Letter from the editor
Greetings ILSC Brisbane students, teachers
and staff. Session 11 is upon us and summer is well and truly on its way!
First we must say a big “Thank you” to all of the students, staff and teachers who supported our “Learn to Earn” charity raffle last session. Thanks to your efforts ILSC Brisbane raised over $670.00 for our trainee teachers in India. Second - another big “Thank you” to ‘Lulu’ and her supporters for organising and running the two charity events for the victims of the Mexican Earthquake. Despite the ‘excitement’ on the day everyone managed to overcome and ILSC Brisbane ultimately raised over $280.00 for the Mexican Red Cross. Well done everyone! Session 11 sees the usual plethora of excellent activities for students to participate in (please see the centre section of this magazine). Remember the more things you get involved with the more chances you will have to use (& improve) your English! In this edition of the community calendar you’ll note that we have profiled two ILSC alumni (Ale and Shizzy). We decided to include both of these former students in the same edition as they are both such outstanding examples of success! Read their story and you’ll see what it takes to succeed (both in English and life). One last word - On Tuesday the 31st of October is Halloween. Some of your teachers (& some of the staff!) will be dressing in costume. If you want to dress up (& why not?) please feel free! Again - as always this is your school and your magazine. If you have any ideas or something you’d like to share please feel email me at: Leon.BellPD@ilsc.com.au Have an epic session 11! Leon Bell

Star Student
Saori Aoyama
ILSC Student from 05/12/2016 to 06/10/2017 What made you decide to come to Brisbane, Australia? I wanted to live in a city which is (relatively) safe, not too expensive, not too “touristy”, not too hot nor cold. In my eyes, Brisbane is an ideal city. Why did you decide to study with ILSC? When I went to my agency, I explained how seriously I wanted to study English. As a result, they recommended ILSC because it has great environment and awesome teachers!! What classes did you take beforehand? I had studied at English school for five years in Japan. It somehow helped me improve my English, but it wasn’t enough. That’s why I decided to come to Australia. What do you do in your free time? It’s quite normal, but I like cooking, taking a walk, hanging out with my friends and travelling. Nowadays I cook Brazilian food, which I wouldn’t have tried if I hadn’t come to Australia. How do you think ILSC helped
you to get where you are now? It is really interesting to study in a melting pot. My perception of the world has been changing every single day. What are your most memorable moments from your time in Australia? One is a trip to the Sunshine Coast with my classmates in the month I started ILSC. It was my first time travelling with friends from other countries as well as my first trip in Australia. At first, I was anxious whether I would enjoy it or not as my English wasn’t so good. Needless to say, I had a whale of a time there!
and the doctors said she was fine so I decided to come back here, but it is still really hard for me. What are your passions / dreams – career, study or personal for the future? To be honest, I don’t know. I have so many things which I want to achieve in my life. I can’t narrow them down yet. Some are: to get a job which requires using English or to live in countries where people speak English or to support tourists from other countries to visit Japan.
The other one is when I passed the Cambridge FCE test. I wasn’t so sure I could do it because I hadn’t passed in practical test even once beforehand. I was so happy to tell everyone who had supported me when I passed it. I’ll never forget these moments.
How did your time in Australia change you? I’d say, now I can be who I truly am. I owe what I am to the experience in Australia. When I was in Japan, I needed to be who people thought I should be. Also, learning English as well. In light of this, I have a tremendous amount of opportunities for a brilliant future!
What was your biggest challenge in Australia? Living away from my parents. After I came to Australia, it turned out my mum had a serious disease, so I went back to Japan in April. She
What’s next? Keep going. Keep studying. I don’t want my English to get rusty. Although I’m going back to my country soon, I will be who I want to be. I’m proud of myself.

ILSC Alumni
Alejandra Guillen ILSC Student from August 2016 to July 2017
What made you decide to come to Brisbane, Australia? It was the furthest place from my country, the weather is perfect and the city is quite big and safe. Why did you decide to study with ILSC? Because is the best school to learn English and I loved the only English policy. What classes did you take beforehand? I studied there for ONE YEAR!! I took almost all the classes but my favourites ones were Business, Cambridge and EAP. What do you do in your free time? I enjoy running, hanging out with friends, helping my grandma making home-made chocolate (the real thing-you can ask John about it.. ) and keeping in touch with my friends. How do you think ILSC helped you to get where you are now? Teaching me English and the necessary skills to use it.
What are your most memorable moments from your time in Australia? I have one year of memories so I cannot choose a specific memory but I enjoyed travelling around Australia (Melbourne, Cains, Sydney, All the coast , etc.) and New Zealand. I experienced new cultures and all of the ILSC activities (museum; happy hour; Craft beer; cafe work skill; Cinema with Mig etc.) But I will say the most memorable was meeting my friends. What was your biggest challenge in Australia? Being self-confident about my English and the Cambridge exam. The exam was so hard but was totally worth it! What are your passions / dreams – career, study or personal for the future? My future… this is a good question because nothing is for sure! I can say I will be working as hard as always, I want to study a Master’s degree in another country maybe Follow us:
England, Ireland. The world is a mystery! I wish with my heart that next year I can visit one of my friends from ILSC in their country. How did your time in Australia change you? Australia and ILSC gave me the last push in my personal growth, I was self-sufficient before it but I was not able to make friends from other countries because of the language barrier. At ILSC I learned about being alone but at the same time got a family of people from different countries! I have a hunger for travel around the world and visiting my friends. I’m not the same person who left Mexico one year ago in a good way What’s next? AMAZON!!! I got my dream job in one of the biggest companies in the world! My experience in Australia was the difference between other candidates because of my English skill, my personal grow and my open mind about other cultures and were big factors in me getting th the job! ilsc_brisbane

Shizuha Takeda ILSC Student from 24/3/2014 until 30/1/2015 What made you decide to come to Brisbane, Australia? Brisbane is not too small a city but not too big. So I thought Brisbane would be a good place to focus on study. Why did you decide to study with ILSC? ILSC has strict English “English Only” policy, so I thought ILSC would be the best place to me! What classes did you take beforehand? I studied European culture at University. I studied German and German culture for 3 years! What do you do in your free time? I’m keen on visiting Art museums. I visited many museums while I was in Australia. What are your most memorable moments from your time in Australia? My most unforgettable time in Australia was the “Colour Run”. I took part in it as a volunteer. This was my first time in Australia! At first I was a little nervous because I wasn’t sure whether people could understand my English or not but they were very nice. Most of them said “Thank you “to us and I discovered that Brisbane is really a lovely place!
What was your biggest challenge in Australia? My biggest challenge was Business English. I had never studied it before and it was really tough for me! What are your passions / dreams – career, study or personal for the future? I’d like to study business especially, human resources at TAFE or University in the future. Since I took Business English at ILSC, I’ve been interested in business. How did your time in Australia change you? ILSC helped me get the courage to try things that have always interested me. My outlook on life also expanded. Before I came to Australia, I didn’t have any confidence. However, thanks to cheerful teachers and staff, I changed a lot! Now, if I want to try something I say to myself “Just have a go!” I am much more active now. What’s next? I made up my mind to change my career path. So, I’m going to volunteer in Rwanda for 2 years. I’m extremely excited about it!
