 33.8 million beef cows by 2018, if ranchers rebuild with cattle that produce beef for the high-quality markets. Brown says, “Providing consumers a product they are demanding, is going to give [producers] a chance to expand the herd that otherwise wouldn’t have been there.” That approach could mean

“a 10% increase in overall demand for beef,” he says, noting that economic models suggest that translates into “a long-term expansion of roughly 6 million head in cattle inventories.” This won’t just happen. It takes focus from breeders like you who are willing to make upper-percentile carcass traits a minimum requirement for entry into your program. It takes teamwork throughout the production chain. Information sharing must be the rule, not the exception. As a seedstock producer, you can lead the way, not just as a shining example of a quality-focused management plan, but as a real link to vital information that can influence a herd in the most fundamental way. Insurance plans can be complicated, but certainly, in this case the payout is worth the work. A thriving industry more insulated from the whims of the economy, better poised to deal with high inputs—all of this in the long term, plus cash premiums in the near term. When looking at the risk- to-reward ratio, most underwriters would see this as a surefire plan for success. Thanks to Certified Angus Beef for use of this opinion. While the article is directed to Angus producers, most of what is said here applies to all breeds and all cattlemen. Evan Rayl n

IS BVD Virus a Problem for Your Cow Herd? by Dr. Don Coover, DVM
Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVD) is one of the most costly diseases in cattle worldwide, with a variety of syndromes. What’s worst, the virus is very common, very contagious, and very few herds have not been exposed to the virus at one time or another. On the plus side, the infection is usually mild, with high morbidity (lots of cattle get infected) but low mortality (not many deaths due to BVD virus). The virus is a serious, significant, and costly problem for cattle producers because BVD infections are immunosuppressive and will predispose, or exacerbate, outbreaks of other diseases. Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) complex is often initiated by a bout of BVD virus, and serious death loss can result from the infectious agents that follow a BVD infection. For stocker operators and feedlots, respiratory disease is a constant, serious concern because of the death loss often initiated by a case of BVD. Cow-calf operations are especially at risk from BVD virus because if cows are infected during pregnancy, embryonic death or abortion, birth of undersized, weak calves, or calves with congenital (persistent) infections can result. Cows that are infected with a case of BVD seldom appear sick. While clinically unapparent in the dam, the effect on the fetus the cow is carrying varies with the strain of the virus and the age of the fetus. Abortion, or resorption or mummification, may occur following infection in early to mid-gestation. Even worse, apparently normal calves may be born that are congenitally, or persistently, infected with the BVD virus. The calves are dangerous and continuous sources of BVD virus for the entire herd every day of their life. Older fetuses with developed immune systems that are exposed to the virus in late gestation (>150 days) may respond the infection and produce antibodies that defeat the infection with no long term adverse effects. Cow herds that have not been well vaccinated against BVD with a vaccine that has a “fetal protection” claim may experience significant herd infertility, or even an abortion storm, where cows and especially heifers produce aborted fetuses. More commonly, affected herds have a higher than normal incidence of open cows, late calves, calves with congenital defects (such as hypoplasia, hydrocephalus, tight, curly hair coats), and weak, poor doing calves that sometimes die suddenly without any obvious cause. Very often, owners are completely unaware they have a problem with BVD in their cow herds. Frequently, the source of their problem is a calf born that was exposed to the BVD virus during gestation and the fetus survived that infection to become persistently infected as mentioned before, and serve as a continuous source of infection. Persistently infected (PI) calves usually appear normal, but carry the BVD virus throughout their entire lives, shedding huge amounts of virus and continually infecting other animals. In fact, the major source of BVD transmission is persistently infected (PI) animals that shed massive amounts of virus, much more than an animal with a normal, short term BVD virus infection. My experience is that the cost of BVD infection in a herd can be very significant. As mentioned, BVD virus in stocker operations and
116

feed lots will result in more frequent and more severe respiratory disease problems, resulting in higher than necessary morbidity and mortality. In cow calf operations, the cost seems to be more significant. My experience with herds using embryo transfer and AI programs is that the presence of even one PI animal in a herd will result in much reduced success, and much higher costs per pregnancy established. In my experience, the presence of even one PI animal per 100 or even 200 cows can decrease first service pregnancy rates by 30 to 80%, regardless of the method of breeding, i.e., natural service, AI, or embryo transfer. In order to guard against the losses that always occur with the presence of BVD virus, a good vaccination program is essential. Just as important is the elimination of the major source of BVD transmission, and that is the persistently infected animal. A cow calf producer can lessen the chance they will develop P.I. calves by vaccinating their cows with a vaccine that has the “fetal protection” claim, but to insure they do not have P.I. cows or calves in the herd, they must test for them. Stocker operators and feedlot operators must likewise test incoming animals to eliminate the threat these animals pose. When testing for animals persistently infected with BVD virus, there are several things to be aware of. First, P.I. cows will always produce a P.I. calf, so you can test all the calves in a crop, and if you know a negative calf came from a certain cow, you are sure, without testing the cow, she is not a P.I. Any cow that lost a calf, or did not have her calf tested, or did not produce a calf, should be tested. Any herd replacements, new bulls, or incoming animals should be tested. Once an animal is tested “clean”, that is, not persistently infected, they will always be clean. P.I. animals are born persistently infected, and cannot get rid of the virus. They must be eliminated from the herd. When testing animals, I strongly recommend that producers select a testing company or lab that tests each animal individually, and does not “batch” samples. In other words, some labs will put several samples together and test them all together, in order to increase profits. This is much less sensitive, and leads to false negatives. I also recommend that the samples submitted for testing be ear notch samples (skin) rather than blood (serum). Skin samples have shown to be much more reliable in detecting P.I.’s. Finally, the lab should be using a test that is approved and licensed by the USDA for detecting P.I. animals. In order to test your herd for P.I. BVD animals, arrange for a sample submission with a lab you trust, and that is running a USDA-licensed test for P.I. detection. Using an ear notcher, take a clean triangle shaped notch of ear (at least 1 cm per side), place it in a clean, dry container, accurately label it with the animal’s identity, and submit it to the lab. The cost of the test will be around $3.50, and the test will take the lab a day or two to run. If an animal is identified as persistently infected, I always encourage the producer to segregate the animal, wait a week, and submit a second sample to confirm the first diagnosis. The test we run is so sensitive that once in a while, you will pick up a transiently infected animal. In other words, the test we run is sensitive enough to detect a calf that has just a temporary bout of BVD, and is not persistently infected. This is not at all common, and may be an indication that there is still an unidentified source of BVD exposure to your animals. It is my experience that many clients I work with discount the possibility of BVD problems in their cow herds, because they have a “closed “ herd- that is , they do not buy replacements. If you share a fence with a neighbor’s cattle, have a significant deer population in your area, or have sheep in contact with your cattle, you do not have a closed herd. If you share a fence with a stocker operator, your herd is very exposed to BVD virus. Cattle producers need to protect their herds against disease, and BVD is certainly one of the most costly diseases out there. It is also one of the most difficult to detect and control. Better vaccines and much better tests for P.I. animals have made detection and control much easier, are very cost effective, and should be an essential part of your herd health program. If you have questions about BVD testing, or control, talk to your veterinarian. This article was written by Dr. Don Coover, DVM, owner of SEK Genetics at Galesburg, Kansas. Dr Coover can be reached at 800443-6389, or at www.kristy@sekgenetics.com. SEK Genetics operates a lab at their Galesburg location to help clients detect PI animals that are causing problems in their herds. n

Reserve Grand Champion Steer, 2011 NAILE Shown by Ashtin Guyer
“I have been showing cattle for 25 years and I know, that without Stretch Ashtin’s steer wouldn’t have won at NAILE. It kept the gut working as we were trying to meet all the weight back requirements. I truly give Stretch all the credit on this big win.” – Dave Guyer
get on the team and ask for it at any ShowRite or Sullivan dealer today!! Stretch will do more than any other fill product out there. Plus with the extra probotics it keeps the gut going. Take out 2 scoops per feeding from the feed ration 3 days prior to the show and add 1 scoop of Stretch; increase Stretch for the more desireable show day fill that you are looking for. If you are using a fill product on show morning only then its too late ... Prepare for show day! Stretch also can be used as an economical source of filler in a holding ration. Yes it cost more than beet pulp up front but you don’t have to use as much because it expands 3 times more. Stretch can be fed to cattle, sheep, goats and pigs.

Oh, oh how I love the Iowa Beef Expo! and Mark Ball, thought we would stop in for a bite to eat. We had a great Mindy and her crew do an amazing job time catching up and WOW, amazing steaks and stuffed mushrooms!!! every year! I need to thank Mike & Kim Thanks to our waitress, Joy. She was great and very patient with us! Ehrsam for putting up with me and the kids Seriously, it was a great night! on the trips up and back during the first part You will find in this issue an obituary of a super lady, Linda Mugge. of the week. They were life savers!! They She and her husband, Gary, could be a couple of the neatest people I have may still be making fun of me for sleeping ever had the pleasure to meet. I was deeply touched by their kindness last on the way home every night, but hey, a girl year at expo and couldn’t wait to catch up with them this year. Sadly, I has to catch up on sleep sometime!! learned that Linda lost her fight with cancer Christmas Day. Gary and his Okay, this month my article will be about family are in our prayers. Tucker and his endless eating!!! I hope to see you all at the Ohio Beef Expo!!! Please keep our military So, the other night I was in a bind and lost all my babysitters (family). men and women in your thoughts and prayers! My good friend, Nicole Rathbun, was quick to bail me out! She volunHeidi Sorensen-Sloth • 661-900-6004 c • 641-343-7112 Garvers:Layout 1 2/17/12 3:06 PM Page 1 teered to take the kids to her house for the evening. When I picked them heidi@livestockplusinc.com up, she asked me if I ever feed Tucker. That made me laugh because I have been having a heck of a time keeping the kid full. She said he ate five pieces of pizza, applesauce, Bugles and topped it off with cookies/ candy! Neecole, this is how Taylor says her name, must have been super fun because they both got so excited when I told them we would see her at the Iowa Beef Expo. I have a feeling they had a little too much fun, Mom probably wouldn’t approve, but I could never thank her enough for being there for me!!! So, after telling the Neecole story to a few of our friends at beef expo and how I don’t feed my child enough (not true), he proceeded to tell everyone how famished he was after eating an entire Happy Meal just an hour earlier. So my friend, Sara Kober, bought him two huge pieces of pizza from Campbell’s. Sara said that he told her he liked pepperoni and cheese, so she just got both. I think she thought he wouldn’t eat it all, but JUG livestock waterers:Layout 1 8/11/11 8:50 AM Page 1 he polished off both pieces and was eyeing the piece that Taylor and I got to share! So very nice of Sara and Pat, her husband, to feed my child that seems like a never ending pit!!! I have to mention going to Rube’s Steakhouse ClearCreekFarms2:3 4/20/10 3:05 PM Pagein1Waukee, IA the other night. After Ben Kelly's sale, a couple of my good friends, Ryan Ottmann
