Letter from the editor
Hello ILSC Brisbane students, teachers and staff. Session 12 is here!
Session 11 was another big session for ILSC Brisbane - packed full of the activities you’ve come to expect. In this magazine you’ll find lots of pictures of these activities. Take a look - you might see yourself in these pages! A big “thank you” to all of the students, teachers and staff who participated on our huge Halloween day. Many people went to a lot of effort to make their costumes and it was great to see! Well done to all! It was all very impressive! Session 12 has the usual plethora of epic activities as well as a few session specific “specials”. On Tuesday the 7th of November is the Melbourne Cup. Check out the calendar in the centrefold for more information!
Session 12 also sees the month of “Movember”. This is the month where people grow their moustaches to raise awareness for men’s health issues. ILSC activities coordinator John is participating in this event (& so is student “Murillo”). They shaved on the 1st of November and will remain unshaven until the end of the month! It will be interesting watching them transition from smoothly shaved to “wild man” over the course of the month! Again - as always this is your school and your magazine. If you have any ideas or something you’d like to share please feel email me at: Leon.BellPD@ilsc.com.au Have a super session 12! Leon Bell

Star Teacher
Joe Parker ILSC Teacher since 2014 What’s your name? Joe Parker How long have you been with ILSC? 3 years. What classes do you teach? I mainly teach the Cambridge First Closed class, but also dabble in IELTS and CAE. What do you do in your free time? I’m a fairly avid reader. I’m also really into music and getting to know Brisbane’s burgeoning craft breweries.
What’s something people might not know about you? Before becoming a teacher, I played bass professionally and toured extensively throughout the US and Europe. What’s next? Possibly back to uni in the new year to continue my studies in International Relations and Latin America Studies.
What are your most memorable moments from your time with ILSC? It’s hard to point an individual moment that’s most memorable, but doing Movember with Joel Dee and John Smedley my first year here is certainly high on the list. What gives you the most joy in teaching? Definitely the most rewarding part of teaching for me is having the opportunity to have a positive, meaningful impact on someone’s life. I still get a huge amount of motivation to teach when I have a student who’s hungry to learn. What is something on your “bucket list”? I really want to learn to speak Spanish properly. I studied it at uni and have spent loads of time in Latin America, but never managed to get anywhere close to fluent. Follow us:

Star Student
Mutsumi Moriwaki ILSC Student from 30/01/17 to 03/11/17 What made you decide to come to Brisbane, Australia? When I was high school student I stayed in Australia for 2 weeks on a school trip. During this time I couldn’t speak English at all to my host mother and I became depressed with my English. I regretted this for a long time. So I wanted to come to Australia again! Why did you decide to study with ILSC? I get bored easily when I study something. ILSC Brisbane has many class choices and activities. I can choose a new class every month. I have never been bored here! I also like the famous English only policy. It makes improve my English! What classes did you take beforehand? I used to learn English over Skype with foreign people. I was able to improve my speaking and listening this way before I came here. What do you do in your free time? I usually go to BBQs with my friends to make new friends. I also visited Melbourne, Sydney and
Noosa etc… I always enjoy doing something with my friends! How do you think ILSC helped you to get where you are now? I can’t think of Australian life without ILSC! ILSC has many activities for its students. So I could make a lot of friends here. There are many opportunities here! They are the treasures of my life. What are your most memorable moments from your time in Australia? It’s hard to choose only one but when I held a to sushi party in my house with my class mates was very memorable. It was the first time that I invited my new friends back to my house! These were my new friends from different nationalities! It was great experience for me! What was your biggest challenge in Australia? It was living with people from different countries. When I used to live with Japanese for 3 months I was only speaking in Japanese. I couldn’t stop speaking it. It wasn’t good for my English at all! Since Follow us:
then I have lived with Koreans and Peruvians for 6months. My English is improving every day! What are your passions / dreams – career, study or personal for the future? I would like to make own guest house in Japan. I have made a lot of new friends who come different countries. I want to intorduce Japan to them and I want to care for them like a mother! Then I want to learn to a third language. Maybe Spanish… How did your time in Australia change you? I don’t mind to speaking English to people I don’t know. I had a language barrier when I first came to Australia. At first I couldn’t speak English in a public place! But I learnt English in Australia. I got confidence with my English! What’s next? I’m going to work in Canada next summer on a working holiday. I want to feel the difference between Australia and Canada! But I’m worried about the cold for 4 years. I am sure I can do it though! ilsc_brisbane
