Hello

ILSC Brisbane students, teachers and staff! Welcome to Session 10. Spring is here! Finally. On Friday the 15th of September at 1:10pm in the L2 courtyard we will be drawing the winners for the “Learn to Earn” charity raffle. Remember the first prize is 2 skydiving tickets; second prize is 2 whale watching tickets and the third prize is a $100 drink voucher at the “Victory” bar. Tickets are only $2. If you are reading this before September the 15th at 10:30am you still have a chance to buy tickets! Talk to your teacher. If you are reading this after that date- sorry you missed out! Session 10 also has an opportunity to show your appreciation to your teachers here at ILSC Brisbane. Until Wednesday the 20th you will

have the chance to write a message to your most impressive teacher and submit it to the “Teacher Appreciation Box” next to the reception. This is a chance for you to say “Thanks” to a teacher who has really helped you with your studies here at ILSC Brisbane. Remember - you might not even “like” the teacher! The teacher could’ve made you work hard when you didn’t want to. We want you to show your appreciation to teachers who have helped you improve! Again - as always- this is your school and your magazine. If you have any ideas you’d like to have shared with the school please email me at: Leon.BellPD@ilsc.com.au. Have an epic session 9! Leon Bell

ILSC Teachers Day! Use the forms provided next to the reception to write a “Thankyou message to a teacher at ILSC who has made a difference in your life! After you write your message - put it in the box and we will give it to the teacher on Wednesday the 20th. This is your chance to let your teacher know how much you appreciate them!

Star Day Student

Khorolmaa Tserendorj ILSC Student from 12/09/2016 to 13/10/2017 What made you decide to come to Brisbane, Australia? I always wanted to study English abroad. I wanted to choose a safe and comfortable country. I was little bit confused which one to choose - Australia or the USA. Then my brother’s family recommended Australia to me. He has lived in Brisbane for 2 years. I really appreciate them because I like Brisbane very much - it is a clean and uncrowded city. I really enjoy living here. Why did you decide to study with ILSC? I researched many English language schools in Brisbane before I arrived. I became interested in ILSC because of location is in the city and good curriculum. That’s why I chose ILSC! What classes did you take beforehand? When I arrived in ILSC, I started in English Communication Level B2. At this time, my listening and speaking skills were not good. I couldn’t communicate with my classmates. Now I am studying Follow us:

ilsc_brisbane

in I1, and my English is becoming better. Now I have a lot of international friends as well. What do you do in your free time? I usually read books and sometimes I do yoga in my free time. Also I like to watch TED talks, this is improving my listening skills. Also I like to walk to the city and enjoy tasting international foods. How do you think ILSC helped you to get where you are now? ILSC teachers and my classmates have always helped me improve. ILSC teachers are very professional and they can teach very clearly and patiently. Also the curriculum is very suitable to me - it makes me work a lot! What are your memorable moments from your time in Australia? When I arrived in Brisbane I traveled to South Stradbroke Island. There I rode a jet ski. It was very amazing and exciting. I won’t forget my Australia life. I have had many amazing experiences here! ilsc-brisbane

What was your biggest challenge in Australia? I lived in Japan for 3 years before came in Australia. I already have experience living abroad alone. It was easy to find a way of living in Brisbane. But my English was not very good at the beginning. That’s why I am working hard in my studying and getting my teachers to help me with everything. What are your passions / dreams –career, study or personal for the future? My biggest dream is create a ‘Tour agency’ in Mongolia. I want to contribute to Mongolia’s tourism industry. I graduated ‘Tourism and Hotel Management’ in Mongolia. Now I really need to improve my English. If I learn English, I will be easier to achieve my dream. What’s next? I want to study Business English after General English. All after that I will return to my country. I will try hard to create my own ‘Tour agency’, also I will build a happy life for myself!

Annu Tamura ILSC Staff since 2008 How long have you been working for ILSC Brisbane? Since March 2008, well… nearly 10 years! Where are you now and what do you do? Tokyo – Japan (Been here for 2.5 years). I work on Marketing and counselling support for AUS Japanese counsellors. How do you do it? Travelling from city to city in Japan and visiting agencies to give updates. Also attending fairs and giving seminars for people who are considering studying with ILSC is also something I do. However counselling support is the fun part, there is only 1 hour time deference between AUS cities and Tokyo so I am always connected and communicating with counsellors in each city via skype. What do you do in your free time? Spending time with family (sorry… I am such an ordinary person!) What are your most memorable moments from your time with ILSC?

We made a movie for the BNE campus in 2014. We spent so much time planning the details in advance. The video shoot was supposed to be smooth but it had been raining for three days while the camera crew was in BNE! BNE should be sunny for 300 days out of 365 days but we were very unlucky and our plan got completely messed up. In the end, we managed to complete project but without a very patiently cooperative student volunteer team, it wouldn’t have been possible. Who is the most memorable coworker you have met at ILSC Brisbane? John Smedley. We went through so many things together… we were always arguing, crying, arguing, and getting older together. We also were the prototype for the BNE LCC team. What are your passions / dreams – career, study or personal for the future? Finding a balance between professional life and personal life and to be a role model for Japanese young women. In Japanese society, most women Follow us:

still have to choose between either having kids or seeking a career. Many of them give on working as a professional at some point- although governmental family support is so much better than AUS - I still think women can have families and work. Japanese women and companies are waiting for role models. Thanks to my company and family, I think I am doing OK so far so I’ll keep going! Has your time with Brisbane ILSC changed you? Of course! A lot! I learnt a lot from the team and students. I became a good listener and a more tolerant person through student counselling. Dealing with many things at the same time was painful at the beginning but ILSC BNE was such a small team so I naturally became a multitasking person. My creativity is definitely from Babette. Oh I almost forgot, my “ingrishu” (English) has improved a bit too! What’s next? I am going to take a course to be a certified career counsellor this year for marketing and student support. ilsc_brisbane

Joel Dee ILSC Teacher since 2013

What’s your name? Joel Dee. How long have you been with ILSC? Four and a half years. What classes do you teach? I teach I1 communication as a core class and IELTS 5.0 in the afternoon. What do you do in your free time? Creative writing, renovate our flat, listen to music, spend time with my wife and son. What are your most memorable moments from your time with ILSC? Too many to count but I guess the ILSC 25th birthday celebrations, in-depth conversations with colleagues during post-PD drinks, being shaved by students during Movember and Shave for a Cure, amusing questions students have sometimes asked. Follow us:

What gives you the most joy in teaching? When I see that light turn on in a student that has had trouble understanding and then suddenly gets it. Some of the stories I hear about students’ lives. Seeing students progress not only in their studies but also in their cultural awareness. What is something on your “bucket list”? To have written a few books. To be self-sustainable. To travel around Australia by train. To go on the Trans-Siberian and the Orient Express. What’s something people might not know about you? I used to play in a ska-band in Krakow as a saxophonist and occasional singer. What’s next? One of the things on my bucket list. We’ll see…. ilsc_brisbane
