Hello ILSC Brisbane and welcome to Session 9! First a big “Thank you” to all of the students (present and past) who contributed to the ILSC Global Instagram competition. ILSC Brisbane students once again proved how fantastic they are by posting three times as many (as any other ILSC school) images and videos during the month of the competition. Well done! You all did Brisbane so proud. Speaking of being proud. We at ILSC Brisbane are so proud of our alumni - Asuka (in kimono, above) who graduated from TAFE QLD with a Diploma of Interior Design on the 9th of August. Asuka started at ILSC Brisbane with a B2 level in 2014. After a lot of hard work Asuka improved her English to be eligible to study with TAFE. After more hard work at TAFE Asuka graduated! Of 90 students who started the course Asuka was one of 18 to graduate. Well done!
Session 9 starts with a holiday! Remember that in week 1 – Wednesday the 16th is the “Ekka” holiday. I recommend that you take advantage of being in Brisbane during this time to spend a day at the Ekka (Google and YouTube it - it is an awesome event!). If you are going to stay there for the fireworks please make sure to take warm clothes. As usual we have many activities during the session that you can join. Please remember that these activities are for you! They help you get out into the community, make friends and use your English. Again - as always - remember that this is your magazine. If you have any ideas you’d like to be shared with the school through this magazine please email me at: Leon.BellPD@ilsc.com.au Have an epic session 9! Leon Bell

Star Day Student
Akane Miyata
ILSC Student from 27/02/2017 to 03/11/2017 I came to study in Brisbane because I wanted to learn English and l thought that Brisbane would be the most comfortable city to live and study. I chose to study at ILSC Brisbane specifically because I feel that my weakest point is communication. At ILSC Brisbane I can practice my English all day every day with all of the other international students here! In my free time I love to do “Hot Yoga” and spend time with my friends (all from different countries now!) on the weekend. I am really grateful to ILSC Brisbane
for having its strict “English Only” policy. It can be very difficult sometimes but it has really helped me make my international friends who I spend the weekends with! While I am here in Brisbane I want to learn about how Australia markets its beauty industry. With that in mind I am planning to complete an internship at a local cosmetics company. This will be a big challenge for me but I am ready to work hard towards my dream. I want to use my Australian experience when I go back to
Japan to get into the cosmetics industry there. The most memorable thing that has happened to me here so far is my surprise birthday party. My classmates prepared a cake with candles for me and bought it into my class. All the other students and my teacher Robert sang “Happy Birthday” for me! Australia has changed me as I have learnt so much. I have learnt far more than just English! I have learnt about other cultures too! My time here has really expanded my horizons!
We’re excited to share that ILSC Education Group was shortlisted for 3 Study Travel Star Awards this year! Our ILSC Language Schools were shortlisted for the Star Chain School award, and both our Greystone College, and ILSC Business College in Australia were nominated for the Star Vocational College award. We’ll find out the results at Study Travel’s gala awards dinner on September 2. Thank you to our education partners for your votes and constant support!
Star Teacher
Shandell Boyd ILSC Teacher since 2015 My most memorable moment was at the staff 2016 Christmas party because I received a card with beautiful comments my students had written. What gives you the most joy in teaching? I feel the most joy when the students understand a difficult grammar point. That and when I teach them new, everyday vocabulary that they may not learn in text books. What is something on your “bucket list”? I want to travel to Taiwan, Brazil and Colombia in the future.
What’s your name? Shandell Boyd. How long have you been with ILSC? I’ve been here for two years. What classes do you teach? I teach B2 communication.
What do you do in your free time? I like to go to concerts, drink tea, do embroidery and scrapbook. I also enjoy going op-shopping to ad to my collection of accessories.
What’s something people might not know about you? People may not know that I have a super healthy diet. I don’t eat dairy, gluten or sugar and I don’t eat much meat. So that means no ice-cream for me! If I eat chocolate, it has to be very dark chocolate.
What are your most memorable moments from your time with ILSC?
What’s next? I am open to many different possibilities.

Star Afternoon Student
Cristiane Capeletti ILSC Student from 24/04/2017 to 08/09/2017
What made you decide to come to Brisbane, Australia? I’ve chosen Brisbane because I love sunny days! Also this city is medium-sized and it’s not crowded, with many opportunities. I’ve always heard many positive things!
What do you do in your free time? In my free time I sometimes meet my friends and we see new places, go to parties and go to the beach! But in my house, I really like surfing the internet and watching games of rugby.
What did you decide to study with ILSC? I decided to study with ILSC for many reasons: the good local community, excellent facilities and because of the many recommendations for ILSC I got from my friends!
How do you think ILSC helped you get where you are now? ILSC is helping me improve my English with various activities outside of my normal class.
What classes did you take beforehand? When I arrived in Brissie (Brisbane), three months ago I started in English Communication, Level B2. I had a lot of difficulty in the first week, but I’ve had excellent teachers. They have helped me a lot. Now I’m in B4 really excited to improve every day!
What are your most memorable moments from your time in Australia? I stayed in Sydney for four days before I came to Brissie. I met my Brazilian friends there and I saw the Opera House, Bondi beach and enjoyed the new culture. In the first week when I arrived in Brissie, it was “Anzac Day” and on that day, I saw and felt that a lot of Australian people are patriots. What was your biggest challenge in Australia?
My biggest challenge was “beginning again”, meeting new people, making friends…but mainly looking for a job in an area different from my usual profession! What was your passions/ dreams - career, study or personal for the future? I’m passionate about CROSSFIT (functional training, constantly varied and high intensity), Rugby and going to the beach! I’m a Crossfit Coach Level 1. My dream is to get a job in my profession here in Australia. How did your time in Australia change you? My life is amazing! Aussie culture has influenced a lot of my thoughts about life! Mainly “Learn from yesterday - Live for today – Hope for tomorrow!” I’d like to see all people with a positive mind, good lifestyle, eating better, doing more exercise and being happier! I believe in a better world!
THE COLOR RUN
Star Night Student
Natalia Cardona Sanchez ILSC Student from 03/04/2017 to 15/09/2017 What made you decide to come to Brisbane, Australia? It’s a very nice story- I’ve always wanted to study abroad, but it’s hard for me not to have my family nearby! One day at my University there was a sign promoting “Study abroad” I thought that this could be a good opportunity. I took a day to decide where I should go and the girl who was advising me suggested Brisbane- “A wonderful city with great weather and nice people”. I must say that she was not wrong! Why did you decide to study with ILSC? Although there are many language schools in Brisbane I liked ILSC’s location, the rules within the institution, its methodology and the welcome it gives to its foreign students. I also saw photos online that showed me it was a good place to study! ILSC has a wide variety of courses and programs, as well as fantastic activities. What do you do in your free time? In my spare time, I like to read and dance and I always enjoy learning
new things. I also like to spend quality time with my family and to take photographs. What are your most memorable moments from your time in Australia? I will never forget the first day I arrive at school, the mixture of feelings, nerves, joy, happiness, anxiety - everything! It is something that I can’t explain. I am a very sensitive person and I get excited easily. In Australia I also had the opportunity to go skydiving. It was a unique moment, wonderful! What was your biggest challenge in Australia? My life in Colombia was quiet and comfortable. Arriving in Australia opened my eyes! It made me appreciate all the small things. I realized that it is not the dreamers who have the best adventures. Living in another country is being imbalanced all the time, nothing is yours except for the essentials of life: air, rest, dreams, the sky and the sun.
What are your passions / dreams – career, study or personal for the future? I want to go back to Colombia and get a Master’s degree in management, continue improving my English and take more classes and get a good job in a great company. On a personal level I want to travel the world, to fill myself with knowledge and enjoy every second of this wonderful life! How did your time in Australia change you? I am even more positive after my experience in Australia! I feel that I am a renewed person, I feel happier I am enjoying every second. It has made me a freer person and more aware of what is truly important. “Our experiences are a part of us greater than our material goods.” Gilovich said. What’s next? Next I’ll return to Colombia, find a new job, and work hard for 7 or 8 months. I am deeply grateful to the school I really love it, I am very happy to be part of this institution.
