Letter from the editor

Hello ILSC Brisbane students, teachers & staff! YES! It is Session 13 – the final session of a massive year!

What a year it has been. In this magazine you can find some of the highlights of 2017 in pictorial form on pages 18 and 19. On page 9 you’ll also find a special collection from our CSR and Volunteering activities in 2017. Activities such as these are a great opportunity for students to get involved in the local community and at the same time use their English. There WILL be a lot more of these opportunities next year! This calendar also sees contributions from the stratospheric levels of upper management at ILSC! Read and enjoy! Specifically note the “catalogue”

pose of a younger Michael Richards astride his Toyota land cruiser. In this session, as well as the usual plethora of excellent activities, ILSC Brisbane will be hosting three “specials”. We will have Write for Rights on Thursday the 7th of December (see page 8), a Find the Elf competition (see page 14) and a massive End of Year International Party (see page 14). We hope you enjoy reading this magazine and participating in the activities on offer in session 13. This is a short session (only 3 weeks) so let’s make it EPIC! Leon Leon.BellPD@ilsc.com.au

Q&A

with the owner

What’s your name? Babette Furstner.

What’s something about ILSC that makes you smile?

How long have you been with ILSC? 17 years (11 when the school was known by another name and 6 as ILSC).

What do you do away from ILSC?

What are your most memorable moments from your time with ILSC? Wow too many to list here. Collaborative management and family style culture is a big part of my happiness. I love how very different our team is and yet we all rub along well; it creates a naturally synergistic dynamic. I love our humanistic culture and that along with that we work very hard to be a strong and market smart business. I love the CSR events and initiatives, I am always blown away at the generosity and compassion I see demonstrated.

We attract very unique people. I like to get creative so I paint and write, I also volunteer as part of the Executive board for a notfor-profit organisation in the Sunshine Coast where I live. What is something on your “bucket list”? Travel on the Trans-Siberian from Hong Kong to Moscow. What’s something people might not know about you? I was asked to leave ballet classes when I was 8yrs old because I did too many unauthorised dance solos.

Robyn O’Loghlin ILSC Night ADOS What’s your name? Robyn O’Loghlin. My ancestors on my grandfather’s side were Irish, and so I have an Irish surname, but there are lots of spellings of my surname and mine is not very common. These ancestors came out to Australia in 1842, and my other ancestors, from England and Scotland, came out around the same time. How long have you been with ILSC? Not quite as long as my family has been in Australia, but a long time! When I started we had fewer than ten classes across all timetables, and we could all easily fit into the courtyard for school graduation days. What are your most memorable moments from your time with ILSC? Wow, there are so many! I have had dozens of amazing classes with incredible students. As well as this, some great memories include kayaking on the river with students, and having whole school parties in various locations. I still keep in touch with lots of students Follow us:

less healthy things like banana muffins, chocolate slice, lime pie and cheesecake! I also spend time reading, writing and swimming, and do a bit of advocating for refugee rights and other justice issues that I believe are important.

around the world and I’ve visited some of them in Colombia, Brazil, Korea and Taiwan. What’s something about ILSC that makes you smile? The great and sometimes crazy people that I work with, as well as the jokes and laughter we have in class sometimes. What do you do away from ILSC? Recently I’ve been entertaining a fair bit - inviting friends and family over to my home for meals - and so I’ve been doing quite a lot of cooking, and baking ilsc-brisbane

What is something on your “bucket list”? There are so many things in the world that I’d love to do, and I know that I will never do all of them. I’ve already been to lots of countries, but I would like to travel more – hopefully first of all to England to visit my sister there. However, my main goals in life in general are to live with gratitude and embrace the gift of the present moment, beoming more loving in the process.  What’s something people might not know about you? I enjoy poetry – writing it as well as reading it. I think poetry is a perfect vehicle to help us pause and reflect in on our daily lives, and to practice gratitude. Poetry takes a moment in time and suspends it, and enables us to breathe a little deeper. And we all need that sometimes.

Michael Richards ILSC Director What’s your name? A name is just a handle. If you break the handle you can still drink from the cup; so call me whatever you like. In any case our names evolve as we do, and one name can’t say it all. In my early years at school I was called “Spot” because I was so small. My sister called me “String Bean” because I was so skinny, but I can’t tell you what I called her. Then I became “Mick” to my friends (although I was always Michael to my Mum) and then “Mad Mick” and sometimes “Tricky Dick”. My first girlfriend called me “Mickey” and now my wife calls me “You old XXXX”. My daughter calls me “Dad” but I’m “Doctor Richards”. At ILSC some people call me “Boss” or “Big Boss” but I’m really just a little boss. How long have you been with ILSC? I started at this school in 2005 so that makes 12 years. That’s by far the longest time I’ve worked in one place, and that’s because it’s the best place I’ve ever worked. What are your most memorable moments from your time with

Spend time with friends. Read books. Watch movies. Swim. Gym. Drink wine. Travel now and then. Try not to cut grass, or sweep or clean, or get eaten by a crocodile or bitten by a snake.

ILSC? The smiles on student faces and the sparkle in their eyes. What’s something about ILSC that makes you smile? Smiling is contagious; so the most important thing is other people’s smiles. I see a lot of smiles at ILSC. I think I’m tremendously lucky to work with so many really great people. What do you do away from ILSC? Follow us:

What is something on your “bucket list”? Everything. Nothing. I don’t have a bucket list. I try to live in the moment. Mostly I want to be a better person. This is where I can quote my favourite platitudes: Be where you are. The journey is more important than the destination. Every long journey starts with one small step. The thing is, all of these are true. What’s something people might not know about you? You can’t fool me. That’s a trick question because if I tell you, everyone will know. I used to jump out of aeroplanes and was part of record holding team. Sometimes we would fly into the country and jump out without knowing where we were. I’ve landed in a cemetery, in a river, in a tree and on a barbed wire fence. Then we had to find our own way back. I never broke a bone. ilsc_brisbane

On Thursday the 7th of December ILSC Brisbane will participate in a Global ILSC initiative to participate in the 2017 Amnesty International “Write for Rights” (W4R) day. Students will be able to send letters of support directly to a cause as vetted by Amnesty International. The letter writing will be an opportunity for ILSC students to participate directly in a good cause and use their English abilities “for real”. Everybody is welcome! All levels of English are OK!

We have three people / groups that we will be writing to:

The MILPAH Indigenous Movement People fighting to preserve their home against big businesses in Honduras

Clovis Razafimalala

Mahadine

Shona McIntyre ILSC ADOS

How long have you been working with ILSC Brisbane? I started as a teacher here in March of 2012 and became ADOS in June of 2014. So nearly 5 years in total. What are your hours? I work 8 til 4, although I often stay a bit later if I’m needed. I’m here to help T1 and T2 schedules. What do you do? I work with the counsellors to help the students with any academic problems. I work with the teachers to help them and I work with Admin when they need academic support. I am also the Academic coordinator for the Pathway Program, helping students reach the level they need to study at other schools after ILSC. What do you do in your free time? I love going to movies with my teenaged daughter, I’m also studying and I’m a big fan of relaxing on my balcony. I’m also trying to get into running but I’m a bit lazy on weekends.

What are your most memorable moments from your time with ILSC? So many wonderful afternoons in the teachers’ room talking about classes and so many great experiences with students in classes that I’ve taught. I loved teaching pronunciation to B1-B2 classes. Who is the most memorable coworker (other than Michelle) you have met at ILSC Brisbane? There is no-one like Michelle. She’s an amazing person with a great sense of humour and brilliant at her job. What has been the most memorable student centred event that you have experienced here at ILSC Brisbane? A couple of years ago, my daughter and I joined the Earth Hour event at Kangaroo Point. Our students are so warm and welcoming, even to a young teen. Playing hopscotch and trying new foods from other countries…a great experience.

What are your passions / dreams – career, study or personal for the future? At the moment, I’m studying an MBA at university because there are so many things to learn for work and because I love learning. Right now I’m mostly focused on getting my daughter through high school so I’m right where I need to be. Has your time at Brisbane ILSC changed you? My time here has made a huge difference to my life and to me. When I came back from Spain 6 years ago, ILSC gave me a great ‘home’ to get back on my feet. I’ve grown in confidence and skills, which means I can be a good role model to my daughter. It’s a great place to work. What’s next? The sky is the limit, right? I’m going to enjoy life in Brisbane and enjoy helping people learn and grow.

End of Year Party!

From 6:30PM in the L1 courtyard. All students (T1/T2 & T3) welcome. Bring some food from your home country and share. (You can organize something with your friends) Eating, singing and dancing! (Just no drinking!)

Happy times!

Star Student

Solongo Urtnasan ILSC Student from 11/9/2017 to 21/112018

What made you decide to come to Brisbane, Australia? English is the most important communication language on the international stage. I have been studying English in my country since I was young. I felt it was not enough to just “learn English”. I thought that if I go overseas to a country where English is the native I could learn even better. My boss who is an Australian suggested Australia to me. So I am here! Why did you decide to study with ILSC? I have a friend who graduated from ILSC. She suggested the school to me and as I could see her English getting better every time we met- I decided to study with ILSC Brisbane. What the main class you are you taking? I am studying English Communication at I2 now with Bob who is an evening teacher. He is great! What do you do in your free time?

I used to spend my free time with my family in my country. Now in Australia if I have a free time I prefer to watch a movie or listen to music in English. My English is improving every day. I love being a part of ILSC! What are your most memorable moments from your time in Australia? There were lot of memorable moments from my time here. My friend and I watched beautiful fireworks at the Brisbane festival earlier this year. This event was extremely thrilling! I had never seen fireworks which lasted for 30 minutes before.
